Reverse Decision Making And Goal Attainment A Proof Of Concept As A New Approach To The Decision Making Process Under Uncertainty, Shitalkumar S. Sabne Oct 2006

Reverse Decision Making And Goal Attainment A Proof Of Concept As A New Approach To The Decision Making Process Under Uncertainty, Shitalkumar S. Sabne

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Decision making occurs when one must choose among alternatives. However, in uncertain environments where problems are complex and decision makers lack complete knowledge of the situation as well as decision alternatives, it's not possible for them to select an optimal decision outcome by 'Traditional Decision Approaches'. At present Reverse Decision Making is the central, although new and unproved, approach of Old Dominion University's Engineering Management and Systems Engineering research on decision making process for uncertain and complex situations. Even though research in decision making spans over one hundred years, there are still important problems which remain to be addressed.

Endocarditis And Biofilm-Associated Pili Of Enterococcus Faecalis, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Kavindra V Singh, Jouko Sillanpää, Danielle A Garsin, Magnus Höök, Stanley L Erlandsen, Barbara E Murray

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Increasing multidrug resistance in Enterococcus faecalis, a nosocomial opportunist and common cause of bacterial endocarditis, emphasizes the need for alternative therapeutic approaches such as immunotherapy or immunoprophylaxis. In an earlier study, we demonstrated the presence of antibodies in E. faecalis endocarditis patient sera to recombinant forms of 9 E. faecalis cell wall-anchored proteins; of these, we have now characterized an in vivo-expressed locus of 3 genes and an associated sortase gene (encoding sortase C; SrtC). Here, using mutation analyses and complementation, we demonstrated that both the ebp (encoding endocarditis and biofilm-associated pili) operon and srtC are important for biofilm production …

Whole Systems Inquiry: Designing Large Educational Events, Ray D. William, Molly Engle, Peter B. Goodell, Carrie Koplinka-Loehr Oct 2006

Whole Systems Inquiry: Designing Large Educational Events, Ray D. William, Molly Engle, Peter B. Goodell, Carrie Koplinka-Loehr

Journal of Extension

Whole systems inquiry (WSI) helps people see complex topics as functional activities with inputs, outputs, interactions, and performance of the system over time. The authors used WSI to design a national symposium with 800 attendees who responded to two questions at the end of 70 topical sessions. Responses were aggregated onto a mega-map, synthesized into themes, and drawn as an emerging system. Work groups compared emerging themes with national priorities while individual participants evaluated utility in their disciplinary programs. We conclude that large meetings can be designed as functional systems with participation, synthesis, and evaluation of intentional learning.

Using Updates To Educate Policy Makers About Water Programs At Land-Grant Institutions, Robert L. Mahler, Robert Simmons, Fred Sorensen, Michael Cochrane

Journal of Extension

We developed a regional two-page color newsletter called PNWWATER UPDATE that focuses on specific water resource issues in the Pacific Northwest to meet the needs of our stakeholders. This newsletter is distributed to our congressional delegation and all state legislators serving on education, environment, or agriculture committees. Fifty-seven policy makers on our mailing list for the last 2 years evaluated the value of this newsletter. In general, policy makers found the newsletter to be of high quality, timely, and informative, and thought that it addressed the water quality priorities in the region.

Grey Suit Or Brown Carhartt: Narrative Transition, Relocation, And Reorientation In The Lives Of Corporate Refugees, Brian Hoey Oct 2006

Grey Suit Or Brown Carhartt: Narrative Transition, Relocation, And Reorientation In The Lives Of Corporate Refugees, Brian Hoey

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research

This article examines relocation stories of people who leave behind corporate work culture, relocate from metropolitan areas to small towns and rural places, and attempt to reorient themselves to work and family obligations. Decisions to start over take place within the context of moral questions about what makes a life worth living and what does not through a process in which geography has a bearing. For these migrants, a choice about where to live is also one about how to live. Choices of how to live one's life are made of more than simple economics, they are also moral. The …

Private Law And State-Making In The Age Of Globalization, Daniela Caruso Oct 2006

Private Law And State-Making In The Age Of Globalization, Daniela Caruso

Faculty Scholarship

The rise of post-national entities, such as the institutions of the European Union and of free-trade regimes, bears no obvious relation to the traditional pillars of western private law (mostly contracts, torts, and property doctrines). The claim of this article is that the global diffusion of private law discourse contributes significantly to the emergence of new centers of authority in the global arena. The article tests the impact of private law arguments in three contexts - the growing legitimacy of regional human rights adjudication, the consolidation of the institutions of the European Union, and the higher binding force of international …

Prophylaxis And Therapy Of Inhalational Anthrax By A Novel Monoclonal Antibody To Protective Antigen That Mimics Vaccine-Induced Immunity, Laura Vitale, Diann Blanset, Israel Lowy, Thomas O'Neill, Joel Goldstein, Stephen F. Little, Gerard P. Andrews, Gary Dorough, Ronald K. Taylor, Tibor Keler

Dartmouth Scholarship

The neutralizing antibody response to the protective antigen (PA) component of anthrax toxin elicited by approved anthrax vaccines is an accepted correlate for vaccine-mediated protection against anthrax. We reasoned that a human anti-PA monoclonal antibody (MAb) selected on the basis of superior toxin neutralization activity might provide potent protection against anthrax. The fully human MAb (also referred to as MDX-1303 or Valortim) was chosen from a large panel of anti-PA human MAbs generated using transgenic mice immunized with recombinant PA solely on the basis of in vitro anthrax toxin neutralization. This MAb was effective in prophylactic and postsymptomatic treatment of …

India’S Rise As A Software Power: Governmental Policy Factors, Tad Drozdowski, Hai Huynh, Brian Lininger, Yicheng Peng, Naruedom Sakulyong

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

The Indian government’s policies toward an open, global market, support of educational institutions, and enhancement of appropriate infrastructure helped enable their software industry to become critical components of India’s economic growth in the 1990s. The Technical, Organizational, and Personal perspective (T, O, and P) model is utilized to examine different affects that each perspective, inclusive of government policies, has on a socio-technical system (Software development in India). The Indian government has provided substantial economic liberalization to support their software industries, though continued reform is necessary to ensure that they remain a software superpower.

Globalization And Genocidalism: Fictional Discourse Without Borders (For Fun And Profit), Aleksandar Jokić, Tiphaine Dickson

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay we explore the relationship between globalization and genocidalism. “Globalization” is understood as “freedom and ability of individuals and firms to initiate voluntary economic transactions with residents of other countries,” while “genocidalism” is defined as “(i) the purposeful neglect to attribute responsibility for genocide in cases when overwhelming evidence exists, and as (ii) the energetic attributions of “genocide” in less then clear cases without considering available and convincing opposing evidence and argumentation.”

The hypothesis that we defend here as explanatory of globalization’s “surprising” failure to live up to its often repeated theoretical promise that it is not a …

Transportation Financing Opportunities For The State Of California, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Jennifer Dill, Todd Mitchel Goldman, John Hall, Franziska Holtzman, Joe Recker, Eileen Goodwin

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Significant investments will be required to maintain, operate, upgrade, and expand California's transportation infrastructure if the state is to retain its economic position in the global economy and accommodate a projected near doubling of the current population by 2040. At the same time, available funding for transportation will decline significantly over the next 15 years if the current transportation finance system remains unchanged. This report analyzes a range of alternative sources of revenue, as well as different finance options. The research is based upon reviews of existing literature, interviews with key stakeholders, and two statewide phone surveys. The facility-based sources …

The Economic Impact Of Early Life Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure: Early Intervention For Developmental Delay, Thaddeus R. Miller, Virginia A. Rauh, Sherry A. M. Glied, Dale Hattis, Andrew Rundle, Howard Andrews, Frederica Perera

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early-life exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) can result in developmental delay as well as childhood asthma and increased risk of cancer. The high cost of childhood asthma related to ETS exposure has been widely recognized; however, the economic impact of ETS-related developmental delay has been less well understood.

METHODS AND RESULTS:The Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) has reported adverse effects of prenatal ETS exposure on child development in a cohort of minority women and children in New York City (odds ratio of developmental delay = 2.36; 95% confidence interval 1.22-4.58). Using the environmentally …

The Scappoose School District (SSD) in northwestern Oregon serves the City of Scappoose and the southeastern portion of Columbia County, as well as the extreme northwestern portion of Multnomah County and a small piece of Washington County. The area served by the District has experienced population growth in recent years, but overall school enrollment losses in two of the past five years have negated the gains in the other three years. This report presents the results of a forecast conducted by the Portland State University Population Research Center (PRC) indicating that SSD enrollment will increase during the next fifteen years, …

Perceptions Of Youth Risk And Safety Education: A Survey Of Farm Safety Day Camp Participants And Their Parents, Glen Arnold, Dee Jepsen, Jason Hedrick Oct 2006

Perceptions Of Youth Risk And Safety Education: A Survey Of Farm Safety Day Camp Participants And Their Parents, Glen Arnold, Dee Jepsen, Jason Hedrick

Journal of Extension

Farm Safety Day Camps are popular educational formats for teaching safety awareness to rural youth audiences. Surveys were administered to 3rd graders and their parents following a safety day camp program to determine the amount of exposure the youth had to six identified rural hazards. Data showed that students are capable of self-reporting their exposure rate and risk of injury and that they are capable of following safety rules 91.8% of the time. Most parents (80%) revealed that the program was a beneficial experience for their children and reported a preference to general safety topics as opposed to farm-related topics.

Value Of Good Foods For Good Health Community Partnership, Deborah L. Angell Oct 2006

Value Of Good Foods For Good Health Community Partnership, Deborah L. Angell

Journal of Extension

County partnerships are always an asset to Extension but can be especially important during challenging budget times. During these times, partnerships with the local Parks and Recreation Department, and county General Health District have made offering monthly Good Foods for Good Health programs possible. These programs emphasize healthy food choices and safe food handling practices. Determining the dollar value of these partnerships provides valuable information to share with stakeholders and illustrates how all partners involved benefit when we work together instead of in competition with each other.
