Establishing A Web-Based Integration Module In .Net And Labview Environment, Yuqiu You Jan 2006

Establishing A Web-Based Integration Module In .Net And Labview Environment, Yuqiu You

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The top problems faced by manufacturing enterprises to implement system integration solutions are confusing solutions and terminology, the lack of understanding of cross-domain technologies, and the lack of business justification. In this study, a generalized web-based partial module was established to interface between manufacturing control functions and higher management level functions in a manufacturing enterprise. It is composed of three parts, a LabVIEW-based data collector, a system server, and a web-based interface. The data collector was constructed as an open source system module for data collection from LabVIEW-based control applications. It can be integrated into LabVIEW VIs without requiring extra …

Factors Influencing Non-Implementation Of The Iso 9000 Quality Management System Among Business Organizations In The Caribbean Sub-Region, Errol F. Samuel

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As developing economies face the challenges of liberalization in the global market place, the ISO 9000 Quality Management System (QMS) must be an integrated concept and tool in the planning and implementation of these counties' national and regional technological and socioeconomic development programs. This concern is especially acute for the countries in the Caribbean sub-region where most business organizations are not ISO 9000 certified. This study was conducted to identify factors that prevent public and private sector business organizations in the Caribbean sub-region from pursuing and obtaining the ISO 9000 certification. The study employed the survey research methodology and utilized …

Filmmaking In The Precinct House And The Genre Of Documentary Film, Jessica Silbey Jan 2006

Filmmaking In The Precinct House And The Genre Of Documentary Film, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores side-by-side two contemporary and related film trends: the recent popular enthusiasm over the previously arty documentary film and the mandatory filming of custodial interrogations and confessions.

The history and criticism of documentary film, indeed contemporary movie-going, understands the documentary genre as political and social advocacy (recent examples are Michael Moore's Farenheit 9/11 and Errol Morris's Fog of War). Judges, advocates, and legislatures, however, assume that films of custodial interrogations and confessions reveal a truth and lack a distorting point of view. As this Article explains, the trend at law, although aimed at furthering venerable criminal justice principles, …

Too Much, Too Little: Religion In The Public Schools, Jay D. Wexler Jan 2006

Too Much, Too Little: Religion In The Public Schools, Jay D. Wexler

Faculty Scholarship

The current state of religion in the nation's public schools is odd indeed. On the one hand, the courts have consistently held that public school teachers may not lead their students in an organized prayer. Yet on the other hand, most people seem to agree that there is no problem with those same teachers leading their students in the Pledge of Allegiance, an exercise that asks students on a daily basis, not only to explicitly recognize the existence of a single god, but also to link the nation's very identity to that highly contested theological proposition. Likewise, despite the fact …

Characterisation Of Cell Types In Abalone (Haliotis Spp.) Tissues Using Immunohistochemical Techniques, Leanne Harris, Nuala O'Byrne-Ring, Helen Lambkin

Articles

The increasing popularity of abalone as a seafood delicacy has led to the rapid development of abalone aquaculture worldwide. The commercial and economic importance of this industry has resulted in an increasing interest in the biology of this particular shellfish genus. In this study we focus on the identification of structural, functional and proliferative proteins in two species of abalone shellfish, Haliotis discus hannai and Haliotis tuberculata. Monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that react with proteins in vertebrate and invertebrate tissues were selected and applied to abalone tissues. Cross sections of whole animals were analysed using avidin–biotin immunoperoxidase staining protocols. In …

The Crimmigration Crisis: Immigrants, Crime, And Sovereign Power, Juliet Stumpf Jan 2006

The Crimmigration Crisis: Immigrants, Crime, And Sovereign Power, Juliet Stumpf

American University Law Review

This article provides a fresh theoretical perspective on the most important development in immigration law today: the convergence of immigration and criminal law. It proposes a unifying theory - membership theory - for why these two areas of law recently have become so connected, and why that convergence is troubling. Membership theory restricts individual rights and privileges to those who are members of a social contract between the government and the people.

Membership theory provides decisionmakers with justification for excluding individuals from society, using immigration and criminal law as the means of exclusion. It operates in the intersection between criminal …

New Rules For Electronic Discovery, So Now What?: Daubert's Impact On Determining What Is Not Reasonably Accessible, Neal H. Lewis

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

This article addresses the effects of technological growth on the development of electronic discovery as suggested by the latest amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Part I discusses American efforts to facilitate technological growth, underscoring the United States' embrace of technological innovation and recognizing the legal system's capability of handling complex issues associated with emerging technology. Part II outlines a brief history of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, identifying flexibility as the hallmark of American procedural jurisprudence and emphasizing the role that discovery abuse concerns have played in the rule modifications. It then touches on the recent …

Defining Abusive Software To Protect Computer Users From The Threat Of Spyware, Chad A. Kirby Jan 2006

Defining Abusive Software To Protect Computer Users From The Threat Of Spyware, Chad A. Kirby

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

"Spyware" has become a major problem for computer users over the past few years. In response, quite a few states have enacted statutes intended to control the problem. But most of the existing legislation has taken the wrong approach to the problem of defining spyware. Generally speaking, most legislative definitions of spyware either have been too technology-specific to adapt to future developments, or have swept too broadly. Additionally, many legislative definitions of spyware have focused too little on protecting consumers. This article argues that any effective regulatory definition must have three characteristics: 1) it must protect the user's control over …

The World Summit On The Information Society And The Future Of Internet Governance, Travis D. Shahan Jan 2006

The World Summit On The Information Society And The Future Of Internet Governance, Travis D. Shahan

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The final meeting of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), which concluded in November 2005, was built up to be a showdown over the future of Internet governance. When the dust cleared, the issue of Internet governance was still far from settled. For the most part, the delegates to the WSIS agreed to maintain the status quo for the time being, but they also agreed to a mechanism for continuing the Internet governance debate in the future. This paper will analyze the most notable agreements of the WSIS and their effects on the future of Internet governance.

Polygraph In Trade Secret Litigation: Overcoming Misconceptions And Paving The Way For Admissibility, Elisabeth A. Wilson Jan 2006

Polygraph In Trade Secret Litigation: Overcoming Misconceptions And Paving The Way For Admissibility, Elisabeth A. Wilson

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Ponder for a moment what you know about polygraph. Polygraph is sometimes referred to as a "lie detector" test. You may have seen a polygraph exam on television or a movie, but most people have a very limited understanding of what a polygraph examination really is. In fact, most depictions of polygraph seen in popular culture are overwhelmingly misleading and inaccurate. Likewise, the legal community's understanding of polygraph and how it can be utilized is scant, at best.

Courts have been divided for years over what role polygraph should play in litigation and have struggled with questions of admissibility. Confusion …

Construction Of Improved Temperature-Sensitive And Mobilizable Vectors And Their Use For Constructing Mutations In The Adhesin-Encoding Acm Gene Of Poorly Transformable Clinical Enterococcus Faecium Strains, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Kavindra V Singh, Barbara E Murray Jan 2006

Construction Of Improved Temperature-Sensitive And Mobilizable Vectors And Their Use For Constructing Mutations In The Adhesin-Encoding Acm Gene Of Poorly Transformable Clinical Enterococcus Faecium Strains, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Kavindra V Singh, Barbara E Murray

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Inactivation by allelic exchange in clinical isolates of the emerging nosocomial pathogen Enterococcus faecium has been hindered by lack of efficient tools, and, in this study, transformation of clinical isolates was found to be particularly problematic. For this reason, a vector for allelic replacement (pTEX5500ts) was constructed that includes (i) the pWV01-based gram-positive repAts replication region, which is known to confer a high degree of temperature intolerance, (ii) Escherichia coli oriR from pUC18, (iii) two extended multiple-cloning sites located upstream and downstream of one of the marker genes for efficient cloning of flanking regions for double-crossover mutagenesis, (iv) transcriptional terminator …

Reconsidering Public Relations’ Infatuation With Dialogue: Why Engagement And Reconciliation Can Be More Ethical Than Symmetry And Reciprocity, Kevin L. Stoker, Kati Tusinski Berg Jan 2006

Reconsidering Public Relations’ Infatuation With Dialogue: Why Engagement And Reconciliation Can Be More Ethical Than Symmetry And Reciprocity, Kevin L. Stoker, Kati Tusinski Berg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Advocates of dialogic communication have promoted two-way symmetrical communication as the most effective and ethical model for public relations. This article uses John Durham Peters’s critique of dialogic communication to reconsider this infatuation with dialogue. In this article, we argue that dialogue’s potential for selectivity and tyranny poses moral problems for public relations. Dialogue’s emphasis on reciprocal communication also saddles public relations with ethically questionable quid pro quo relationships. We contend that dissemination can be more just than dialogue because it demands more integrity of the source and recognizes the freedom and individuality of the source. The type of communication, …

Stories Of Community: The First Ten Years Of Nike Women's Advertising, Jean M. Grow Jan 2006

Stories Of Community: The First Ten Years Of Nike Women's Advertising, Jean M. Grow

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This semiotic analysis of early Nike women's advertising explores the evolution of the women's brand from its launch in 1990 through 2000, and includes twenty-seven print campaigns. The semiotic analysis is enhanced by in-depth interviews of the creative team. The study is framed by a single research question. What symbolically ties these ten years of advertising into a cohesive whole and how? Ultimately, three distinct mediated communities emerge. The story behind these communities, expressed semiotically and orally, suggests that the power of this advertising lies in its mediated construction of community life. The resonance of these ads is rooted in …

The Demise Of Native American Mascots: It's Time To Do The Right Thing, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose – The intent of this article is to show why the use of Native American mascots, logos, and nicknames by sports teams perpetuates depictions that are perceived as harmful and racist by Native Americans.

Design/methodology/approach – This article examines data from published research, personal correspondence, and essays by Native Americans so that non-natives can understand the issue from the native perspective. It also calls into question previous communication efforts that may have limited the voices of Native Americans.

Findings – By examining the meaning of warriors and other cultural symbols for Native Americans and by exploring the different views …

College Students’ Responses To Antismoking Messages: Denial, Defiance, And Other Boomerang Effects, Joyce M. Wolburg Jan 2006

College Students’ Responses To Antismoking Messages: Denial, Defiance, And Other Boomerang Effects, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Despite the success of antismoking campaigns that aim to prevent young teens from smoking, this qualitative study provides strong evidence that different initiatives are needed for college students, particularly those who already smoke. When asked for responses to current antismoking messages, nonsmokers generally championed the cause; however, smokers often responded with anger, defiance, denial, and other negative responses. Consumers who respond in this manner are not well served by existing strategies, and money used for such campaigns could be better spent. New strategies are offered in hopes that antismoking campaigns can communicate more effectively with one high-risk group—college student smokers.
