Experimentally Derived Resistivity For Dielectric Samples From The Crres Internal Discharge Monitor, Nelson W. Green, A. Robb Frederickson, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Resistivity values were experimentally determined using charge-storage methods for six samples remaining from the construction of the internal discharge monitor flown on the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES). Three tests were performed over a period of three to five weeks each in a vacuum of ~5times10-6 torr with an average temperature of ~25degC to simulate a space environment. Samples tested included FR4, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and alumina with copper electrodes attached to one or more of the sample surfaces. FR4 circuit-board material was found to have a dark-current resistivity of ~1times1018 Omegamiddotcm and a moderately high polarization …

Effects Of Uncertainty In Climate Inputs On Simulated Evapotranspiration And Runoff In The Western Arctic, Michael A. Rawlins, Steve Frolking, Richard B. Lammers, Charles Vorosmarty Oct 2006

Effects Of Uncertainty In Climate Inputs On Simulated Evapotranspiration And Runoff In The Western Arctic, Michael A. Rawlins, Steve Frolking, Richard B. Lammers, Charles Vorosmarty

Earth Sciences

Hydrological models require accurate precipitation and air temperature inputs in order to adequately depict water fluxes and storages across Arctic regions. Biases such as gauge undercatch, as well as uncertainties in numerical weather prediction reanalysis data that propagate through water budget models, limit the ability to accurately model the terrestrial arctic water cycle. A hydrological model forced with three climate datasets and three methods of estimating potential evapotranspiration (PET) was used to better understand the impact of these processes on simulated water fluxes across the Western Arctic Linkage Experiment (WALE) domain. Climate data were drawn from the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis (NNR) …

Optimization Of Active Rendezvous Trajectories By Genetic Algorithms, Marie Emmanuelle Ricour Oct 2006

Optimization Of Active Rendezvous Trajectories By Genetic Algorithms, Marie Emmanuelle Ricour

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Trajectory optimization is and will remain a hot topic in the engineering field. Because analytical or exact solutions are often difficult and sometimes impossible to compute, there is a need for alternative and efficient methods. UnderWater Vehicles (UWV) trajectories and rendezvous trajectories of continuous low-thrust spacecraft are examined. One of the methods to solve such problems is the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. In this work, a GA has been developed using Matlab®. It treats possible solutions to the studied problems as individuals and eventually converges to an optimal or near optimal solution. Genetic Algorithms have been used previously to solve …

A Process For Producing Ice Coverage Marine Information Objects (Mios) In Iho S-57 Format, George Dias, David F. Coleman, Ahmed El-Rabbany, Benson Agi, Lee Alexander

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

While global warming may be opening up more Arctic waters in the summer, ice still infests key shipping lanes in the northern hemisphere during the winter months. To safely navigate these areas, mariners rely on daily ice coverage charts produced by national governmental agencies. Ice charts are primarily issued in paper format or as a fax. However, there is increased interest to ice coverage information on vessel navigation systems such as an Electronic Chart and Display Information Systems (ECDIS). However, to do so, the ice information must be provided as a separate layer of information to the Electronic Navigational Chart …

Propagation Velocities Of Chemical Reaction Fronts Advected By Poiseuille Flow, Boyd F. Edwards Oct 2006

Propagation Velocities Of Chemical Reaction Fronts Advected By Poiseuille Flow, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

Poiseuille flow between parallel plates advects chemical reaction fronts, distorting them and altering their propagation velocities. Analytical solutions of the cubic reaction-diffusion-advection equation resolve the chemical concentration for narrow gaps, wide gaps, and small-amplitude flow. Numerical solutions supply a general description for fluid flow in the direction of propagation of the chemical reaction front, and for flow in the opposite direction. Empirical relations for the velocity agree with numerical solutions to within a few percent, and agree exactly with the analytical limits. Applications to nonlinear fingering are discussed.

Rahner's Primordial Words And Bernstein's Metaphorical Leaps: The Affinity Of Art With Religion And Theology, Robert Masson Oct 2006

Rahner's Primordial Words And Bernstein's Metaphorical Leaps: The Affinity Of Art With Religion And Theology, Robert Masson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Karl Rahner's notion of primordial words and Leonard Bernstein's conception of music as intrinsically metaphorical are engaged to suggest that there is a fundamental affinity between artistic and religious imagination. The affinity is grounded, in part at least, in metaphoric process—an elemental cognitive act in which the human spirit is stretched so that its expressions can address what lies beyond them.

Timing Of Pair Production In Time-Dependent Force Fields, Christopher C. Gerry, Q Su, Rainer Grobe Oct 2006

Timing Of Pair Production In Time-Dependent Force Fields, Christopher C. Gerry, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

Faculty publications – Physics

We examine the creation and annihilation dynamics for electron-positron pairs in a time-dependent but subcritical electric force using a simplified model system. Numerical and semianalytical solutions to computational quantum field theory show that despite the continuity of the quantum field operator in time, the actual number of created particles can change in a discontinuous way if the field changes abruptly. The number of permanently created particles after the pulse, however, increases continuously with the duration of the electric field pulse, suggesting a transition from an exclusive annihilation to a creation regime.

Trends In Protection For Informational Works Under Copyright Law During The 19th And 20th Centuries, Miriam Bitton Oct 2006

Trends In Protection For Informational Works Under Copyright Law During The 19th And 20th Centuries, Miriam Bitton

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

The debate over databases protection has failed to identify and discuss some of its most basic and preliminary assumptions, accepting instead many of the historical aspects involved as given. This Article therefore seeks to challenge these underlying assumptions by providing a fresh look at the historical dimension of the debate. One common argument regarding database protection is that the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Feist v. Rural Publications Inc. brought about a dramatic change in the legal landscape, displacing the then-accepted "sweat of the brow" rationale for protecting rights in databases. This Article's historical analysis therefore thoroughly examines the treatment …

Major Forerunners To Honors Education At The Collegiate Level, Anne Rinn Oct 2006

Major Forerunners To Honors Education At The Collegiate Level, Anne Rinn

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In this paper, the author explores the major forerunners of the modern-day honors program as well as the purposes behind the formation of honors programs in the United States. Although given much attention in the 1920s with the work of Frank Aydelotte and again in the 1950s and 1960s with the work of Joseph Cohen, university honors programs and colleges have grown so rapidly over the past few decades that we sometimes forget our origins. By examining the foundations of honors programs, this history allows researchers and administrators to better understand modern honors programs in light of the past.

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

So, you have been asked to administer the honors program at your institution. You have no idea what it means since, for the past fifteen years, you have been teaching three sections of English composition and literature courses each semester. No one tells you that overnight you will have to become a public relations guru, an expert in planning and organization, a specialist in stretching a meager budget, a top-notch communicator and consensus builder, an effective fundraiser, and an authority on honors education.

Female Superintendents: Historic Barriers And Prospects For The Future, Stephen K. Miller, Youlanda C. Washington, Jeanna R. Fiene

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This paper addresses the historic under representation of female superintendents. The primary focus is the legacy of discrimination, in which the barriers to female advancement in a traditionally male field are described. Particular attention is given to three different models of male dominance that have been developed to explain how and/or why women have been excluded from top positions in educational administration. In part two, recognition of the importance of women's contributions to evolving theory in educational administration and a description of the feminine leadership model is offered, wherein women utilize flexible web-like structures, empower others, and prioritize children and …

York County Court Of Common Pleas, Jury Utilization And Representation Assessment, Paula Hannaford-Agor

Faculty Publications

In May 2006, the York County Office of Court Administration requested that the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) assess its jury management and utilization practices and make recommendations for improvement. The impetus for this request came from concerns both within the Office of Court Administration and from the Administrative Office of the Pennsylvania Courts that existing jury management practices make inefficient use of jurors, imposing excessive and unnecessary costs on the court and on the citizens who report for jury service. The York County Office of Court Administration also expressed concern that its jury pool may not adequately reflect …

Non-invasive drug delivery systems for therapeutic drugs are gaining prominence. One such system, the nasal delivery system, shows good prospect for effective delivery of some drugs, however, it is yet to be well established for others. The preparation of a reformulated drug and studying its in vitro characteristics is a crucial step in the process of adapting the new drug for nasal delivery systems. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of electrostatic layer by layer assembly of polyelectrolytes on PROMAXX®insulin microparticles and to study the chemical, physical and corresponding release properties of the resulting formulations. PROMAXX® …

Fluorescent Enzymatic Smart Tattoos Comprising Hybrid Silicate Microparticles, Metalloporphyrin Complexes, And Mass Transport-Limiting Nanofilms, Erich Wayne Stein

Doctoral Dissertations

Diabetics are often required to self-monitor blood glucose levels to effectively deliver prescribed therapies. However, the pain and bother associated with traditional finger-prick measurements often result in decreased patient compliance and therefore poor disease management, which could result in the early-onset of complications. Enzymatic "smart tattoos"—implantable luminescent particles that may be transdermally interrogated with light—are being pursued as minimally-invasive diabetic monitoring devices, with hopes of increasing diabetic compliance by reducing excessive pain and bother associated with finger-prick measurements. These devices typically comprise an oxygen-quenched luminescent dye and glucose oxidase (GOx), an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of β-D-glucose. Under glucose-limited …

Morphology Of The Near-Terminator Martian Ionosphere: A Comparison Of Models And Data, Jane L. Fox, Katherine E. Yeager

Physics Faculty Publications

We have constructed low and high solar activity models of the Martian thermosphere/ionosphere for solar zenith angles from 60 to 90° in 5 degree increments. The solar fluxes that we have adopted are those from the Solar 2000 v2.22 models of Tobiska (2004), without enhancements of the soft X-ray fluxes. The background neutral density and temperature profiles are similar to those that we have recently presented (Fox, 2004). We compute the density profiles for 14 ions and nine neutral species. For all the models, we present altitude profiles of the photoionization rates, electron impact ionization rates, total ion production rates, …
