Numerical Simulation Of Plasma-Based Actuator Vortex Control Of A Turbulent Cylinder Wake, Nathan Keith Mcmullin Sep 2006

Numerical Simulation Of Plasma-Based Actuator Vortex Control Of A Turbulent Cylinder Wake, Nathan Keith Mcmullin

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical study has been performed to investigate the mechanics of the turbulent wake of a circular cylinder that is controlled by a plasma actuator. The numerical investigation implements a straightforward moving wall boundary condition to model the actuator's effects on the flow. Validations of the moving wall for this simulation are set forth with the understanding that the moving wall can model the plasma actuator bulk flow effects at a distance downstream and not in a region near or on the plasma actuator. The moving wall boundary condition is then applied to a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number …

Norming Algebras And Automatic Complete Boundedness Of Isomorphisms Of Operator Algebras, David R. Pitts Sep 2006

Norming Algebras And Automatic Complete Boundedness Of Isomorphisms Of Operator Algebras, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We combine the notion of norming algebra introduced by Pop, Sinclair and Smith with a result of Pisier to show that if A1 and A2 are operator algebras, then any bounded epimorphism of A1 onto A2 is completely bounded provided that A2 contains a norming C*-subalgebra. We use this result to give some insights into Kadison’s Similarity Problem: we show that every faithful bounded homomorphism of a C*-algebra on a Hilbert space has completely bounded inverse, and show that a bounded representation of a C-algebra is similar to a -representation precisely when the image operator algebra -norms itself. We give …

Turning A Blind Eye To Misleading Scientific Testimony: Failure Of Procedural Safeguards In A Capital Case, William C. Thompson Sep 2006

Turning A Blind Eye To Misleading Scientific Testimony: Failure Of Procedural Safeguards In A Capital Case, William C. Thompson

ExpressO

In September 1999, Robin Lovitt was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a pool hall manager in Arlington, Virginia. The DNA evidence that was a key part of the government’s case was presented in a misleading and unfair manner. In this case study, we first examine the way in which DNA evidence was misused. We then discuss the failure of the legal system at all levels to recognize and remedy this problem. Our goal is to explain how a system that supposedly leaves no stone unturned in capital trials managed to miss or ignore a crucial problem …

Neutrino Oscillation Effects On Supernova Light Element Synthesis, Takashi Yoshida, Toshitaka Kajino, Hidekazu Yokomakura, Keichi Kimura, Akira Takamura, Dieter H. Hartmann Sep 2006

Neutrino Oscillation Effects On Supernova Light Element Synthesis, Takashi Yoshida, Toshitaka Kajino, Hidekazu Yokomakura, Keichi Kimura, Akira Takamura, Dieter H. Hartmann

Publications

Neutrion oscillations affect light-element synthesis through the v-process in supernova explosions. The 7Li and 11B yields produced in a supernova explosion of a 16.2 M ⊙ star model increase by factors of 1.9 and 1.3 in the case of the large mixing angle solution with a normal mass hierarchy of sin^2 2θ13 >~ 2x10^-3 compared with those without the oscillations. In the case of an inerted mass hierarchy or a nonadiabatic 1-3 mixing resonance, the increment of their yields is much smaller. Neutrino oscillations raise the reaction rates of charged-current v-process reactions in the region outside oxygen-rich layers. The number …

Obstacle Avoidance For Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Brandon R. Call Sep 2006

Obstacle Avoidance For Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Brandon R. Call

Theses and Dissertations

Small UAVs are used for low altitude surveillance flights where unknown obstacles can be encountered. These UAVs can be given the capability to navigate in uncertain environments if obstacles are identified. This research presents an obstacle avoidance system for small UAVs. First, a mission waypoint path is created that avoids all known obstacles using a genetic algorithm. Then, while the UAV is in flight, obstacles are detected using a forward looking, onboard camera. Image features are found using the Harris Corner Detector and tracked through multiple video frames which provides three dimensional localization of the features. A sparse three dimensional …

A Spitzer Space Telescope Study Of Sn 2002hh: An Infrared Echo From A Type Iip Supernova, W. P. S. Meikle, S. Mattila, C. L. Gerardy, R. Kotak, M. Pozzo, S. D. Van Dyk, D. Farrah, R. A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present late-time (590-994 days) mid-IR photometry of the normal but highly reddened Type IIP supernova SN 2002hh. Bright, cool, slowly fading emission is detected from the direction of the supernova. Most of this flux appears not to be driven by the supernova event but instead probably originates in a cool, obscured star formation region or molecular cloud along the line of sight. We also show, however, that the declining component of the flux is consistent with an SN-powered IR echo from a dusty progenitor CSM. Mid-IR emission could also be coming from newly condensed dust and/or an ejecta/CSM impact, …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We have surveyed the ∼0.1-10 MeV nucleonˉ¹ abundances of heavy ions from ³He through Fe in 64 large solar energetic particle (LSEP) events observed on board the Advanced Composition Explorer from 1997 November through 2005 January. Our main results are (1) the 0.5-2.0 MeV nucleonˉ¹ ³He/⁴He ratio is enhanced between factors of ∼2-150 over the solar wind value in 29 (∼46%) events. (2) The Fe/O ratio in most LSEP events decreases with increasing energy up to ∼60 MeV nucleonˉ¹. (3) The Fe/O ratio is independent of CME speed, flare longitude, event size, the ³He/⁴He ratio, the pre-event Fe/O ratio, and …

Legal Consciousness And Contractual Obligations, Kojo Yelpaala Sep 2006

Legal Consciousness And Contractual Obligations, Kojo Yelpaala

ExpressO

The Article on “Legal Consciousness and Contractual Obligations” will explore and offer an explanation of the origins of the moral foundations for contractual obligations beyond conventional analysis. Building on themes and threads across many disciplines and theories, it seeks to identify and locate certain unities and common elements that explain human consciousness in exchange relations across cultures. The term contract is used in its non-technical and most inclusive sense to cover agreements, promises, undertakings and other forms of consensus whether or not supported by consideration. Viewed within this broad conceptual framework, where do human beings get the idea that they …

In-Cluster-Structured Exchange-Coupled Magnets With High Energy Densities, X. Rui, Jeffrey E. Shield, Zhiguang Sun, Yinfan Xu, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

In this letter, the authors demonstrate isotropic Fe–Pt exchange-spring nanocomposite permanent magnets with a soft magnetic phase fraction of greater than 0.5 with a coercivity of 6.5 kOe, single-phase-like magnetic behavior, and an energy product of 25.1 MG Oe. Sub-10-nm Fe–Pt clusters are formed with compositions in the two-phase Fe3Pt and FePt regions. Intracluster structuring on a scale of a few nanometers occurs after appropriate heat treatment. This ensures full exchange coupling between the two phases, allowing greater soft magnetic phase fractions. The results provide insight into developing high energy product nanostructured permanent magnets.

Cox Models With Nonlinear Effect Of Covariates Measured With Error: A Case Study Of Chronic Kidney Disease Incidence, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, Josef Coresh Sep 2006

Cox Models With Nonlinear Effect Of Covariates Measured With Error: A Case Study Of Chronic Kidney Disease Incidence, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, Josef Coresh

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We propose, develop and implement the simulation extrapolation (SIMEX) methodology for Cox regression models when the log hazard function is linear in the model parameters but nonlinear in the variables measured with error (LPNE). The class of LPNE functions contains but is not limited to strata indicators, splines, quadratic and interaction terms. The first order bias correction method proposed here has the advantage that it remains computationally feasible even when the number of observations is very large and multiple models need to be explored. Theoretical and simulation results show that the SIMEX method outperforms the naive method even with small …

Studies On Cyclooxygenase-1, Its Structure And Splice Variants, And Modulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 By Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And Novel Phytochemicals., Yibing Xu

Theses and Dissertations

Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are of important therapeutic value as they are the target site of aspirin-like drugs. Here I report nine new COX-1 splice variants in chapter 1, which I characterized with regard to heme-binding and other properties. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are co-inducible in many tissues following mitogenic and proinflammatory stimulation. In chapter 2, I investigate the physical and enzymatic properties of human COX-2 and iNOS and demonstrate that, despite reports to the contrary by another laboratory, they do not interact. The only reported COX-1 splice variant to exhibit cyclooxygenase activity has been isolated from …
