Anacrograms 2: Acronyms; Singles; Phrases

Word Ways

Anacrograms, introduced in May, are anagrams of acrostics of text. Here are numerous examples from common idioms and saying. (Part 3 will be from quotations.) I occasionally cheated by modifying the wording slightly, obviously or unobtrusively. The most interesting anacrograms logologically are spelled without rearrangement. I call these acronyms. They are anacrograms in the sense that charades and half-palindromes are anagrams.

All-Diagonal Six-Squares With Familiar Words, Rex Gooch Aug 2006

All-Diagonal Six-Squares With Familiar Words, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

I have previously attempted to find word squares with words as diagonals for squares of order 9, 8, and 7. As the order of the square decreases, it becomes possible to use more familiar words. The six rows and three diagonals of six-squares make nine words: in all the examples in this article, the majority of the nine words are in the most-used 87,000 words (British National Corpus): in the square, just two words do not appear in the top 87,000.

Some Narrative Alphametics, James Mayfield Aug 2006

Some Narrative Alphametics, James Mayfield

Word Ways

In an alphametic, letters are substituted for numbers in an arithmetic problem, and the reader is invited to find the solution. If the letters spell out some sort of a message, so much the better; the oldest one known, SEND + MORE = MONEY, was crafted by H.E. Dudeney in 1924. (The term alphametic was coined by J.A.H. Hunter in 1955.)

Spoonertoons 3: The "Eek!" Shall Inherit The Mirth, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

As an annual tradition, one we trust is much anticipated, we present a new set of original spoonerisms rendered into visual form. This is the third consecutive August issue of Word Ways in which our collaborative feature has appeared. By the way, although it's a few weeks too late to send him a card, July 22 was Dr. Spooner's 162nd birthday.

The Great Times Ten-Square Hoax, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

When i was at University, I ran my college debating society, and was contacted by the best-known columnist of one of the two serious Sunday newspapers in the UK (in the UK, the major papers are national in circulation). He told me to ring him, reversing the charges, no matter how late, to let him know the result of a particular debate. I did so, to be met with a very curt dismissal, because the vote did not support his view.

Did You Write A Shakespearean Sonnet?, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2006

Did You Write A Shakespearean Sonnet?, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

One can divide humanity into two groups - those who can be identified as the real author of a Shakespearean sonnet, and those who cannot. Willard Espy revealed in his book The World's Gotten Out (Clarkson Potter, 1989) the method of establishing authorship: look for the first letter of a name anywhere in the first line of a given sonnet, the second letter of the name anywhere in the second line of the same sonnet, and so on until the full name is spelled out. Sure enough, Willard Espy appears in Sonnet 114.

Learning To Advocate For Educational Equity In A Teacher Credential Program, Steven Z. Athanases, Kathleen J. Martin

Ethnic Studies

Drawing on a 5-year program-wide investigation of ways preservice teachers learn to teach to diversity, this study uses focus groups of graduates to illuminate survey results of their feeling well prepared to advocate for equity in classrooms and schools. Offering suggestions for improvement, graduates nonetheless reported two broad categories of program strength. The first was the value of infusion of culture, language, and equity content in coursework. Themes in strong coursework included focus on culturally responsive, equity-focused pedagogy; preparation to teach English language learners; developing cultural knowledge and sensitivity; and learning advocacy beyond the classroom. Faculty taught and modeled these …

Reversible Seven-Squares, Rex Gooch Aug 2006

Reversible Seven-Squares, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

A reversible word square is one in which every row can be read backwards, and every column upwards - see especially the examples in the second section below. Every word must be either a reversible word such as REVILER (RELIVER in reverse) or a palindrome, which is a special kind of reversible word. In this article, the term reversible word does not include palindromes. In general, counts include valid rotations and reflections.

My Best Canadian Place Name Transadditions, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

In "50 Best Canadian Place-Names" in the February 2004 Word Ways, we offered a list of Canadian place name transpositions. Here we present a list of 69 Canadian place names for which there are 200 transadditions. We chose to limit the list of 200 but we could have found further examples. We also could have increased the number of place names, but the lengths would have begun to fall below the nine-letter level.

The Green World Of Dystopian Fiction, Martin Hensley Aug 2006

The Green World Of Dystopian Fiction, Martin Hensley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Northrop Frye was the first theorist to develop the green world archetype; Frye used the term to refer to a recurring motif in Shakespearean comedy. In several of Shakespeare's comedies, the protagonists leave the civilized world and venture into the green world, or nature, to escape from the irrational law of society, which is the case in such comedies as As You Like It and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Elements of the green world can also be found in Shakespearean tragedy, where the natural retreat serves as a temporary escape for the protagonists. Such a green world exists in three …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Khmer Refugees In Three Massachusetts Communities, Leakhena Nou

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

This paper uses a sociological stress process model to explore the Khmer adult refugees’ experience in Massachusetts. The analysis is based on the responses of three focus groups in the Khmer communities of Lowell, Lynn, and Revere, Massachusetts. The focus groups provided an in-depth understanding of sources of stress, stress mediators, and psychosocial adjustment/adaptational patterns for Khmer refugees who had experienced the Cambodian genocide. Symptoms and reactions associated with underlying causes of mental health problems had culturally specific relevance to physical illness and mental health.

Immigration, Assimilation, And Language : A Case Study Of Esl Programs In Louisville, Kentucky., Korey David Mcmurtrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the structure and processes of several different organizations that offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in one Kentucky county. The purpose of the study was to analyze the structure of the organizations, and then analyze how the structure affects their approach to teaching ESL. There were three expectations going into this study: the ESL programs would be segregated and distinct from one another, they would be challenged to teach a diverse clientele, and the services would be strongly student-oriented. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six program coordinators and two teachers across six different organizations. The …

The project brief fell into two main sections. The first was to conduct a literature review examining: (a) Current accreditation and course approval policies and practices in Australia to identify similarities and differences and implications for a national accreditation system; (b) Developments in the accreditation of teacher education programs in other countries and whether any of the identified approaches could provide a basis for a national …

In order to do this, members of the CTNSP staff traveled to these areas to gather firsthand information relating to this problem.

Bad Faith: Race, Religion And The Reformation Of Welfare Law, Richard Hardack Aug 2006

Bad Faith: Race, Religion And The Reformation Of Welfare Law, Richard Hardack

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article critically examines the cultural, theological, and legal underpinnings of welfare policies in the United States, arguing that these policies are deeply influenced by racialized and gendered stereotypes. It contends that conservative and liberal thinkers alike have framed welfare as a threat to capitalist values, often justifying this stance through theological and postmodernist ideas. The analysis highlights how welfare is constructed as a declaration of dependence, contradicting the ideals of self-reliance and market-driven solutions. The article also critiques the legal system for failing to recognize welfare as a fundamental right, instead treating it as a privilege subject to state …

Democracy By Any Other Name Just Isn't The Same, Clarissa Estep Aug 2006

Democracy By Any Other Name Just Isn't The Same, Clarissa Estep

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Democracy has been one of the fundamental achievements in the post-World War II era. Because evidence of the democratic peace exists, illiberal states are being pressured to form democracies. However, democratic consolidation, on which the democratic peace relies, remains a persistent problem of the Third World. Thus, the paradox remains that democratizing states are prone to violence which undermines peace and security. Considering that the majority of states in the international community are mixed regimes, or anocracies, this poses a problem for reducing interstate and intrastate conflict in these regimes. It is not enough to declare success with the establishment …

Mean Length Of Utterance In Children With Specific Language Impairment And In Younger Control Children Shows Concurrent Validity And Stable And Parallel Growth Trajectories, Mabel L. Rice, Sean M. Redmond, Lesa Hoffman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Purpose: Although mean length of utterance (MLU) is a useful benchmark in studies of children with specific language impairment (SLI), some empirical and interpretive issues are unresolved. The authors report on 2 studies examining, respectively, the concurrent validity and temporal stability of MLU equivalency between children with SLI and typically developing children. Method: Study 1 used 124 archival conversational samples consisting of 39 children with SLI (age 5;0 [years;months]), 40 MLU-equivalent typically developing children (age 3;0), and 45 age-equivalent controls. Concurrent validity of MLU matches was examined by considering the correspondence between MLU and developmental sentence scoring (DSS), …
