A Generalized Three-Phase Coupling Method For Distributed Simulation Of Power Systems, Jian Wu Aug 2006

A Generalized Three-Phase Coupling Method For Distributed Simulation Of Power Systems, Jian Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Simulation of power system behavior is a highly useful tool for planning, analysis of stability, and operator training. Traditionally, small power system studies are dominated by the time taken to solve the machine dynamics equations, while larger studies are dominated by the time taken to solve the network equations. With the trend towards more sophisticated and realistic modeling, the size and complexity of simulations of a power system grow tremendously. The ever-increasing need for computational power can be satisfied by the application of distributed simulation. Also power systems are distributed in nature. The terrestrial power systems are divided into groups …

Computational Simulation Of Dynamics Of Nematic Liquid Crystals In The Presence Of Nanoparticles And Biological Macromolecules, Huangli Wu Aug 2006

Computational Simulation Of Dynamics Of Nematic Liquid Crystals In The Presence Of Nanoparticles And Biological Macromolecules, Huangli Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Recent research shows that liquid crystals can be used to report the presence of different types of substances through optical amplication of ligand-receptor binding. In this work, simulations based on a coarse-grained method have been performed to study a class of liquid-crystal-based sensors. A tensor order parameter was used to model the liquid crystalline system and the Beris-Edwards formulation was employed to obtain the time evolution of a liquid crystal medium containing particles. The simulation cases are built using three-dimensional unstructured meshes and the simulation geometries studied include simple models involving spheres as well as detailed modeling for a protein. …

Writing Individualized Education Plans For Students With Specific Learning Disabilities: Compliance After The No Child Left Behind Act, Robin Richards Ballard

Theses and Dissertations

IDEIA requires a student who receives special education services to have an IEP that is specific to each student and NCLB requires that all students be taught the same knowledge and skills. The purpose of this study was to determine with which federal school law, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) or Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA), school districts in Mississippi are choosing to comply and what drives that decision. The research questions were: (a) Are Mississippi school districts choosing to comply with NCLB or IDEIA when writing IEPs for their students receiving special education services? and (b) What …

Development Of A System For The Measurement Of Aerodynamic Forces On Rotating Sports Balls, Amar A. Amin Aug 2006

Development Of A System For The Measurement Of Aerodynamic Forces On Rotating Sports Balls, Amar A. Amin

Theses and Dissertations

The importance of sports engineering has increased in the past decade as the demand for athletes and their equipment has increased. Similarly, the aerodynamics of blunt bodies such as prolate spheroids is of particular interest to aerodynamicists seeking to reduce drag. A system was developed to measure aerodynamic forces on rugby balls. The rugby balls, which varied in size and surface textures, were tested at multiple angles of attack, rotational rates, and wind tunnel velocities. A force balance utilizing load cells in conjunction with a subsonic wind tunnel was used to obtain lift and drag forces. A detailed description of …

Jobs-Housing Balance & Individual Spatial Choices: A Case Study Of Saturn Workers In Spring Hill, Tennessee, Jonathan Del Bosco Aug 2006

Jobs-Housing Balance & Individual Spatial Choices: A Case Study Of Saturn Workers In Spring Hill, Tennessee, Jonathan Del Bosco

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the jobs-housing balance and the excess commute of Saturn employees in Spring Hill. Until recently, the number of jobs has greatly exceeded the number of houses. In 2005 the balance is about even, however many newer residents are believed to be people who work in Nashville. Many Saturn employees live on the outskirts of Spring Hill and must commute longer distances to work. A spatial analysis using GIS of employee home locations shows that 74% of employees commute is in excess compared to if employees actually lived within Spring Hill. Surveys of Saturn employees shows traffic en …

On The Design Of Wideband Antennas Using Mixed Order Tangential Vector Finite Elements, Tutku Karacolak Aug 2006

On The Design Of Wideband Antennas Using Mixed Order Tangential Vector Finite Elements, Tutku Karacolak

Theses and Dissertations

A 3D Finite Element Boundary Integral technique (FE-BI) using mixed-order tangential vector finite elements (TVFE?s) is presented. This technique is used to design two wide band antennas and an ultra wideband (UWB) antenna array. Tetrahedral elements are used for domain discretization because they offer higher flexibility when simulating complex structures. A set of hierarchical mixed-order TVFE?s up to and including order 2.5 is implemented. Hierarchical mixed-order TVFE?s accurately simulate regions with high and low field variations. They also guarantee tangential field continuity across element boundaries and suppress spurious modes. The efficacy of the technique has been tested on two different …

We report on the magnetic properties of epitaxial La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films on Si (100) and Si (111) substrates using SrTiO3 template layer, which demonstrate magnetic and electrical properties at and above room temperature. The magnetization data show magnetic transition and magnetic hysteresis at and above room temperature. The films show well-defined magnetic domains. The ferromagnetic resonance studies show anisotropic effects related to ferromagnetic properties of films. The smaller grain size of about 20 nm in manganite films on SrTiO3 /Si may be one of the reasons to …

Photodetachment Of H- By A Short Laser Pulse In Crossed Static Electric And Magnetic Fields, Liang-You Peng, Qiaoling Wang, Anthony F. Starace Aug 2006

Photodetachment Of H- By A Short Laser Pulse In Crossed Static Electric And Magnetic Fields, Liang-You Peng, Qiaoling Wang, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We present a detailed quantum mechanical treatment of the photodetachment of H- by a short laser pulse in the presence of crossed static electric and magnetic fields. An exact analytic formula is presented for the final state electron wave function (describing an electron in both static electric and magnetic fields and a short laser pulse of arbitrary intensity). In the limit of a weak laser pulse, final state electron wave packet motion is examined and related to the closed classical electron orbits in crossed static fields predicted by Peters and Delos [Phys. Rev. A 47, 3020 (1993)]. Owing to …

Study Of Magnetic Layers In Magnetic Sensors, Lu Yuan Aug 2006

Study Of Magnetic Layers In Magnetic Sensors, Lu Yuan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Interest in highly sensitive magnetic sensors has been great due to their wide applications ranging from data storage to geomagnetic exploration. To achieve better performance, magnetic sensors are usually fabricated with micrometer-sized or submicrometer-sized multilayer structures. The thickness of each layer can be as thin as a few angstroms. The magnetic properties of these small and thin layers are quite different from those of the bulk. As the size of the magnetic devices shrinks and the thickness of the ferromagnetic films decreases, the chance of having defects becomes higher. Those defects may be formed during thin film deposition, annealing and …

Phase Transitions And Change Of Type In Low-Temperature Heat, Ralph A. Saxton, Katarzyna Saxton Aug 2006

Phase Transitions And Change Of Type In Low-Temperature Heat, Ralph A. Saxton, Katarzyna Saxton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Classical heat pulse experiments have shown heat to propagate in waves through crystalline materials at temperatures close to absolute zero. With increasing temperature, these waves slow down and finally disappear, to be replaced by diffusive heat propagation. Several features surrounding this phenomenon are examined in this work. The model used switches between an internal parameter (or extended thermodynamics) description and a classical (linear or nonlinear) Fourier law setting. This leads to a hyperbolic-parabolic change of type, which allows wavelike features to appear beneath the transition temperature and diffusion above. We examine the region around and immediately below the transition temperature, …

Adaptive Control Of Micro Air Vehicles, Joshua Stephen Matthews Aug 2006

Adaptive Control Of Micro Air Vehicles, Joshua Stephen Matthews

Theses and Dissertations

Although PID controllers work well on Miniature Air Vehicles (MAVs), they require tuning for each MAV. Also, they quickly lose performance in the presence of actuator failures or changes in the MAV dynamics. Adaptive control algorithms that self tune to each MAV and compensate for changes in the MAV during flight are explored. However, because the autopilots on MAVs are small, many of the adaptive control algorithms like those that employ least squares estimation may take too much code space, memory, and/or computing power. In this thesis we develop several Lyapunov-based model reference adaptive control (MRAC) schemes that are both …

Maximum A Posteriori Resampling Of Noisy, Spatially Correlated Data, John A. Goff, Chris Jenkins, Brian R. Calder Aug 2006

Maximum A Posteriori Resampling Of Noisy, Spatially Correlated Data, John A. Goff, Chris Jenkins, Brian R. Calder

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In any geologic application, noisy data are sources of consternation for researchers, inhibiting interpretability and marring images with unsightly and unrealistic artifacts. Filtering is the typical solution to dealing with noisy data. However, filtering commonly suffers from ad hoc (i.e., uncalibrated, ungoverned) application. We present here an alternative to filtering: a newly developed method for correcting noise in data by finding the “best” value given available information. The motivating rationale is that data points that are close to each other in space cannot differ by “too much,” where “too much” is governed by the field covariance. Data with large uncertainties …

Thomas Aquinas And The Metaphysics Of Law, William S. Brewbaker Aug 2006

Thomas Aquinas And The Metaphysics Of Law, William S. Brewbaker

ExpressO

Despite modernity’s longstanding aversion to metaphysics, legal scholars are increasingly questioning whether law can be understood in isolation from wider questions about the nature of reality. This paper examines perhaps the most famous of metaphysical legal texts– Thomas Aquinas’ still-widely-read Treatise on Law-- with a view toward tracing the influence of Thomas’ metaphysical presuppositions.

This article shows that Thomas’ account of human law cannot be fully understood apart from his metaphysics. Attention to Thomas’ hierarchical view of reality exposes tensions between Thomas’ “top-down” account of law and his sophisticated “bottom-up” observations. For example, Thomas grounds human law’s authority in its …

Limitations Of Receiver/Data Loggers For Monitoring Radiocollared Animals, Stewart W. Breck, Nathan Lance, Jean Bourassa Aug 2006

Limitations Of Receiver/Data Loggers For Monitoring Radiocollared Animals, Stewart W. Breck, Nathan Lance, Jean Bourassa

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We evaluated the effectiveness of receiver/data loggers for monitoring the presence/absence of radiocollared animals in discrete areas. Our primary objective was to determine how variation in transmitter signal strength affected the size of area being monitored. This information will help researchers better manage the uncertainty related to determining an animal’s location relative to a discrete boundary. We used an adjustable attenuator to measure signal strength to determine the minimum number of decibels (dB) required to eliminate detection of a radio signal by receiver/data loggers. We quantified how dB varied depending upon orientation of the transmitter on the animal and distance …

Improved State Estimation For Miniature Air Vehicles, Andrew Mark Eldredge Aug 2006

Improved State Estimation For Miniature Air Vehicles, Andrew Mark Eldredge

Theses and Dissertations

Research in Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV's) continues to push the limitations of size and weight. As technical advances have made UAV's smaller and less expensive, they have become more flexible and extensive in their roles. To continue using smaller and less expensive components while retaining and even enhancing performance requires more sophisticated processing of sensor data in order for the UAV to accurately determine its state and thereby allow the use of feedback in controlling the aircraft automatically. This work presents a three-stage state-estimation scheme for the class of UAV's know as Miniature Air Vehicles (MAV's). The first stage estimates …

Information Content Of Coyote Barks Howls, Brian R. Mitchell, Maja M. Makagon, Michael M. Jaeger, Reginald H. Barrett

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The information content of coyote (Canis latrans) vocalizations is poorly understood, but has important implications for understanding coyote behavior. Coyotes probably use information present in barks or howls to recognize individuals, but the presence of individually-specific information has not bean demonstrated. We found that coyote barks and howls contained individually specific characteristics: discriminant analysis correctly classified barks of five coyotes 69% of the time and howls of six coyotes 83% of the time. We also investigated the stability of vocalization characteristics at multiple distances from the source. Recordings were played back and re-recorded at 10 m, 600m, and …
