Dynamics Of A Two Serotype Disease With Antibody Dependent Enhancement, Amy Fiorillo
Dynamics Of A Two Serotype Disease With Antibody Dependent Enhancement, Amy Fiorillo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The dengue virus is a serious infectious disease that can be found in many regions of Southeast Asia. There exist four serotypes of the virus. Recovery from one serotype produces a natural immunity from that serotype. However, it also creates complexes with a second infection and will increase viral production. This process is know as antibody dependent enhancement (ADE). As a result, it is very difficult to vaccinate against the disease. An optimal vaccination would have to cover all four serotypes at once. To understand the dynamics of the disease, we will study a mathematical model for two coexisting serotypes …

Variance Estimation And Construction Of Confidence Intervals For Gee Estimator, Shenghai Zhang, Mary E. Thompson
Variance Estimation And Construction Of Confidence Intervals For Gee Estimator, Shenghai Zhang, Mary E. Thompson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The sandwich estimator, also known as the robust covariance matrix estimator, has achieved increasing use in the statistical literature as well as with the growing popularity of generalized estimating equations (GEE). A modified sandwich variance estimator is proposed, and its consistency and efficiency are studied. It is compared with other variance estimators, such as a model based estimator, the sandwich estimator and a corrected sandwich estimator. Confidence intervals for regression parameters based on these estimators are discussed. Simulation studies using clustered data to compare the performance of variance estimators are reported.

Negotiating Change: An Analysis Of The Origins Of Ghana's National Health Insurance Act, Jennifer L. Singleton
Negotiating Change: An Analysis Of The Origins Of Ghana's National Health Insurance Act, Jennifer L. Singleton
Sociology Honors Projects
Given the neo-liberal ideologies of the majority party and global trends toward market-based approaches to social services, the passage of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme, which provides coverage for all, seems anomalous. To answer the questions raised by this legislation, I analyze evidence from the government and consulting agencies. I find that a shift in international focus to allow social service reform combined with domestic electoral political influences. The scheme’s foundation of district mutual health organizations evolved from a USAID-funded consulting agency’s work, and may additionally reflect creative borrowing from the United States’ failed healthcare reforms of 1993.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intrusion Detection has emerged as a powerful component of network security systems. A wide range of hardware and software components exist to meet most basic security needs on all platforms. These systems log system usage that could be considered as a breach of security in many networks. However, signature based intrusion detection systems have one catastrophic downfall, in that the number of alerts being logged can quickly outgrow the amount of resources necessary to investigate this anomalous behavior. This thesis explores the use of a fuzzy logic based analysis engine that gives an overall threat level of an intrusion detection …

Risky Decision Making Assessed With The Gambling Task In Adults With Hiv, David J. Hardy, Charles H. Hinkin, Steven A. Castellon, Andrew J. Levine, Mona N. Lam
Psychological Science Faculty Works
Decision making was assessed using a laboratory gambling task in 67 adults with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV+) and in 19 HIV-seronegative (HIV−) control participants. Neurocognitive test performance across several domains was also analyzed to examine potential cognitive mechanisms of gambling task performance. As predicted, the HIV+ group performed worse on the gambling task, indicating greater risky decision making. Specifically, the HIV+ group selected more cards from the “risky” or disadvantageous deck that included relatively large payoffs but infrequent large penalties. The control group also selected such risky cards but quickly learned to avoid them. Exploratory analyses also indicated that …

Triatomines are insects belonging to the Hemiptera order, Heteroptera suborder, Reduviidae family and Triatominae subfamily. All members of this subfamily are hematophagous. Triatomines evolved from Reduviidae predators and they are probably polyphyletic in origin. The combination of anatomical, physiological and ethological factors observed in this group, as well as the plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters that differentiate the five tribes and fourteen triatomine genera reinforce the polyphiletic hypotesis. However if we consider the five groups of triatomines, the Rhodniini, Cavernicolini, Bolboderini, Linshcosteini and Alberproseniini tribes constitute monophyletic groups, while the Triatomini tribe is considered polyphyletic. The New World is the center …

A rapidly spreading, highly pathogenic avian influenza virus A H5N1 in the domestic poultry population has crossed the species barrier to humans and other mammalian species, thus, posing an increasing pandemic threat. The World Health Organization, other agencies, and countries worldwide are closely monitoring the prevalent influenza viruses and their related illnesses to detect any increased virulence or transmissibility that might signal the beginnings of any future pandemic. So far, the H5N1 virus has infected birds in more than 30 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa, while further geographical spread remains likely. Human infections are still rare and the virus …

Diabetic Foot Infection, Nidal A. Younes, Faris G. Bakri
Saudi Medical Journal
Diabetic foot infection DFI is simply defined as suspected or documented infection of the tissues that comprise the foot of a diabetic patient. Diabetic foot infection is often caused by introduction of an infection into the otherwise sterile soft tissues of the foot through a minor skin break down. Diabetic foot infection may be mild usually restricted to the uppermost layers of the skin, moderate extending down to the soft tissues of the foot or severe infection associated with systemic toxicity or metabolic instability. The paper reviews the types of DFI, pathophysiology, microbiology of DFI, relevant anatomy of the foot, …

As the object of my scientific study, I’ve chosen coprolites. It’s not a common choice, but to a paleonutritionist and archaeoparasitologist, a coprolite—a sample of ancient feces preserved by mineralization or simple drying—is a scientific bonanza. Analysis of coprolites can shed light on both the nutrition of and parasites found in prehistoric cultures. Dietary reconstructions from the analysis of coprolites can inform us about, for example, the origins of modern Native American diabetes. With regard to parasitology; coprolites hold information about the ancient emergence and spread of human infectious disease. Most sensational, however, is the recent role of coprolite analysis …
Acculturation, Locus Of Control, And Glucose Levels Among American Indians With Diabetes, Gennea A. Danks
Acculturation, Locus Of Control, And Glucose Levels Among American Indians With Diabetes, Gennea A. Danks
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes is a critical health care issue for American Indian tribes throughout the United States. Research is increasingly considering the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of the disease, in addition to the physical attributes and consequences of diabetes. One psychological attribute that has been examined in the context of glucose control and response to diabetes treatment is locus of control, with evidence suggesting that locus of control is an important consideration in terms of physical health and compliance among people diagnosed with diabetes (Konen, 1993). The current study attempted to further this line ofresearch by examining the relationship between locus …

Diet And Nutritional Concerns Of Hispanic Americans, Valerie Rawlinson
Diet And Nutritional Concerns Of Hispanic Americans, Valerie Rawlinson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Hispanic Americans are the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States today, at 12.5% of the total U.S. population. They face considerable nutrition-related challenges, of which dietitians and other nutrition professionals who serve this population need to be aware. Their diet goes through drastic, rapid changes soon after immigration to the United States, many of which have a strong negative impact on their health, putting them at greater risk for obesity and chronic diseases than the general population. In addition to diet and disease, Hispanic Americans face other issues that hinder their ability to benefit from nutritional counseling, …

Antimicrobial Properties Of Syringopeptin 25a And Rhamnolipids, Prerak T. Desai
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The increasing bacterial resistance to available antibiotics requires the search for new antibacterial compounds to be broadened. This study investigated the antimicrobial properties of two secondary metabolites from fluorescent pseudomonads -- syringopeptin 25A, a lipodepsipeptide produced by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, and a rhamnolipid mixture produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The rate of antimicrobial action was determined by monitoring the rate of uptake of propidium iodide during exposure to the compounds. Inhibition was also confirmed by the microbroth dilution method to determine the MI Cs. Both the compounds inhibited growth of Gram-positive organisms, including Mycobacterium smegmatis, staphylococci, and …

Assessing Student Learning Outcomes In Health Professions Service -Learning Courses, Tracey K. Anderson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Service learning is a pedagogical method that is currently on the rise in health professions schools as a method of meeting Healthy People 2010 objectives (Narsavage, Lindell, Chen, Savin & Duffy, 2002). The intended result for participating students is an increased awareness of health care issues, civic responsibility, and course content in this learning experience. However, there is no clear assessment documentation that shows health professions students are meeting the intended learning outcomes. Eyler (2000) indicates that outcomes in service learning have not been "well studied and relatively little attention has been given to defining learning outcomes that would be …

Regulation Of Polymeric Immunoglobulin Receptor By Reovirus In Intestinal Epithelial Cells, Kasturi Pal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most pathogens invade the human body through mucosal surfaces. Enteric viruses are one such group of pathogens that are of great public health significance because they cause a number of serious diseases including gastroenteritis, hepatitis and poliomyelitis. Gastrointestinal disease is the second most common cause of morbidity worldwide, with diarrhea ranking first among infectious diseases in the categories of frequency and mortality in children. The mucosal epithelium provides the first line of defense against invading pathogens by serving as the first sensors of microbial infection and launching an innate immune response that leads to the development of adaptive immunity. An …
