Abreviasi Dalam Bahasa Inggris, Arie Andrasyah Isa
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study is concerned with a productive word-form process in the morphological level, such as abbreviation. Through the process of the word form, I intend to find out how to make new words in using the abbreviation in English. Besides, I intend to review the concept of abbreviation. The aim of this study is also to observe how the abbreviation can form new words. The data employed in this study are from newspaper Jakarta Post and Kompas, and examples provided by the related linguists. With the data exemplified by the linguists and based on their discussion on abbreviation, I think …
Tingkat Tutur Dalam Bahasa Sasak Dan Bahasa Jawa, Sudirman Wilian
Tingkat Tutur Dalam Bahasa Sasak Dan Bahasa Jawa, Sudirman Wilian
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper discusses about speech levels in Sasak, the language of the indigenious people of the island of Lombok, examining the style, meaning and some historical background of the speech levels. Based on the data, it shows that Sasak, like Javanese and Balinese, also contains low, mid, high and few honorific vocabularies which are assumed to have been borrowed from Javanese (Steven, 1975; Nothofer, 1975). However, the use of the high and honorific variations are scarecly heard in the everyday common Sasaks conversation. In most occurrences, the high speech level is pronounced only among the so called menak Sasaks and …

The Women House Church Leaders Of China: Interviews With A Muted Group, Timothy R. Wommack
The Women House Church Leaders Of China: Interviews With A Muted Group, Timothy R. Wommack
Masters Theses
While studying the Bakweri people of Cameroon in the 1960s, Edwin and Shirley
Ardener discovered that it was the men who dominated and controlled the power and language of the group and created the societal understanding and the cultural makeup of their tribe's identity. The men did not allow the women to speak or have a say in the elements of their culture; these women were muted. Throughout history many individuals, especially women, have been muted in any number of ways. These include political, economical, social, cultural constrictions, even to the point of death, to keep them from being represented. …

Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos
Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos
ETSU Faculty Works
There are many issues that relate to the efficacy of the undergraduate degree in the field of communicative disorders. Some have advocated for the elimination of the degree while others vigorously fight to maintain it. Some believe that there should be clinic associated with the undergraduate degree while others argue to have the degree but without clinic. Some state departments of education allow persons with an undergraduate degree in communicative disorders to practice in the schools, others do not. Colleges and universities are afraid that without an undergraduate degree program, their departments will be seen as vulnerable to elimination in …

Human Rights Enforcement In The 21st Century, Douglas L. Donoho
Human Rights Enforcement In The 21st Century, Douglas L. Donoho
ExpressO
The international human rights system’s approach to enforcement and implementation of human rights has proven unrealistic in a world characterized by oppression, poverty and armed conflict. In this essay, I suggest that traditional approaches to enforcement, while serving some important functions, are inadequate to meet the challenge of effectively realizing human rights in the 21st Century. These inadequacies include a variety of institutional, conceptual and jurisprudential weaknesses, including: (1) failure to develop a coherent overall structure with institutions whose attributes are likely to promote the legitimacy of international decision-making and encourage state respect; (2) refusal to make important distinctions among …

Allusive Mechanics In Modern And Postmodern Fiction As Suggested By James Joyce In His Novel Dubliners, Kynan D. Connor
Allusive Mechanics In Modern And Postmodern Fiction As Suggested By James Joyce In His Novel Dubliners, Kynan D. Connor
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
James Joyce in his novel Dubliners conducts a series of narrative experiments with allusion, and in doing so suggests a new literary criticism based upon the allusive process. This new criticism of allusive mechanics considers the text in terms of its allusive potential for character—that is, the character is treated as capable of signification. Because Joyce can mimic the process of signification, it repositions the author to the act of writing and the reader to the act of reading. Character is greatly expanded through allusive mechanics because narrative elements like allusion in a text are treated as having a character-oriented …

The Development Of Leibniz’S Substance Ontology From 1666-1688, Justin Sean Davis
The Development Of Leibniz’S Substance Ontology From 1666-1688, Justin Sean Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Leibniz’s early conception of individual substance ontology is one of the most puzzling, and fascinating, within the history of philosophy. It is the purpose of this paper to show that: 1) Leibniz did develop a coherent scheme that embodied his substance ontology, 2) the exposition of his early substance ontology is in A Specimen of the Discoveries of the Admirable Secrets of Nature in General, written in 1688 and, 3) the scheme is not sufficiently represented in the Discourse on Metaphysics.
Leibniz slowly developed a multifaceted view of substance within the twenty years previous to the writing of the Discourse. …

Anti-Individualism And Rationality, Adam J. Arico
Anti-Individualism And Rationality, Adam J. Arico
Theses
Paul Boghossian has argued that externalist descriptions of mental content are unfit for assessments of rationality. An individual, he suggests, can comport with the principles of logic and rationality if and only if she is able to introspectively recognize the content of her thoughts and beliefs without relying on empirical evidence. Jessica Brown argues, first, that Boghossian¿s notion of rationality is unrealistic and incompatible with modern experimental data, and second, that his principles of transparency of mental content are unreasonable and, ultimately, self-defeating. In defending Boghossian¿s notion of rationality, and subsequently his transparency principles, this paper attempts to respond to …

Preliminary Notes On The Nedebang Language, Gary Holton
Alaska Native Language Center Faculty
Preliminary report on the Nedebang language (ISO 639-3 code: nec), based on 65 pages of field notes collected by the author on Pantar Island July 27-30, 2004.1 Nedebang is one of four non-Austronesian languages spoken on the island of Pantar in the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur, in the region of 8.275 S latitude, 124.202 E longitude. To my knowledge the only previously published data from Nedebang are to be found in a 117 word basic vocabulary (Stokhof 1975), recently re-elicited by Pampus (2006). The present paper will attempt to provide a more current picture of the Nedebang language …

Agentive And Patientive Verb Bases In North Alaskan Inupiaq, Tadataka Nagai
Linguistics
This dissertation is concerned with North Alaskan Inupiaq Eskimo. It has two goals: (i) to provide a grammatical sketch of the Upper Kobuk dialect of this language; (ii) to investigate agentive and patientive verb bases. Chapter 2 is a grammatical sketch of the Upper Kobuk dialect of North Alaskan Inupiaq. Chapter through 5 deal with two types of verb bases in this language, called agentive and patientive. As we see in Chapter 3, agentive and patientive verb bases are verb bases that can inflect either intransitively or transitively, and they differ in the following ways: (i) prototypical agentive bases have …

Socioeconomic Review Of Alaska's Bristol Bay Region, Marie Lowe
ISER Reports
This report provides a “desktop” socioeconomic and sociocultural review of the Bristol Bay Region prepared for the North Star Group by the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Using secondary sources, the report characterizes the local population and its history by examining events that have influenced social change and how locals have adapted to that change. It reviews current social and economic issues in the region to provide a context for potential future mining development. Part 1 presents a regional overview with a description of Bristol Bay’s cultural history, demography, economy, institutions, and …
