Membrane Systems With Limited Parallelism, Bianca Daniela Popa Oct 2006

Membrane Systems With Limited Parallelism, Bianca Daniela Popa

Doctoral Dissertations

Membrane computing is an emerging research field that belongs to the more general area of molecular computing, which deals with computational models inspired from bio-molecular processes. Membrane computing aims at defining models, called membrane systems or P systems, which abstract the functioning and structure of the cell. A membrane system consists of a hierarchical arrangement of membranes delimiting regions, which represent various compartments of a cell, and with each region containing bio-chemical elements of various types and having associated evolution rules, which represent bio-chemical processes taking place inside the cell.

This work is a continuation of the investigations aiming to …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 14 - Aquatic Animal Health Subprogram: Development Of A National Translocation Policy Using Abalone And Prawns As Templates For Other Aquatic Species (Frdc Project No. 2004/080) Final Report, Brian Jones, Fran Stephens

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

The use of scientifically based hazard identification, risk analysis and risk management is fundamental to managing unwanted effects. Hazards, such as quarantine incursions, will continue to occur despite the use of risk assessment methodologies but the frequency and severity of their occurrence will be reduced.

This was recognised by the Ministerial Council on Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture in 1999 when they published the "National policy for the translocation of live aquatic organisms".

This FRDC project provides a simple risk assessment methodology based on the Australian Standard for Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360: 2004) and one that is consistent with the Ministerial …

The Phylogenetic Relationships And Biogeography Of True Porpoises (Mammalia: Phocoenidae) Based On Morphological Data, Liliana Fajardo-Mellor, Annalisa Berta, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Claudia Boy, R. Natalie Goodall Oct 2006

The Phylogenetic Relationships And Biogeography Of True Porpoises (Mammalia: Phocoenidae) Based On Morphological Data, Liliana Fajardo-Mellor, Annalisa Berta, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Claudia Boy, R. Natalie Goodall

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Prior studies of phylogenetic relationships among phocoenids based on morphology and molecular sequence data conflict and yield unresolved relationships among species. This study evaluates a comprehensive set of cranial, postcranial, and soft anatomical characters to infer interrelationships among extant species and several well-known fossil phocoenids, using two different methods to analyze polymorphic data: polymorphic coding and frequency step matrix. Our phylogenetic results confirmed phocoenid monophyly. The division of Phocoenidae into two subfamilies previously proposed was rejected, as well as the alliance of the two extinct genera Salumiphocaena and Piscolithax with Phocoena dioptrica and Phocoenoides dalli. Extinct phocoenids are basal …

High-Energy Product Exchange-Spring Fept/Fe Cluster Nanocomposite Permanent Magnets, X. Rui, Jeffrey E. Shield, Zhiguang Sun, Lanping Yue, Yinfan Xu, David J. Sellmyer, Z. Liu, D.J. Miller

David Sellmyer Publications

In this paper, we report on the production of Fe cluster/FePt matrix nanocomposite permanent magnets. Monodispersed Fe clusters with sizes below 10 nm were formed by gas aggregation techniques. These Fe clusters were imbedded in an FePt matrix by alternate deposition from two sources. Specimens with a range of Fe cluster phase content from 0 to 30 vol% were produced by controlling deposition times from each source. As-deposited FePt formed in the A1 structure; thus, post-deposition heat treatment was necessary to form the hard magnetic L10 FePt compound. A single-step heat treatment at 600 °C for 10 min leads …

Protcom: Searchable Database Of Protein Complexes Enhanced With Domain-Domain Structures, Petras Kundrotas, Emil Alexov

Publications

The database of protein complexes (PROTCOM) is a compilation of known 3D structures of protein–protein complexes enriched with artificially created domain–domain structures using the available entries in the Protein Data Bank. The domain–domain structures are generated by parsing single chain structures into loosely connected domains and are important features of the database. The database (http://www.ces.clemson.edu/compbio/protcom) could be used for benchmarking purposes of the docking and other algorithms for predicting 3D structures of protein–protein complexes. The database can be utilized as a template database in the homology or threading methods for modeling the 3D structures of unknown protein–protein complexes. …

Investigation Of Ethanol Dehydration In A Microscale Pervaporation Process, Sudhir Ramprasad Oct 2006

Investigation Of Ethanol Dehydration In A Microscale Pervaporation Process, Sudhir Ramprasad

Doctoral Dissertations

Challenges due to surface tension effects for vaporization in microchannels have restricted the implementation of conventional separation processes that involve liquid boiling in a micro-chemical system. However, membrane separations offer a feasible alternative for exploring the advantages of liquid phase separation in micro-chemical systems. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the process intensification effects in a microscale pervaporation process with experiments involving the separation of ethanol/water using a commercially available polymer dehydration membrane.

The microchannels in the microseparator were fabricated by the dry etch process at Louisiana Tech University. Microchannel depths of 20 to 120 μm, with …

Two Etudes On Combining Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty: Processing Correlations And Measuring Loss Of Privacy, Martine Ceberio, Gang Xiang, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Daniel Berleant

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, there is a need to combine interval and probabilistic uncertainty. The need for such a combination leads to two types of problems: (1) how to process the given combined uncertainty, and (2) how to gauge the amount of uncertainty and -- a related question -- how to best decrease this uncertainty. In our research, we concentrate on these two types of problems. In this paper, we present two examples that illustrate how the corresponding problems can be solved.

Evolution Of The Electron Yield Curves Of Insulators As A Function Of Impinging Electron Fluence And Energy, John R. Dennison, Alec Sim, Clint Thomson Oct 2006

Evolution Of The Electron Yield Curves Of Insulators As A Function Of Impinging Electron Fluence And Energy, John R. Dennison, Alec Sim, Clint Thomson

All Physics Faculty Publications

Electron emission and concomitant charge accumulation near the surface of insulators is central to understanding spacecraft charging. A study of changes in electron emission yields as a result of internal charge buildup due to electron dose is presented. Evolution of total, backscattered, and secondary yield results over a broad range of incident energies are presented for two representative insulators, Kapton and Al2O3. Reliable yield curves for uncharged insulators are measured, and quantifiable changes in yields are observed due to <100-fC/mm2 fluences. Excellent agreement with a phenomenological argument based on insulator charging predicted by the yield curve …

The Law Of Other States, Eric A. Posner, Cass R. Sunstein Oct 2006

The Law Of Other States, Eric A. Posner, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

The question of whether courts should consult the laws of "other states" has produced intense controversy. But in some ways, this practice is entirely routine; within the United States, state courts regularly consult the decisions of other state courts in deciding on the common law, the interpretation of statutory law, and even the meaning of state constitutions. A formal argument in defense of such consultation stems from the Condorcet Jury Theorem, which says that under certain conditions, a widespread belief accepted by a number of independent actors, is highly likely to be correct. It follows that if a large majority …

Modeling Of Bathymetry-Locked Residual Eddies In Well-Mixed Tidal Channels With Arbitrary Depth Variations, Chunyan Li Oct 2006

Modeling Of Bathymetry-Locked Residual Eddies In Well-Mixed Tidal Channels With Arbitrary Depth Variations, Chunyan Li

Faculty Publications

The concept of the in-out-type exchange flow in estuaries only applies to situations with significant freshwater discharge and/or elongated channels with relatively simple variations in depth and coastline along the channel. In waterways with complex bottom topography, the in-out-type exchange flows may be replaced by residual eddies that are locked to bathymetry. This paper develops an analytic model for such tidally induced residual eddies. The model allows arbitrary depth variations in both along- and across-channel directions. The model produces residual eddies locked to bathymetry features, similar to observations in Wassaw Sound using a ship-mounted ADCP. Analysis indicates that for problems …

Alstroemeria, Aileen Reid Oct 2006

Alstroemeria, Aileen Reid

Bulletins 4000 -

About 60 species of Alstroemeria grow wild in South America, in habitats ranging from the snowline of the Andes and high mountain plateaus down through the highland forests to the coastal deserts.

A member of the lily family, Alstroemeria grows from a rhizome that also develops tuberous storage outgrowths and fleshy roots. The aerial shoots can be either vegetative or reproductive. Normally shoots that have unfolded more than 30 leaves will not flower and remain vegetative.

The leaves of Alstroemeria are unusual in that they rotate through 180 degrees as they unfold, so that the upper surface becomes the lower …

A Mathematical Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Prion Proliferation, Meredith L. Greer, Laurent Pujo-Menjouet, Glenn F. Webb

All Faculty Scholarship

How do the normal prion protein (PrP(C)) and infectious prion protein (PrP(Sc)) populations interact in an infected host? To answer this question, we analyse the behavior of the two populations by studying a system of differential equations. The system is constructed under the assumption that PrP(Sc) proliferates using the mechanism of nucleated polymerization. We prove that with parameter input consistent with experimentally determined values, we obtain the persistence of PrP(Sc). We also prove local stability results for the disease steady state, and a global stability result for the disease free steady state. Finally, we give numerical simulations, which are confirmed …
