A Decentralized Reinforcement Learning Controller For Collaborative Driving, Luke Ng, Christopher M. Clark, Jan P. Huissoon Oct 2006

A Decentralized Reinforcement Learning Controller For Collaborative Driving, Luke Ng, Christopher M. Clark, Jan P. Huissoon

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Research in the collaborative driving domain strives to create control systems that coordinate the motion of multiple vehicles in order to navigate traffic both efficiently and safely. In this paper a novel individual vehicle controller based on reinforcement learning is introduced. This controller is capable of both lateral and longitudinal control while driving in a multi-vehicle platoon. The design and development of this controller is discussed in detail and simulation results showing learning progress and performance are presented.

Crude Cumulative Incidence In The Form Of A Horvitz-Thompson Like And Kaplan-Meier Like Estimator, Laura Antolini, Elia Mario Biganzoli, Patrizia Boracchi Oct 2006

Crude Cumulative Incidence In The Form Of A Horvitz-Thompson Like And Kaplan-Meier Like Estimator, Laura Antolini, Elia Mario Biganzoli, Patrizia Boracchi

COBRA Preprint Series

The link between the nonparametric estimator of the crude cumulative incidence of a competing risk and the Kaplan-Meier estimator is exploited. The equivalence of the nonparametric crude cumulative incidence to an inverse-probability-of-censoring weighted average of the sub-distribution function is proved. The link between the estimation of crude cumulative incidence curves and Gray's family of nonparametric tests is considered. The crude cumulative incidence is proved to be a Kaplan-Meier like estimator based on the sub-distribution hazard, i.e. the quantity on which Gray's family of tests is based. A standard probabilistic formalism is adopted to have a note accessible to applied statisticians.

Parallel Randomized State-Space Search, Matthew B. Dwyer, Sebastian Elbaum, Suzette Person, Rahul Purandare Oct 2006

Parallel Randomized State-Space Search, Matthew B. Dwyer, Sebastian Elbaum, Suzette Person, Rahul Purandare

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Model checkers search the space of possible program behaviors to detect errors and to demonstrate their absence. Despite major advances in reduction and optimization techniques, state-space search can still become cost-prohibitive as program size and complexity increase. In this paper, we present a technique for dramatically improving the cost-effectiveness of state-space search techniques for error detection using parallelism. Our approach can be composed with all of the reduction and optimization techniques we are aware of to amplify their benefits. It was developed based on insights gained from performing a large empirical study of the cost-effectiveness of randomization techniques in state-space …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The Gambian giant pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus) is a large rodent that has established a breeding population in the Florida Keys. Should it successfully disperse to mainland Florida, it could continue spreading through much of North America where significant negative ecological and agricultural consequences could result. We rapidly developed the information for implementing an efficient and successful eradication program before dispersal to the mainland occurs. This included development of monitoring and indexing methods and their application to define the animal’s range, the development of baits attractive to Gambian giant pouched rats, efficacy testing of toxicants, and development of …

West Nile Virus Antibody Prevalence In Red-Winged Blackbirds (Agelaius Phoeniceus) From North Dakota, Usa (2003-2004), Heather Sullivan, George M. Linz, Larry Clark, Mo Salman Oct 2006

West Nile Virus Antibody Prevalence In Red-Winged Blackbirds (Agelaius Phoeniceus) From North Dakota, Usa (2003-2004), Heather Sullivan, George M. Linz, Larry Clark, Mo Salman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

This study was designed to explore the role that red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) may have played in disseminating West Nile virus (WNV) across the United States. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays designed to detect WNV antibodies in avian species we were able to determine the WNV antibody prevalence in a cohort of red-winged blackbirds in central North Dakota in 2003 and 2004. The peak WNV antibody prevalence was 22.0% in August of 2003 and 18.3% in July of 2004. The results of this study suggest that red-winged blackbird migratory populations may be an important viral dispersal mechanism with the …

Lyapunov Functions For Tuberculosis Models With Fast And Slow Progression, C. Connell Mccluskey Oct 2006

Lyapunov Functions For Tuberculosis Models With Fast And Slow Progression, C. Connell Mccluskey

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The spread of tuberculosis is studied through two models which include fast and slow progression to the infected class. For each model, Lyapunov functions are used to show that when the basic reproduction number is less than or equal to one, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, and when it is greater than one there is an endemic equilibrium which is globally asymptotically stable.

Can Two Planar Sources With The Same Sets Of Stokes Parameters Generate Beams With Different Degrees Of Polarization?, Mohamed Salem, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf Oct 2006

Can Two Planar Sources With The Same Sets Of Stokes Parameters Generate Beams With Different Degrees Of Polarization?, Mohamed Salem, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf

Physics Articles and Papers

It is shown that two stochastic electromagnetic beams that propagate from the source plane z=0 into the half-space z>0 may have different degrees of polarization throughout the half-space, even though they have the same sets of Stokes parameters in the source plane. This fact is due to a possible difference in the coherence properties of the field in that plane, but other reasons are also possible. The result is illustrated by an example.

Fantasy Sports And The Right Of Publicity: A Case For Viewing Dissemination Of Player Statistics As Fair Use Of The News, David L. Pratt Ii Oct 2006

Fantasy Sports And The Right Of Publicity: A Case For Viewing Dissemination Of Player Statistics As Fair Use Of The News, David L. Pratt Ii

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment argues that the use of player names and statistics in the fantasy sports context should be granted a narrow exemption from the "right of publicity" doctrine because such use is essentially no more than news reporting. Part II examines the evolution of fantasy baseball from its humble origins and explosive growth to the legal debate that presently surrounds it. Parts III and IV seek to demonstrate why the crux of the dispute turns on the rights to player names, and not on ownership of the actual statistics. Part V examines the development of the right of publicity doctrine …

A Classification Of Certain Maximal Subgroups Of Symmetric Groups, Benjamin Newton, Bret Benesh Oct 2006

A Classification Of Certain Maximal Subgroups Of Symmetric Groups, Benjamin Newton, Bret Benesh

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Problem 12.82 of the Kourovka Notebook asks for all ordered pairs (n,m) such that the symmetric group Sn embeds in Sm as a maximal subgroup. One family of such pairs is obtained when m=n+1. Kalužnin and Klin [L.A. Kalužnin, M.H. Klin, Certain maximal subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups, Math. Sb. 87 (1972) 91–121] and Halberstadt [E. Halberstadt, On certain maximal subgroups of symmetric or alternating groups, Math. Z. 151 (1976) 117–125] provided an additional infinite family. This paper answers the Kourovka question by producing a third infinite family of ordered …

Cooling Of The Quasi-Persistent Neutron Star X-Ray Transients Ks 1731-260 And Mxb 1659-29, Edward M. Cackett, Rudy Wijnands, Manuel Linares, Jon M. Miller, Jeroen Homan, Walter H. G. Lewin Oct 2006

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

We present Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations that monitor the neutron star cooling of the quasi-persistent neutron star X-ray transients KS 1731-260 and MXB 1659-29 for approximately 4 yr after these sources returned to quiescence from prolonged outbursts. In both sources the outbursts were long enough to significantly heat the neutron star crust out of thermal equilibrium with the core. We analyse the X-ray spectra by fitting absorbed neutron star atmosphere models to the observations. The results of our analysis strengthen the preliminary findings of Wijnands et al. that in both sources the neutron star crust cools down very rapidly …

Multiobjective Optimization Problems With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich Oct 2006

Multiobjective Optimization Problems With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to new applications of advanced tools of modern variational analysis and generalized differentiation to the study of broad classes of multiobjective optimization problems subject to equilibrium constraints in both finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional settings. Performance criteria in multiobjectivejvector optimization are defined by general preference relationships satisfying natural requirements, while equilibrium constraints are described by parameterized generalized equations/variational conditions in the sense of Robinson. Such problems are intrinsically nonsmooth and are handled in this paper via appropriate normal/coderivativejsubdifferential constructions that exhibit full calculi. Most of the results obtained are new even in finite dimensions, while the case of …

Australian Students Achievement In The Timss 2002 Mathematics Cognitive Domains, Sue Thomson Oct 2006

Australian Students Achievement In The Timss 2002 Mathematics Cognitive Domains, Sue Thomson

TIMSS Australia Monograph Series

The TIMSS assessment materials are organised on the basis of two domains: a content domain and a cognitive domain. The content domain describes the content that is intended to be assessed; while the cognitive domain describes the cognitive abilities students use to answer the items. The content domains are fairly consistently and readily found in the curricula of the participating countries, and are the subject of the major international and national reports for TIMSS. Developing reliable and valid achievement scales for the cognitive domains is not as straightforward, and differences among students across and within countries in their mathematical knowledge …
