Hardware/Software Co-Design Architecture And Implementations Of Mimo Decoders On Fpga, Cao Liang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During the last years, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has attracted great attentions in the area of wireless communications. The hardware implementation of MIMO decoders becomes a challenging task as the complexity of the MIMO system increases. This thesis presents hardware/software co-design architecture and implementations of two typical lattice decoding algorithms, including Agrell and Vardy (AV) algorithm and Viterbo and Boutros (VB) algorithm. Three levels of parallelisms are analyzed for an efficient implementation with the preprocessing part on embedded MicroBlaze soft processor and the decoding part on customized hardware. The decoders for a 4 by 4 MIMO system with 16-QAM modulation …

Mixing And Transport In The Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes Driven Flow Using The Topological Approximation Method, Stephen Michael Rodrigue Aug 2006

Mixing And Transport In The Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes Driven Flow Using The Topological Approximation Method, Stephen Michael Rodrigue

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Transport rates for the Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes driven flow are calculated using the lobe transport theory of Rom-Kedar and Wiggins through application of the Topological Approximation Method (TAM) developed by Rom-Kedar. Numerical studies by Ottino (1989) and Tsega, Michaelides, and Eschenazi (2001) of the driven or perturbed flow indicated frequency dependence of the transport. One goal of the present research is to derive an analytical expression for the transport and to study its dependence upon the perturbation frequency ù. The Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes dynamical system consists of an infinite string of equivalent vortices exhibiting a 2ð spatial periodicity in x …

Paramagnetic lanthanide(III) complexes that contain hyperfine-shifted exchangeable protons offer considerable advantages over diamagnetic molecules as chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) agents for MRI. As part of a program to investigate avenues to improve the sensitivity of such agents, the CEST characteristics of europium(III) macrocyclic complexes having appended hydroxyethyl groups were investigated. The CEST spectrum of the asymmetrical complex, EuCNPHC3+, shows five distinct peaks for each magnetically nonequivalent exchangeable proton in the molecule. The CEST spectra of this complex were fitted to NMR Bloch theory to yield exchange rates between each of six exchanging proton pools (five on the …

Permeability And Flammability Study Of Composite Sandwich Structures For Cryogenic Applications, Monika Bubacz Aug 2006

Permeability And Flammability Study Of Composite Sandwich Structures For Cryogenic Applications, Monika Bubacz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Fiber reinforced plastics offer advantageous specific strength and stiffness compared to metals and has been identified as candidates for the reusable space transportation systems primary structures including cryogenic tanks. A number of carbon and aramid fiber reinforced plastics have been considered for the liquid hydrogen tanks. Materials selection is based upon mechanical properties and containment performance (long and short term) and upon manufacturing considerations. The liquid hydrogen tank carries shear, torque, end load, and bending moment due to gusts, maneuver, take-off, landing, lift, drag, and fuel sloshing. The tank is pressurized to about 1.5 atmosphere (14.6psi or 0.1MPa) differential pressure …

Microcracking Fracture Toughness For Graphite Epoxy Composite Laminates Using Finite Fracture Mechanics, Krishna Kumar Kasturi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Graphite/epoxy composite laminates are widely used in the aerospace industry. However the industry cannot take full advantage of the superior strength and stiffness of composite materials until their failure mechanisms can be thoroughly understood by engineers. Recognizing the importance of such understanding, the current study was undertaken to determine the microcracking fracture toughness in composite laminates using the energy release rate criteria. Three materials of specific interest in the aerospace industry – IM7/977-2, IM7/5555 and IM7/5276-1 – were analyzed. To evaluate the microcracking fracture toughness, displacement controlled static tensile tests were performed. Microcrack density (the number of microcracks per unit …

Tabu Search For Optimization Of Military Supply Distribution, Ben Weber, Brett Bojduj, Jens G. Pohl Aug 2006

Tabu Search For Optimization Of Military Supply Distribution, Ben Weber, Brett Bojduj, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The dynamic and non-hierarchical nature of the military domain presents a challenge for traditional supply chain optimization. Flow networks and simulation techniques have been applied to the military distribution problem, but are unable to provide time-definite delivery to customers. Recently, optimization approaches have been independently applied towards strategic and operational levels of planning. However, decomposing military distribution into separate problems forces optimization techniques to utilize imprecise data. The size of the military distribution problem has prevented optimization techniques from providing end-to-end planning capabilities. This paper presents a Tabu Search algorithm for simultaneously solving strategic and operational levels of planning. The …

Ferritin: Mechanistic Studies And Electron Transfer Properties, Bo Zhang Aug 2006

Ferritin: Mechanistic Studies And Electron Transfer Properties, Bo Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Ferritins are ubiquitous iron storage proteins in living systems. Although much is known about the iron deposition process in ferritin and a mechanism has been developed, several important issues still remain unknown. One lingering question is the less than stoichiometric quantities of hydrogen peroxide detected in previous studies on animal ferritins. Extensive experimental data on identifying the species in competition for peroxide equivalents point to a surprising conclusion that H2O2 generated in the ferroxidase reaction is consumed by amine buffers that are commonly employed in in vitro ferritin studies, while non-nitrogen containing buffers, such as acetate, phosphate, and carbonate, do …

Iterative Least-Squares Wavefront Estimation For General Pupil Shapes, Jannick Rolland, Weiyao Zou Aug 2006

Iterative Least-Squares Wavefront Estimation For General Pupil Shapes, Jannick Rolland, Weiyao Zou

UCF Patents

Iterative algorithm methods and systems for slope or gradient-type data is presented for wavefront zonal estimation of regular and irregular pupil shapes. The methods and systems bears universal wavefront estimation matrices that are directly applicable to any pupil shape without the need to set up new matrices. The algorithm consists in first extending the sampling pupil to a larger regular square shape and second extrapolating the sampled slope data outside of the sampling pupil employing Gerchberg-type iterations. Unbiased least-squares wavefront estimation is then performed in the square domain. Results show that the RMS deviation error of the estimated wavefront from …

The TRANSWAY software application is designed as a set of intelligent collaborative tools supporting operators performing planning and re-planning tasks in a dynamically changing decision-making environment. TRANSWAY includes several agents with strategic and operational planning and re-planning capabilities. The principal agent is based on …

Sequences Of Reflection Functors And The Preprojective Component Of A Valued Quiver, Mark Kleiner, Helene R. Tyler Aug 2006

Sequences Of Reflection Functors And The Preprojective Component Of A Valued Quiver, Mark Kleiner, Helene R. Tyler

Mathematics - All Scholarship

This paper concerns preprojective representations of a finite connected valued quiver without oriented cycles. For each such representation, an explicit formula in terms of the geometry of the quiver gives a unique, up to a certain equivalence, shortest (+)-admissible sequence such that the corresponding composition of reflection functors annihilates the representation. The set of equivalence classes of the above sequences is a partially ordered set that contains a great deal of information about the preprojective component of the Auslander-Reiten quiver. The results apply to the study of reduced words in the Weyl group associated to an indecomposable symmetrizable generalized Cartan …

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl Aug 2006

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present some understandings of the human problem-solving activity that we have gained in the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past two decades. Since we feel strongly that the human decision-maker should be an integral component of any computer-based decision-support system, it follows that we would have endeavored to incorporate many of the elements that appear to be important to the user in the design of these systems. The complexity of the human cognitive system is evidenced by the large body of literature that describes problem-solving behavior and the relatively fewer …

Lifetimes of prolate intruder states in 186Pb and oblate intruder states in 194Po have been determined by employing, for the first time, the recoil-decay tagging technique in recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements. In addition, lifetime measurements of prolate states in 188Pb up to the 8+state were carried out using the recoil-gating method. The B(E2) values have been deduced from which deformation parameters lβ2l = 0.29(5) and lβ2l = 0.17(3) for the prolate and the oblate bands, respectively, have been extracted. The results also shed new light on the …

Applications Of Large Vocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition To Fatigue Detection, Sridhar Raghavan Aug 2006

Applications Of Large Vocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition To Fatigue Detection, Sridhar Raghavan

Theses and Dissertations

Applications of speech recognition have evolved in recent years from simple transcription tasks to metadata analysis. This thesis explores the use of speech recognition for automated fatigue detection. The fatigue detection system relies on accurate phonetic alignments from a speech recognition system. The main challenge addressed in this thesis was to make the process of phonetic alignment using speech recognition robust to out of vocabulary words. This requirement was achieved by incorporating confidence measures, which significantly reduce false positives in speech recognition output. This allowed the performance of the fatigue detection system to match the results of other cognitive tests …

Finite Element-Boundary Integral Method And Its Application To Implantable Antenna Design For Wireless Data Telemetry, Jose S. Pvillalta Aug 2006

Finite Element-Boundary Integral Method And Its Application To Implantable Antenna Design For Wireless Data Telemetry, Jose S. Pvillalta

Theses and Dissertations

A non-stationary Krylov subspace based iterative solver for the three dimensional finite element-boundary integral (FE-BI) method for implantable antennas is presented. The present method numerically solves the frequency domain Maxwell?s equations in the variational form to formulate the finite element solution using hexahedral discretization elements in conjunction with the appropriate boundary integral equations. Four different solvers are used to investigate the convergence behavior of the FE-BI technique on the design of the antennas. The scheme is then applied to two miniaturized planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA): a serpentine and a spiral. The antennas are designed for the Medical Implant Communication Service …

Scribe: A Clustering Approach To Semantic Information Retrieval, Joseph R. Langley Aug 2006

Scribe: A Clustering Approach To Semantic Information Retrieval, Joseph R. Langley

Theses and Dissertations

Information retrieval is the process of fulfilling a user?s need for information by locating items in a data collection that are similar to a complex query that is often posed in natural language. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) was the predominant technique employed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology?s Text Retrieval Conference for many years until limitations of its scalability to large data sets were discovered. This thesis describes SCRIBE, a modification of LSI with improved scalability. SCRIBE clusters its semantic index into discrete volumes described by high-dimensional extensions to computer graphics data structures. SCRIBE?s clustering strategy limits the …

Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis has proved to be an important tool for assessing autonomic nervous system. For instance, it has been used during dipyridamole echocardiographic test to differentiate ischemic from nonischemic responses [6]. RR Interval analysis can provide additional information that can lead to early detection of a possible change in the activity of the autonomic nervous system. HRV analysis can be done using Wavelet Transform. This thesis presents a modification of an existing algorithm for extracting the R-R interval from EKG data sets and the use of wavelet transform (WT) technique to compute the timerequency domain energy quantities. …

Nlcviz: Tensor Visualization And Defect Detection In Nematic Liquid Crystals, Ketan Mehta Aug 2006

Nlcviz: Tensor Visualization And Defect Detection In Nematic Liquid Crystals, Ketan Mehta

Theses and Dissertations

Visualization and exploration of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) data is a challenging task due to the multidimensional and multivariate nature of the data. Simulation study of an NLC consists of multiple timesteps, where each timestep computes scalar, vector, and tensor parameters on a geometrical mesh. Scientists developing an understanding of liquid crystal interaction and physics require tools and techniques for effective exploration, visualization, and analysis of these data sets. Traditionally, scientists have used a combination of different tools and techniques like 2D plots, histograms, cut views, etc. for data visualization and analysis. However, such an environment does not provide the …

Applying Goodness-Of-Fit Techniques In Testing Time Series Gaussianity And Linearity, Nusrat Jahan Aug 2006

Applying Goodness-Of-Fit Techniques In Testing Time Series Gaussianity And Linearity, Nusrat Jahan

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, we present two new frequency domain tests for testing the Gaussianity and linearity of a sixth-order stationary univariate time series. Both are two-stage tests. The first stage is a test for the Gaussianity of the series. Under Gaussianity, the estimated normalized bispectrum has an asymptotic chi-square distribution with two degrees of freedom. If Gaussianity is rejected, the test proceeds to the second stage, which tests for linearity. Under linearity, with non-Gaussian errors, the estimated normalized bispectrum has an asymptotic non-central chi-square distribution with two degrees of freedom and constant noncentrality parameter. If the process is nonlinear, the …
