Influence Of Foreign Media On Fashion In Young Adults In Pakistan, Arif Hasan, Shaza Bari Jul 2006

Influence Of Foreign Media On Fashion In Young Adults In Pakistan, Arif Hasan, Shaza Bari

Business Review

The extent of the influence of Indian media on fashion choices is studied by finding the underlying feelings and motives behind fashion product purchase decisions for young female adults. The results showed that the influence of Indian media on fashion choices is minimal and does not lead to an active search for a particular product. Rather, the exposure is used to make a decision when they are faced with a choice between a product seen on the media versus another product. Accessories are more easily adapted than clothes, which are too glamorized. The soap dramas are more popular among the …

Eminent Domain Reform In Missouri: A Legislative Memoir, Dale A. Whitman Jul 2006

Eminent Domain Reform In Missouri: A Legislative Memoir, Dale A. Whitman

Faculty Publications

The Missouri General Assembly, like a number of other state legislatures, undertook to reform its statutes relating to eminent domain during the 2006 legislative session. This article is the story of that effort and an analysis of the result. I write from a personal perspective. I was fortunate to have been personally involved in many of the decisions that were made as the bill, House Bill 1944, made its was through the legislative process. This opportunity was, I think, fairly unusual for a law professor; in thirty-seven years of teaching property law, I had never previously been so closely engaged …

Entry Level Therapists’ Perceived Readiness To Prescribe Low-Technology Adaptive Equipment To Geriatric Populations, Russell Wood

Masters Theses

In this research entry-level therapists' were questioned about their readiness to prescribe low-technology adaptive equipment to geriatric populations. The analysis of 33 returned questionnaires have been discussed, with the overall results indicating that experience, familiarity, and education of specific equipment are all significantly related to the confidence levels of entry-level therapists in prescribing those equipment.

Additionally, the results of specific analysis for the groups of equipment, namely dressing, bathing and toileting were entertained. Open ended questions regarding equipment usage, follow up and trends are also discussed. Finally prediction equations are shared resulting from statistical analysis.

Is There A Twenty Third Amino Acid In The Genetic Code?, Alexey V. Lobanov, Gregory V. Kryukov, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

The universal genetic code includes 20 common amino acids. In addition, selenocysteine (Sec) and pyrrolysine (Pyl), known as the twenty first and twenty second amino acids, are encoded by UGA and UAG, respectively, which are the codons that usually function as stop signals. The discovery of Sec and Pyl suggested that the genetic code could be further expanded by reprogramming stop codons. To search for the putative twenty third amino acid, we employed various tRNA identification programs that scanned 16 archaeal and 130 bacterial genomes for tRNAs with anticodons corresponding to the three stop signals. Our data suggest that the …

As of December 1, 2006, twenty-eight states have enacted some type of right to cure legislation. On April, 28, 2006, Georgia, one of the twenty-eight, amended its construction defect dispute resolution procedures to clarify the responsibilities of the parties. Pennsylvania attempted to become the twenty-ninth, the bill having passed both houses of the legislature, but the Governor vetoed the bill on March 17. Right to cure legislation was considered in South Dakota, but it was deferred to the 36th Legislative Day on February 8, 2006.

A Therapeutic Collaboration: The Bibliotherapy Education Project At Oregon State University, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Research

Bibliotherapy has been defined many ways and is known by many other names such as biblioguidance, literatherapy, reading therapy, bibliocounseling, bibliopsychology, book matching and literapeutics. Most simply, if one goes back to the Greek roots of the word, it means helping through books. It has been used with all ages, with almost every imaginable issue or problem, and at all levels of intervention by teachers, counselors, librarians, social workers, nurses, psychologists and physicians. Developmental bibliotherapy, for example, can be used in the classroom where the goal may be to facilitate normal developmental passages or to educate about attitudes, feelings and …

Brain Tumor Stem Cells: Role In Neuro-Oncogenesis And Therapeutic Implications, Muhammad Zeeshan Ozair, Adil Hameed Khan, Ather Enam

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Malignant brain tumors are notorious for high morbidity and mortality. Our deficient understanding of brain tumor pathogenesis is reflected in our inability to cure this disease. Treatment remains palliative at best. The cancer stem cell hypothesis of brain tumors promises to consolidate many observations which have previously eluded neuroscientists and may reveal why aberrations in developmental programs are among the commonest findings in brain tumors. It is ironic that brain ontogeny and cancer - two processes with very different outcomes - exploit similar mechanisms to multiply, migrate, and survive. Implications of this hypothesis extend beyond mere academic interest. It may explain …

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

The following essay is excerpted from an article published at 32 Ohion Northern University Law Review 287 (2006) and appears here with permission. The complete article expresses the author's skepticism about the meaning of many of the findings reported by proponents of the "humanizing legal education" initiative, and in detail dissects the research methods and conclusions of studies done by G. Andrew H. Benjamin et al in 1986 and by Keenon M. Sheldon and Lawrence S. Krieger in 2004. In the last 20 years much has been written about the deleterious effect that law school has on the mental well-being …

Review Of The Modern World Of Neith Boyce: Autobiography And Diaries. Ed. Carol Deboer-Langworthy., Mary Jo Binker Jul 2006

Review Of The Modern World Of Neith Boyce: Autobiography And Diaries. Ed. Carol Deboer-Langworthy., Mary Jo Binker

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Recent scholarship has focused on Boyce's relationship with Hapgood as the prototype of the modern open marriage. In her book, Intimate Warriors, editor Ellen Kay Trimberger uses portions of both writers' works to argue that the couple's "warfare" (33)-over his affairs, her desire to work, and his aversion to working at all-enhanced her creativity and kept the marriage alive. l Carol DeBoer-Langworthy takes the opposite view. In her book, The Modern World of Neith Boyce, she argues that Boyce's difficult marriage jeopardized her health, sapped her creative energy, and ultimately shortened her career. She maintains that Boyce's autobiographical writings, published …

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda Jul 2006

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Previous research has shown that there are not distinct career lines leading to the chief academic officer (CAO) position in community colleges. Rather, it appears that a variety of skills and experiences contribute to advancement to this position. This paper examines the perceptions of women CAOs as to the importance of professional development activities to their career advancement. Responses from women community college CAOs from nine states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming) indicate that current position holders perceive that a number of professional development experiences were important to their advancement to the CAO position.

The Issues And Realities Of Brt Planning Initiatives In Developing Asian Cities, Moazzem Hossain Jul 2006

The Issues And Realities Of Brt Planning Initiatives In Developing Asian Cities, Moazzem Hossain

Journal of Public Transportation

Successful Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) planning initiatives in Latin American cities involved complex interactions among stakeholders, politicians and planners. Asian cities under different geo-political settings may not be able to achieve successful BRT planning initiatives under similar circumstances. This paper reviews the recent mass transit planning initiatives, especially BRT planning initiatives, in Asian cities and identifies the issues and realities of such initiatives in different regions of Asia. The prospect, suitability and importance of BRT as a sustainable mass transit system for Asian cities are also discussed. Guidelines are suggested for probable successful BRT planning initiatives under different geo-political contexts …

Two Spirits, Two Eras, Same Sex: For A Traditionalist Perspective On Native American Tribal Same-Sex Marriage Policy, Jeffrey S. Jacobi Jul 2006

Two Spirits, Two Eras, Same Sex: For A Traditionalist Perspective On Native American Tribal Same-Sex Marriage Policy, Jeffrey S. Jacobi

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Recently, several states amended their constitutions to define marriage as only a union between a man and a woman. Many Native American Indian tribal governments thereafter also adopted laws prohibiting homosexual marriages. However, this new policy conflicts with traditional tribal values. This Note shows that historically many tribes accepted and even honored same-sex unions. This Note proposes that tribes consider their traditions as they existed before European contact, and argues that, for some tribes, same-sex civil unions are a historically and culturally appropriate answer to the modern objections to same-sex marriage.
