Hearing Health In Utah Special Olympics Athletes Compared To Special Olympics Athletes Worldwide: A Prevalence Study In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities, Lisa Moses Mullins

Theses and Dissertations

The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative promotes wellness of the athletes with intellectual disabilities and education for medical professionals. Healthy Athletes has created a hearing screening program, Healthy Hearing, to help athletes with intellectual disabilities get the otological and audiological care they need. This program promotes a healthy hearing lifestyle and educates medical professionals regarding the need of health care for the intellectually disabled population. The physiologic, otologic, and audiologic abnormalities often occurring in the intellectually disabled population bring special attention for the need to determine the prevalence rate of hearing loss among the athletes participating in Special Olympics events. …

Natural-Law Judaism?: The Genesis Of Bioethics In Hans Jonas, Leo Strauss And Leon Kass, Lawrence A. Vogel May 2006

Natural-Law Judaism?: The Genesis Of Bioethics In Hans Jonas, Leo Strauss And Leon Kass, Lawrence A. Vogel

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Leon Kass is much misunderstood. He is not simply a Republican ideologue who tailored his ideas to break out of the ivory tower and into the halls of power. Nor does he look simply to use human nature as a moral guide. When the full range of his writings is considered and set in the tradition of his teachers, Hans Jonas and Leo Strauss, what emerges is a natural law position colored by religious revelation.

Factors Influencing Louisiana Consumers' Awareness Of Diet And Health Related Issues, Marcus A. Coleman May 2006

Factors Influencing Louisiana Consumers' Awareness Of Diet And Health Related Issues, Marcus A. Coleman

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

The accumulation of too much fat in the body is the leading cause of being overweight and obese, and it can lead to more complicated health problems. Studies show that individuals who are overweight or obese bear a greater risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some forms of cancer. Louisiana ranks fourth in the number of its citizens who are either overweight or obese. Additionally, the state spends almost $11 billion annually treating diet-related health problems. The study's objectives are as follows: (1) to assess the extent to which food label use, awareness of health …

Diabetes Prevention Education For Mexican American Women With Gestational Diabetes: Pilot Testing A Videotape, Carol Anne Easton May 2006

Diabetes Prevention Education For Mexican American Women With Gestational Diabetes: Pilot Testing A Videotape, Carol Anne Easton

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a culturally sensitive educational videotape on the knowledge of prevention of Type 2 diabetes after pregnancy, in pregnant gestational diabetic (GDM) women over 18 years old, who attended the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at a university health center in a large southwestern city. Mexican American GDM women have a high risk for Type 2 diabetes, 80% in 5 years if their diabetes status is reclassified pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance during their early postpartum exam (Kjos. 1995). But the return-to-clinic rate for the women who attend this clinic is …

A Comparison Of The Imapct Of Environmental Stressors On Blood Parameters Of Captive Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina), Maura Allard May 2006

A Comparison Of The Imapct Of Environmental Stressors On Blood Parameters Of Captive Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina), Maura Allard

Senior Honors Projects

Little research has been established in determining blood chemistry values for harbor seals in Alaska. It has been suggested that various environmental factors can influence the blood chemistry values due to temperature, day length, precipitation, constraint and diet amongst other variables. Currently there are no guidelines for veterinarians and rehabilitators to refer to when analyzing blood chemistry values for sick animals. The hope for this research is that it will aide in establishing guidelines for specific circumstances due to environmental stressors. It is hoped that in the future, this study will be used to create values for which veterinarians can …

From Chalk Boards To Smart Boards: Technology In The Classroom, Megan E. O'Malley

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Researchers support the use of technology in the classroom as a way to enhance the learning environment and student achievement. Successful technological integration depends on appropriate teacher training. There are numerous ways to successfully integrate technology into the classroom such as educational technology, business partnerships, and technological tools. Teachers have the ability to introduce students to varying types of technology at an early age, better preparing students for their educational career. Educating administrators and teachers alike is the first step in creating successful classrooms. This first purpose of this project was to explore the effects that technology use had on …

Performance Of Pre And Post-Partum Weather Stressed Cows Supplemented With Yeast Culture, Fabian Ortiz May 2006

Performance Of Pre And Post-Partum Weather Stressed Cows Supplemented With Yeast Culture, Fabian Ortiz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Livestock have been fed yeast as a feed supplement for more than 100 years Stone, C. 00). Yeast is a microscopic, single cell fungi of the plant kingdom. Of the 50,000 species of fungi, only 60 different genera of yeast representing about 500 different species exist. A few of these are used commercially in the animal feed industry as active dry yeast or yeast culture (Kreger, van Rij, 1984). Yeast culture consists of live yeast cells, plus the medium on which yeast is grown. Yeast products are commonly fed as pro-biotics, but little is known about their effects. Some studies …

Fat Teen Trouble: A Sociological Perspective Of Obesity In Adolescents, Katherine Malnor May 2006

Fat Teen Trouble: A Sociological Perspective Of Obesity In Adolescents, Katherine Malnor

Sociology Honors Projects

While many studies have sought to isolate some of the causes and possible solutions to the growing problem of childhood obesity in the United States, researchers have given scant attention to the influence of social factors on obesity. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, this study examines if social factors can explain adolescent obesity. Models predicting obesity as measured by body-mass-index found that different factors were associated with obesity for males and females, but had poor overall predictive power. Separate analysis of parents’ subjective assessment of adolescent obesity found different influences and no association with objective …

Exploring The Role Of Sac9 In Arabidopsis Thaliana Stress Response And Phosphoinositide Signaling, Elizabeth J. Drake May 2006

Exploring The Role Of Sac9 In Arabidopsis Thaliana Stress Response And Phosphoinositide Signaling, Elizabeth J. Drake

Biology

The SAC9 gene in Arabidopsis thaliana encodes a protein, Sac9, which is a putative 5-phosphatase involved in phosphoinositide stress signaling pathways in plants. The SAC domain of Sac9 has sequence homology with yeast and mammalian phosphoinositide phosphatases that catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PtdIns(4,5)P2]. The loss of the Sac9 protein in A. thaliana leads to an increase in the quantity of PtdIns(4,5)P2 in the plant. This increase in PtdIns(4,5)P2 in the sac9-1 mutant A. thaliana likely causes plants grown under non-stress conditions to exhibit several phenotypes normally associated with stress. The focus of this thesis …

Genetic And Phenotypic Variability Of Metarhizium Anisoplae For Virulence And Tolerance To Uv-B Radiation And Heat, Drauzio E. N. Rangel May 2006

Genetic And Phenotypic Variability Of Metarhizium Anisoplae For Virulence And Tolerance To Uv-B Radiation And Heat, Drauzio E. N. Rangel

Biology

The fungus Metarhizium anisopliae is an important agent for biological control of insects and has great advantages over chemical insecticides. However, ultraviolet radiation and heat from sunlight are serious obstacles for the use of M. anisopliae in agriculture, where the conidia may be impaired in a matter of a few hours in the field. Therefore, isolate selection and/or generation of conidia with increased tolerance to UV radiation and heat are a major goal of this dissertation. High variability in heat and UV-B tolerance was found among 17 isolates of M. anisopliae from different geographic origins, but there was very low …
