Code Switching: ¿Y Qué?, Helen Zamarripa

Theses Digitization Project

The project examined the pros and cons regarding the use code of switching across social contexts both in oral and written language. It argues that code switching is a viable mediating tool for teaching students the values of their language(s), culture(s), and identity. The researcher uses Vygotsky's concept of the Zone of Proximal Development to show that children often use code switching as a means to accommodate gaps in their English language skills. Teachers who recognize this can assist students by using social interaction and language as a tool to bridge the level of actual performance and the learning potential …

The data was collected from a low socioeconomic elementary school, specifically looking at a second grade classroom. Bilingual Lexical Activation In Sentence Context, Ana Schwartz, Judith Kroll Jan 2006

Bilingual Lexical Activation In Sentence Context, Ana Schwartz, Judith Kroll

Selected Works Temporary Series

The present study investigated the cognitive nature of second language (L2) lexical processing in sentence context. We examined bilinguals’ L2 word recognition performance for language-ambiguous words [cognates (e.g., piano); and homographs (e.g., pan)] in two sentence context experiments with highly proficient Spanish-English bilinguals living in a bilingual community (Experiment 1) and with intermediate proficiency Spanish-English bilinguals living in a monolingual community (Experiment 2). To determine the influence of sentence constraint on cross-language activation, the critical words and their matched controls were inserted in low- and high-constraint sentences. In low-constraint sentences significant cognate facilitation was observed, suggesting that both languages were …

Plato's View Of Tyranny, Antonis Coumoundouros Jan 2006

Plato's View Of Tyranny, Antonis Coumoundouros

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores and highlights Plato's timeless and enduring insights on tyranny and the tyrannical personality in the Republic. I argue that Plato has a comprehensive and illuminating account of tyranny and, while neglected by scholars, such an account is applicable to our understanding of ethical and political life. The dissertation begins by considering the use of the term "tyrant" in Plato's literary tradition, from Archilochus to Thucydides and Isocrates, to situate his critical view of tyranny. Then I proceed to explore the descriptive and prescriptive aspects of Plato's view of tyranny in relation to Thrasymachus' claim that tyranny or …

The Impact Of "Parents Feeling Capable" Treatment On The Self-Efficacy Of Low Socio-Economic Parents, L. Robert Furman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Parental involvement in a student's life has been a topic that has inspired much research in the past and continues to be a major research focus in the field of both psychology and education. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of parent workshops (Parents Feeling Capable) specifically designed to enhance the self-efficacy of parents of preadolescent children identified as being of low socio-economic status. To perform …

Portraits Through The Lens Of Historicity: The American Family As Portrayed In Ladies Home Journal 1950-1959, Nancy Patton Mills

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems associated with communication and the American family have often been the subject of academic research projects. The 1950s family is unique and offers the researcher a complex web of interwoven narratives and situational hermeneutics that have affected the American family. In an attempt to understand what was happening in the 1950s, it is imperative that an understanding of the historical moment and its significance be explored.

This dissertation examines the American family through the lens of several interpersonal communication paradigms and theories to generate a conceptual framework for understanding the "story" of the family told through its communicative …

Growing Up Cartoonist In The Baby-Boom South: A Memoir And Cartoon Retrospective, Kate Salley Palmer Jan 2006

Growing Up Cartoonist In The Baby-Boom South: A Memoir And Cartoon Retrospective, Kate Salley Palmer

Monographs

Kate Salley Palmer was an inadvertent trailblazer. In the early 1970s, she was a freelance artist living in Clemson, South Carolina. Then the nationally televised Watergate hearings took hold of her, and she found herself drawing cartoon after cartoon about the scandal, whose latest developments she followed as religiously as other people follow soap operas. She started selling a few of the cartoons she couldn't stop drawing to whatever local newspapers would buy them. In 1975, The Greenville News hired her part-time. She was, it turned out, that paper's first-ever political cartoonist. By the next year, the News was running …
