Taking Offense And Individual Differences: Who We Are Determines What Offends Us, Sarah J. Mcdougal Sep 2006

Taking Offense And Individual Differences: Who We Are Determines What Offends Us, Sarah J. Mcdougal

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Scarce literature regarding the mechanisms of offense-taking exists. However, a broad survey of literature in social psychology points to several possible mechanisms such as: breaking cultural norms, sensemaking and the correspondence bias (Gilbert, 2000), intent, and individual differences. In this paper two individual differences are examined: need for cognition and narcissism. A survey presenting four scenarios, two generally offensive situations and two personal affronts, showed that those high in need for cognition were less likely to make a negative character judgment about the "offender" in several scenarios, while there was no distinguishable difference between those high or low in narcissism.

Purdue Rvl-Slll American Sign Language Database, Ronnie Wilbur, Avinash C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Development of automatic recognition systems for American Sign Language (ASL) needs a comprehensive database that provides a range of signed material under controlled and less-controlled lighting conditions. The database we created contains (a) handshapes in isolation and in single signs, (b) the American fingerspelling alphabet, (c) numbers, (d) movement in single signs, and (e) examples of short discourse narratives for testing sign recognition in connected linguistic contexts.

All of these are produced by 14 fluent Deaf ASL signers under controlled lighting conditions in a professional studio. All except the short narratives are also produced in less than superior lighting conditions. …

Participatory Approach In Decision Making Processes For Water Resources Management In The Mediterranean Basin, Carlo Giupponi, Jacopo Crimi, Jaroslav Mysiak

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper deals with the comparative analysis of different policy options for water resources management in three south-eastern Mediterranean countries. The applied methodology follows a participatory approach throughout its implementation and is supported by the use of three different software packages dealing with water allocation budget, water quality simulation, and Multi Criteria Analysis, respectively. The paper briefly describes the general objectives of the SMART project and then presents the three local case studies, the valuation objectives and the applied methodology - developed as a general replicable framework suitable for implementation in other decision-making processes. All the steps needed for a …

Semper Fi? The Infidelity Of The Seventh Circuit In Applying A Good Moral Character Requirement To Naturalizing War Veterans, Joshua P. Montgomery Sep 2006

Semper Fi? The Infidelity Of The Seventh Circuit In Applying A Good Moral Character Requirement To Naturalizing War Veterans, Joshua P. Montgomery

Seventh Circuit Review

In a case of first impression, the Seventh Circuit misinterpreted naturalization statutes to hold that a good moral character requirement is applicable to aliens who served honorably in the military during times of war. The obligation of naturalizing aliens to show good moral character is listed among the residency requirements of 8 U.S.C.S. § 1427. However, 8 U.S.C.S. § 1440 excuses alien wartime veterans from making this showing by exempting them from the residency requirements in 8 U.S.C.S. § 1427. In supporting its position that alien wartime veterans must prove good moral character in order to naturalize, the Seventh Circuit …

A Survey On Ontology Mapping, Namyoun Choi, Il-Yeol Song, Hyoil Han

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Ontology is increasingly seen as a key factor for enabling interoperability across heterogeneous systems and semantic web applications. Ontology mapping is required for combining distributed and heterogeneous ontologies. Developing such ontology mapping has been a core issue of recent ontology research. This paper presents ontology mapping categories, describes the characteristics of each category, compares these characteristics, and surveys tools, systems, and related work based on each category of ontology mapping. We believe this paper provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of ontology mapping and points to various research topics about the specific roles of ontology mapping.

Harnessing The Power Of Story: Using Narrative Reading And Writing Across Content Areas, Steven Nathanson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article reviews research to examine how teaching and learning are improved with the use of narrative story materials. Stories help to focus the reader's attention and build personal connection, resulting in better retention and deeper subject-matter understanding. Four key advantages of narratives cited by D. T Willingham are discussed. The effectiveness of stories is further supported by a review of research from diverse fields, including cognitive psychology, social and physical sciences, education, and communication. Suggestions and strategies for the use of narrative materials in content area settings beyond the elementary classroom are also provided.

Susanna's Way Of Becoming Literate: A Case Study Of Literacy Acquisition By A Young Girl From A Chinese Immigrant Family, Gaoyin Qian, Junlin Pan

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Susanna, a young girl from a low-income Chinese immigrant family, develops her oral language proficiency quickly in Head Start and kindergarten; however, she needs more support in her reading and writing. This case study examines an unusual journey of Susanna's learning to read and write in English. Observations in her home indicate a home with limited print, whereas Head Start and kindergarten provide not only print rich environment but also teachers' and peers' support so that she moves from an English language observer to an English language user. However, she still struggles with the use of decontextualized language. Susanna's difficulties …

A Dss Framework For Advanced Traffic Signal Control System Investment Planning, Houng Y. Soo, Dusan Teodorovic, John Collura

Journal of Public Transportation

This article presents ongoing research on the initial development of a decision support system (DSS) framework for integrated emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority system investment planning. A conceptual intelligent DSS framework provides a holistic framework to perform analytical assessments of integrated emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority systems. Three analytical tools are presented for incorporation into future DSS design: the first addresses the potential impact of transit travel time reduction on transit operating costs; the second addresses the potential impact of reduced emergency vehicle crashes at signalized intersections on fire and rescue operating costs; and the third integrates fuzzy …

The Clinical Utility Of Nonword Repetition For Children Living In The Rural South Of The Us, Janna B. Oetting, Lesli H. Cleveland Sep 2006

The Clinical Utility Of Nonword Repetition For Children Living In The Rural South Of The Us, Janna B. Oetting, Lesli H. Cleveland

Faculty Publications

Nonword repetition (NWR) tasks have been shown to minimize cultural biases in language assessment. In the current study, we further examined the clinical utility of NWR with 83 children who lived in the rural south of the US; 33 were African American and 50 were White, with 16 classified as specifically language impaired (SLI) 6-year-olds and 67 classified as either age-matched or younger controls. Main effects were found for group, with the children in the SLI group earning lower NWR scores than the controls. A main effect for syllable length but not race was also documented. The group and syllable …

The Teacher's Response Process In Dialogue Journals, Donna E. Werderich Sep 2006

The Teacher's Response Process In Dialogue Journals, Donna E. Werderich

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This grounded theory study explores how middle school literacy teachers used dialogue journals and the processes by which they responded to their students' written responses. Literary conversation between teacher and student was conceptualized as an ongoing scaffolding process within dialogue journals. Teachers used "response facilitators" including visual aids, modeling, questioning/requesting, and feedback independently and in combination with one another to scaffold literary conversation with students. Every response from a teacher had a place on a response continuum, fluctuating between instructional responses and conversational responses. There were times when the teachers' roles called for direct scaffolding, focusing on developing students' literacy …
