Context Aware Energy Conservation In Pervasive Computing Environments, Prathiba Joseph

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Extending battery lifetime is one of the most critical and challenging problems in mobile systems. When the mobile device sounds a low battery alarm, the user is given an ultimatum to quickly find a power source or suspend work. The greatest utility of mobile devices is their ability to be used anywhere, and at anytime. But power limitations of these devices seem to hinder this goal. The ever-growing needs of mobile users for increased lifetime of wireless devices imply that emerging wireless systems must be more energy-efficient than ever before. Cyber foraging or remote resource exploitation may be an efficient …

Evaluating Indexing And Routing Schemes For Spatial Queries In Sensor Networks, Raja Rajeshwari Anugula Aug 2006

Evaluating Indexing And Routing Schemes For Spatial Queries In Sensor Networks, Raja Rajeshwari Anugula

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Recent advances in low-power sensing devices coupled with widespread availability of wireless ad-hoc networks, has fueled the development of sensor networks. These senor networks have various applications such as to monitor conditions at different locations (temperature, pressure, rainfall, vibrations etc.,), tracking of objects and so on. Each device is equipped with an energy source (usually with a battery), memory, CPU and communication bandwidth, which is severely constrained. Hence each sensor network is comprised of hardware for sensing, software for communication and computational algorithms. Spatial queries are commonly applied to sensor network, for example: "Find the highest temperature sensed in a …

An Application Of Parallel And Distributed Computing Methods To Approximate Pattern Matching Of Genetic Regulatory Motifs, Tushar Kumar Jayantilal

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Bioinformatics is a relatively new scientific field concerned with providing computational means and support to research in molecular biology and genetics. It draws from many different areas of computer science, including database theory, algorithm design and analysis, and artificial intelligence, to name just a few. In many applications, such as one described in this thesis, a biologist is interested in locating a particular pattern, or sequence motif, in a given string or set of strings over the four-letter DNA alphabet. In this thesis we present an efficient approach to locating promoter and other regulatory sequences in entire genomes or in …

Data from the National Pork Producers Council Maternal Line National Genetic Evaluation Program were used to compare longevity of sows from 6 commercial genetic lines and to estimate the phenotypic associations of sow longevity with gilt backfat thickness, ADG, age at first farrowing, litter size at first farrowing, litter weight at first farrowing, average feed intake during lactation, and average backfat loss during lactation. The lines evaluated were American Diamond Genetics, Danbred North America, Dekalb-Monsanto DK44, Dekalb-Monsanto GPK347, Newsham Hybrids, and National Swine Registry. The data set contained information from 3,251 gilts, of which 17% had censored longevity records (sows …

Small Ramsey Numbers, Stanislaw Radziszowski Aug 2006

Small Ramsey Numbers, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

We present data which, to the best of our knowledge, includes all known nontrivial values and bounds for specific graph, hypergraph and multicolor Ramsey numbers, where the avoided graphs are complete or complete without one edge. Many results pertaining to other more studied cases are also presented. We give references to all cited bounds and values, as well as to previous similar compilations. We do not attempt complete coverage of asymptotic behavior of Ramsey numbers, but concentrate on their specific values.

Articles

We review some properties of transverse disks and use symbolic dynamics to determine rotation vectors from the return map to a transverse disk. We also prove connections between the symbolic dynamics and Nielson equivalence of orbits.

Influences Of Watershed Urban Development On Habitat Heterogeneity And Native Fish Diversity In A Ridge And Valley Stream In Southeastern Tennessee, Nicholas B. Cookson Aug 2006

Influences Of Watershed Urban Development On Habitat Heterogeneity And Native Fish Diversity In A Ridge And Valley Stream In Southeastern Tennessee, Nicholas B. Cookson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The present study examined relationships of landscape features with instream environmental conditions and fish assemblage attributes in a third-order Ridge and Valley stream in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area. Stream water quality, habitat, and fish assemblages were sampled in May-June 2005 at seven sites (drainage areas <17 km2) in the Mountain Creek system (Tennessee River drainage). Watershed urban land use (predominantly residential) ranged from 1.62 % to 18.97 % and housing density from 49 housing units/km2 to 72 housing units/km2. Natural riparian land cover at the sites ranged from 26.9 % to 53.1 %. A total of22 species offish and 3,686 individuals was found at the seven sites. Native species richness per drainage area ranged from 0.12 species/km2 to 1.15 species/km2 at the individual sites. Species evenness ranged from 0.56 to 0.79. Index of biotic integrity ratings varied from poor to good. Watershed urban land use was negatively correlated with species richness, species evenness, variation in stream shape, and variation in current velocity. Housing density in the watershed was positively correlated with sediment depth and negatively correlated with species richness, substrate diversity, and variation in stream shape. Riparian natural cover was positively correlated with variation in current velocity. Results of this study emphasize the negative influence of watershed residential land use on stream habitat heterogeneity and native fish diversity.

The Effects Of No Child Left Behind Act On North Dakota Career And Technical Education Programs, Jerome Alden Gunderson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to research the effects of No Child Left Behind legislation on the enrollment of Career and Technical Education programs in the state of North Dakota. In 2001, the US Congress passed the “No Child Left Behind’' legislation. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has initiated much discussion and forced changes to many public school K-12 programs. The legislation was written specifically to address educational issues related to core academic educational programs such as math, English, science, and social studies.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs were not addressed in the NCLB legislation, but …

Common Learning, Martin W. Cripps, Jeffrey C. Ely, George J. Mailath, Larry Samuelson Aug 2006

Common Learning, Martin W. Cripps, Jeffrey C. Ely, George J. Mailath, Larry Samuelson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Consider two agents who learn the value of an unknown parameter by observing a sequence of private signals. The signals are independent and identically distributed across time but not necessarily across agents. We show that that when each agent’s signal space is finite, the agents will commonly learn its value, i.e., that the true value of the parameter will become approximate common-knowledge. In contrast, if the agents’ observations come from a countably infinite signal space, then this contraction mapping property fails. We show by example that common learning can fail in this case.

A Compact Digitally Controlled Fuel Cell/Battery Hybrid Power Source, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal Aug 2006

A Compact Digitally Controlled Fuel Cell/Battery Hybrid Power Source, Zhenhua Jiang, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

A compact digitally controlled fuel cell/battery hybrid power source is presented in this paper. The hybrid power source composed of fuel cells and batteries provides a much higher peak power than each component alone while preserving high energy density, which is important and desirable for many modern electronic devices, through an appropriately controlled dc/dc power converter that handles the power flow shared by the fuel cell and the battery. Rather than being controlled to serve only as a voltage or current regulator, the power converter is regulated to balance the power flow to satisfy the load requirements while ensuring the …

Pareto Improving Taxes, John Geanakoplos, Heracles M. Polemarchakis Aug 2006

Pareto Improving Taxes, John Geanakoplos, Heracles M. Polemarchakis

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We show that in almost every economy with separable externalities, every competitive equilibrium can be Pareto improved by a package of anonymous commodity taxes that cause prices to adjust and markets to reclear at different levels of individual consumption. The argument can be extended to economies with strategic interactions, incomplete asset markets or asymmetric information. This constrained suboptimality of competitive allocations might provide a rationale for economic policy in economies with externalities.

Viscoelastic Flow In Rotating Curved Pipes, Yitung Chen, Huajun Chen, Jinsuo Zhang, Benzhao Zhang Aug 2006

Viscoelastic Flow In Rotating Curved Pipes, Yitung Chen, Huajun Chen, Jinsuo Zhang, Benzhao Zhang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Fully developed viscoelastic flows in rotating curved pipes with circular cross section are investigated theoretically and numerically employing the Oldroyd-B fluid model. Based on Dean’s approximation, a perturbation solution up to the secondary order is obtained. The governing equations are also solved numerically by the finite volume method. The theoretical and numerical solutions agree with each other very well. The results indicate that the rotation, as well as the curvature and elasticity, plays an important role in affecting the friction factor, the secondary flow pattern and intensity. The co-rotation enhances effects of curvature and elasticity on the secondary flow. For …

Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor Aug 2006

Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor

Articles

The following paper discusses the implications of government policy for widening access and participation in third level institutes. The increase in ‘non-traditional’ students has been widely recognised on an international scale; however, some issues of inequality still exist. The ‘struggles’ associated with widening participation and the creation of a ‘new’ student type are discussed, with particular reference to chemistry education. A change is needed with regard to the pedagogical approach taken by staff in order to cater for a diverse student body comprising a broad range of learner types, and this must be supported both at departmental and institutional levels. …

Integrating Software Into Pra: A Software-Related Failure Mode Taxonomy, Bin Li, Ming Li, Ken Chen, Carol Smidts

Faculty Publications

Probabilistic risk assessment is a methodology to assess the probability of failure or success of a mission. Results provided by the risk assessment methodology are used to make decisions concerning choice of upgrades, scheduling of maintenance, decision to launch, etc. However, current PRA neglects the contribution of software to the risk of failure of the mission. Our research has developed a methodology to account for the impact of software to system failure. This article focuses on an element of the approach: a comprehensive taxonomy of software-related failure modes. Application of the taxonomy is discussed in this article. A validation of …

Reciprocity For Multirestricted Stirling Numbers, Ji Young Choi, Ling Long, Siu Hung Ng, Jonathan Smith Aug 2006

Reciprocity For Multirestricted Stirling Numbers, Ji Young Choi, Ling Long, Siu Hung Ng, Jonathan Smith

Faculty Publications

Multirestricted Stirling numbers of the second kind count the number of partitions of a given set into a given number of parts, each part being restricted to at most a fixed number of elements. Multirestricted numbers of the first kind are then defined as elements of the matrix inverse to the matrix of corresponding multirestricted numbers of the second kind. The anomalous sign behavior of these latter numbers makes them impervious to combinatorial analysis. In answer to a conjecture that has remained open for several years, we derive a reciprocity law for multirestricted Stirling numbers using algebraic techniques based on …

Effective Hamiltonians In Quantum Physics: Resonances And Geometric Phase, A. R.P. Rau, D. Uskov

Faculty Publications

Effective Hamiltonians are often used in quantum physics, both in time-dependent and time-independent contexts. Analogies are drawn between the two usages, the discussion framed particularly for the geometric phase of a time-dependent Hamiltonian and for resonances as stationary states of a time-independent Hamiltonian. © 2006 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

New Explorations In Culture And Crime: Definitions, Theory, Method, Kenneth B. Nunn Aug 2006

New Explorations In Culture And Crime: Definitions, Theory, Method, Kenneth B. Nunn

UF Law Faculty Publications

Culture affects criminal law in at least two key ways. First, culture and crime symbiotically define each other. Second, culture helps explain which courtroom narratives will be successful, and which will not. Culture influences who will be arrested, charged, convicted, and what sentence they will receive. Indeed, the invisible hand of culture drives the process of criminalization and helps to determine which acts we will sanction through criminal statutes.

Prediction Markets For Corporate Governance, Michael Abramowicz, M. Todd Henderson Aug 2006

Prediction Markets For Corporate Governance, Michael Abramowicz, M. Todd Henderson

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Building on the success of prediction markets at forecasting political elections and other matters of public interest, firms have made increasing use of prediction markets to help make business decisions. This Article explores the implications of prediction markets for corporate governance. Prediction markets can increase the flow of information, encourage truth telling by internal and external firm monitors, and create incentives for agents to act in the interest of their principals. The markets can thus serve as potentially efficient alternatives to other approaches to providing information, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act’s internal controls provisions. Prediction markets can also produce an …

Collaborative Image Retrieval Via Regularized Metric Learning, Luo Si, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Aug 2006

Collaborative Image Retrieval Via Regularized Metric Learning, Luo Si, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In content-based image retrieval (CBIR), relevant images are identified based on their similarities to query images. Most CBIR algorithms are hindered by the semantic gap between the low-level image features used for computing image similarity and the high-level semantic concepts conveyed in images. One way to reduce the semantic gap is to utilize the log data of users' feedback that has been collected by CBIR systems in history, which is also called “collaborative image retrieval.” In this paper, we present a novel metric learning approach, named “regularized metric learning,” for collaborative image retrieval, which learns a distance metric by exploring …
