Price Elasticity Reconsidered: Panel Estimation Of An Agricultural Water Demand Function, Karina Schoengold, David L. Sunding, Georgina Moreno Sep 2006

Price Elasticity Reconsidered: Panel Estimation Of An Agricultural Water Demand Function, Karina Schoengold, David L. Sunding, Georgina Moreno

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Using panel data from a period of water rate reform, this paper estimates the price elasticity of irrigation water demand. Price elasticity is decomposed into the direct effect of water management and the indirect effect of water price on choice of output and irrigation technology. The model is estimated using an instrumental variables strategy to account for the endogeneity of technology and output choices in the water demand equation. Estimation results indicate that the price elasticity of agricultural water demand is -0.79, which is greater than that found in previous studies.

Ecophysiology Of Two Native Invasive Woody Species And Two Dominant Warm-Season Grasses In The Semiarid Grasslands Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Kathleen D. Eggemeyer, Tala Awada, David A. Wedin, F. Edwin Harvey, Xinhua Zhou

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Populations of Pinus ponderosa and Juniperus virginiana are expanding into semiarid Sandhills grasslands in Nebraska. To evaluate the physiological basis of their success, we measured the seasonal course of leaf gas exchange, plant water status, and carbon isotope discrimination in these two native trees and two native C4 grasses (Schizachyrium scoparium and Panicum virgatum). Compared to the trees, grasses had higher net photosynthetic rates (Anet) and water use efficiency (WUE) and more negative predawn and midday water potentials (Ψ) in June and July. While leaf Ψ and rates of leaf gas exchange declined for all …

Covariate Specific Roc Curve With Survival Outcome, Xiao Song, Xiao-Hua Zhou Sep 2006

Covariate Specific Roc Curve With Survival Outcome, Xiao Song, Xiao-Hua Zhou

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve has been extended to survival data recently, including the nonparametric approach by Heagerty, Lumley and Pepe (2000) and the semiparametric approach by Heagerty and Zheng (2005) using standard survival analysis techniques based on two different time-dependent ROC curve definitions. However, both approaches cannot adjust for the effect of covariates on the accuracy of the biomarker. To account for the covariate effect, we propose semiparametric models for covariate specific ROC curves corresponding to the two time-dependent ROC curve definitions, respectively. We show that the estimators are consistent and converge to Gaussian processes. In the case …

Optimal Liquidation Strategies And Their Implications, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka, Yonggan Zhao Sep 2006

Optimal Liquidation Strategies And Their Implications, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka, Yonggan Zhao

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper studies optimal liquidation when the selling price depends on the rate of liquidation, transaction time, volume, and the asset's intrinsic value. A generic closed-form solution for maximizing the discounted liquidation proceeds is derived. To obtain financial insights, three parametric specifications that proxy for increasingly realistic market conditions are examined. In our framework, maximizing liquidation proceeds and minimizing liquidity costs are equivalent. The optimal strategies imply more rapid liquidations in less liquid markets. We also show that volatility is stochastic when market liquidity is unpredictable.

Mesostructured Silica Chemically Doped With RuIi As A Superior Optical Oxygen Sensor, Bingfu Lei, Bin Li, Haoran Zhang, Shaozhe Lu, Zhuhong Zheng, Wenlian Li, Yue Wang Sep 2006

Mesostructured Silica Chemically Doped With RuIi As A Superior Optical Oxygen Sensor, Bingfu Lei, Bin Li, Haoran Zhang, Shaozhe Lu, Zhuhong Zheng, Wenlian Li, Yue Wang

Faculty Publications

Novel oxygen sensors consisting of a [Ru(bpy)2phen]2+ (bpy: 2,2′-bipyridyl, phen: phenathroline) portion covalently grafted to a mesostructured silica-based network are prepared in situ via a sol-gel approach with the help of cetyltrimethylammonium-bromide (CTAB) surfactant. 1,10-Phenanthroline covalently grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate is used as not only the sol-gel precursor but also as the second ligand of the Ru(bpy)2d2 · 2H2O complex to prepare the sol-gel-derived mesostructured silicates for an oxygen sensor. For comparison purposes, the oxygen sensors in which [Ru(bpy)2phen]Q2 is conventionally physically incorporated into the matrix are also prepared. Elemental analysis, NMR, Fourier transform IR, UV-vis electronic absorption, luminescence-intensity quenching …

“Actions As Words, Words As Actions: Sexual Harassment Law, The First Amendment And Verbal Acts, John F. Wirenius Sep 2006

“Actions As Words, Words As Actions: Sexual Harassment Law, The First Amendment And Verbal Acts, John F. Wirenius

ExpressO

The article examines the tension between the hostile work environment under the civil rights laws and the First Amendment’s protection of free speech, even when such speech is offensive and even discriminatory. After discussing the tension and its limits, the author examines other rationales proposed to resolve this tension, and rejecting them as unsatisfactory. Noting that hostile work environment doctrine, as a variable standard, employs a less “bright-line” approach than is typical of the First Amendment’s rule, the author nonetheless finds that the “open texture” of all rules, and the requirement that a hostile work environment be systematically pervasive or …

Noncomparabilities & Non Standard Logics, Robert C. Hockett Sep 2006

Noncomparabilities & Non Standard Logics, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Many normative theories set forth in the welfare economics, distributive justice and cognate literatures posit noncomparabilities or incommensurabilities between magnitudes of various kinds. In some cases these gaps are predicated on metaphysical claims, in others upon epistemic claims, and in still others upon political-moral claims. I show that in all such cases they are best given formal expression in nonstandard logics that reject bivalence, excluded middle, or both. I do so by reference to an illustrative case study: a contradiction known to beset John Rawls's selection and characterization of primary goods as the proper distribuendum in any distributively just society. …

We offer what we think to be the best means of salvaging a foundational Rawlsian position from two forcefully made claims against it - one by Roemer, the other by Arneson.

Co-Operative Lane-Level Positioning Using Markov Localization, Thanh-Son Dao, Keith Yu Kit Leung, Christopher M. Clark, Jan Paul Huissoon Sep 2006

Co-Operative Lane-Level Positioning Using Markov Localization, Thanh-Son Dao, Keith Yu Kit Leung, Christopher M. Clark, Jan Paul Huissoon

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The majority of today's navigation techniques for intelligent transportation systems use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that can provide position information with bounded errors. However, because of the low accuracy and multi-path problem, it is challenging to determine a vehicle's position at lane level. With Markov-based approach based on sharing information among a group of vehicles that are traveling close to each other, the lane positions of vehicles can be found. The algorithm shows its effectiveness in both simulations and experiments with real data.

Development Of A Microscopic Traffic Simulator For Inter-Vehicle Communication Application Research, Keith Yu Kit Leung, Thanh-Son Dao, Christopher M. Clark, Jan Paul Huissoon

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper describes the development of a microscopic traffic simulator purposely designed for ITS researchers studying inter-vehicle communication (IVC) concepts and applications in large traffic networks. The simulator can represent real life vehicles within the simulation by using data from vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, enabling validation of theories with real vehicle data. The software is developed on top of the existing microscopic traffic simulator VISSIM with the added flexibility of modelling and efficiently handling communication between large numbers of vehicles. This along with the software architecture was discussed in detail.
