Mansfield Ct: Planning A New Village Center, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer Aug 2006

Mansfield Ct: Planning A New Village Center, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer

Planning

The case follows the development of a plan for a new village center in Storrs, the central village of Mansfield, Connecticut. A process that was transparent and inclusive of the community members yielded a plan that gained the approval of the Town, the landowner (the University of Connecticut), and the citizenry. The process relied on the mending of fences, the leadership of key participants, and an innovative strategy that included development of a nonprofit corporation and creative use of grant money. While zoning changes are still in the works, the first stage of building goes forward.

Can We Have Superconvergent Gradient Recovery Under Adaptive Meshes?, Haijun Wu, Zhimin Zhang Aug 2006

Can We Have Superconvergent Gradient Recovery Under Adaptive Meshes?, Haijun Wu, Zhimin Zhang

Mathematics Research Reports

We study adaptive finite element methods for elliptic problems with domain corner singularities. Our model problem is the two dimensional Poisson equation. Results of this paper are two folds. First, we prove that there exists an adaptive mesh (gauged by a discrete mesh density function) under which the recovered.gradient by the Polynomial Preserving Recovery (PPR) is superconvergent. Secondly, we demonstrate by numerical examples that an adaptive procedure with a posteriori error estimator based on PPR does produce adaptive meshes satisfy our mesh density assumption, and the recovered gradient by PPR is indeed supercoveregent in the adaptive process.

Nested Markov Compliance Class Model In The Presence Of Time-Varying Noncompliance, Julia Y. Lin, Thomas R. Tenhave, Michael R. Elliott Aug 2006

Nested Markov Compliance Class Model In The Presence Of Time-Varying Noncompliance, Julia Y. Lin, Thomas R. Tenhave, Michael R. Elliott

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

We consider a Markov structure for partially unobserved time-varying compliance classes in the Imbens-Rubin (1997) compliance model framework. The context is a longitudinal randomized intervention study where subjects are randomized once at baseline, outcomes and patient adherence are measured at multiple follow-ups, and patient adherence to their randomized treatment could vary over time. We propose a nested latent compliance class model where we use time-invariant subject-specific compliance principal strata to summarize longtudinal trends of subject-specific time-varying compliance patterns. The principal strata are formed using Markov models that related current compliance behavior to compliance history. Treatment effects are estimated as intent-to …

Nash Equilibria In Cauchy-Random Zero-Sum And Coordination Matrix Games, David P. Roberts Aug 2006

Nash Equilibria In Cauchy-Random Zero-Sum And Coordination Matrix Games, David P. Roberts

Mathematics Publications

We consider zero-sum games (A, − A) and coordination games (A,A), where A is an m-by-n matrix with entries chosen independently with respect to the Cauchy distribution. In each case, we give an exact formula for the expected number of Nash equilibria with a given support size and payoffs in a given range, and also asymptotic simplications for matrices of a fixed shape and increasing size. We carefully compare our results with recent results of McLennan and Berg on Gaussian random bimatrix games (A,B), and describe how …

South Kingstown Ri: New Zoning For An Historic Mill, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer Aug 2006

South Kingstown Ri: New Zoning For An Historic Mill, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer

Planning

The village of Peace Dale in the town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, developed around several mills that commenced operations in the 1800s. One mill, known as the Palisades, is still partially active and in excellent condition, but much of its square footage is unutilized. A citizens’ group of artists and business people joined with the mill owners and the town of South Kingstown to develop new zoning regulations to make more flexible the permitted uses for the mill site. The proposed zoning will allow the mill complex to feature a mix of retail, residential, and manufacturing uses, while preserving …

Augusta Me: The New Bridge Begets A New Planned Neighborhood, Molly Pulsifer, Richard Barringer Aug 2006

Augusta Me: The New Bridge Begets A New Planned Neighborhood, Molly Pulsifer, Richard Barringer

Planning

Construction of a new Third Bridge over the Kennebec River in Augusta offered the prospect of a new and handsome gateway to the city. Further, the resulting change in traffic patterns offered the City the chance to plan for a pattern of development quite different from what the city had experienced for the past half-century. The case study describes the planning and construction of the new bridge and corridors that re-routed traffic out of Augusta’s downtown and older neighborhoods, and created the opportunity for planned development adjacent to the corridor created by the new bridge. It goes on to describe …

Research On Synthetic Rope And Its Future In Timber Harvesting, Joel N. Hartter, Jared Leonard, John Garland, Steve Pilkerton Aug 2006

Research On Synthetic Rope And Its Future In Timber Harvesting, Joel N. Hartter, Jared Leonard, John Garland, Steve Pilkerton

Geography

Steel wire rope is used for many logging applications. It has served the industry well in terms of strength, durability, and longevity. However, steel wire rope is difficult to use because it is stiff, heavy, and unyielding. These characteristics can lead to fatigue and exhaustion, and may contribute to worker injuries. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene synthetic rope has the potential to replace steel wire rope for selected logging applications. Research shows ergonomic gains and other operational effectiveness with its use. This paper presents research results, potentials, and issues in improving economic and ergonomic performance of ground-based and cable logging. Potential …

The Met School is a high school where personalization, interest-based learning, exhibitions, real-life experiences and parent communication are their main focuses. This in-service presentation focuses on ways to make a classroom more personalized, how to manage a classroom where each student is doing a project of his or her own interest, how to prepare students to do a quarterly exhibition and the importance of communication among students, …

Differentiated Teacher Training For Differentiated Instruction, Kristi Steele Aug 2006

Differentiated Teacher Training For Differentiated Instruction, Kristi Steele

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Gifted, bright, unusual, struggling, and special education students are all intermixed in classrooms today. As a result, teachers are expected to differentiate their instruction to meet the varying needs of these students. Unfortunately, the training teachers receive is often inadequate. Experienced and inexperienced teachers have different needs. In this project, the author attempted to solve this problem by designing a staff development workshop that is broken into two sections. The first section is to discuss the reasoning behind differentiated instruction. The second section is for all teachers. This section examines how differentiated instruction stems from a clear purpose of instruction. …

Strategies To Enhance Achievement For Boys, Susan Frick Aug 2006

Strategies To Enhance Achievement For Boys, Susan Frick

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Strategies to Enhance Achievement for Boys Gurian (1996) reported that brain research shows there are definite differences between the ways that boys' and girls' brains work. This applied project identifies some of the reasons why boys underachieve in school and includes strategies to assist and facilitate success in school; thereby, building responsible and confident adults. Effective strategies were combined in the guide book to enhance the way educators teach boys in school. The strategies are effective for boys at the elementary school level.

Investigation Of Negative Refractive Index In Reciprocal Chiral Materials, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Partha P. Banerjee, Pradeep R. Anugula Aug 2006

Investigation Of Negative Refractive Index In Reciprocal Chiral Materials, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Partha P. Banerjee, Pradeep R. Anugula

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is well known that there exist both natural materials (such as milk or sugar solution) possessing chiral (or handed) properties, as well as an increasing list of man-made materials (such as sodium bromate) that exhibit chirality. One of the principal properties of chirality is that light of any arbitrary polarization, when propagating through a chiral material, splits up into two circular polarizations propagating in different directions. In the past decade or longer, researchers have investigated electromagnetic transverse (plane) wave propagation across a non-chiral/chiral interface, and determined the electromagnetic Fresnel coefficients for such propagation. Traditionally, such coefficients are derived under …

Standards For School Leadership : A Critical Review Of The Literature, Lawrence Ingvarson, Michelle Anderson, Peter Gronn, Andrew Jackson

Teaching standards and teacher evaluation

This document contains the review of literature, which maps recent and current developments in relation to standards for school leadership, professional learning and purposes for standards, such as professional development and certification, in Australia and overseas. It also provides a brief review of contemporary theory and research on leadership relevant to leadership standards. There is widespread concern about the recruitment, preparation, continuing professional development and recognition of school leaders. Leadership standards are a central component of most proposals for addressing these concerns.

Agroforestry: Sustaining Native Bee Habitat For Crop Pollination, Mace Vaughan, Scott Hoffman Black Aug 2006

Agroforestry: Sustaining Native Bee Habitat For Crop Pollination, Mace Vaughan, Scott Hoffman Black

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Over one hundred crop species in North America require a visit from an insect pollinator to be most productive. In the past, native bees and feral honey bees could meet the pollination needs of small orchards, tomato and pumpkin fields, and berry patches, because these farms were typically adjacent to areas of habitat that harbored important pollinators. Today, many farms are large and, at the same time, have less nearby habitat to support native pollinators. To ensure adequate pollination services, producers now rely on European honey bees. Research, however, shows that native bees can be important pollinators in agricultural fields …

Teaching Time Savers: Style Points, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Aug 2006

Teaching Time Savers: Style Points, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I began as an assistant professor, I had a pretty good sense of how much time it would take for me to prepare for each class. After a few conversations with my new colleagues, I even had a good sense of how much time I should devote to tasks like office hours and committee work. Somewhere in the middle of grading my first exam, though, it became painfully clear that I had underestimated the amount of time I would need to grade exams!

On The Moral Status Of Humanized Chimeras And The Concept Of Human Dignity, An Ravelingien, Johan Braeckman, Mike Legge Aug 2006

On The Moral Status Of Humanized Chimeras And The Concept Of Human Dignity, An Ravelingien, Johan Braeckman, Mike Legge

Between the Species

Recent advances in the technology of creating chimeras have evoked controversy in policy debates. At centre of controversy is the fear that a substantial contribution of human cells or genes in crucial areas of the animal’s body may at some point render the animal more humanlike than any other animals we know today. Authors who have commented on or contributed to policy debates specify that chimeras which would be too humanlike would have an altered moral status and threaten our notion of ‘human dignity’. This setting offers a productive opportunity to test the notion of human dignity and to emphasize …
