Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The first transgenic corn hybrids expressing the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry3Bb1 protein to control corn rootworm (Diabrotica spp.) larvae were registered for commercial use in 2003. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Cry3Bb1 protein in combination with a cucurbitacin bait on adult feeding and longevity of both organophosphate-resistant and -susceptible western corn rootworms, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In choice and no-choice tests, possible repellency to the Bt protein was quantified by comparing beetle consumption of cellulose disks treated with three concentrations of Bt in combination with a feeding stimulant (Invite EC) to disks treated …

Contribution Of Natural Food Sources To Reproductive Behaviour, Fecundity And Longevity Of Ceratitis Cosyra, C. Fasciventris And C. Capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae), A. Manrakhan, S. A. Lux

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The influence of food sources comprising the natural diet on the reproductive behaviour, fecundity and longevity of three African fruit flies Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. capitata (Wiedemann) was investigated. Three natural food sources, varying in protein and sugar content, were evaluated. These included bird droppings (farm chicken), aphid honeydew and guava (Psidium guajava L.) juice. For C. fasciventris and C. capitata, flies fed on a protein-rich diet displayed higher frequency of calling, mating and oviposition than flies fed on a protein-poor diet, whilst for C. cosyra, quality of diet significantly influenced the mating behaviour of the …

Women And Welfare: The Politics Of Coping With New Social Risks In Chile And Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble Jun 2006

Women And Welfare: The Politics Of Coping With New Social Risks In Chile And Uruguay, Jennifer Pribble

Political Science Faculty Publications

Women make up a disproportionate share of the world’s poor, and Latin America is no exception to this trend. Nevertheless, very few studies of social policy in the region have investigated why the gendered character of welfare provision varies across countries. This article addresses that question through a comparative historical analysis of Chile and Uruguay and concludes that variation in the gendered nature of each state’s social policy regime resulted from a two-step process. In the first stage, female labor force participation, the mobilizing capacity of women, and policy legacies differentiated the two countries, placing Chile on a less equitable …

Avian Affairs: A Study Of The Occurrence And Benefits Of Extra-Pair Breeding Behavior In Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Amy Catherine Dolan Jun 2006

Avian Affairs: A Study Of The Occurrence And Benefits Of Extra-Pair Breeding Behavior In Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Amy Catherine Dolan

Dissertations and Theses

Over three consecutive breeding seasons I examined the breeding system of Eastern Kingbirds in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in SE, Oregon. To assess genetic paternity, I optimized seven microsatellite markers and determined that extra pair paternity was common. Extra-pair young were present in approximately 60% of nests, representing 47% of young. I examined implications of extra-pair paternity from three perspectives.

First, I examined the impact of extra-pair paternity on the opportunity for sexual selection within a socially monogamous system and identified correlates of male reproductive success. Some males were successful at the expense of others, and 24% of males did …

Rethinking And Reshaping Early Childhood Care And Education Policy : Visions And Directions For The Future., Alison Elliott Jun 2006

Rethinking And Reshaping Early Childhood Care And Education Policy : Visions And Directions For The Future., Alison Elliott

Early Childhood Education

At no time in the recent past has there been such keen interest in early childhood education. Finally, the decades of research showing the benefits of strong, rich early childhood programs on children's development and learning have captured community attention. Quality early childhood programs help children reach key developmental milestones and close learning gaps. At some point though, discussion on benefits and values must translate into vision, policy and action. This presentation is intended to highlight key issues facing early childhood education, to stress the importance getting the right mix of early childhood services, and to foreshadow some policy directions …

Images Of Water And Woman In The Arts, Zdenka Kalnicka Jun 2006

Images Of Water And Woman In The Arts, Zdenka Kalnicka

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Archetypal connection of woman and water is ambiguous: it includes the connection of water and woman with life as well as with death. The paper explores the ways, how two sides of this connection were depicted in the artworks created by women and men artists, focusing on their gender differentiated approach (Albín Brunovsk_ and Germaine Richier, Edward Burne-Jones and Edith Rimmington). As an inspiration for reconsideration of the relationship between Life and Death, the potential of old symbol of the frog as the symbol of birth, death and re-birth is examined (Susan Makov).

How Beneficial Has Water Technology Been For Rural Nepalese Women?, Bhawana Upadhya

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper aims to explore the effect of irrigation technology on women of rural Nepalese terai communities. This is done by looking at the effect of technological change on rural women of three different classes in terms of their absolute and relative access to income, food consumption and workload. The article also explores how technology adoption helps enhance rural women's bargaining power and how division of labor is gendered. Case study approach together with other participatory rural appraisal techniques had been used to gather field information.. The study reveals that even in a small social setting, gender identities prevail over …

Deterring Roper's Juveniles: Using A Law And Economics Approach To Show That The Logic Of Roper Implies That Juveniles Require The Death Penalty More Than Adults, Moin A. Yahya Jun 2006

Deterring Roper's Juveniles: Using A Law And Economics Approach To Show That The Logic Of Roper Implies That Juveniles Require The Death Penalty More Than Adults, Moin A. Yahya

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

In Roper v. Simmons, the United States Supreme Court declared the death penalty for juveniles unconstitutional. It relied on three reasons, one of which concerns this article, namely the theory that juveniles are less culpable and deterrable than adults. The Court relied on the American Medical Association's amicus brief, which purported to scientifically show that juveniles had less developed brains than adults. The Court characterized juveniles as being risk-lovers who highly prefer the present over the future, who love gains no matter how risky, who do not care for losses, and who cannot engage in proper cost-benefit analysis. This is …

Permaculture Garden Design For The Cloud Forest School-The Centro De Educación Creativa, June 2006, Lauren Fifield Jun 2006

Permaculture Garden Design For The Cloud Forest School-The Centro De Educación Creativa, June 2006, Lauren Fifield

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This is a proposal for the creation of a permaculture garden at the Cloud Forest School- Centro de Educación Creativa (CFS-CEC), in Monteverde, Costa Rica. This garden will be used for food production, but will also be used for educational purposes. Permaculture gardens teach students how to live with nature. They are able to produce food for themselves in a way that uses the least amount of land as possible, thus leaving this land for forest species. The garden provides various teaching tools such as native species, gap area, gardening techniques, mimicry complexes as well attracts various species. It will …

Sequestration And Release Of Nutrients From Mist By Epiphytic Mosses And Orchids, June 2006, Lauren Bennett Jun 2006

Sequestration And Release Of Nutrients From Mist By Epiphytic Mosses And Orchids, June 2006, Lauren Bennett

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Epiphytes sequester required nutrients and moisture from mist; the remaining moisture is then released as throughfall for other organisms. I proposed that there were differences between types of cloud forest epiphytes in the amounts of nutrients that they sequester. Using mist collectors filled with three different types of epiphytes (mosses, orchids without pseudobulbs Pleurothallis ruscifolia, and orchids with pseudobulbs Encyclia pseudopygmaea) and a control (empty) mist collector, I compared concentration of mist that passed through the control collector and three epiphyte groups throughfall of volume, nitrate concentration, phosphate concentration and pH level. I found no significant difference in the volume, …

Managing Perplexing Congregations: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Church In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan Jun 2006

Managing Perplexing Congregations: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Church In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan

Student Scholarship

How religious congregations adapt to change determines whether they will continue to thrive (Ammerman, 1997). Chinese immigrant religious organizations in America face a built-in clash between the generations of Overseas-Born Chinese (OBC) and American-Born Chinese (ABC) that is most visible in their religious congregations (Ling & Cheuk, 1999). This study identifies how Chinese congregations develop interpretive schemes (Bartunek, 1984) that help bridge the generational transition and lead to successful adaptation or its hindrance.

Angiokeratoma Of Tongue:A Series Of 14 Cases, Nausheen Yaqoob, Aamir Ahsan, Zubair Ahmed, Akhter Husain, Rashid Ahmed, Naila Kayani, Shahid Pervez, Sheema Hassan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Angiokeratomas (AC) are vascular lesions which are defined histologically as one or more dilated blood vessels lying directly subepidermal and showing an epidermal proliferative reaction with ectatic capillaries in the papillary dermis. Only three other cases of isolated mucosal angiokeratoma have been reported in the indexed literature. We reviewed all cases of angiokeratoma located on the tongue, diagnosed in our department during a study period of 10 years (1995-2005). Histologically all 14 cases showed dilated and congested blood vessels in the upper papillary dermis. They lack deep dermal involvement. Hyperkeratosis and acanthosis were also seen in most of the cases. …

Using The Outcome Questionnaire 45.2 In Obesity Treatment, Adam L. Arechiga Jun 2006

Using The Outcome Questionnaire 45.2 In Obesity Treatment, Adam L. Arechiga

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if the Outcome Questionnaire 45.2 (OQ-45) can be used in the treatment of obesity to predict participant dropout and initial treatment success, in terms of weight loss (Lambert et. al, 2002a). The OQ-45 has been used with success to predict dropout from psychotherapy in clinical populations. It was hypothesized that higher pretreatment OQ-45 scores would be associated with less program completion and less weight loss by the end of treatment.

Method: The study employed a non-experimental time series design. Seventy-eight participants were recruited from the three local obesity treatment programs, which …

The Environmental Impact Of Dietary Choice And Agriculture In California, Harold J. Marlow Jr. Jun 2006

The Environmental Impact Of Dietary Choice And Agriculture In California, Harold J. Marlow Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Food demand influences agricultural production. Modern agricultural practices have resulted in polluted soil, air and water, eroded soil, dependence on imported oil, and loss of biodiversity. The goal of this research is to investigate the environmental impact of pesticide and fertilizer application, water consumption, and energy used to produce commodities for a vegetarian and non vegetarian diet in California. The working assumption is that greater number and amount of inputs are associated with greater environmental impact. The literature supports this notion. To accomplish this goal, dietary preferences were quantified using the Adventist Health Study and state agricultural data were collected …

Low Birth Weight, Very Low Birth Weight And Infant Mortality In San Bernardino County : A Secondary Analysis Of Maternal Factors, Rebecca D. Nanyonjo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: National and state infant mortality rates have slowly declined over the last several years. Despite this reduction, San Bernardino County still has one of the highest infant mortality rates in California and racial disparities between Black and White infants not only persist but continue to widen. These disparities remain at the forefront of concern. Healthy People 2010 target objectives have yet to be reached, while national and state proposed plans have supported the statement that a community's largest health problem is initiated by its infant mortality. The purpose of this study was to investigate maternal factors through use of …

Food Choice In Frugivorous Bats, June 2006, Lauren Riegler Jun 2006

Food Choice In Frugivorous Bats, June 2006, Lauren Riegler

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Frugivorous bats are important dispersers for many tropical plants and their conservation depends on furthering knowledge in their foraging behaviors and food preferences (Brosset et al. 1996). This study investigated a possible fruit preference of five frugivorous bat species (Carollia brevicauda, Artibeus lituratus, Artibeus jamaicensis, Artibeus toltecus and Platyrrhinus vittatus) found in Monteverde, Costa Rica among three wild fruit species (Solanum umbellatum, Solanum aphyodendron and Ficus pertusa) and two cultivated fruit species (Musa accuminata and Carica papaya). Fruits were presented to the bats in the Bat Jungle of Monteverde, where the foraging of bats can be closely observed. Artibeus toltecus …

The Effectiveness Of A Public Nutrition Education And Wellness System Program, Wash A. Jones, Carolyn J. Nobles, Alvin Larke Jr

Journal of Extension

Enrollment of limited resource clientele in public nutrition education and wellness system programs is expected to produce positive changes in food preparation, food purchase, and health status. The study described here evaluated the effectiveness of the Families First: Nutrition Education and Wellness System (FF NEWS) Program, a nutrition education program in selected 1890 institutions, in achieving positive changes. Program participation influenced participants to make positive changes in food-preparation and food-purchasing practices and resulted in a positive "trend," though not statistically significant, in health status. The culturally sensitive curriculum was an important factor in individual participation and positive behavior changes.

Quorum Sensing In Dimorphic Fungi: Farnesol And Beyond, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Audrey L. Atkin, Jacob M. Hornby Jun 2006

Quorum Sensing In Dimorphic Fungi: Farnesol And Beyond, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Audrey L. Atkin, Jacob M. Hornby

Papers in Microbiology

Production of farnesol by Candida albicans is the first quorum- sensing system discovered in a eukaryote (29). In C. albicans, accumulated farnesol affects both dimorphism (29, 50) and biofilm formation (62). Fungal dimorphism is defined (64) as an environmentally controlled reversible interconversion of morphology, particularly yeast and mycelial morphologies. Interest in this shift derives from the dimorphic character of many fungi that are pathogenic toward plants and animals (64). Numerous chemical and environmental parameters can shift the yeast-mycelium dimorphism, including temperature, pH, glucose levels, nitrogen source, carbon dioxide levels, transition metals, chelating agents, and inoculum size or initial cell …

The Impact Of Periodontal Infections On Systemic Diseases. An Update For Medical Practitioners, Sukumaran Anil, Hamdan S. Al-Ghamdi Jun 2006

The Impact Of Periodontal Infections On Systemic Diseases. An Update For Medical Practitioners, Sukumaran Anil, Hamdan S. Al-Ghamdi

Saudi Medical Journal

Oral health status is an integral component of a general health and well-being of an individual. Knowledge about the link between periodontal disease and systemic diseases are growing rapidly. Increasing evidence is available from many investigators to indicate periodontitis as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, low birth weight infants and pulmonary diseases. Both epidemiologists and researchers in oral microbiology have contributed significantly to the new paradigm of periodontal disease. Although additional studies are needed to determine the mechanisms by which such associations exist; available research clearly demonstrates that oral diseases and conditions are not only markers for …
