Synthesis And Characterization Of New Truxenones For Nonlinear Optical Applications, Giolin Mao, Kenneth D. Singer, Greg A. Wiggers, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

The synthesis of several new truxenones and one tris(dicyanomethylene) derivative substituted by different amines at positions 4, 9, and 14 is reported. A complete characterization of the NLO properties of representative derivatives was carried out by hyper-Rayleigh scattering; the major electronic effects and the influence of the structural modifications on the NLO properties have been examined. Because of their C3 symmetry and their large first hyperpolarizability, the chiral versions of the tris(dicyanomethylene) truxene derivatives are of interest for second-order nonlinear optics in uniaxially aligned chiral media.

Custom And Tradition Versus Reason In Modern Secular And Religious Moral Reasoning And In Modern Constitutional Law, Randall Kelso Aug 2006

Custom And Tradition Versus Reason In Modern Secular And Religious Moral Reasoning And In Modern Constitutional Law, Randall Kelso

ExpressO

Custom and Tradition versus Reason in Modern Secular and Religious Moral Reasoning and in Modern Constitutional Law: Contemporary debates over values, the so-called “Culture Wars,” are best understood not as a debate between religious and secular ideologies, but rather a debate between traditional ideologies, whether religious or secular, which reflect customary or traditional norms, versus progressive ideology, whether religious or secular, which reflect rational deliberation about moral reasoning. Customary or traditional attitudes, both secular and religious, have supported, among other things, slavery, segregation and anti-miscegenation laws, denial of equal rights for women, anti-Semitism, rejection of the cosmology of Galileo, rejection …

Crystals of the title compounds were grown solvothermally in an ethanol-water solvent mixture using ruthenium triiodide, 2,2'-bipyridine and bismuth triiodide as starting materials. Tetrakis[2-(2-pyridyl)pyridinium] tetra-3-iodo-hexa-2-iodo-dodecaiodohexabismuthate, (C10H9N2)4[Bi6I22], crystallizes in the triclinic space group P and is the major reaction product. The asymmetric unit of this compound consists of half a centrosymmetric [Bi6I22]4- anion and two independent 2,2'-bipyridinium cations. The minor product of the reaction is bis[tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II)] di-4-iodo-octa-2-iodo-dodecaiodohexabismuthate, [Ru(C10H8N2)3] …

Recently, a set of nine nonmagic nuclei with anomalous values of the B(E2) ratio B4/2 ≡ B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1)/B(E2; 2+1 → 0+1) were identified. Such values are outside the range allowed by current collective models. In the present work, the B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1) values for two of these nuclei, 98Ru and 180Pt, were re-measured to determine if the current literature values for these nuclei are correct. 98 …

Positive Current Correlations Associated With Super-Poissonian Shot Noise, Yuanzhen Chen, Richard A. Webb Aug 2006

Positive Current Correlations Associated With Super-Poissonian Shot Noise, Yuanzhen Chen, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

We report on shot noise cross spectrum measurements in a beam splitter configuration. Electrons tunneling through potential barriers are incident on a beam splitter and scattered into two separate channels. Such a partition process introduces correlations between the fluctuations of the two currents. Our work has confirmed that the generally expected negative correlations resulted from sub-Poissonian electron sources. More interestingly, positive cross correlations associated with barriers exhibiting super-Poissonian shot noise have also been observed. We have found that both positive and negative correlations can be related to the noise properties of the electron source.

Sources Of Variability In A Proteomic Experiment, Scott Daniel Crawford Aug 2006

Sources Of Variability In A Proteomic Experiment, Scott Daniel Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

The study of proteomics holds the hope for detecting serious diseases earlier than is currently possible by analyzing blood samples in a mass spectrometer. Unfortunately, the statistics involved in comparing a control group to a diseased group are not trivial, and these difficulties have led others to incorrect decisions in the past. This paper considers a nested design that was used to quantify and identify the sources of variation in the mass spectrometer at BYU, so that correct conclusions can be drawn from blood samples analyzed in proteomics. Algorithms were developed which detect, align, correct, and cluster the peaks in …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present a modification to the iodine cell Doppler technique that eliminates the need for an observed stellar template spectrum. For a given target star, we iterate toward a synthetic template spectrum beginning with an existing template of a similar star. We then perturb the shape of this first-guess template to match the program observation of the target star taken through an iodine cell. The elimination of a separate template observation saves valuable telescope time, a feature that is ideally suited for the quick-look strategy employed by the "Next 2000 Stars" (N2K) planet search program. Tests using Keck HIRES (High …

Information Theoretical Approach To Single-Molecule Experimental Design And Interpretation, David Talaga Aug 2006

Information Theoretical Approach To Single-Molecule Experimental Design And Interpretation, David Talaga

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We use Shannon's definition of information to develop a theory to predict a photon-counting-based single-molecule experiment's ability to measure the desired property. We treat three phenomena that are commonly measured on single molecules: spectral fluctuations of a solvatochromic dye; assignment of the azimuthal dipole angle; determination of a distance by fluorescence resonant energy transfer using Förster's theory. We consider the effect of background and other "imperfections" on the measurement through the decrease in information.

Determining The H+ Region / Pdr Equation Of State In Star-Forming Regions, N. P. Abel, Gary J. Ferland Aug 2006

Determining The H+ Region / Pdr Equation Of State In Star-Forming Regions, N. P. Abel, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The emission-line regions of starburst galaxies and active nuclei reveal a wealth of spectroscopic information. A unified picture of the relationship among ionized, atomic, and molecular gas makes it possible to better understand these observations. We performed a series of calculations designed to determine the equation of state-the relationship among density, temperature, and pressure-through emission-line diagnostic ratios that form in the H+ region and the photodissociation region (PDR). We consider a wide range of physical conditions in the H+ region. We connect the H+ region to the PDR by considering two constant pressure cases: one with no …

Effects Of Anthropogenic Land Use On Odonata In Playas Of The Southern High Plains, K. M. Hernandez, B. A. Reece, N. E. Mcintyre Aug 2006

Effects Of Anthropogenic Land Use On Odonata In Playas Of The Southern High Plains, K. M. Hernandez, B. A. Reece, N. E. Mcintyre

Western North American Naturalist

Playas are ephemeral wetlands that are the only source of aboveground freshwater in the southern Great Plains, making them of vital importance to aquatic and amphibious animals. Playas are also highly threatened from anthropogenic land use (chiefly agriculture, which decreases hydroperiod through increased sedimentation). We examined community structure of adult odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) in playas differing in the 2 main regional forms of surrounding land use (cropland vs. grassland). Analysis of odonate diversity revealed high overlap between cropland and grassland playas. Traditional species-area theory did not fit observed patterns, as there appears to be a threshold playa size that …

The Role Of Interplanetary Scattering In Western Hemisphere Large Solar Energetic Particle Events, Glenn M. Mason, Mihir I. Desai, Christina M.S. Cohen, Richard A. Mewaldt, Edward C. Stone, Joseph R. Dwyer

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Using high-sensitivity instruments on the ACE spacecraft, we have examined the intensities of O and Fe in 14 large solar energetic particleevents whose parent activity was in the solar western hemisphere. Sampling the intensities at low (∼273 keV nucleonˉ¹) and high (∼12 MeV nucleonˉ¹) energies, we find that at the same kinetic energy per nucleon, the Fe/O ratio decreases with time, as has been reported previously. This behavior is seen in more than 70% of the cases during the rise to maximum intensity and continues in most cases into the decay phase. We find that for most events if we …

Unlocking Test-Driven Development, Chris H. Knapp

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Women Partnering is non-profit organization that helps women who are financially vulnerable. This organization establishes relationships with the women and connects them to support services. This project created a software system to support Women Partnering's daily operations and reporting needs, which replaced the previous manually intensive, paper-based system. There were many problems with the previous paper-based system including the following: data duplication, data not readily available, and lack of a reporting capability. Besides these problems, the previous system was not expected to support anticipated growth. The student followed a Test-Driven Development Methodology while building the software system. This is the …

Methane Conversion In Pulsed Corona Discharge Reactors, Morris D. Argyle, Gui-Bing Zhao, Sanil John, Ji-Jun Zhang, Linna Wang, Suresh S. Muknahallipatna, Jerry C. Hamann, John F. Ackerman, Ovid A. Plumb

Faculty Publications

This work reports the effect of capacitance, cathode material, gas flow rate and specific energy input on methane conversion, energy efficiency and product selectivity in a co-axial cylinder pulsed corona discharge reactor. Ethan and acetylene appear to be formed from dimerization of CH3 radicals and CH radicals, respectively, while ethylene is formed mainly from the dehydrogenation of ethane. At a given power input, low capacitance with high pulse frequency results in higher methane conversion and energy efficiency than operation at high capacitance with low pulse frequency. Platinum coated stainless steel cathodes slightly enhance methane conversion relative to stainless steel cathodes, …

Deforestation And Land-Use Change In Veracruz, Mexico: A Remote Sensing Analysis, Mark Dalrymple

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze deforestation using multi spectral satellite imagery in a region of Veracruz and Puebla Mexico. A smaller study area in a subtropical region in Veracruz was used to relate changes in forest cover to changes in land-uses within the smaller region. A land-use classification was created for this study that includes fallow/barren, subsistence agriculture, sugar cane, urban/settlement, grazing lands and other vegetation. A change detection was performed to analyze the extent of each land-use encroaching into forests between 1979 and 2002. Another objective of the study is to examine the seasonal variation of …

External Support Vector Machine Clustering, Charlie Mcchesney Aug 2006

External Support Vector Machine Clustering, Charlie Mcchesney

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The external-Support Vector Machine (SVM) clustering algorithm clusters data vectors with no a priori knowledge of each vector's class. The algorithm works by first running a binary SVM against a data set, with each vector in the set randomly labeled, until the SVM converges. It then relabels data points that are mislabeled and a large distance from the SVM hyperplane. The SVM is then iteratively rerun followed by more label swapping until no more progress can be made. After this process, a high percentage of the previously unknown class labels of the data set will be known. With sub-cluster identification …

Nanopore Detector Feedback Control Using Cheminformatics Methods Integrated With Labview/Labwindows Tools, Srikanth Sendamangalam Aug 2006

Nanopore Detector Feedback Control Using Cheminformatics Methods Integrated With Labview/Labwindows Tools, Srikanth Sendamangalam

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Single biopolymers (DNA, RNA, or polypeptide) can be examined using an alpha-hemolysin channel detector. When a biopolymer is present in an alpha-hemolysin channel it can produce a highly structured ionic current blockade pattern, where the lifetimes at various sub-blockade levels reveal information about the kinetics of the biopolymer. Here we describe integration of LabVIEW/LabWindows automation capabilities with the "in-house" Channel Current Cheminformatics (CCC) software. Data acquired with LabVIEW/LabWindows is passed to the CCC software, on a streaming real time basis, for analysis and classification. The classification results are then quickly returned to the LabVIEW/LabWindows automation software for experimental feedback control. …

Analysis Of A Turbopiston Pump, Kiranmayi Venkata Sristy Aug 2006

Analysis Of A Turbopiston Pump, Kiranmayi Venkata Sristy

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An innovative pump, TurboPiston Pump, has been invented to incorporate the merits of centrifugal, axial, and positive displacement pumps. The TurboPiston pump is designed to deliver large flow rates at very high pressure of up to 1000 psia. To improve the original design, an understanding of flow behavior inside the pump is needed. Therefore, this thesis focuses on simulating the flow field inside the pump and studying its performance. This study includes modeling the pump using a commercial CAD package, GAMBIT and a 3-D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver, FLUENT. The calculation employs both the simplified steady moving frame and …

Building Metal-Anion Layers Within A Preovskite Host, Xiao Zhang Aug 2006

Building Metal-Anion Layers Within A Preovskite Host, Xiao Zhang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Alkali metal halide layers were constructed within Dion-Jacobson (DJ) layered perovskites by a two-step sequential intercalation method. Reductive intercalation with an alkali metal, followed by oxidative intercalation with chlorine gas, leads to the formation of compounds of the general formula, (A2Cl)LaNb2O7 (A = Rb, Cs). Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data shows that an alkali metal halide layer is formed between the perovskite blocks. The alkali metal cation is eight-coordinate with 4 oxygens from the perovskite layer and 4 chlorides from the new halide layer; this environment is similar to cesium in the CsCl structure. Thermal analysis indicates that …
