Energy Demand And Temperature: A Dynamic Panel Analysis, Andrea Bigano, Francesco Bosello , Giuseppe Marano Sep 2006

Energy Demand And Temperature: A Dynamic Panel Analysis, Andrea Bigano, Francesco Bosello , Giuseppe Marano

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper is a first attempt to investigate the effect of climate on the demand for different energy vectors from different final users. The ultimate motivation for this is to arrive to a consistent evaluation of the impact of climate change on key consumption goods and primary factors such as energy vectors. This paper addresses these issues by means of a dynamic panel analysis of the demand for coal, gas, electricity, oil and oil products by residential, commercial and industrial users in OECD and (a few) non-OECD countries. It turns out that temperature has a very different influence on the …

Global Climate Change, Technology Transfer And Trade With Complete Specialization, Dirk T.G. Rübbelke, Vivekananda Mukherjee Sep 2006

Global Climate Change, Technology Transfer And Trade With Complete Specialization, Dirk T.G. Rübbelke, Vivekananda Mukherjee

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper develops a model in which a country with better technology for abatement of Green House Gas (GHG) emission (the North) commits to an international protocol to keep the global GHG emission within a specified limit while it helps the mitigation effort in the other country (the South) with unconditional transfer of abatement technology. It finds out in the autarkic (‘no trade’) equilibrium the technology transfer offer from the North is always accepted by the South. The North may offer either a partial or a complete technology transfer. If partial technology transfer is offered it finds out the determinants …

Noncomparabilities & Non Standard Logics, Robert C. Hockett Sep 2006

Noncomparabilities & Non Standard Logics, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Many normative theories set forth in the welfare economics, distributive justice and cognate literatures posit noncomparabilities or incommensurabilities between magnitudes of various kinds. In some cases these gaps are predicated on metaphysical claims, in others upon epistemic claims, and in still others upon political-moral claims. I show that in all such cases they are best given formal expression in nonstandard logics that reject bivalence, excluded middle, or both. I do so by reference to an illustrative case study: a contradiction known to beset John Rawls's selection and characterization of primary goods as the proper distribuendum in any distributively just society. …

Understanding Long-Term Energy Use And Carbon Dioxide Emissions In The Usa, Richard S.J. Tol, Stephen W. Pacala , Robert Socolow Sep 2006

Understanding Long-Term Energy Use And Carbon Dioxide Emissions In The Usa, Richard S.J. Tol, Stephen W. Pacala , Robert Socolow

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We compile a database of energy uses, energy sources, and carbon dioxide emissions for the USA for the period 1850-2002. We use a model to extrapolate the missing observations on energy use by sector. Overall emission intensity rose between 1850 and 1917, and fell between 1917 and 2002. The leading cause for the rise in emission intensity was the switch from wood to coal, but population growth, economic growth, and electrification contributed as well. After 1917, population growth, economic growth and electrification pushed emissions up further, and there was no net shift from fossil to non-fossil energy sources. From 1850 …

Foreigners And The City: An Historiographical Exploration For The Early Modern Period, Donatella Calabi Sep 2006

Foreigners And The City: An Historiographical Exploration For The Early Modern Period, Donatella Calabi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper will focus on the physical traces left by different minorities in the European city of the early modern age. Looking to the urban context in the main important ports and commercial centers we can find violent conflicts, traditional uses, as well as new urban strategies by the governors to keep together (for economic and social purposes) city-dwellers and foreigners. The invention of specific buildings and the effect on the architectural language is often quite visible and a mean of cultural exchanges.

Mapping Diversity In Milan. Historical Approaches To Urban Immigration, John Foot Sep 2006

Mapping Diversity In Milan. Historical Approaches To Urban Immigration, John Foot

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

An historical and spatial approach is crucial to the understanding of any city. Waves of immigration and population movements from different sources have constructed the cultural mix of this financial, industrial and market city over time. To focus just on the new foreign immigration into Milan over the last 25 years or so risks omitting the deep historical fissures created by previous (and bigger) waves of population movements – the traces left by these populations in the urban fabric and their role in subjective experience. Moreover, the historical and spatial comparison of various types and moments of population movement can …

Eu Legal Personality In Foreign Policy?, Rafael Leal-Arcas Sep 2006

Eu Legal Personality In Foreign Policy?, Rafael Leal-Arcas

ExpressO

This article examines whether the European Union (EU) already had legal personality prior to the EU’s Constitutional Convention’s statement in the autumn of 2002 on the need to provide the EU with legal personality. Abolition of the distinction between the Union and the two surviving Communities is an essential aspect of simplifying the Treaties, and making the European constitutional order easier to understand for those subject to it. It follows that there has to be a single Union legal personality; but recognition of this would not, in itself, entail any extension of the Union’s powers. However, one wonders whether, by …

Water Infrastructures Facing Sustainable Development Challenges: Integrated Evaluation Of Impacts Of Dams On Regional Development In Morocco, Paola Minoia, Anna Brusarosco Sep 2006

Water Infrastructures Facing Sustainable Development Challenges: Integrated Evaluation Of Impacts Of Dams On Regional Development In Morocco, Paola Minoia, Anna Brusarosco

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

During the past century, large hydraulic infrastructures have been considered as the most effective tools for increasing water supply and rationalise water management. According to this approach, large infrastructures are seen as catalysts for territorial development and economic progress. More recently, international surveys of results of water supply policies and performances of large dams, show that these structures need to be integrated in more comprehensive Integrated Water Resource Management strategies at catchments’ scale, to promote equitable and sustainable regional development. The aim of this communication is to present the role of large hydraulic infrastructures within the regional development dynamics with …

Economic Valuation Of Oceanographic Forecasting Services:, Aline Chiabai , Paulo A.L.D. Nunes Sep 2006

Economic Valuation Of Oceanographic Forecasting Services:, Aline Chiabai , Paulo A.L.D. Nunes

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper provides an assessment of the economic value of the oceanographic services provided by the Mediterranean operational forecasting system, MFSTEP. The main purpose of this exploratory study is to carry out a cost-benefit analysis for different development scenarios, by comparing the costs associated with the project implementation with the private benefits that arise from delivering its products on the market. As far as the costs are concerned, a total cost assessment has been performed by identifying, classifying and estimating the wide range of inputs that have been allocated both to the project development and maintenance. Against this context, a …

Identity And Self-Other Differentiation In Work And Giving Behaviors: Experimental Evidence, Avner Ben-Ner, Brian P. Mccall, Massoud Stephane, Hua Wang Sep 2006

Identity And Self-Other Differentiation In Work And Giving Behaviors: Experimental Evidence, Avner Ben-Ner, Brian P. Mccall, Massoud Stephane, Hua Wang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We show that the distinction between Self and Other, ‘us’ and ‘them,’ or in-group and out-group, affects significantly economic and social behavior. In a series of experiments with approximately 200 Midwestern students as our subjects, we found that they favor those who are similar to them on any of a wide range of categories of identity over those who are not like them. Whereas family and kinship are the most powerful source of identity in our sample, all 13 potential sources of identity in our experiments affect behavior. We explored individuals’ willingness to give money to imaginary people, using a …

Formulaic Deliberation, Andre L. Smith Sep 2006

Formulaic Deliberation, Andre L. Smith

ExpressO

Formulaic Deliberation describes the major interpretive regimes--textualism, intentionalism, purposivism, and pragmatism—and represents them formulaically. By classifying them this way, it more precisely describes them as theories, so that we can more precisely perform them as deliberative techniques. And, if we agree that none of them, individually, fits all cases at all times, we can formulaically describe how to synthesize them toward a discrete decision.

William Eskridge, Stanley Fish, Hon. Antonin Scalia, Richard Posner, Ronald Dworkin, John Hart Ely, Adrian Vermeule, Hon. Stephen Breyer, Cass Sunstein, Lawrence Lessig. All of them are right, their method for deciding cases produces benefits with …

Polycephalous Anatomy Of The Ec In The Wto: An Analysis Of Law And Practice, Rafael Leal-Arcas Sep 2006

Polycephalous Anatomy Of The Ec In The Wto: An Analysis Of Law And Practice, Rafael Leal-Arcas

ExpressO

This article analyzes the unique legal position of the European Community (EC) in the world trading system. Its polycephalous anatomy derives from the fact that all 25 Member States of the EC are members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) along with the EC itself. This means that when referring to the EC, the whole as well as its parts are independent Members of the WTO. This has legal and political consequences related to the allocation of powers between the national and supranational levels that will be analyzed. The article explains what is meant by a “mixed agreement” and analyzes …

Pensando En Cynthia Y Su Hermana: Educational Implications Of United States–Mexico Transnationalism For Children, Edmund T. Hamann, Victor Zuniga, Juan Sanchez Garcia

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

We use 3 brief educational biographies of students in Mexico who have previously attended public school in the United States to introduce this literature review on United States–Mexico transnational students. This article is also the first of several planned articles stemming from a currently ongoing, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia-supported research study. As such, the purpose here is to highlight some of the dynamics faced by students who need to negotiate 2 educational systems (the United States and Mexico) and who fit neither a classic United States immigrant typology nor the typical premises around which schooling in Mexico is …

Imagining The Law-Trained Reader: The Faulty Description Of The Audience In Legal Writing Textbooks., Jessica E. Price Sep 2006

Imagining The Law-Trained Reader: The Faulty Description Of The Audience In Legal Writing Textbooks., Jessica E. Price

ExpressO

In law schools today, first-year legal writing courses play a crucial role in helping students learn to communicate about the law. Many legal writing teachers approach legal writing education in a practical way, attempting to pass on their own experiences in law practice settings to students. Unfortunately, as other writers have observed, such reliance on personal knowledge about “what lawyers are like” may lead legal writing teachers to oversimplify a complicated matter – the needs and preferences of the audience for legal writing – and may even amount to indoctrination in stereotypes about law practice. This article offers a closer …

Legal Construct Validation: Expanding Empirical Legal Scholarship To Unobservable Concepts, David S. Goldman Sep 2006

Legal Construct Validation: Expanding Empirical Legal Scholarship To Unobservable Concepts, David S. Goldman

ExpressO

This article contends that many of the fundamental concepts of law (such as justice, incentives, and deterrence) are not directly measurable, and have, therefore, been largely ignored by empirical legal scholarship. Fortunately, other social sciences have confronted this same obstacle and have developed methods with which to empirically assess these intangible concepts. I propose that the concept of construct validation, which has been developed in the psychology subfield of psychometrics, can be adapted to law to measure these unobservable traits. To adapt construct validation to law, empirical legal scholars must 1) develop generalized theories, 2) infer multiple hypotheses from these …

Hedonic Damages, Hedonic Adaptation, And Disability, Samuel R. Bagenstos, Margo Schlanger Sep 2006

Hedonic Damages, Hedonic Adaptation, And Disability, Samuel R. Bagenstos, Margo Schlanger

ExpressO

This article contributes to the broad debate over “adaptive preferences” in law, economics, and political philosophy by addressing an important ongoing controversy in tort law. Hedonic damages compensate for the lost enjoyment of life that results from a tortious injury. Lawyers seeking hedonic damages in personal injury cases emphasize their clients’ new status as compromised and damaged persons, and courts frequently uphold jury verdicts awarding hedonic damages to individuals who experienced disabling injuries based on a view that disability necessarily limits one’s enjoyment of life. This view is consonant with a general societal understanding of disability as a tragedy and …
