Uncertainty Quantification Of Satellite Precipitation Estimation And Monte Carlo Assessment Of The Error Propagation Into Hydrologic Response, Hamid Moradkhani, Yang Hong, Soroosh Sorooshian Aug 2006

Uncertainty Quantification Of Satellite Precipitation Estimation And Monte Carlo Assessment Of The Error Propagation Into Hydrologic Response, Hamid Moradkhani, Yang Hong, Soroosh Sorooshian

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The aim of this paper is to foster the development of an end-to-end uncertainty analysis framework that can quantify satellite-based precipitation estimation error characteristics and to assess the influence of the error propagation into hydrological simulation. First, the error associated with the satellite-based precipitation estimates is assumed as a nonlinear function of rainfall space-time integration scale, rain intensity, and sampling frequency. Parameters of this function are determined by using high-resolution satellite-based precipitation estimates and gauge-corrected radar rainfall data over the southwestern United States. Parameter sensitivity analysis at 16 selected 5ø ? 5ø latitude-longitude grids shows about 12?16% of variance of …

Investigating Professional Development In Technology For Literacy Teachers, Michanne Hoctor Edd Aug 2006

Investigating Professional Development In Technology For Literacy Teachers, Michanne Hoctor Edd

Dissertations

Citrus Heights (a pseudonym) School District is an award-winning exemplar of technology integration. This small urban district has focused its resources on the re-design of its K-8 classrooms and curriculum to support educational reform through the use of technology, including hardware, software, and teacher professional development. Current best practices suggest that while staff development may begin with conventional in-service training, it should move quickly beyond to efforts that support teachers’ development as professionals involved in decision-making, inquiry, and leadership in their classroom teaching. In order to develop as professionals, teachers specifically need help and support in integrating new knowledge and …

The Influence Of Feedlots On Epiphytic Lichen Species Composition And Cover In Eastern Nebraska., Margaret K. Reed Aug 2006

The Influence Of Feedlots On Epiphytic Lichen Species Composition And Cover In Eastern Nebraska., Margaret K. Reed

Student Work

Environmental factors greatly influence what species of lichens may occur in a particular region. Among these factors is nitrogen deposition in the form of ammonia as a result of feedlot operations, which may be manifested by an increase in bark pH. Epiphytic lichens on trees located in close proximity to medium and large-scale feedlot operations in Eastern Nebraska were analyzed for bark pH levels, species composition and species abundance, then compared to trees located at a greater distance from feedlot operations. Five sites were selected based on the presence of trees and accessibility. Ten trees from each site were selected …

Estimating Willingness To Pay Using A Polychotomous Choice Function: An Application To Pork Products With Environmental Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, Douglas J. Miller, James B. Kliebenstein Aug 2006

Estimating Willingness To Pay Using A Polychotomous Choice Function: An Application To Pork Products With Environmental Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, Douglas J. Miller, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

Bid data from a Vickrey auction for pork chops with embedded environmental attributes were analyzed. It was found that approximately 62% of the participants had a positive WTP for the most "environmentally friendly" package of pork. Thirty percent of the participants had no WTP, and 8% had a negative WTP. A polychotomous choice model was used to accommodate data having an anchoring point within the distribution of the data. Standard variables found in the WTP literature coupled with this model were used to predict participants who were premium payers and non-premium payers using an estimated ordered probit equation.

Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting Algorithm Pocket Guide, Laurie Senn Aug 2006

Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting Algorithm Pocket Guide, Laurie Senn

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONY) remain common complications following surgery and their causes and treatments are complex. Despite much research and advances in treatment, PONY is present as often as 25-30% following all surgical cases. Patients have identified avoidance of nausea and vomiting, avoidance of gagging on endotracheal tube, and control of postoperative pain as their top priorities following surgery. Certain patient characteristics, type of surgery performed, and some anesthetic medications have been implicated in increasing the risk of developing PONY. Patients at high risk for developing PONY are frequently female, have a history of PONY or motion sickness, …

Disturbance Facilitates Invasion: The Effects Are Stronger Abroad Than At Home, José L. Hierro, Diego Villarreal, Özkan Eren, Jon M. Graham, Ragan M. Callaway Aug 2006

Disturbance Facilitates Invasion: The Effects Are Stronger Abroad Than At Home, José L. Hierro, Diego Villarreal, Özkan Eren, Jon M. Graham, Ragan M. Callaway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Disturbance is one of the most important factors promoting exotic invasion. However, if disturbance per se is sufficient to explain exotic success, then "invasion" abroad should not differ from "colonization" at home. Comparisons of the effects of disturbance on organisms in their native and introduced ranges are crucial to elucidate whether this is the case; however, such comparisons have not been conducted. We investigated the effects of disturbance on the success of Eurasian native Centaurea solstitialis in two invaded regions, California and Argentina, and one native region, Turkey, by conducting field experiments consisting of simulating different disturbances and adding locally …

How Transient Patches Affect Population Dynamics: The Case Of Hypoxia And Blue Crabs, Craig A. Aumann, Lisa A. Eby, William F. Fagan Aug 2006

How Transient Patches Affect Population Dynamics: The Case Of Hypoxia And Blue Crabs, Craig A. Aumann, Lisa A. Eby, William F. Fagan

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Transient low-oxygen patches may have important consequences for the population dynamics of estuarine species. We investigated whether these transient hypoxic patches altered population dynamics of the commercially important blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) and assessed two alternative hypotheses for the causal mechanism. One hypothesis is that temporary reductions in habitat due to hypoxia increase cannibalism. The second hypothesis is that crab population dynamics result from food limitation caused by hypoxia-induced mortality of the benthos. We developed a spatially explicit individual-based model of blue crabs in a hierarchical framework to connect the autoecology of crabs with the spatial and temporal dynamics of …

Magnetic Moment Softening And Domain Wall Resistance In Ni Nanowires, J. D. Burton, Renat F. Sabirianov, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Oleg N. Mryasov Aug 2006

Magnetic Moment Softening And Domain Wall Resistance In Ni Nanowires, J. D. Burton, Renat F. Sabirianov, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Oleg N. Mryasov

Physics Faculty Publications

We perform ab initio calculations of the electronic structure and conductance of atomic-size Ni nanowires with domain walls only a few atomic lattice constants wide. We show that the hybridization between noncollinear spin states leads to a reduction of the magnetic moments in the domain wall resulting in the enhancement of the domain wall resistance. Experimental studies of the magnetic moment softening may be feasible with modern techniques such as scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Min–Max Hyperellipsoidal Clustering For Anomaly Detection In Network Security, Suseela T. Sarasamma, Qiuming Zhu Aug 2006

Min–Max Hyperellipsoidal Clustering For Anomaly Detection In Network Security, Suseela T. Sarasamma, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A novel hyperellipsoidal clustering technique is presented for an intrusion-detection system in network security. Hyperellipsoidal clusters toward maximum intracluster similarity and minimum intercluster similarity are generated from training data sets. The novelty of the technique lies in the fact that the parameters needed to construct higher order data models in general multivariate Gaussian functions are incrementally derived from the data sets using accretive processes. The technique is implemented in a feedforward neural network that uses a Gaussian radial basis function as the model generator. An evaluation based on the inclusiveness and exclusiveness of samples with respect to specific criteria is …

Information Availability And Security Policy, Andrew P. Martin, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Information availability is a key element of information security. However, information availability has not been addressed with the same enthusiasm as confidentiality and integrity because availability is impacted by many variables which cannot easily be controlled. The principal goal of this research is to characterize information availability in detail and investigate how effective enterprise security policy can ensure availability.

Common-Mode Radiation Resulting From Hand-Assembled Cable Bundles On Automotive Platforms, Shishuang Sun, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke Aug 2006

Common-Mode Radiation Resulting From Hand-Assembled Cable Bundles On Automotive Platforms, Shishuang Sun, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A statistical cable harness model is developed to account for the random disturbance of the wire positions along hand-assembled bundles. The non-uniform random bundles are modeled as n-cascaded segments of uniform multi-conductor transmission line. At each section, all wire positions are disturbed with random numbers obeying a Gaussian distribution. In addition, a spline interpolation function is used to improve the smoothness of wires winding along the bundle. The common-mode current distribution along the bundle calculated with SPICE is injected into a full-wave tool, e.g., FDTD, as impressed current sources. Thus, the full-vehicle electromagnetic emissions from the automotive harness can …

Numerical Analysis Of Sandwiched Composite-Fss Structures, Rui Qiang, Ji Chen, Jingyu Huang, Marina Koledintseva, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Drewniak, Fan Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical technique to analyze shielding effectiveness of sandwiched FSS-composite structures is proposed. This technique is based on using a dispersive FDTD method in conjuncture with a novel periodic boundary condition to model sandwiched FSS-composite elements. Results show that by inserting single or multilayered FSS elements into composite materials, better shielding effectiveness can be achieved.

Microwave Reflectometry As A Novel Diagnostic Tool For Detection Of Skin Cancers, Pratik Mehta, Kundan Chand, Deepak Narayanswamy, Daryl G. Beetner, R. Zoughi, William V. Stoecker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

More than 1 000 000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States, and more than 10 000 people die from the disease. Methods such as visual inspection and dermoscopy are available for early detection of skin cancers, but improvement in accuracy is needed. This paper investigates the use of microwave reflectometry as a potential diagnostic tool for detection of skin cancers. Open-ended coaxial probes were used to measure microwave properties of skin. The influences of measurement parameters such as probe application pressure, power level, and variation in reflection properties of skin with location and hydration …

Signal Link-Path Characterization Up To 20 Ghz Based On A Stripline Structure, Jianmin Zhang, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke, Richard E. Dubroff, Zhiping Yang, Wheling Cheng, John C. Fisher, Sergio Camerlo Aug 2006

Signal Link-Path Characterization Up To 20 Ghz Based On A Stripline Structure, Jianmin Zhang, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke, Richard E. Dubroff, Zhiping Yang, Wheling Cheng, John C. Fisher, Sergio Camerlo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dielectric properties and losses are two critical issues in signal link-path characterization. To obtain the substrate dielectric properties for a planar transmission line, an analytical solution is derived and validated based on a stripline structure and measured scattering parameters with TRL de-embedding. The characterized dielectric property is used to evaluate dielectric loss and conductor loss. The total loss is thereby found from their summation. The calculated total loss is compared to the measured total loss, and the conductor loss and dielectric loss are then quantifiable. Since the conventional description using the loss tangent and dielectric constant to represent material properties …

An Alternative Target Density Function For Radar Imaging, Askin Demirkol, Levent Acar, Robert S. Woodley, Erol Emre Aug 2006

An Alternative Target Density Function For Radar Imaging, Askin Demirkol, Levent Acar, Robert S. Woodley, Erol Emre

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an alternative Target Density Function (TDF) is proposed to image the radar targets in a dense target environment. It is produced by wavelet theory considering a new range and angle plane different from the conventional methods. It is shown that Wavelet theory can be used as approach to imaging by active sensors by transmitting a waveform which is a kernel for this transform such as a window function. Although the imaging is obtained via the phased array radars, the problem associated with beamforming in linear phased array radar system is bypassed in this new algorithm.

Population Distribution And Variability Of Mucosal-Sheath Mass Of Calastoma Cinnabarium In The Cloud Forest Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2006, Cecilia Sorensen, Tanner Scrivens

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Comprising an entire kingdom to themselves, fungi have been poorly studied relative to their diversity and importance across ecosystems. Calastoma cinnabarium is one of these widely distributed but understudied mushrooms found throughout the Americas. The purpose of this study was to examine its elevational distribution at Monteverde, Costa Rica and adaptive value of its distinctive mucosal-sheath to investigate its possible role in moisture regulation. Population censuses were conducted along an elevational gradient through two life zones in the Monteverde Cloud Forest in parallel with a study determining mucosal-sheath mass to cap size diameter. Additionally, the adaptive value of mucosal-sheathing was …

The Effect Of Using A Video-Case Curriculum To Promote Preservice Teachers’ Development Of A Reflective Stance Towards Mathematics Teaching, Shari L. Stockero Aug 2006

The Effect Of Using A Video-Case Curriculum To Promote Preservice Teachers’ Development Of A Reflective Stance Towards Mathematics Teaching, Shari L. Stockero

Dissertations

This study investigates the effects of using a coherent video-case curriculum in a university methods course. In particular, three issues are addressed: (1) howthe use of a video-case curriculum affects the reflective stance of preservice teachers; (2) the extent to which a reflective stance developed while reflecting on other teachers' practice transfers to reflecting on one's own practice; and (3) how preservice teachers' reflective stance that is developed via sustained and focused reflection using a video-case curriculum compares to the reflective stance of peers who engaged in less sustained and focused reflection. Althoughvideo cases are increasingly being used in teacher …

This, in turn, helps to create a positive impact with respect to the retention of this student group within the programme. The second …

Variations On U-Shaped Learning, Lorenzo Carlucci, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Frank Stephen Aug 2006

Variations On U-Shaped Learning, Lorenzo Carlucci, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Frank Stephen

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The paper deals with the following problem: is returning to wrong conjectures necessary to achieve full power of algorithmic learning? Returning to wrong conjectures complements the paradigm of U-shaped learning when a learner returns to old correct conjectures. We explore our problem for classical models of learning in the limit from positive data: explanatory learning (when a learner stabilizes in the limit on a correct grammar) and behaviourally correct learning (when a learner stabilizes in the limit on a sequence of correct grammars representing the target concept). In both cases we show that returning to wrong conjectures is necessary to …

Myod Synergizes With The E-Protein Heb Beta To Induce Myogenic Differentiation, Maura H. Parker, Robert L.S. Perry, Melanie C. Fauteux, Charlotte A. Berkes, Michael A. Rudnicki

Biology Faculty Publications

The MyoD family of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors function as heterodimers with members of the E-protein family to induce myogenic gene activation. The E-protein HEB is alternatively spliced to generate alpha and beta isoforms. While the function of these molecules has been studied in other cell types, questions persist regarding the molecular functions of HEB proteins in skeletal muscle. Our data demonstrate that HEB alpha expression remains unchanged in both myoblasts and myotubes, whereas HEB beta is upregulated during the early phases of terminal differentiation. Upon induction of differentiation, a MyoD-HEB beta complex bound the E1 E-box of the myogenin …

Language Of Innovation: Alignment Of Boundary Objects, Humayun Rashid

Student Scholarship

The role of language in communication has been part of most social science and management disciplines for decades; but in the world of practice, large organizations still struggle with implementing major innovations or changes due to communication barriers between the diverse participants. The lack of acceptance and the challenges of change are especially characteristic of information technology-enabled business transformations that typically involve intense interactions between business executive/managers and information technology (IT) staff. When these diverse groups interact to achieve an over-arching company objective, communication becomes a major organizational challenge. During my discussions with executives over the years in the world …

Sliding Mode Control Of Robotics Systems Actuated By Pneumatic Muscles., Liang Yang 1975- Aug 2006

Sliding Mode Control Of Robotics Systems Actuated By Pneumatic Muscles., Liang Yang 1975-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with investigating robust approaches for the control of pneumatic muscle systems. Pneumatic muscle is a novel type of actuator. Besides having a high ratio of power to weight and flexible control of movement, it also exhibits many analogical behaviors to natural skeletal muscle, which makes them the ideal candidate for applications of anthropomorphic robotic systems. In this dissertation, a new phenomenological model of pneumatic muscle developed in the Human Sensory Feedback Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base is investigated. The closed loop stability of a one-link planar arm actuated by two pneumatic muscles using linear …

The Application Of Maxwell Elements For Modeling, Identification And Analysis Of Passive And Semi-Active Vibration Systems., Jie Zhang 1959-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic analysis and parameter identification of a single mass elastomeric isolation system represented by Maxwell model is examined using both analytical and experimental approaches in this dissertation. Influences that the stiffness and damping values of the Maxwell element have on natural frequency, damping ratio and frequency response are uncovered and three unique categories of Maxwell-type elements are defined. It is revealed through analytical examples that Maxwell models consisting of two Maxwell elements can accurately replicate the dynamic behavior of Maxwell systems having two or more Maxwell elements. Two parameter identification methods are developed for identifying Maxwell models from measured frequency …
