Did You Write A Shakespearean Sonnet?, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2006

Did You Write A Shakespearean Sonnet?, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

One can divide humanity into two groups - those who can be identified as the real author of a Shakespearean sonnet, and those who cannot. Willard Espy revealed in his book The World's Gotten Out (Clarkson Potter, 1989) the method of establishing authorship: look for the first letter of a name anywhere in the first line of a given sonnet, the second letter of the name anywhere in the second line of the same sonnet, and so on until the full name is spelled out. Sure enough, Willard Espy appears in Sonnet 114.

Climate Variability Has A Stabilizing Effect On The Coexistence Of Prairie Grasses, Peter B. Adler, Janneke Hille Ris Lambers, Phaedon C. Kyriakidis, Qingfeng Guan, Jonathan M. Levine Aug 2006

Climate Variability Has A Stabilizing Effect On The Coexistence Of Prairie Grasses, Peter B. Adler, Janneke Hille Ris Lambers, Phaedon C. Kyriakidis, Qingfeng Guan, Jonathan M. Levine

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

How expected increases in climate variability will affect species diversity depends on the role of such variability in regulating the coexistence of competing species. Despite theory linking temporal environmental fluctuations with the maintenance of diversity, the importance of climate variability for stabilizing coexistence remains unknown because of a lack of appropriate long-term observations. Here, we analyze three decades of demographic data from a Kansas prairie to demonstrate that interannual climate variability promotes the coexistence of three common grass species. Specifically, we show that (i) the dynamics of the three species satisfy all requirements of ‘‘storage effect’’ theory based on recruitment …

Hydrochemistry In An Alpine Karst System, Sequoia And Kings Canyon National Parks, California, Joel Despain Aug 2006

Hydrochemistry In An Alpine Karst System, Sequoia And Kings Canyon National Parks, California, Joel Despain

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study uses high-resolution, long-term conductivity, temperature, discharge, pH, and laboratory data from 2001 through 2003 from an alpine karst spring located at 2,500 m amsl in Sequoia National Park, California to reveal detailed chemical parameters of this karst system. The data show a system with a pronounced spring run-off, extended periods of base flow quiescence, storm responses tied to precipitation as rain or as snowfall, and clear diurnal and seasonal patterns of discharge. pH and spC values show an inverse relationship to discharge and temperature, which are generally in phase. Total inorganic carbon (TIC) and the fraction of mineral-derived …

Sustainability With Globalization: An Unsustainable Proposition, Daniel B. Reader Aug 2006

Sustainability With Globalization: An Unsustainable Proposition, Daniel B. Reader

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Globalization is recognized as a world-encompassing phenomenon, even as its benefits are debated. Sustainability, the capacity to maintain high standards of living through generations, is at stake. This paper examines the problems of sustainability with globalization from several perspectives. High statistical correlation between indices of globalization and environmental degradation (r2 = 0.977, p < .001) is found using multi-dimensional scaling software. The socially destabilizing, culture flattening effects of globalization are examined, and the terms ‘nationalism’ and ‘terrorism’ are defined. On the basis of its medial position among the indices of both globalization and environmental degradation, Chile is explored in a case study of the interaction. Conclusions regarding Chile’s vulnerabilities are reached, and the country’s environmental, social, and economic ‘weak spots’ are identified. The ethical positions of globalization and sustainability are considered, and the conclusion that there is very little that can be done to alter the nature of the interaction is drawn. It is suggested that globalization minimizes the prospects of success in efforts toward sustainability by maximizing vulnerabilities among sustainability’s components.

The Effects Of Avian Influenza Outbreak On U.S. Poultry Prices, Shang-Ho Yang Aug 2006

The Effects Of Avian Influenza Outbreak On U.S. Poultry Prices, Shang-Ho Yang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Even in the absence of proven human-to-human transmission of the disease, the uncertainty surrounding bird flu could devastate regional economic growth and financial markets. Confirmed cases of human infection from several subtypes of avian influenza infection have been reported since 1997. According to WHO (World Health Organization), experts indicate that there is a possible risk of infection to people who have contact with infected birds or surfaces that have been contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds during an outbreak of avian influenza among poultry. On May 8, 2006, WHO reported on 207 cases that resulted in 115 people's …

Do The Goal Orientations Of National Board Certified Teachers Differ From Their Non-Certified Counterparts?, Carrie Newby Aug 2006

Do The Goal Orientations Of National Board Certified Teachers Differ From Their Non-Certified Counterparts?, Carrie Newby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Given the increasing number of those achieving certification through National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and the amount of federal money NBPTS has been awarded to design the assessment of identifying teachers, the majority of research has focused on whether National Board Certified teachers impact student achievement and whether NBPTS effectively measures teacher quality. There is very little, if any, published research that addresses other factors that could possibly distinguish teachers that have obtained National Board Certification, however. In the current study, it was presumed that goal orientation might be an important factor that could distinguish those who have …

Stochastic Adaptive Control Model For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, W. W. Recker Aug 2006

Stochastic Adaptive Control Model For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, W. W. Recker

Electrical Engineering

An adaptive control model of a network of signalized intersections is proposed based on a discrete-time, stationary, Markov decision process. The model incorporates probabilistic forecasts of individual vehicle actuations at downstream inductance loop detectors that are derived from a macroscopic link transfer function. The model is tested both on a typical isolated traffic intersection and a simple network comprised of five four-legged signalized intersections, and compared to full-actuated control. Analyses of simulation results using this approach show significant improvement over traditional full-actuated control, especially for the case of high volume, but not saturated, traffic demand.

How Magnetotactic Bacteria Make Magnetosomes Queue Up, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria contain chains of magnetosomes that comprise a permanent magnetic dipole in each cell. In two separate, recent papers, Scheffel et al. and Komeili et al. describe the roles of the proteins MamJ and MamK in magnetosome chain formation. Here, we describe the two studies and highlight questions that must be addressed in future investigations of how magnetotactic bacteria construct their magnetic compass needles.

Handheld Technology: Impact On Student Learning, Patricia M. Corwin

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The author in this project presents research on: (a) handheld technology in the classroom, (b) challenges of handheld technology, (c) pedagogical benefits of handheld technology in the classroom, and (d) methods of technology implementation. The utilization of handheld technology in the classroom improves students' learning of concepts and skills. A major concern of the educator is that, with the use of technology, students will bypass the bridge to genuine understanding, and instead obtain a relatively effortless solution to standard problems through technology aids, while they present the appearance of mastery of a concept. However, research indicates that technology, when implemented …

An Algorithm To Generate 4-Regular Planar Hamiltonian Graphs, Mehmet Ascigil Aug 2006

An Algorithm To Generate 4-Regular Planar Hamiltonian Graphs, Mehmet Ascigil

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this paper, the problem of randomly generating 4-regular planar Hamiltonian graphs is discussed and a solution is described. An algorithm which efficiently generates the graphs in linear time and in a near-uniform manner is given. In addition, a formula is provided that determines the total number of such graphs. The generation of graphs starts with forming the Hamiltonian cycle of the final graph. Each vertex is randomly assigned to be connected with zero. one. Or two edges in the area bounded by the Hamiltonian cycle. A positive prefix vector is used to determine all the edges in the area …

The Effect Of Varying Cadence In Cycle Ergometry On Submaximal Predictions Of Peak Oxygen Uptake, Zachary Callahan Aug 2006

The Effect Of Varying Cadence In Cycle Ergometry On Submaximal Predictions Of Peak Oxygen Uptake, Zachary Callahan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that varying cadence had on the ability of a submaximal cycle ergometry test to accurately predict peak oxygen uptake (VO2) using the standard YMCA protocol workloads. There has been limited scholarship investigating the effect that varying cadence has on trained cyclists and almost none on untrained participants. For this study twelve moderately healthy participants (age: 20.75 ± 1.87, body fat: 15.8 ± 4.91 %) who did not use cycling as part of their workout regime performed a peak VO2 cycle test and three randomized submaximal tests. The three submaximal tests …

Strategies For Reducing Mosquito-Borne Disease Vulnerability In Equine Populations: A Kentucky Case Study, Sara Dalton Aug 2006

Strategies For Reducing Mosquito-Borne Disease Vulnerability In Equine Populations: A Kentucky Case Study, Sara Dalton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examined equine management practices that limit or contribute to the spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-bome disease. I hypothesize that there is a relationship between equine management practices and outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease in horse populations. Improved and appropriate mosquito habitat management may limit the risk of mosquito-borne disease in humans and horses by helping to lower the mosquito populations. The study goals were to recognize equine management practices and mosquito prevention practices that foster outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease. This study used a questionnaire for county level analysis of equine management practices and the relationship to …

The Effects Of Item Grouping On Test Reliability, Holly Mackey Aug 2006

The Effects Of Item Grouping On Test Reliability, Holly Mackey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Optimal ordering of items on a multidimensional test has been the focus of several studies. In all but one study, previous research centered on measures of personality or opinion. The current study examines item grouping effects for a cognitive ability test. Two forms of a cognitive ability test containing four constructs (verbal ability, basic computation, number series, and spatial visualization) were prepared. Form A consisted of items grouped by construct, and Form B had items dispersed randomly throughout the test. The order of items within a construct remained the same for both forms. Tests were administered to 186 undergraduate psychology …

The Green World Of Dystopian Fiction, Martin Hensley Aug 2006

The Green World Of Dystopian Fiction, Martin Hensley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Northrop Frye was the first theorist to develop the green world archetype; Frye used the term to refer to a recurring motif in Shakespearean comedy. In several of Shakespeare's comedies, the protagonists leave the civilized world and venture into the green world, or nature, to escape from the irrational law of society, which is the case in such comedies as As You Like It and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Elements of the green world can also be found in Shakespearean tragedy, where the natural retreat serves as a temporary escape for the protagonists. Such a green world exists in three …

Pseudostationary Phase For Solid Phase Extraction, Qing Zhao Aug 2006

Pseudostationary Phase For Solid Phase Extraction, Qing Zhao

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A unique pseudostationary phase for Solid Phase Extraction is presented. This pseudostationary phase consists of surfactant, which is initially immobilized onto hydrophilic cation exchange resin. The surfactant chain through hydrophobic interactions extracts hydrophobic analytes in the same manner as conventional bonded alkyl moieties on silica based non-polar sorbents. Although hydrophobic analytes can be efficiently trapped on commercially available non-polar sorbents (i.e. Ci8 silica), organic solvents that are necessary to break strong hydrophobic interactions between the analytes and the sorbent are harmful. They are also incompatible for direct introduction into a reversed phase liquid chromatographic set up. In the presented approach, …
