American Reeducation Of German Pows, 1943-1946., Pamela Croley Aug 2006

American Reeducation Of German Pows, 1943-1946., Pamela Croley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States held almost 500,000 enemy combatants within her borders during World War II. Out of those 500,000 men, 380,000 were from Nazi Germany. Nazi POWs were confined to camps built near small rural towns in almost every state. It was not something that was well known to the American public. Even less known was the American Military's effort, through reeducation, to introduce Hitler's soldiers to a new political ideology-democracy. This thesis will explore how the reeducation program was formed; examine the people, both German and American, who participated in it, and make a determination on whether or not …

Why Don’T More Public Schools Teach Sex Education? A Constitutional Explanation And Critique, Jesse R. Merriam Aug 2006

Why Don’T More Public Schools Teach Sex Education? A Constitutional Explanation And Critique, Jesse R. Merriam

ExpressO

This Article questions why so many public schools do not teach any form of sex education. The answer proposed in this Article is that the U.S. Constitution is a part of the problem. This claim is based on the following two premises: (1) the U.S. Constitution certainly does not require public schools to teach sex education; and (2) the U.S. Constitution arguably requires public schools that teach sex education to exempt those students whose religious beliefs are substantially burdened by sex education.

To illustrate how these two premises might weigh in a school district’s decision not to teach sex education, …

Guilty Pleasures: Narrative Craft And Mass Appeal In The Newgate Calendar, Aimee Rust Aug 2006

Guilty Pleasures: Narrative Craft And Mass Appeal In The Newgate Calendar, Aimee Rust

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Newgate Calendar, one of the earliest true crime documents, has rarely been studied. This paper aims to demonstrate that these texts illuminate various aspects of the culture that both produced and consumed the narratives the Calendar contains. In particular, I have focused on two different categories of crimes against the body. The Calendar's early volumes, which were published while state-sponsored punishment was still a public spectacle, offer several accounts that deal with the confinement and torture of living victims. Later volumes do not include torture narratives. Instead, anxiety over the treatment of dead bodies caused an increased interest in …

Renegotiating Democracy In Public Space, Anna Brand Aug 2006

Renegotiating Democracy In Public Space, Anna Brand

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Dissent is intricately linked to the qualities of public space. While the First Amendment protects dissent, historical legal and social mechanisms have regulated protest and its relationship with public space. In the latter half of the twentieth century, a rigorous legal framework has emerged to both protect and regulate protest. Yet free speech rights are highly contested. The media are complicit in relating protesters to violence. This perception has been thoroughly constructed in the media since the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in 1999. The September 11th terrorist attacks have further amplified concerns for security in public spaces. The …

Looting, Law, And Lawlessness, Stuart Green Aug 2006

Looting, Law, And Lawlessness, Stuart Green

ExpressO

As recent incidents in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and other natural and man-made disasters have illustrated, the moral content of looting spans an extraordinarily wide continuum: At one end are predatory and exploitative acts that seem deserving of even greater punishment than ordinary acts of burglary and larceny. At the other end are cases of necessity, involving otherwise law-abiding citizens who, as a result of forces beyond their control, find themselves hungry and exposed to the elements. In between these two poles lies a wide range of conduct that often involves impoverished and alienated citizens living on the edges …

Confronting The Genericism Conundrum, Sandra L. Rierson, Deven R. Desai Aug 2006

Confronting The Genericism Conundrum, Sandra L. Rierson, Deven R. Desai

ExpressO

Recent lawsuits and articles have drawn attention to a growing issue in intellectual property law, the aggressive and arguably abusive tactics of intellectual property (“IP”) rights holders. In the trademark context, some maintain and there are arguments to support the idea that trademark holders bring these actions as a means of manipulating the public through direct control of the public’s ability to use language. Nonetheless, assuming trademark holders and their counsel are acting at some level of good faith and are rational, something else in the law itself may be driving this otherwise questionable behavior. This paper argues that the …

Justice Thomas' Kelo Dissent, Or, "History As A Grab Bag Of Principles", David L. Breau Aug 2006

Justice Thomas' Kelo Dissent, Or, "History As A Grab Bag Of Principles", David L. Breau

ExpressO

In Kelo v. City of New London, the Supreme Court held 5-4 that creating jobs and increasing tax revenues satisfy the Fifth Amendment’s requirement that property be "taken for public use." Justice Thomas joined the dissenters, but authored a separate opinion arguing that the Public Use Clause was originally understood as a substantive limitation that allowed the government to take property only if the government owns, or the public actually uses, the taken property. This article demonstrates that much of the historical evidence that Justice Thomas provides in his dissent to support a narrow original understanding of public use in …

Increasing The Social Connection Between Immigrant English Language Learners, School Staff, And Peers In The High School Setting, Gretchen Johnson Griffey Aug 2006

Increasing The Social Connection Between Immigrant English Language Learners, School Staff, And Peers In The High School Setting, Gretchen Johnson Griffey

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

An Immigrant English Language Learner (ELL) encounters many new and different experiences when they enter high school. This transition can lead to a sense of loneliness and isolation if the student is not comfortable. However, if ELLs feel welcomed, valued, and connected to others, the high school experience can be a positive one. This research project was designed to use a personal presentation learning tool as a way to establish a needed social connection between ELLs, school staff, and native speaking peers as a way to enhance personal relationships, promote cultural understanding, and connect students to their new setting.

Revamping The Classroom: Improving The Education Of Students With Disabilities, Kathryn M. Lynn Aug 2006

Revamping The Classroom: Improving The Education Of Students With Disabilities, Kathryn M. Lynn

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A teacher in-service presentation was developed that sought to improve the education of students with disabilities through teacher communication and education about pertinent strategies. The program presented is titled "Agreed To Succeed". The "Agreed To Succeed" program is based upon the three I's: (a) initiating communication, (b) integrating learning, and (c) incorporating strategies. In the presentation, teachers were offered an approach to opening communication among teachers, students, and staff. Additionally, strategies were presented to encourage teachers to modify curriculum for their students with disabilities in their classrooms.

Differentiated Teacher Training For Differentiated Instruction, Kristi Steele Aug 2006

Differentiated Teacher Training For Differentiated Instruction, Kristi Steele

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Gifted, bright, unusual, struggling, and special education students are all intermixed in classrooms today. As a result, teachers are expected to differentiate their instruction to meet the varying needs of these students. Unfortunately, the training teachers receive is often inadequate. Experienced and inexperienced teachers have different needs. In this project, the author attempted to solve this problem by designing a staff development workshop that is broken into two sections. The first section is to discuss the reasoning behind differentiated instruction. The second section is for all teachers. This section examines how differentiated instruction stems from a clear purpose of instruction. …

Effectiveness Of Supplemental Reading Activities With First Grade Intensive Readers, Natalie Nena Kaplan Aug 2006

Effectiveness Of Supplemental Reading Activities With First Grade Intensive Readers, Natalie Nena Kaplan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The effectiveness of an intervention for English language learners (ELLs) at risk for reading problems is described. The treatment group was made up of 10 first grade students who were determined at risk for reading difficulties and were provided an intervention of supplemental reading instruction throughout the school year. Their scores on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS; Good, Kaminski, Laimon, & Johnson, 1992; Good, 1994) were assessed for phoneme segmentation fluency, nonsense word fluency, and oral reading fluency prior to and following intervention. The scores of the treatment group were then compared to a control group …

Strategies To Enhance Achievement For Boys, Susan Frick Aug 2006

Strategies To Enhance Achievement For Boys, Susan Frick

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Strategies to Enhance Achievement for Boys Gurian (1996) reported that brain research shows there are definite differences between the ways that boys' and girls' brains work. This applied project identifies some of the reasons why boys underachieve in school and includes strategies to assist and facilitate success in school; thereby, building responsible and confident adults. Effective strategies were combined in the guide book to enhance the way educators teach boys in school. The strategies are effective for boys at the elementary school level.

All-Diagonal Seven-Squares From The Oed, Rex Gooch Aug 2006

All-Diagonal Seven-Squares From The Oed, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

If I have found no 9-square with words for all its diagonals, and needed place names to produce all-diagonal 8-squares, then 7-squares can be produced solely from the OED. Omitting place names reduced the crucial elements from 3386 reversible words and 878 palindromes, 584 reversible and 661 palindromes.

Heterogrammic Word Squares, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2006

Heterogrammic Word Squares, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

A heterogrammic word square (one containing no repeated letters) is limited to size three or four; a size five square containing 25 different alphabetic letters is impossible to achieve. In Making the Alphabet Dance (St. Martin's , 1996), heterogrammic 4-squares by George Lopes, Jeremy Morse and Jeff Grant are given.

Life's Secret Files, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

In each of the groups of 3 words below, the first and second words make a 2-word phrase; the second and third words also make a 2-word phrase. Easy you might say and you would be right, if it wasn't for the fact that a third constraint requires that the first and third words be related. They may both be transposals, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, heterophones, different tenses of the same verb, palindromes, reversals, mutual shifts, rhyming words, AEIOU words, and so on.

Embedding Hamlet In Pi, Mike Keith, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2006

Embedding Hamlet In Pi, Mike Keith, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Take the text of Shakespeare's Hamlet beginning with its title "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Demark...". Write down the digits of pi (after the decimal point) in successive slices, reduce these mod 26, and convert the resulting numbers to letters using the correspondence A=0, B=1...Z=25.

On Palindromes, Richard Lederer Aug 2006

On Palindromes, Richard Lederer

Word Ways

The accident and popular Art of the Palindrome blazes out from the epicenter of the universe of letter play. Alistair Reid expresses what may be the very heart of the fascination for matters palindromic when he writes, "The dream which occupies the tortuous mind of every palindromist is that somewhere within the confines of the language lurks the Great Palindrome, the nutshell which not only fulfills the intricate demands of the art, flowing sweetly in both directions, but which also contains the Final Truth of Things." There is indeed something magic about the palindromic craft, the platonic form of making …

Vowel-Consonant Patterns In 8-Letter Heterograms, Susan Thorpe Aug 2006

Vowel-Consonant Patterns In 8-Letter Heterograms, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

In Vowel-Consonant Patterns: Part 1 (WW2002249) we found that there are 256 (2^8) 8-letter vowel-consonant patterns - 128 beginning with a consonant (C Patterns) and 128 with a vowel (V patterns). When it comes to heterograms (all letters different), these numbers are reduced. This is because there are only 5 different vowels available (a, e, i, o and u), so that any V-C number of C patterns available in reduced by 8 from 128 to 120; the number of V patterns is reduced by 29 from 128 to 99.
