Australian Students Achievement In The Timss 2002 Mathematics Cognitive Domains, Sue Thomson Oct 2006

Australian Students Achievement In The Timss 2002 Mathematics Cognitive Domains, Sue Thomson

TIMSS Australia Monograph Series

The TIMSS assessment materials are organised on the basis of two domains: a content domain and a cognitive domain. The content domain describes the content that is intended to be assessed; while the cognitive domain describes the cognitive abilities students use to answer the items. The content domains are fairly consistently and readily found in the curricula of the participating countries, and are the subject of the major international and national reports for TIMSS. Developing reliable and valid achievement scales for the cognitive domains is not as straightforward, and differences among students across and within countries in their mathematical knowledge …

Methods For Resistivity Measurements Related To Spacecraft Charging, John R. Dennison, Jerilyn Brunson, Prasanna Swaminathan, Nelson Green, A. Robb Frederickson Oct 2006

Methods For Resistivity Measurements Related To Spacecraft Charging, John R. Dennison, Jerilyn Brunson, Prasanna Swaminathan, Nelson Green, A. Robb Frederickson

All Physics Faculty Publications

A key parameter in modeling differential spacecraft-charging is the resistivity of insulating materials. This parameter determines how charge will accumulate and redistribute across the spacecraft, as well as the timescale for charge transport and dissipation. American Society for Testing and Materials constant-voltage methods are shown to provide inaccurate resistivity measurements for materials with resistivities greater than ~1017 Omegamiddotcm or with long polarization decay times such as are found in many polymers. These data have been shown to often be inappropriate for spacecraft-charging applications and have been found to underestimate charging effects by one to four orders of magnitude for …

On The Computation Of Secondary Electron Emission Models, Sebastien Clerc, John R. Dennison, Ryan Hoffmann, Jonathon Abbott Oct 2006

On The Computation Of Secondary Electron Emission Models, Sebastien Clerc, John R. Dennison, Ryan Hoffmann, Jonathon Abbott

All Physics Faculty Publications

Secondary electron emission is a critical contributor to the charge particle current balance in spacecraft charging. Spacecraft charging simulation codes use a parameterized expression for the secondary electron (SE) yield delta(Eo) as a function of the incident electron energy Eo. Simple three-step physics models of the electron penetration, transport, and emission from a solid are typically expressed in terms of the incident electron penetration depth at normal incidence R(Eo) and the mean free path of the SE lambda. In this paper, the authors recall classical models for the range R(Eo): a power …

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach Oct 2006

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Differentiated instruction (DI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are philosophies that serve as teaching methodologies that address the needs of diverse learners in the regular classroom. Furthermore, DI can be used to engage students in instruction through different modalities, appeal to different interests, and use varied rates of instruction along with varied degrees of complexity. Also, UDL is an extension of DI, wherein the teacher provides alternatives that are built into the curriculum and suitable for most students. Additionally, the UDL model can be supported by the six principles of effective curriculum (Kame'emui & Simmons, 1999) to design curricular …

Social Security: From Then To Now, 70 Years Of Growth, Patricia Miller Selvy

Accounting Historians Notebook

Today, just as in 1935, there appears to be a fundamental belief in American society that those who have worked and made contributions into a retirement system should have some assurance that they will not be left unprotected by our government once they have reached an age where they cannot work. The problem we are facing as a society is one of determining how to offer retirees income protection while not taxing our shrinking working population too heavily. There are many proposals being debated on how to fix the system, but before decisions are made on how to restructure our …

The Exact Distribution Of The Multilook Magnitude, Saralees Nadarajah, Samuel Kotz Oct 2006

The Exact Distribution Of The Multilook Magnitude, Saralees Nadarajah, Samuel Kotz

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Gierull provides a statistical analysis of multilook synthetic aperture radar interferograms. Various expressions for the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, and the moments of associated statistics are derived. It appears, however, that most of these expressions are based on some approximation. In this letter, the corresponding expressions are derived in their exact form, including some elementary representations for certain expressions given by Gierull. A numerical comparison of the exact and approximate expressions is provided.

A Simple Electric Field Probe In A Gauss's Law Laboratory, Daniel O. Ludwigsen, Gregory N. Hassold

Physics Publications

Early in our calculus-based introductory course, students are introduced to electric fields and sometimes struggle with the abstraction of a vector field. They have less familiarity with the phenomena associated with electric fields, and the connection between phenomena and mathematical formalism is weaker. Our very next topic is Gauss's law.

Entropy Conserving Probability Transforms And The Entailment Principle, Ronald R. Yager, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2006

Entropy Conserving Probability Transforms And The Entailment Principle, Ronald R. Yager, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Our main result here is the development of a general procedure for transforming some initial probability distribution into a new probability distribution in a way that the resulting distribution has entropy at least as great as the original distribution. A significant aspect of our approach is that it makes use of the Zadeh's entailment principle which is itself a general procedure for going from an initial possibility distribution to a new possibility distribution so that the resulting possibility has an uncertainty at least as great of the original.

Certifications Offered By Cost Estimating Organizations, Donald S. Remer, Karen M. Ahle, Kevin J. Alley, John Silny, Karen Hsin

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

There has been an increasing trend in professional and engineering circles to place greater emphasis on official credentials. These credentials commonly come in the form of certificates – documented recognition by a professional body that an engineer or other professional has the qualifications and technical knowledge to be a practitioner in that field. These certificates are somewhat analogous to merit badges in scouting – the certification is evidence that the holder has a certain minimum level of competence in the subject area. This review will help you decide what certifications are applicable to you and the requirements to obtain a …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

This paper reports the observation and characterization of a spheromak formed in the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX, [M. R. Brown, Phys. Plasmas 6, 1717 (1999)]) and trapped in a simple dipole magnetic field. The spheromak is studied in a prolate (tilt unstable) 0.4 m diameter, 0.6 m length copper flux conserver in SSX. This plasma does not tilt, despite the prolate flux conserver. The spheromak is characterized by a suite of magnetic probe arrays for magnetic structure B(r,t), ion Doppler spectroscopy for T-i and flow, and interferometry for n(e). Three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations of this configuration verify its gross sta-bility. (c) …

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish: The Economic And Environmental Impacts Of Commercial Fishing, Jessica Glenn

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Fish and fisheries play an important role in the Amazon River Basin. Fishing provides jobs to people of both urban and rural communities, and fish are a major source of protein in people’s diets and a major part of the Amazon River ecosystem. In recent years commercial fishing has increased due to greater access to both domestic and international markets, and government incentives which have helped fishermen obtain better equipment and boats. The purpose of this study is to observe the Belém Ver-O-Peso fish market and interview fisherman about different aspects of commercial fishing (what species of fish were caught, …
