As a result of intense ground battles and extensive bombing during the Indo-China War, especially during the years 1964 – 1973, Lao PDR has the distinction of being, per capita, the most heavily bombed nation in the world. The war left widespread unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination, which thirty years on continues to act as a barrier to socio economic development causing death and injury to adults and children. UXO injury, especially in a country such as Lao PDR where access to adequate health services is limited, can result in long-term medical and psychological sequelae (Handicap International, 2004) as well as …

The Locomotor Kinematics Of Asian And African Elephants: Changes With Speed And Size, John R. Hutchinson, Delf Schwerda, Daniel J. Famini, Robert H.I. Dale, Martin S. Fischer, Rodger Kram
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
For centuries, elephant locomotion has been a contentious and confusing challenge for locomotion scientists to understand, not only because of technical difficulties but also because elephant locomotion is in some ways atypical of more familiar quadrupedal gaits. We analyzed the locomotor kinematics of over 2400 strides from 14 African and 48 Asian elephant individuals (body mass 116-4632 kg) freely moving over ground at a 17-fold range of speeds, from slow walking at 0.40 m s-1 to the fastest reliably recorded speed for elephants, 6.8 m s-1. These data reveal that African and Asian elephants have some subtle …

The Sensitivity To Motion Sickness Induced By Aircraft And Flight Training Devices And The Role Of Experience During Flight Training, Angela M. Baskin
The Sensitivity To Motion Sickness Induced By Aircraft And Flight Training Devices And The Role Of Experience During Flight Training, Angela M. Baskin
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The incidence and severity of motion sickness, which can be incapacitating and can prevent training, is ill-established in career paths where motion or simulated motion is commonplace. To assess different aspects of this problem, each of 175 Embry-Riddle student pilots early in their training and 43 Embry-Riddle student non-pilots participated in one of four parts of this study. The Motion History Questionnaire was utilized to compare pilot and non-pilot groups on reported motion sickness sensitivity; non-pilots reported significantly more sensitivity than did pilots for 3 out of 7 items included in the composite score, suggesting possible career self-selection (though composite …

Pfiesteria Hysteria, Agriculture, And Water Quality In The Chesapeake Bay: The Extension Bridge Over Troubled Waters, De Terlizzi
Pfiesteria Hysteria, Agriculture, And Water Quality In The Chesapeake Bay: The Extension Bridge Over Troubled Waters, De Terlizzi
Journal of Extension
Public fear of environmental problems from toxic chemicals to toxic microbes can lead to overreaction in consumer behavior and public policy. When the dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida became synonymous with water quality degradation in the Chesapeake Bay and was linked to human health concerns, the agricultural and environmental communities were polarized. Public fear in spite of relatively low risk led to the passage of the Water Quality Improvement Act in 1998. An Extension education program to reduce public fear and clarify the science is presented as a case study of Extension education in the midst of conflict over environmental issues.

Stress, Coping, Social Support, And Prostate Cancer Risk Among Older African American And Caucasian Men, Ann L. Coker, Maureen Sanderson, Gary L. Ellison, Mary Kay Fadden
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Objectives: While psychosocial stress and high effort coping have been associated with reduced immune function, no epidemiologic study has addressed psychological stress and risk of prostate cancer. The purpose of this analysis was to investigate the association between stress, coping, social support, and risk of prostate cancer among older men (age 65–79 years). Design: Population-based case-control study in South Carolina.
Participants: Cases were 400 incident, histologically confirmed prostate cancer cases identified through the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry between 1999 and 2001 (70.6% response rate). Controls were 385 men identified through the 1999 Health Care Financing Administration Medicare beneficiary file …

Kentucky Haz Alerts--Tractors/Logging
To prevent injuries while felling trees:
- Loggers should attend the Kentucky Master Logger program for training and education regarding Occupational Safety and Health Administration logging standards and safety procedures.
- A “pre-job safety plan” should be developed for each job site and the plan should be reviewed prior to each day on the site.
- Proper notching and directional felling techniques should be utilized when felling trees.
- Develop a felling plan for each tree prior to felling that includes escape route, dead or hanging branches, vines, and nearby trees.

Polymorphism Of Hla-Dr And Hla-Dq In Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients And Clinical Response To Methotrexate--A Hospital-Based Study, Azra Arif I Ali, Tariq Moatter, Jawed Altaf Baig, Ahmed Iqbal, Azmat Hussain, Mohammad Perwaiz Iqbal
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Objective: To investigate the frequency and distribution of DRB1 and DQB1 alleles in Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and analyze the relationship between clinical response to methotrexate (MTX) and the HLA-DR and HLA-DQ genotypes in these patients.
Methods: In this case-control study, the HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 polymorphism in 91 RA patients and 91 healthy controls was done using polymerase chain reaction and sequence specific primers.
Results: There was no statistical difference in frequencies of HLA-DRB1*03, DRB1*04, DRB1*07, DRB1*10, DRB1*11, DRB1*12, DRB1*13, DRB1*14, DRB1*15 and DRB1*16 genotypes between patients and controls. However, DRB1*01 was found to be significantly more common (p=0.015) …

Staying Alive: North American Competitiveness And The Challenge Of Asia, Stephen Blank, Stephanie R. Golob, Guy Stanley
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
While analyses of "North American integration" after NAFTA continue to stress outdated notions of country-to-country trade and the exchange of finished products across national borders, our paper starts from the premise that what we have now is a single, integrated regional economic system whose expansion has followed the pace and contours of business strategies emphasizing continentally-integrated supply chains, but whose management via regulatory and policy coordination has lagged dangerously behind. Most dangerous of all has been the massive gap between our region's infrastructure needs – ports, transportation, and borders – and what has been coordinated and facilitated by the public …
