Now I Know Someone With A Disability: Using Fiction To Help General Education Preservice Teachers Understand The Inclusion Classroom, Suzanne Horn, Cheryl Morgan, Annette Heim
Now I Know Someone With A Disability: Using Fiction To Help General Education Preservice Teachers Understand The Inclusion Classroom, Suzanne Horn, Cheryl Morgan, Annette Heim
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This case study reports on a general education, preservice teacher book club. The club read young adult literature in which the central character had an intellectual disability. Although all fears were not alleviated, general education preservice teachers reported a higher comfort level about teaching in inclusive classrooms after seeing life through the eyes of their fictional character. Getting to know their character gave them a level of exposure to a disabled person with a disability they may have been too uncomfortable to explore with a “real” person. With this new understanding, preservice teachers had a context in which to share …

Preservice Teachers' Perceived Self-Efficacy After Engaging In Mock Interviews, Robin K. Franklin, Justin Mitchell
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This mixedmethods action research study examined the impact mock interviews had on pre-service teachers’ perceptions related to professional job interviewing when implemented within a college of education’s early childhood and elementary senior education methods block. Face-to-face mock interviews were added in hopes to enhance teaching methods in the College of Education’s undergraduate senior block and empower future educators toward excellence in the field of education. The results from the study included both quantitative Likert scale and qualitative constructed response survey items. After interpreting the quantitative and qualitative data separately, the researchers examined areas of intersection from the data to distill …
The Unlikely Outcome Of A Struggling Kindergartner: A Cognitive Rags-To-Riches Tale, Amanda M. Butler
The Unlikely Outcome Of A Struggling Kindergartner: A Cognitive Rags-To-Riches Tale, Amanda M. Butler
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Despite teachers’ implementation of research-based strategies, many students fail to make adequate progress. In some cases, this stems from a neurophysiological response that is beyond the teacher’s and student’s control. Drawing on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, unintended findings from a previous study illuminate a larger, deeply convoluted issue that will promote unique conversations in education circles. These findings bear significant discoveries that could alter the trajectory for failing students and elevate the teaching profession.

Difficult Discussions: Critical Conversations As A Culturally Sustaining Teaching Practice In The College Classroom, Crystal Glover, Sherell Fuller
Difficult Discussions: Critical Conversations As A Culturally Sustaining Teaching Practice In The College Classroom, Crystal Glover, Sherell Fuller
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
As women of color in academia committed to matters of equity and inclusion, we remain undaunted by the idea of having difficult, but necessary discussions on race and ethnicity in the college classroom. After years of facilitating these types of conversations among mostly white, middle class, female teacher candidates, we began to notice an even greater reluctance than normal on the part of our students to authentically engage in difficult discussions in the classroom. As the sociopolitical climate within the United States shifted and became more divisive along racial and political lines, those divisions found their way into our classrooms. …

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This paper documents the author's development of structured curriculum enrichment workshops for pre-service teachers at the University of South Carolina Aiken. Responding to the perceived gap in effective training on antibias education among teacher candidates at USC Aiken, the workshops were designed to engage teacher candidates in hands-on, fast-paced, and interactive experiences and to invite students to evaluate materials, practice strategies, and grow as antibias educators. The workshops were also designed to support students as they develop the critical self-reflection skills necessary for successful implementation of antibias practices. By detailing the process used to develop and implement an antibias education …

Digital Badges And The K-12 Classroom: A Guide For Teachers, Erin Besser
Digital Badges And The K-12 Classroom: A Guide For Teachers, Erin Besser
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Getting started with digital badging can be a fun way for educators to integrate current technology trends, however, digital badging has also been shown to increase student engagement (Abramovich, Schunn, & Higashi, 2013). Badging provides learners an opportunity to display their knowledge for the world to see, appealing to professionals in their fields (Randall, Harrison, & West, 2013). While badges themselves are not necessarily assessment, they depict that assessment has taken place and the criteria that were needed to get there (Ostashewski & Reid, 2015). Introducing a new method of assessment and technology can be overwhelming at best. This article …

School Newspapers: A Key To Democracy, Kristie Camp
School Newspapers: A Key To Democracy, Kristie Camp
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This paper discusses the importance of rebuilding journalism programs in high schools as a way to help preserve democratic ideals in our society at large. Since effective high school journalism programs teach students who serve as newspaper staff members to be responsible gatherers of information as well as discerning researchers, these student newspaper staff members are also more likely to apply a discriminating point of view or a perceptive mindset when they become adults. In addition, a strong high school newspaper program will engage the student body in open dialogue and give voice to the many different perspectives in any …

Read To Succeed: South Carolina's Unique Approach To Literacy Gateway Retention Policies, Jennifer Barrett-Tatum
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
South Carolina's Read to Succeed Act, a state policy involving mandated intervention and retention for students third grade and below, began at the start of the 2017-2018 school year. Similar to past research on retention, a recent study of over 1,150 South Carolina state elementary school teachers, literacy support specialists, and administrators provides that the majority of respondents were unfamiliar with research on the effectiveness of retention as a means of intervention and were also unaware of many of the details of RTS, including Good Cause Exemptions for student retention. This article seeks to inform educators about what decades of …

The South Carolina Principal Applicant Pool: Are Principal Preparation Students Ready To Take Lead?, Henry Tran
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
School districts have long struggled with filling principal positions with qualified personnel. While administrative certification programs continue to certify new potential principals, many who graduate from such programs do not apply for principal positions. This descriptive study seeks to explore SC education leadership students' (n=34) perspectives on numerous issues pertaining to why this may be. The largest barrier cited was long hours on the job. In addition, inquiry is made to ascertain what may make the position more attractive to prospective principals. Results are discussed.

Reconceptualizing Educational Technology Integration In A Middle Level Teacher Preparation Program, Deborah H. Mcmurtrie, Bridget K. Coleman, Gary J. Senn
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Our middle level education (MLE) faculty recently engaged in a self-study guided by this research question: How is our university preparing our MLE teacher candidates to integrate technology in teaching and learning? There were two overarching goals: 1) identify where we can introduce, practice, reinforce, and master technology skills and concepts. 2) reconceptualize our technology integration course. Our process included collaborating with stakeholders, surveying teacher candidates, examining theoretical underpinnings, exploring research-based best practices, and analyzing our programs. Data was collected through multi-year technology surveys and semi-structured focus group interviews. We grouped survey data into three broad technology categories: instructional delivery, …

Technology Beliefs And Self-Efficacy - A Pilot Study, Michael Cook, Ron Knorr
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This research was a pilot study for validation of an instrument used to measure changes in teachers' technology beliefs and self-efficiency after a course in the use of educational technology. The research literature revealed high interest but low self-efficiency in use of such technology among teachers. After pilot survey validation, the survey was administered pre and post course to a cohort of participants in a concentrated graduate/professional development course. Results of this study indicated no statistically significant change in teacher technology beliefs, but the results showed statistically significant improvement in teacher technology self- efficacy across multiple educational technology platforms. Explanations …

Integration And Innovation: Our Journey To The Meshing Of Technology, Pedagogy, And Content Knowledge For Teacher Education, Stacy Burr, Susan Fernandez, Laura Kaufmann, Judy Beck, Cece Toole
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Ever since the inception of horn books and one-room schoolhouses, curriculum 'silos' have proliferated the field of education. Once information and communicative technology (ICT) arrived at the schoolhouse doors, the need for compartmentalization concluded. Integration and collaboration have now become the essential means and methodologies in the education profession. Moving from the isolation of specific curricular pedagogical content knowledge to the unification of learning with technology as a principal means for consolidating the complexities of teaching and learning has precipitated the introduction and incorporation of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model. This paper illustrates how the scaffolding of the …
