Undeserved Trust: Reflections On The Ali's Treatment Of De Facto Parents, Robin Fretwell Wilson
Undeserved Trust: Reflections On The Ali's Treatment Of De Facto Parents, Robin Fretwell Wilson
Faculty Scholarship
In its PRINCIPLES OF THE LAW OF FAMILY DISSOLUTION, the American Law Institute (ALI) proposes sweeping changes in the legal conception of parenthood. One such change would confer custody and visitation rights on a live-in partner of a legal parent who shared caretaking responsibility for a child for two or more years. This proposal to give “parental rights” to “de facto parents” necessarily limits the prerogative of legal parents to decide who comes into contact with their child. Under the ALI’s proposed “approximation” standard, moreover, de facto parents are presumptively entitled to a share of custody that “approximates” the de …
Conservation Of Waste Rice And Estimates Of Moist-Soil Seed Abundance For Wintering Waterfowl In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Jennifer Kross
Conservation Of Waste Rice And Estimates Of Moist-Soil Seed Abundance For Wintering Waterfowl In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Jennifer Kross
Theses and Dissertations
Waste rice in harvested fields and natural seeds in moist-soil wetlands are important foods for waterfowl in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV). Waste rice declines significantly between harvest and late autumn. I conducted experiments in 19 rice fields in Arkansas and Mississippi during autumns 2003 and 2004 to evaluate the ability of common post-harvest practices to conserve waste rice between harvest and late autumn. Greatest mean abundance of waste rice in late autumn occurred in standing stubble (x&95 = 105 kg/ha; CL = 72.84, 150.16 kg/ha) followed by burned (x&95 = 72 kg/ha; 49.57, 105.81 kg/ha), mowed (x&95 = 67 …

An Investigation Of Violence-Related Trauma At Two Sites In The Pickwick Basin: Dust Cave (1lu496) And The O'Neal Site (1lu61), James Harvey Turner Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Osteological evidence for violence has only in recent times been thoroughly investigated. Several kinds of traumas indicative of violence have been identified in human skeletal remains worldwide. Such traumas include scalping, embedded and/or associated projectile points, cranial fractures, parry fractures and defensive injuries, decapitation and dismemberment, and evidence of cannibalism. Analysis of traumas at Dust Cave (1LU496) and the O?Neal site (1LU61), two sites in northwestern Alabama with Middle and Late Archaic occupations, was undertaken. Violence-related traumas were observed at both sites. A highly significant difference exists in trauma patterns between the sites. Results were compared to research done on …

Survival, Habitat Use, And Nest-Site Characteristics Of Wild Turkeys In Central Mississippi, Brad Douglas Holder
Theses and Dissertations
Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) survival, habitat use, and nest-site characteristics were studied on Malmaison Wildlife Management Area, Mississippi, 2003-2004. Survival rates were 0.55, 0.0004, 0.26, and 0.30 for jakes, adult gobblers, juvenile hens, and adult hens, respectively for the entire study. Spring survival for all groups was 0.51 (95% CI 0.36, 0.65) and was least among seasons. Predation (65%) and harvest (21%) were major causes of mortality. Brood hens used bottomland hardwood stands, pine plantations, and old fields more than expected during the post-nesting period. Non-brood hens used bottomland hardwood stands more than expected during the pre- and post-nesting periods. …
Identification, Characterization And Anti-Fungal Activities Of Silk Proteins In Aspergillus Flavus Resistant And Susceptible Maize Inbreds, Bela Peethambaran
Identification, Characterization And Anti-Fungal Activities Of Silk Proteins In Aspergillus Flavus Resistant And Susceptible Maize Inbreds, Bela Peethambaran
Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to understand the mechanism of maize inbreds resistance to A. flavus by exploring the proteins that are differentially regulated in presence of pathogen. Silk has been hypothesized as one of the entry routes of fungal growth and so the proteome of silks was investigated by 1) performing a comparative proteomic study to identify silk proteins that are abundant in resistant maize inbreds and down-regulated or absent in susceptible inbreds, 2) identifying the up-regulated proteins in maize resistant and susceptible inbreds when challenged by A. flavus 3) by mapping the proteome of silk proteins in a A. flavus …
Evaluation Of The Antimicrobial Activity Of A Bifidobacteria Mix Against Escherichia Coli 0157:H7 Under Aerobic Conditions, Chenbo Wang
Theses and Dissertations
A bifidobacteria mix (nine strains) was evaluated for its effect on the growth and survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (ATCC 43890) in 11% NFDM and MRS broth under the optimum growth conditions for E. coli O157:H7 growth (37¡ãC, aerobic). Preliminary experiments were conducted to obtain the growth curves of the 9 strains of bifidobacteria and E. coli O157:H7 and confirm the inhibitory effect of acidity on E. coli O157:H7 (pH of media adjusted to 3.8). Acidapted E. coli O157:H7 showed no difference in resistance toward bifidobacteria (P>0.05) when compared to the non-acid adapted one. Escherichia coli O157:H7 did not …

Multiple Imputation In The Presence Of Outliers, Michael Elliott
Multiple Imputation In The Presence Of Outliers, Michael Elliott
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We consider the problem of obtaining population-based inference in the presence of missing data and outliers in the context of estimating obesity prevalence and body-mass index (BMI) measures from the Healthy For Life Study. Identifying multiple outliers in a multivariate setting is problematic because of problems such as masking, in which groups of outliers inflate the covariance matrix in a fashion that prevents their identification when included, and swamping, in which outliers skew covariances in a fashion that make non-outling observations appear to be outliers. We develop a latent class model that assumes each observation belongs to one of $K$ …

Niche To Mainstream In Sustainable Urban Food Systems: The Case Of Food Distribution In Portland, Oregon, Bowen Close
Niche To Mainstream In Sustainable Urban Food Systems: The Case Of Food Distribution In Portland, Oregon, Bowen Close
Pomona Senior Theses
To address the negative environmental, political, and social consequences of the dominant, industrialized global food system, communities around the world have developed goals and values underlying a sustainable food system. Conceptualizing food production, distribution, and consumption as systems helps clarify the ways food affects social and natural environments, with the distribution element as the critical juncture where the product reaches the consumer. Urban food systems are a particularly important environment in which to study movements toward sustainability. This paper focuses on the movement for a sustainable food system in Portland, Oregon, with particular focus on the city’s markets for …

The Effects Of Learning Goals On Self-Concept And Intrinsic Motivation In The Learning Disabled Student: A Case Study, Lindsay S. Reed
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to increase levels of self-concept and intrinsic motivation in a 9th grade student with a specific learning disability in mathematics through the use of weekly learning goals and the introduction of problem-solving strategies. Over the course of the six week study, the student experienced a significant rise in overall self-concept and intrinsic motivation as indicated by the results of two, One-Way ANOVA's from two self-report scales completed by the student. Implications for generalization of this study's results should include sample size, degree of learning disability, and administration of intervention techniques.

Usage Of Plant Examples In Secondary School Biology Classes, Tamara L. Egner
Usage Of Plant Examples In Secondary School Biology Classes, Tamara L. Egner
Theses and Dissertations
Botanists have expressed concern over the dwindling recognition and emphasis of plants that currently exists in the fields of education and research. To ascertain if these claims pertain to high schools in the State of New Jersey, a survey on the frequency of using plant examples for teaching 10 biological principles was randomly distributed to secondary school biology teachers. Results from 80 respondents showed that on average, plants are used as examples in teaching 66% of these biological principles. The primary rationale cited by teachers for low or non-usage of plants was that they preferred animals as teaching examples. Underlying …

Effects Of A Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet On Emerging Plasma Markers For Cardiovascular Disease, Richard J Wood, Jeff S Volek, Steven R Davis, Carly Dell'ova, Maria Luz Fernandez
Nutrition Articles
BACKGROUND : Increasing evidence supports carbohydrate restricted diets (CRD) for weight loss and improvement in traditional markers for cardiovascular disease (CVD); less is known regarding emerging CVD risk factors. We previously reported that a weight loss intervention based on a CRD (% carbohydrate:fat:protein = 13:60:27) led to a mean weight loss of 7.5 kg and a 20% reduction of abdominal fat in 29 overweight men. This group showed reduction in plasma LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides and elevations in HDL-cholesterol as well as reductions in large and medium VLDL particles and increases in LDL particle size. In this study we report on …
