Determining Multiple Intelligences In The Preschool Aged Child, Jill Elizabeth Capie Sep 2006

Determining Multiple Intelligences In The Preschool Aged Child, Jill Elizabeth Capie

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research study was to explore whether valid Multiple Intelligence profiles could be created for preschool children. This study was conducted over a three month period and included 16 preschool-aged participants. Research strategies included surveys (teacher, paraprofessional, and parent), naturalistic observations, and participant interviews. There were four key findings in this study. First, the teacher, the paraprofessional, and the parents had differing perceptions about which intelligences were dominant for each participant. Second, participants appear to have multiple, equally dominant intelligences. Third, participant's views related to their own dominant intelligences frequently differed from those reported by the teacher, …

We report the measurements of Σ(1385) and Λ(1520) production in p+p and Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV from the STAR Collaboration. The yields and the pT spectra are presented and discussed in terms of chemical and thermal freeze-out conditions and compared to model predictions. Thermal and microscopic models do not adequately describe the yields of all the resonances produced in central Au+Au collisions. Our results indicate that there may be a time span between chemical and thermal freeze-out during which elastic hadronic interactions occur.

Planning For Robust Reserve Networks Using Uncertainty Analysis, Atte Moilanen, Michael C. Runge, Jane Elith, Andrew Tyre, Yohay Carmel, Eric Fegraus, Brendan A. Wintle, Mark Burgman, Yakov Ben-Haim

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Planning land-use for biodiversity conservation frequently involves computer-assisted reserve selection algorithms. Typically such algorithms operate on matrices of species presence–absence in sites, or on species-specific distributions ofmodel predicted probabilities of occurrence in grid cells. There are practically always errors in input data—erroneous species presence–absence data, structural and parametric uncertainty in predictive habitat models, and lack of correspondence between temporal presence and long-run persistence. Despite these uncertainties, typical reserve selection methods proceed as if there is no uncertainty in the data or models. Having two conservation options of apparently equal biological value, one would prefer the option whose value is relatively …

Elliptic And Circular Dichroism Effects In Two-Photon Double Ionization Of Atoms, Andrei Y. Istomin, Evgeny Pronin, N. L. Manakov, S.I. Marmo, Anthony F. Starace Sep 2006

Elliptic And Circular Dichroism Effects In Two-Photon Double Ionization Of Atoms, Andrei Y. Istomin, Evgeny Pronin, N. L. Manakov, S.I. Marmo, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

An ab initio parametrization of the two-photon double ionization amplitude from an s2 subshell of an atom in a 1S state is presented and used to predict two light polarization effects on photoelectron angular distributions that do not exist in single-photon double ionization: (i) elliptic dichroism and (ii) circular dichroism at equal energy sharing. Estimates for He show large magnitudes for these effects, which provide a means for polarization control of double ionization by vacuum ultraviolet light.

Performance Of Algebraic Multigrid For Parallelized Finite Element Dns/Les Solvers, Gregory James Larson Sep 2006

Performance Of Algebraic Multigrid For Parallelized Finite Element Dns/Les Solvers, Gregory James Larson

Theses and Dissertations

The implementation of a hybrid spectral/finite-element discretization on the unsteady, incompressible, Navier-Stokes equations with a semi-implicit time-stepping method, an explicit treatment of the advective terms, and an implicit treatment of the pressure and viscous terms leads to an algorithm capable of calculating 3D flows over complex 2D geometries. This also results in multiple Fourier mode linear systems which must be solved at every timestep, which naturally leads to two parallelization approaches: Fourier space partitioning, where each processor individually and simultaneously solves a linear system, and physical space partitioning, where all processors collectively solve each linear system, sequentially advancing through Fourier …

Search For Neutral Higgs Bosons Decaying To Tau Pairs In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1:96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

A search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons Φ decaying into τ+τ- final states in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV is presented. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 325 pb-1, were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Since no excess compared to the expectation from standard model processes is found, limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are set. The results are combined with those obtained from the D0 search for Φb(b̅) →bb̅b( …

Parents Involved & Meredith: A Prediction Regarding The (Un)Constitutionality Of Race-Conscious Student Assignment Plans, Eboni S. Nelson

ExpressO

During the October 2006 Term, the United States Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of voluntary race-conscious student assignment plans as employed in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No.1 and Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education. These cases will mark the Court’s first inquiry regarding the use of race to combat de facto segregation in public education. This article examines the constitutionality of such plans and provides a prediction regarding the Court’s decisions.

The article begins with an analysis of the resegregation trend currently plaguing American educational institutions and identifies two causes for the occurrence: …

Geometric Phase For N -Level Systems Through Unitary Integration, D. B. Uskov, A. R.P. Rau Sep 2006

Geometric Phase For N -Level Systems Through Unitary Integration, D. B. Uskov, A. R.P. Rau

Faculty Publications

Geometric phases are important in quantum physics and are now central to fault-tolerant quantum computation. For spin 1a•2, the Bloch sphere S2, together with a U(1) phase, provides a complete SU(2) description. We generalize to N -level systems and SU (N) in terms of a 2 (Na 1) -dimensional base space and reduction to a (Na 1) -level problem, paralleling closely the two-dimensional case. This iteratively solves the time evolution of an N -level system and gives (Na 1) geometric phases explicitly. A complete analytical construction of an S4 Bloch-like sphere for two qubits is given for the Spin(5) or …

Analysis Of A K-Out-Of-N System With Spares, Repairs, And A Probabilistic Rule, Srinivas R. Chakravarthy Sep 2006

Analysis Of A K-Out-Of-N System With Spares, Repairs, And A Probabilistic Rule, Srinivas R. Chakravarthy

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

We consider a k-out-of-N reliability system with identical components having exponential lifetimes. There is a single repairman who attends to failed components on a first comefirst-served basis. The repair times are assumed to be of phase type. The system has K spares that can be used according to a probabilistic rule to extend the lifetime of the system. The system is analyzed using Markov chain theory and some interesting results are obtained. A few illustrative numerical examples are discussed.
