A Preliminary Review Of Neotropical Primates In The Subsistence And Symbolism Of Indigenous Lowland South American Peoples, Loretta Cormier Apr 2006

A Preliminary Review Of Neotropical Primates In The Subsistence And Symbolism Of Indigenous Lowland South American Peoples, Loretta Cormier

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

This article provides a review of selected literature of nonhuman primates in the subsistence and symbolism of indigenous lowland South American groups. While few works have focused specifically on the relationship between human and nonhuman primates in Amazonia and the surrounding areas, a number of ethnographic works do incorporate information about the roles of monkeys in varied groups. The section on subsistence focuses on the use of primates as food, including preferences, avoidances, and taboos. The section on symbolism focuses on the role of monkeys in myths, folklore, and in delineating the humanity/animality divide.

Visual Arts And Writing A Mutually Beneficial Relationship, Guy Trainin, Nancy Andrzejczak, Monique Poldberg Apr 2006

Visual Arts And Writing A Mutually Beneficial Relationship, Guy Trainin, Nancy Andrzejczak, Monique Poldberg

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design

This study focused on integrating art and literacy in elementary classrooms, grades 2-4, to benefit students’ writing, language, visual art production and art appreciation. The curriculum linked explicitly art making and writing. Implementation in year one with newly trained teachers impacted student achievement positively. Self created pictures drawn before writing enhanced the quality of writing by presenting a physical reality and complex texturing not available to students otherwise. Both writing quality and quantity grew as compared with controls and the school district as a whole. Student artistic observation also improved but still reflected a generally low level. Achievement gains transferred …

Applying The Wiretap Act To Online Communications After United States V. Councilman, Jessica Belskis Apr 2006

Applying The Wiretap Act To Online Communications After United States V. Councilman, Jessica Belskis

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

This article examines the federal Wiretap Act and its application to online communications in light of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit’s recent decision in United States v. Councilman. The federal Wiretap Act places legal limits on the surveillance of electronic communications, but courts struggle to make sense of its application to online communications. Formerly, courts held that the Wiretap Act did not apply to the retrieval of communications from places of electronic storage. However, in United States v. Councilman, the First Circuit suggests that retrieval of emails from temporary places of electronic storage …

The True Picture Of The Indian—As Jackson Viewed It: The Portrayal Of Alessandro As An Atypical Native American, Carrie. Olin Apr 2006

The True Picture Of The Indian—As Jackson Viewed It: The Portrayal Of Alessandro As An Atypical Native American, Carrie. Olin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Helen Hunt Jackson wrote the sentimental novel,

Ramona, to call attention to social justice for Native Americans. This thesis presents a reconsideration and reevaluation of the novel, especially that of the Native American voice the novel presents, by recognizing the complexities of Native American literature and culture. Previous criticism of the novel focuses on the portrayal of Hispanics or the "real life" events, such as the shaping of Southern California, the "true" Ramona, or the life of Jackson. Since there is little critical debate of the text itself, this thesis initiates further exploration. An extensive review of the scholarship …

Automated Grammatical Analysis Of Language Samples From Spanish-Speaking Children Learning English, Nicole Redd Apr 2006

Automated Grammatical Analysis Of Language Samples From Spanish-Speaking Children Learning English, Nicole Redd

Theses and Dissertations

Research has demonstrated that automated grammatical tagging is fast and accurate for both English and Spanish child language, but there has been no research done regarding its accuracy with bilingual children. The present study examined this topic using English and Spanish language samples taken from 254 children living in the United States. The subjects included school-aged children enrolled in public schools in the United States in grades 2, 3, or 5. The present study found high automated grammatical tagging accuracy scores for both English (M = 96.4%) and Spanish (M = 96.8%). The study suggests that automated grammatical analysis has …

A Fuzzy Approach For Detecting Anomalous Behaviour In E-Mail Traffic, Mark Jynhuey Lim, Michael Negnevitsky, Jacky Hartnett Apr 2006

A Fuzzy Approach For Detecting Anomalous Behaviour In E-Mail Traffic, Mark Jynhuey Lim, Michael Negnevitsky, Jacky Hartnett

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

This paper investigates the use of fuzzy inference for detection of abnormal changes in email traffic communication behaviour. Several communication behaviour measures and metrics are defined for extracting information on the traffic communication behaviour of email users. The information from these behaviour measures is then combined using a hierarchy of fuzzy inference systems, to provide an abnormality rating for overall changes in communication behaviour of suspect email accounts. The use of fuzzy inference is then demonstrated with a case study investigating the email traffic behaviour of a person’s email accounts from the Enron email corpus.

Shari‘A And Fiqh: Embodiments Of The Theoretical And The Practical, Margaret Pettygrove Apr 2006

Shari‘A And Fiqh: Embodiments Of The Theoretical And The Practical, Margaret Pettygrove

Macalester Islam Journal

The relationship between law and morality is such that it is not easy to separate the two concepts. Generally in Islam, law and morality are one and the same, and speaking of them as distinct ideas is not really possible. It is largely a problem of language, in that English distinguishes between law and morality, whereas Arabic does not clearly do so. It is, nevertheless, possible to parse the Shari‘a into aspects that resemble morality and those that resemble law, as Bernard Weiss does in The Search for God’s Law. The Shari‘a is the “totality of ‘divine categorizations of human …

Reason In Islamic Law, Emma Gallegos Apr 2006

Reason In Islamic Law, Emma Gallegos

Macalester Islam Journal

Different words and concepts in cultures do not necessarily always translate perfectly or adequately to others. This truism provides a perfect starting point to attempt an understanding of classical Islamic law. In trying to understand the different concepts of reason, belief and knowledge in that realm, we have come to understand something that would vex many Americans given their own definitions of these concepts: that the law of Islam held to be divine by its practitioners puts an incredible amount of stress on its rational basis. In trying to understand a seeming paradox, we have discovered how closely interwoven rationality …

A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed Apr 2006

A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed

Theses and Dissertations

Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. …

Perspectives on adult learning have changed dramatically over the decades. Defining intelligence has expanded in many different ways, from a traditional, basic view of gaining knowledge and skills to an enhanced view of developing a process of critical self-reflection leading to transformation.
