The Canonical Sense Of Scripture: Trinitarian Or Christocentric?, Alan G. Padgett Jan 2006

The Canonical Sense Of Scripture: Trinitarian Or Christocentric?, Alan G. Padgett

Faculty Publications

In this essay I develop a threefold sense for Scripture today: conventional, canonical, and contemporary. This is my “grammar” for evangelical theological hermeneutics. I explore in particular the canonical sense: the level of meaning of the biblical passage read in the light of the whole of Scripture, with Christ as the center and key. In dialogue with the Orthodox, I argue that such a christocentric approach must also be, finally, a Trinitarian one.

“At The Same Time Blessed And Lame”: Ontology, Christology And Violence In Augustine And John Milbank, Elizabeth Agnew Cochran Jan 2006

“At The Same Time Blessed And Lame”: Ontology, Christology And Violence In Augustine And John Milbank, Elizabeth Agnew Cochran

Journal for Christian Theological Research

In Being Reconciled, John Milbank affirms the necessity of Christ’s atonement for human redemption. Yet his Christological claims are undercut by the ontology that undergirds the narrative he puts forth in Theology and Social Theory. This narrative depends upon the premise that a denial of a positive ontological status for violence lies at the heart of Christianity. A comparison of Theology and Social Theory to Augustine’s The City of God demonstrates that Augustine accepts a form of dialectical ontology that Milbank rejects, and that this dialectical ontology undergirds Augustine’s Christology in crucial ways. Although the differences between Milbank’s …

The Dubious Quality Of Legal Dictionaries, Gerard-René De Groot, Conrad J.P. Van Laer Jan 2006

The Dubious Quality Of Legal Dictionaries, Gerard-René De Groot, Conrad J.P. Van Laer

International Journal of Legal Information

As a consequence of the still increasing transnational commercial and scholarly cooperation and exchange, more and more often legal information has to be translated. Sometimes the content of legal documents (contracts, statutory provisions, books and articles on legal topics and so on) has to be translated into another language. But even more frequently, information on rules from one legal system has to be provided in the legal language of another legal system. In both cases the translator or the lawyer involved is confronted with difficulties of legal translation. In both cases bilingual legal dictionaries could play an important role in …

From Mounds To Monasteries: A Look At Spiro And Other Centers Through The Use Of Metaphor, Robert L. Brooks Jan 2006

From Mounds To Monasteries: A Look At Spiro And Other Centers Through The Use Of Metaphor, Robert L. Brooks

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Previous study of the extensive and elaborate funerary offerings at the Spiro site have explained their presence by an exchange system with Spiro functioning as a gateway center. More recently, Schambach has argued extensively and passionately for Spiro’s role as an entrepôt redistributive center. However, this argument fails to account for much of the accumulation of funerary items present at Spiro. As an alternative, I propose that some ceremonial centers such as Spiro functioned solely as religious centers, much like the monasteries of medieval Europe with parallels in the use of architecture, economic support, relics, and the treatment of individuals …

The Utep Corpus Of Iraqi Arabic, Nigel Ward, David G. Novick, Salamah I. Salamah Jan 2006

The Utep Corpus Of Iraqi Arabic, Nigel Ward, David G. Novick, Salamah I. Salamah

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The rules governing turn-taking phenomena are not well understood in general and almost completely undocumented for Arabic. As the first step to modeling these phenomena, we have collected a small corpus of Iraqi Arabic spoken dialogs. The corpus is in three parts. Part A is 110 minutes of unstructured conversations. Parts B1 and B2 are 176 minutes of direction-giving dialogs, most including a greeting phase, a smalltalk phase, a request phase, and a direction-giving phase. Parts A and B1 were recorded with 13 native speakers of Iraqi Arabic, interacting in pairs. In Part B2 the direction-getter is an American with …

Trade (Chapter 2 Of The Dutch-Munsee Encounter In America: The Struggle For Sovereignty In The Hudson Valley), Paul Otto Jan 2006

Trade (Chapter 2 Of The Dutch-Munsee Encounter In America: The Struggle For Sovereignty In The Hudson Valley), Paul Otto

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

"Just as word of Hudson's arrival must have spread among the Indians, so too did news of his discovery spread in Europe. Motivated by the 1deals of material acquisition and driven by economic forces in Europe, Dutch merchants in Amsterdam wasted no time in dispatching trade expeditions after learning of the newly discovered lands and the valuable supply of furs in the Hudson River region. The Munsees, already engaged in trade with other native peoples throughout northeastern North America, welcomed the new source and availability of goods and provided a nexus through which Europeans would have access to Indian markets …

The British Church And The Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms To C.620 (Chapter Four Of The Celtic And Roman Traditions: Conflict And Consensus In The Early Medieval Church), Caitlin Corning

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

Excerpt: "At the same time that Columbanus was establishing his monasteries in Merovingian Gaul, Pope Gregory the Great began planning a mission to convert the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms located in present-day England. The pope wrote to leading Merovingians such as Brunhild asking for their support in this endeavor and to provide whatever aid was necessary for the missionaries. In 596, Augustine (597–604/10), future bishop of Canterbury, and his party departed Italy for the north, traveling through the Merovingian kingdoms to Kent where the papal mission established their headquarters at the old Roman town of Canterbury (map 4.1).

In the first years …

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Single-Sex Versus Mixed-Sex Classes On Middle School Student Achievement, Carol E. Thom Jan 2006

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Single-Sex Versus Mixed-Sex Classes On Middle School Student Achievement, Carol E. Thom

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of single-sex versus mixedsex classes on middle school student achievement. It was a case study of Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Charleston, West Virginia, an inner-city school with approximately 600 students, of which 30% were minority (mostly black), 30% were special needs, and 70% were classified low socio-economic status (SES). Student WESTEST (West Virginia Educational Standards Test) scores in reading/language arts and math were collected and compared from the school years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. Each student’s scores from the first year were compared to that same student’s scores from the …

‘Flex Your Power’: Energy Crises And The Shifting Rhetoric Of The Grid, Anne Marie Todd, A. Wood Jan 2006

‘Flex Your Power’: Energy Crises And The Shifting Rhetoric Of The Grid, Anne Marie Todd, A. Wood

Faculty Publications

In response to widespread power outages, rolling blackouts, and ubiquitous energy debates, this essay considers our relation to energy and the grid that produces it. First, we investigate California's multimedia Flex Your Power campaign, which defines consumers as nodes of the grid to emphasize their responsibility to maintain a stable energy supply. Second, we examine state and national responses to the 2003 blackout in the Northeastern United States, attending to three strategies through which grid administrators sought to impose order, enact hierarchy, and deindividuate power. We propose that the grid invokes personalization at the "local" level and abstraction at the …

Hidden Sentiments, Unfinished Project: Pirandello’S Film La Nuova Colonia, Stefano Giannini Jan 2006

Hidden Sentiments, Unfinished Project: Pirandello’S Film La Nuova Colonia, Stefano Giannini

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

This article investigates the notion of the unfinished work. In Pirandello studies the word unfinished holds particular importance. Luigi Pirandello's last, and one of his major works, I giganti della montagna [The Mountain Giants] was not completed. The many years devoted to its making weaken the assumption that Pirandello was not capable of completing it in favor of his decision not to complete his work. I considered the overlapping of the writing of I giganti della montagna and of the attempts to produce the film La nuova colonia [The New Colony] an important, and insofar unnoticed, key element for understanding …

The Confluence Of Intersubjectivity And Dialogue In Postmodern Organizational Workgroups, Daniel J. Shuster Jan 2006

The Confluence Of Intersubjectivity And Dialogue In Postmodern Organizational Workgroups, Daniel J. Shuster

College of Business and Technology - Graduate Student Scholarship

Nascent revival of dialogue is struggling to reach its potential within the postmodern organizational milieu. Concurrently, interpersonal intersubjectivity has steadily been de-pathologized, via reassessments of countertransference in the psychoanalytic sphere, allowing exploration of its utility in other domains of relational process. Effective use of dialogue is critical and foundational to developing meaningful and sustainable enterprise in the immediate future. Despite the risks, intentionally explored intersubjectivity is a powerful tool to enrich the container of dialogue. This paper qualitatively explores the literature on intersubjectivity and dialogue with an hermeneutic approach to discern the implications of their convergence for collaborative workgroups in …
