Polymorphism And Growth Behavior Of Low-Trans Fatty Acids Blends Formulated With And Without Emulsifiers, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Roberto J. Candal, Maria L. Herrera Jun 2006

Polymorphism And Growth Behavior Of Low-Trans Fatty Acids Blends Formulated With And Without Emulsifiers, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Roberto J. Candal, Maria L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Polymorphism and growth behavior of blends of a high-melting fraction of milk fat (HMF) and sunflower oil (SFO) formulated with and without the addition of sucrose esters (SE) P-170, P-1670, and S-170 were studied by pulsed 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy. The effect of SE on the solid content maximum (S max) or crystallization rate was observed only at low supercooling (values of ΔT below 15°C). The Avrami k n decreased as n values increased, indicating that SE inhibited growth and impeded nucleation. Addition of SFO modified the polymorphic behavior of milk fat, most likely owing …

Striving For Sustainability: The Place Of Values And Beliefs In Delivering Sustainable Aid, Alan Pieratt Jun 2006

Striving For Sustainability: The Place Of Values And Beliefs In Delivering Sustainable Aid, Alan Pieratt

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In spite of decades of western developmental aid and billions of dollars in resource transfers, the number of poor in the world remains at astonishingly high levels. This paper argues that in many cases poverty remains stubbornly rooted because of the moral values and spiritual beliefs of the poor. A review of developmental literature confirms that Western aid systematically ignores these causes of poverty and is often fragmentary and elitist in its delivery. The result is developmental activity that is ineffective. This paper argues that aid is more likely to be sustainable if local values and beliefs are taken into …

Environmental Signals Generate A Differential And Coordinated Expression Of The Heme Receptor Gene Family Of Bartonella Quintana, James M. Battisti, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S, Smitherman, Nermi L. Parrow, Michael F. Minnick Jun 2006

Environmental Signals Generate A Differential And Coordinated Expression Of The Heme Receptor Gene Family Of Bartonella Quintana, James M. Battisti, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S, Smitherman, Nermi L. Parrow, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Of all bacteria, Bartonella quintana has the highest reported in vitro hemin requirement, yet an explanation for this remains elusive. To produce diseases such as trench fever, endocarditis, and bacillary angiomatosis, B. quintana must survive and replicate in the disparate environments of the Pediculus humanus corporis (body louse) gut and the human vasculature. We previously identified a five-member family of hemin binding proteins (Hbps) synthesized by B. quintana that bind hemin on the outer surface but share no similarity to known bacterial heme receptors. In the present study, we examine the transcription, regulation, and synthesis of this virulence factor family …

Genetically Modified Crops In The Philippines: Can Existing Biosafety Regulations Adequately Protect The Environment?, Christina L. Richmond Jun 2006

Genetically Modified Crops In The Philippines: Can Existing Biosafety Regulations Adequately Protect The Environment?, Christina L. Richmond

Washington International Law Journal

Global concern persists about the use of genetically modified crops (“GM crops”). This concern originates from the divergent perspectives of nations with a stake in either the production or consumption of GM crops. Proponents of GM crops in developing countries claim that the crops could increase food supply by improving plant resistance to pesticides, thereby alleviating the need for farmers to purchase chemicals that are frequently expensive or unavailable. However, many organizations and countries are hesitant or outright opposed to GM crops, particularly regarding their potentially undesirable ecological and agricultural consequences. As one of the first Asian nations to approve …

Hyperhomocysteinemia And Coronary Artery Disease In Pakistan, M Perwaiz Iqbal Jun 2006

Hyperhomocysteinemia And Coronary Artery Disease In Pakistan, M Perwaiz Iqbal

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

The relative risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) in Pakistani men is highest in early ages. Majority of those suffering from CAD belong to the lower middle socioeconomic stratum of the society. Mild hyperhomocysteinemia (concentration of plasma homocysteine between 15-25 micromol/l) is very commonly seen in Pakistani patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) as well as in normal healthy subjects. There appears to be a lack of association between hyperhomocysteinemia and CAD in Pakistani population. There is also no evidence of association of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase 677C>T mutation with CAD in this population. High prevalence of deficiency of folate …

Epiphyll Community Diversity On Anthurium And Philodendron (Araceae), June 2006, Ellen Frondorf Jun 2006

Epiphyll Community Diversity On Anthurium And Philodendron (Araceae), June 2006, Ellen Frondorf

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Little is known about epiphyll community diversity. This study compared epiphyll diversity growing on leaves from Anthurium and Philodendron. I hypothesized that the effect of a collecting vein, present on Anthurium, but not on Philodendron, would affect microhabitats and epiphyll species diversity. I predicted lower epiphyll abundance on Anthurium than on Philodendron. Fifteen leaves were collected from each plant species. Morphological species of epiphylls were counted for total percent cover, as well as the total area of the leaves. The Shannon-Weiner Index was used, along with Margalof’s index of richness. Analysis was done at metacommunity (all the leaves of Anthurium …

Seed Preference In The Central American Agouti, Dasyprocta Punctata, June 2006, Kristen Coogan Jun 2006

Seed Preference In The Central American Agouti, Dasyprocta Punctata, June 2006, Kristen Coogan

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Scatter-hoarding animals in the tropics typically depend on a cached supply of reserves when food is scarce. The Optimal Foraging Theory seeks to explain the behaviors these organisms exhibit upon prey selection. It is important for these scatter-hoarding animals to choose the most beneficial food item that will increase their energy intake. Central American agouties (Dasyprocta puncata) were presented with two differently sized seed species, the water apple (Syzygium malaccense) and the peach palm (Bactris gasipaes). A total of 400 flagged seeds were used, 200 of each species in groups of 20 seeds per species, over a 14 day period …

Bufo Marinus (Amphibian)

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

B. marinus is a heavily built toad with short legs. It can grow upto 15 cm long sometimes. Fingers lack webbing, but the toes are heavily webbed. Adults have a rough, warty skin, colored tan, brown or dark brown, dull green or black. The tympanum is distinct, about one half to two thirds the size of the eye. Venom glands are widely distributed around the surface of the skin, but can also be aggregated together to form large parotoid glands, found on each shoulder. these glands are able to ooze venom. (Gautherot, 2000) Eggs are laid in long strands. Tadpoles …

The Effects Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation On Indirect Indicators Of Muscle Damage And Performance, Beau K. Greer Jun 2006

The Effects Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation On Indirect Indicators Of Muscle Damage And Performance, Beau K. Greer

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine whether branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation attenuates indirect indicators of muscle damage, lowers ratings of perceived exertion, and improves aerobic performance as compared to an isocaloric, carbohydrate (CHO) beverage or a non-caloric placebo beverage. Nine, untrained males (VO2 max 36.26 2.23 ml/kg/min) performed three 90-minute cycling bouts at 55% VO2 max followed by a 15-minute time trial. Metabolic data was collected every 15 minutes during the steady-state ride, and indirect muscle damage markers were assessed pre, post, 4-hours, 24-hours, and 48-hours post-exercise. Pre and post-exercise concentrations of the BCAA and glucose were …
