Landscape Use And Movements Of Wolves In Relation To Livestock In A Wildland–Agriculture Matrix, Andreas S. Chavez, Eric M. Gese Aug 2006

Landscape Use And Movements Of Wolves In Relation To Livestock In A Wildland–Agriculture Matrix, Andreas S. Chavez, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wolves (Canis lupus) have expanded their distribution into areas of the midwest United States that have not had wolves for several decades. With recolonization of wolves into agricultural areas, there is increasing concern of wolf–livestock conflicts. To assess the risk wolves may pose to livestock, we initiated a 3-year study investigating the activity patterns, movements, habitat use, visitation to livestock pastures by wolves, and the occurrence of depredation events in an agricultural–wildland matrix in northwestern Minnesota, USA. From June 1997 to November 1999, we captured 23 wolves, including pups, from 3 packs; we radio-collared 16 of these wolves. …

Estimation Of Heat Transfer Coefficients Of Cooked Boneless Ham, Kimberly Ryland, Lijun Wang, Alejandro Amézquita, Curtis L. Weller Aug 2006

Estimation Of Heat Transfer Coefficients Of Cooked Boneless Ham, Kimberly Ryland, Lijun Wang, Alejandro Amézquita, Curtis L. Weller

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Biological heat transfer depends on many factors; however it is necessary to understand the cooling process to design safe and efficient meat cooling techniques. For this reason the convective heat transfer coefficient h of a five pound processed boneless pork ham was evaluated by two methods using a similarly shaped aluminum block. A Lumped Parameter approach in which mass transfer was ignored resulted in a heat transfer coefficient value of 5.10 W/m2K. A second method, which included mass transfer, resulted in a value of 9.11 W/m2K. These values fell within the expected range of 5-20 W/m …

Law And The Science Of Networks: An Overview And An Application To The "Patent Explosion", Katherine J. Strandburg

ExpressO

The network may be the metaphor of the present era. A network, consisting of “nodes” and “links,” may be a group of individuals linked by friendship; a group of computers linked by network cables; a system of roads or airline flights -- or another of a virtually limitless variety of systems of connected “things.” The past few years have seen an explosion of interest in “network science,” which seeks to move beyond metaphor to analysis in fields from physics to sociology. Network science highlights the role of relationship patterns in determining collective behavior. It underscores and begins to address the …

Preprojective Representations Of Valued Quivers And Reduced Words In The Weyl Group Of A Kac-Moody Algebra, Mark Kleiner, Allen Pelley Aug 2006

Preprojective Representations Of Valued Quivers And Reduced Words In The Weyl Group Of A Kac-Moody Algebra, Mark Kleiner, Allen Pelley

Mathematics - All Scholarship

This paper studies connections between the preprojective representations of a valued quiver, the (+)-admissible sequences of vertices, and the Weyl group by associating to each preprojective representation a canonical (+)-admissible sequence. A (+)-admissible sequence is the canonical sequence of some preprojective representation if and only if the product of simple reflections associated to the vertices of the sequence is a reduced word in the Weyl group. As a consequence, for any Coxeter element of the Weyl group associated to an indecomposable symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix, the group is infinite if and only if the powers of the element are reduced …

Hidden Markov Model Analysis Of Multichromophore Photobleaching, Troy C. Messina, Hiyun Kim, Jason T. Giurleo, David Talaga Aug 2006

Hidden Markov Model Analysis Of Multichromophore Photobleaching, Troy C. Messina, Hiyun Kim, Jason T. Giurleo, David Talaga

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The interpretation of single-molecule measurements is greatly complicated by the presence of multiple fluorescent labels. However, many molecular systems of interest consist of multiple interacting components. We investigate this issue using multiply labeled dextran polymers that we intentionally photobleach to the background on a single-molecule basis. Hidden Markov models allow for unsupervised analysis of the data to determine the number of fluorescent subunits involved in the fluorescence intermittency of the 6-carboxytetramethylrhodamine labels by counting the discrete steps in fluorescence intensity. The Bayes information criterion allows us to distinguish between hidden Markov models that differ by the number of states, that …

A Flexible Statistical Method For Detecting Genomic Copy-Number Changes Using Hidden Markov Models With Reversible Jump Mcmc , Oscar M. Rueda, Ramon Diaz-Uriarte

COBRA Preprint Series

We have developed a statistical method for the analysis of array based CGH data to detect genomic DNA copy number changes. Our method allows us to answer the biologically relevant questions (what is the probability that a given gene or region has increased or decreased copy number changes) in a clear and simple way, within a rigorous statistical framework. We use a non-homogeneous Hidden Markov Model that incorporates distance between genes, a crucial requirement to analyze data from platforms where distances between probes is highly variable. As the true number of hidden states (states of copy number changes) is not …

Size Reduction Of Microstrip Antennas Using Left-Handed Materials Realized By Complementary Split-Ring Resonators, Aparna Limaye Aug 2006

Size Reduction Of Microstrip Antennas Using Left-Handed Materials Realized By Complementary Split-Ring Resonators, Aparna Limaye

Theses

Recently, metamaterials (MTMs) engineered to have negative values of permittivity and permeability, resulting in a left-handed system, have provided a new frontier for microwave circuits and antennas with possibilities to overcome limitations of the right-handed system. Microwave circuit components such as waveguides, couplers, power dividers and filters, constructed on left-handed materials, have demonstrated properties of backward coupling, phase compensation, reduced sizes, and propagation of evanescent modes. However, there is very limited work to date, on the microstrip antennas with metamaterials. Microstrip antenna is widely used for its low-profile, simplicity of feed and compatibility with planar microstrip circuitry. As the trend …

The most recent major explosive eruption of the Santorini volcano in Greece—around 3600 years before present (B.P.), often referred to as the Minoan eruption—is one of the largest volcanic events known in historical time and has been the subject of intense volcanological and archeological studies [Druitt et al., 1999]. The submarine volcano Kolumbo, located seven kilometers northeast of Santorini and associated with Santorini's tectonic system, erupted explosively in 1650 A.D., resulting in fatalities on the island of Thera [Fouqué, 1879]. A large fraction of the erupted products from the Minoan eruption has been deposited in the …

The "Benefits" Of Non-Delegation: Using The Non-Delegation Doctrine To Bring More Rigor To Benefit-Cost Analysis, Victor B. Flatt Aug 2006

The "Benefits" Of Non-Delegation: Using The Non-Delegation Doctrine To Bring More Rigor To Benefit-Cost Analysis, Victor B. Flatt

ExpressO

This article examines the problems of benefit-cost (or cost-benefit) analysis in our regulatory system and posits that a more nuanced version of the “non-delegation” doctrine (made famous in Schechter Poultry) could improve many of the problems associated with the use of benefit-cost analysis. In particular this article notes that many of the problems with benefit-cost analysis are its use by agencies to make large policy decisions, which could be characterized as legislative. The article also notes that though the “non-delegation” doctrine may appear to be dead or dormant, that a form of it, in separation of powers doctrine, exists in …

Discounting, On Stilts, Douglas A. Kysar

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This paper provides a critical overview of several articles presented at the Intergenerational Discounting and Intergenerational Equity Conference held at the University of Chicago Law School on April 27-28, 2006. First, it demonstrates that conventional normative justifications offered for the use of discounting future costs and benefits for policy analysis in the intergenerational context do not withstand scrutiny. Second, it observes that the compensatory transfers that are sometimes thought to sanitize the cost-benefit procedure in the intergenerational context are deeply problematic, both in their theoretical construction and in their practical adequacy for the tasks they are being deployed to accomplish. …

Simultaneously Optimizing Dose And Schedule Of A New Cytotoxic Agent, Thomas M. Braun, Peter F. Thall, Hoang Nguyen, Marcos De Lima Aug 2006

Simultaneously Optimizing Dose And Schedule Of A New Cytotoxic Agent, Thomas M. Braun, Peter F. Thall, Hoang Nguyen, Marcos De Lima

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Traditionally, phase I clinical trial designs determine a maximum tolerated dose of an experimental cytotoxic agent based on a fixed schedule, usually one course consisting of multiple administrations, while varying the dose per administration between patients. However, in actual medical practice patients often receive several courses of treatment, and some patients may receive one or more dose reductions due to low-grade (non-dose limiting) toxicity in previous courses. As a result, the overall risk of toxicity for each patient is a function of both the schedule and the dose used at each adminstration. We propose a new paradigm for Phase I …

Avoidance Of Future Singularities In Loop Quantum Cosmology, M. Sami, Parampreet Singh, Shinji Tsujikawa Aug 2006

Avoidance Of Future Singularities In Loop Quantum Cosmology, M. Sami, Parampreet Singh, Shinji Tsujikawa

Faculty Publications

We consider the fate of future singularities in the effective dynamics of loop quantum cosmology. Nonperturbative quantum geometric effects which lead to ρ2 modification of the Friedmann equation at high energies result in generic resolution of singularities whenever energy density ρ diverges at future singularities of Friedmann dynamics. Such quantum effects lead to the avoidance of a big rip, which is followed by a recollapsing universe stable against perturbations. Resolution of sudden singularity, the case when pressure diverges but energy density approaches a finite value depends on the ratio of the latter to a critical energy density of the order …

Recovering Grain Boundary Inclination Parameters Through Oblique Double-Sectioning, Eric Richards Homer Aug 2006

Recovering Grain Boundary Inclination Parameters Through Oblique Double-Sectioning, Eric Richards Homer

Theses and Dissertations

A method for the retrieval of grain boundary inclination parameters of the grain boundary character distribution by oblique double-sectioning is proposed. The method, which is similar to the recovery of the orientation distributions from sets of incomplete pole-figures, is described along with a framework for implementation. The method directly measures grain boundary inclinations in a manner similar to serial sectioning while statistically sampling the microstructure comparably to stereological methods. Computer simulations of the method were used to confirm the mathematical framework. Additional simulations, where the grain boundary normal distributions were recovered by both oblique double-sectioning and stereological methods, showed that …
