The Application Of Maxwell Elements For Modeling, Identification And Analysis Of Passive And Semi-Active Vibration Systems., Jie Zhang 1959-
The Application Of Maxwell Elements For Modeling, Identification And Analysis Of Passive And Semi-Active Vibration Systems., Jie Zhang 1959-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dynamic analysis and parameter identification of a single mass elastomeric isolation system represented by Maxwell model is examined using both analytical and experimental approaches in this dissertation. Influences that the stiffness and damping values of the Maxwell element have on natural frequency, damping ratio and frequency response are uncovered and three unique categories of Maxwell-type elements are defined. It is revealed through analytical examples that Maxwell models consisting of two Maxwell elements can accurately replicate the dynamic behavior of Maxwell systems having two or more Maxwell elements. Two parameter identification methods are developed for identifying Maxwell models from measured frequency …
Chainability And Hemmingsen's Theorem, Paul Bankston
Chainability And Hemmingsen's Theorem, Paul Bankston
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
On the surface, the definitions of chainability and Lebesgue covering dimension ⩽1 are quite similar as covering properties. Using the ultracoproduct construction for compact Hausdorff spaces, we explore the assertion that the similarity is only skin deep. In the case of dimension, there is a theorem of E. Hemmingsen that gives us a first-order lattice-theoretic characterization. We show that no such characterization is possible for chainability, by proving that if κ is any infinite cardinal and AA is a lattice base for a nondegenerate continuum, then AA is elementarily equivalent to a lattice base for a continuum Y …

FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) guidelines do not currently exist for conducting and incorporating tsunami hazard assessments that reflect the substantial advances in tsunami research achieved in the last two decades; this conclusion is the result of two FEMA-sponsored workshops and the associated Tsunami Focused Study (Chowdhury et al., 2005). Therefore, as part of FEMA's Map Modernization Program, a Tsunami Pilot Study was carried out in the Seaside/Gearhart, Oregon, area to develop an improved Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessment (PTHA) methodology and to provide recommendations for improved tsunami hazard assessment guidelines. The Seaside area was chosen because it is typical …
Evaluation And Performance Prediction Of Multimodal Biometric Systems, Nevena Samoska
Evaluation And Performance Prediction Of Multimodal Biometric Systems, Nevena Samoska
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multibiometric systems fuse the evidence presented by different biometric sources in order to improve the matching accuracy of a biometric system. In such systems, information fusion can be performed at different levels; however, integration at the matching score level is the most commonly used approach due to the tradeoff between information content and accessibility. This work develops a tool in order to analyze the impact of various normalization schemes on the matching performance of score-level fusion algorithms. The tool permits the systematic evaluation of different fusion rules after employing normalizing and mapping the match scores of different modalities into a …
A New Reduced Order Model For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Suryanarayana Raju Pakalapati
A New Reduced Order Model For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Suryanarayana Raju Pakalapati
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fuel cells are one of the promising eco-friendly and efficient electricity generators for future energy infrastructure. Rigorous research has been underway for over a decade to develop fuel cell technology as a viable alternative to the conventional energy sources. Numerical modeling has played a prominent role in such research endeavors. Detailed multi-dimensional models reveal important information regarding the performance of a fuel cell but they are computationally intensive. Relatively simple zero- and one-dimensional models on the other hand average out the details that could be critical. The topic of this dissertation is a new strategy for modeling fuel cells which …
Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics Of Redox Centers Attached To Self -Assembled Monolayers On Electrodes, Nicholas Madhiri
Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics Of Redox Centers Attached To Self -Assembled Monolayers On Electrodes, Nicholas Madhiri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions play an important role in many biochemical systems and have been focus of great interest recently. These reactions can be represented by a general equation: Ox + ne - + hH+ ↔ Red.;Traditionally, these reactions have been studied by applying predictions from the stepwise model developed by E. Laviron in the early 1980s. This model is based upon treating the proton transfer step and electron transfer step as discrete steps. Proton transfer is assumed to be at equilibrium under all conditions. However, there is also evidence suggesting a concerted mechanism in which the electron and …
Measuring Chemotaxis In Borrelia Burgdorferi The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Richard Gerrit Bakker
Measuring Chemotaxis In Borrelia Burgdorferi The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Richard Gerrit Bakker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Borrelia burgdorferi is the spirochete causative agent of Lyme disease. The chemotaxis and motility systems of these bacteria are far less well described than that of Escherichia coli or Salmonella enterica. This dissertation explores the role of the CheA proteins in the chemotactic response and describes the first defined attractants for B. burgdorferi.;In order to test hypotheses, we developed or optimized three protocols. To characterize the motion of cells, two motion tracking systems were optimized. The Hobson BacTracker allowed for tracking cell motions in real time. This hardware/software chimera, while powerful for the specific application, utilizes a cumbersome interface. Therefore, …
Ieepa's Override Authority: Potential For A Violation Of The Geneva Conventions' Right To Access For Humanitarian Organizations?, Jennifer R. White
Ieepa's Override Authority: Potential For A Violation Of The Geneva Conventions' Right To Access For Humanitarian Organizations?, Jennifer R. White
Michigan Law Review
This Note argues that, should the President exercise his override authority to prohibit or restrict the donation of humanitarian articles during an armed conflict involving the United States, the resulting prohibition or restriction would cause the United States to violate its obligations under the Conventions. This Note does not assert that the United States should not have the ability to put in place controls to prevent terrorists from benefiting from donations of funds and other humanitarian items; instead, it asserts that domestic law must tread as lightly and narrowly as possible where a widely accepted multilateral treaty exists and that …
Water Solubility Characteristics Of Hydrophobically Modified Polyethyleneimines, Jennifer N. Williams
Water Solubility Characteristics Of Hydrophobically Modified Polyethyleneimines, Jennifer N. Williams
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Commercially available polyethyleneimines varying in molecular weights and viscosities were synthetically modified in order to increase their hydrophobicity when dissolved in water. Used as additives for inkjet industry inks, these polymers have been designed to promote interaction between formulated inks and paper, while increasing the water-fastness of these water-soluble inks once they are dried on bond paper. Waterfastness, the ability of an ink to maintain print integrity once it becomes wet, as well as optical density, solubility, pH, molecular weight, polydispersity and viscosity are amongst the characteristics analyzed. The modifications of these polyethyleneimines (PEis) with alkyl bromides and alkyl epoxides …

An Experimental Study On U-Commerce Adoption: The Impact Of Personalization And Privacy Concerns, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
U-commerce represents “anytime, anywhere” commerce, which is believed to be the ultimate form of commerce. Ucommerce can provide a high level of personalization, which can bring additional benefits and values to customers. However, despite these promises and potential benefits, customers’ privacy is a major concern and obstacle to the adoption of ucommerce. As customers’ intention to adopt u-commerce is based on the aggregate effect of perceived benefits and risk exposure (e.g., privacy concerns), this research examines how personalization and context can impact on customers’ perceived benefits and privacy concerns, and how this aggregated effect in turn affects u-commerce adoption intention. …

A Swarm-Based Model For Increasing Impulse Shopping In Supermarkets, Zeehan-Ul-Hassan Usmani
A Swarm-Based Model For Increasing Impulse Shopping In Supermarkets, Zeehan-Ul-Hassan Usmani
Theses and Dissertations
In today's supermarket multi-billion dollar industry, impulse shopping accounts for 2 out of 3 purchases. The phenomenon is so prominent that some consider high levels of it to be a disorder in the same group as Pyromania (the impulse to burn things) and Kleptomania (the impulse to steal). Despite the current situation, most retail stores attempt to benefit from the fact that people are impulsive in nature as a way to maximize their profits. In order to improve on current levels of sales, retail stores and supermarkets need to look at out-of-the-box to solutions that may, at first, not appear …

The Effect Of Reservoir Characteristics On Methane Production From Hydrate Bearing Formations, Sachin Gandra
The Effect Of Reservoir Characteristics On Methane Production From Hydrate Bearing Formations, Sachin Gandra
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Demand for natural gas is ever increasing and according to DOE [1], by 2040, 10 Tcf/yr of gas has to be imported. Interest in the potentially large deposits of natural gas hydrates and hydrate capped gas reservoirs is increasing because a conservative estimate of gas hydrate reserve potential of US exclusive economic zone is 200,000 Tcf [2, 3]. If 1% of this were recovered, that would be greater than the cumulative gas reserves of conventional gas sources (1000-1500 Tcf). Even 1% production of this recovered gas per year would make USA the exporter of gas.;Gas hydrates are solid, crystalline ice …

Optical-Based Atr Algorithms For Applications In Swarmed Uavs, Vasavi Rangammagari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Swarmed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) technology are becoming an important element of electronic warfare. The advantages of UAVs over piloted vehicles have increased the need to develop robust and reliable ATR algorithms. Various issues like changing weather, camouflage, low contrast and resolution, clutter, inadequate databases place a limit on the performance capabilities of a typical ATR algorithm. In an effort to deal with these issues, a correlation-based algorithm is proposed in this thesis. This algorithm calculates the correlation between the input image and a target template which is created by projecting a 3-D model from …
Resistance To Change Of Responding To Stimulus Relations, Marta Leon
Resistance To Change Of Responding To Stimulus Relations, Marta Leon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three experiments assessed resistance to change of response accuracy under different reinforcement rates. Fifteen college students responded to a matching-to-sample task, with one set of baseline conditional relations reinforced at a rich rate and another set reinforced at a lean rate. In two experiments, resistance to change was assessed by presenting tests for emergent equivalence relations and then reversing some of the baseline conditional discriminations and examining changes in the equivalence classes after the reversal; the experiments differed in the presence or absence of overtraining for the rich condition. The third experiment assessed resistance to change by testing for emergent …

Development Of Microfluidic Devices For Proteomics, Trust T. Razunguzwa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We have developed functional components for a comprehensive microfluidic system for proteomic analyses. This dissertation presents development of an electroomsotic pump for delivery of fluids to other microfluidic channels, a hydrodynamic flow restrictor for combining electrokinetic and hydrodynamic flow on a microfluidic chip-ESI-MS interface, and surface coatings to prevent analyte adsorption to microfluidic channels. A microfluidic chip ESI-MS interface with a novel voltage switching component is also developed for the separation of negative analytes at high pH, with positive ion mode ESI-MS detection of the analyte, converted to positive ions via a make-up solution induced pH change.

A Component-Based Approach To Verification And Validation Of Formal Software Models, Dejan Desovski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Formal methods for verification of software systems often face the problem of state explosion and complexity. We present a divide and conquer methodology that leads to component based verification and analysis of formal requirements specifications expressed using Software Cost Reduction (SCR) models. The proposed methodology has the following steps: model partitioning, partition verification (either by model checking or testing) and composition of verification results.;We define a novel decomposition methodology for SCR specifications based on min-cut graph algorithms. The methodology identifies components in given SCR specifications and automates related abstraction methods. It also provides guidance on how to perform verification and …

Study Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Tablet Movement In A Rotating Drum Using Discrete Element Modeling (Dem) Method, Yongxin Song
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Particle shape is a very important factor affecting the accuracy of discrete element modeling (DEM) simulations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine its effect on the dynamic behavior of tablet movement in a rotating drum. First, the shape of typical standard round tablets was represented using the intersection of three convex spherical surfaces. Contact algorithms for Tablet-Flat Surface, Tablet-Curved Surface and Tablet-Tablet were developed based on the geometry of this representation of the tablets' shape. Good agreement was obtained between the simulation results for the collision of two tablets and those obtained from experiments. In addition, simulation …

Development Of Predictive Nox Model For On -Road Heavy -Duty Diesel Engines, Mohan Krishnamurthy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Emissions models currently employed by EPA and CARB do not account for the variations in engine operation and their effect on emissions. Alternatively, this study, demonstrates the feasibility of using Engine Control Module (ECM) broadcast parameters such as Engine Speed, Engine Torque, Injection Timing, Fueling Rate, Manifold Air Temperature, Manifold Air Pressure, Coolant Temperature and Oil Temperature as inputs to in order to predict engine-out exhaust NO x emissions. These parameters were obtained when the engine operates in the Not-to-Exceed (NTE) zone, (which is defined by 40 CFR §86.1370-2007) for a continuous time period of at least 30s in length.;This …

Cold Climate In The Eastern Australian Mid- To Late Permian May Reflect Cold Upwelling Waters, Andrew T. Jones, Tracy D. Frank, Christopher R. Fielding
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
A suite of ice-rafted dropstones and glendonites throughout the Permian succession of eastern Australia indicates the cold climate associated with the late Paleozoic ice age persisted longest in this part of Gondwana. Paradoxically, these cold climate indicators are preserved in transgressive and highstand facies and formed at mid to high latitudes at a time when paleofloral and sedimentological data suggest equable onshore environments during the intervening lowstands and temperate conditions at the pole. These apparent inconsistencies suggest that eastern Australia was anomalously cold in the context of post-Sakmarian Gondwanan climates, and the distribution of sedimentary indicators could indicate localized cooling …

In this paper we report results on the synthesis and magnetic properties of L10 FePt nanocomposite films. Three fabrication methods have been developed to produce high-anisotropy FePt films: non-epitaxial growth of (0 0 1)-oriented FePt:X (X=Ag, C) composite films that might be used for perpendicular media; monodispersed FePt(CFx) core–shell nanocluster-assembled films grown with a gas-aggregation technique and having uniform cluster size and narrow size distribution; and template-mediated self-assembled FePt clusters prepared with chemical synthesis by a hydrogen reduction technique, which has a high potential for controlling both cluster size and orientation. The magnetic properties are controllable through …

Recent dialogues in geography and the social sciences have reminded researchers of the extent to which academic and policy knowledges are socially and spatially embedded-that is, they circulate through formal and informal systems of publishing, exchange, commodification and cultural influence. Academic and policy knowledges are, in short, very much a part of the creative economy. In light of this, our paper surveys knowledges of the creative economy itself, as reflected in a geography of industry reports and government policy statements in selected Asian countries. Using a post-positivist framework adapted from diffusion theory, we critically interpret the circulation, mutation and adaptation …

A nationally representative sample of respondents estimated their fatality risks from four types of natural disasters, and indicated whether they favored governmental disaster relief. For all hazards, including auto accident risks, most respondents assessed their risks as being below average, with one-third assessing them as average. Individuals from high-risk states, or with experience with disasters, estimate risks higher, though by less than reasonable calculations require. Four-fifths of our respondents favor government relief for disaster victims, but only one-third do for victims in high-risk areas. Individuals who perceive themselves at higher risk are more supportive of government assistance.

Incentive Awards To Class Action Plaintiffs: An Empirical Study, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Incentive awards to representative plaintiffs in class actions have been the focus of recent law reform efforts and have generated inconsistent case law. But little is known about such awards. This study of 374 opinions from 1993 to 2002 finds that awards were granted in about 28 percent of settled class actions. The rate of awards varied by case category as follows: consumer credit actions 59 percent, employment discrimination cases 46 percent, antitrust cases 35 percent, securities cases 24 percent (before the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 limited awards), and corporate and mass tort actions less than 10 …
