Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach Oct 2006

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Differentiated instruction (DI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are philosophies that serve as teaching methodologies that address the needs of diverse learners in the regular classroom. Furthermore, DI can be used to engage students in instruction through different modalities, appeal to different interests, and use varied rates of instruction along with varied degrees of complexity. Also, UDL is an extension of DI, wherein the teacher provides alternatives that are built into the curriculum and suitable for most students. Additionally, the UDL model can be supported by the six principles of effective curriculum (Kame'emui & Simmons, 1999) to design curricular …

The Role Of Transportation In Selected Syracuse Child Care Centers, Syracuse University. Maxwell School. Community Benchmarks Program Oct 2006

The Role Of Transportation In Selected Syracuse Child Care Centers, Syracuse University. Maxwell School. Community Benchmarks Program

Community Benchmarks Program

This study examines the role of transportation for families with children enrolled in child care in Syracuse, New York. The focus of this report is 10 child care centers registered with Child Care Solutions of Onondaga County. The 10 centers were selected because 80% of the children enrolled are part of the federal free or reduced price lunch program. Child Care Solutions wanted to focus on this population because it has particular concern about enrollment in centers serving low-income children. One large inner-city center closed last spring due to lack of enrollment, a second came close to closing, and there …

In The Shadowlands: Fisher And The Outpatient Civil Commitment Of “Sexually Violent Predators” In Texas, Ronnie Hall Oct 2006

In The Shadowlands: Fisher And The Outpatient Civil Commitment Of “Sexually Violent Predators” In Texas, Ronnie Hall

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Note will suggest some possible improvements to Texas's approach to handling the offenders it and other states have chosen to label "sexually violent predators," including the option that Texas replace its SVP statute with an inpatient civil commitment regime similar to those in other states. Part II of this Note will reflect some historical background behind civil commitment, including the traditional rationales underlying it, the early emphasis on procedural due process in nineteenth century American jurisprudence, and the development of commitment laws specifically aimed at sex offenders in the twentieth century. Part III will address the state of the …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2006-10-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Racial Identity: Toward An Integrated Developmental Psychological Perspective, Anthony L. Burrow, Jonathan G. Tubman, Marilyn J. Montgomery Oct 2006

Racial Identity: Toward An Integrated Developmental Psychological Perspective, Anthony L. Burrow, Jonathan G. Tubman, Marilyn J. Montgomery

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This article outlines current knowledge and lines of research regarding racial identity and, in particular, African American racial identity. A developmental psychological framework is proposed as a means of integrating and synthesizing 2 lines of racial identity research that have emerged within the existing literature: (a) the developmental line of research and (b) the adjustment outcome line of research. The proposed integration of the current racial identity research will emphasize the interdependency of developmental mechanisms, outcome processes, and identity trajectories among minority individuals, and highlight the significance of those identities for individuals across their life spans. Potential benefits of integrating …

Acquiring Land Use Rights In Today's China: A Snapshot From On The Ground, Gregory M. Stein

Scholarly Works

For the interested observer of real estate markets, China is the most fascinating place in the world today, and the coming years promise to be no less intriguing than the recent past has been. This Article offers an overview of how a specific segment of the Chinese real estate market - the acquisition of land use rights - operates in practice, from both a legal and business perspective.

I recently interviewed dozens of Chinese and Western experts who are taking part in one of the greatest real estate booms in world history. My conversations with these real estate developers, bankers, …

Voices From The Closet: Male Homosexuality And Dual Identity In The Republic Of Cyprus, Tasia Jelatis-Hoke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

What is the relationship between semiotics and gay identities in the Republic of Cyprus? I initially planned to explore the complex relationship between language, and more specifically semiotics and gay male identity in Greek Cypriots. Early in my research, however, I realized that a lot of background research was required before I would be able to do this sort of in-depth analysis. In addition, after becoming aware of the deep colonial legacy left to homosexuals in Cyprus I was reluctant to use the work of European theorists to analyze a post-colonial space. I also came across a pertinent assertion of …

Feminist Justice In Practice: Witness Experiences Of Survivors Of Wartime Sexual Violence In The Sud Bih, Brett A. Smith-Hams

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Wartime sexual violence is currently being prosecuted in numerous legal institutions across the world. In order for survivors of this sexual violence to have the best possible experiences, many improvements in the care, protection, and support of those who come forward to testify in these institutions need to be made. This study looks at the practices of one particular legal institution, the National Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is currently in the midst of trying several war crimes cases, many of which involve incidents of mass, systematic sexual violence as part of a larger military campaign in the region …

Social Security: From Then To Now, 70 Years Of Growth, Patricia Miller Selvy

Accounting Historians Notebook

Today, just as in 1935, there appears to be a fundamental belief in American society that those who have worked and made contributions into a retirement system should have some assurance that they will not be left unprotected by our government once they have reached an age where they cannot work. The problem we are facing as a society is one of determining how to offer retirees income protection while not taxing our shrinking working population too heavily. There are many proposals being debated on how to fix the system, but before decisions are made on how to restructure our …

A Good Lesson For Texas: Learning How To Adequately Assist Languageminorities Learn English, Sandra Cortes Oct 2006

A Good Lesson For Texas: Learning How To Adequately Assist Languageminorities Learn English, Sandra Cortes

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment argues that Texas should restructure current programs or adopt an entirely different linguistic program to better address the needs of limited English proficiency students. Bilingual education programs that have been proven to be ineffective in Texas and other states should not be allowed to continue to fail languageminority students. However, the best solution might not be to adopt an English-immersion program; rather, Texas should begin to structure a program that truly focuses, addresses, and remedies the needs of language-minority students.

Escape Denied: The Gretna Bridge And The Government’S Armed Blockade In The Wake Of Katrina, Rebecca Eaton Oct 2006

Escape Denied: The Gretna Bridge And The Government’S Armed Blockade In The Wake Of Katrina, Rebecca Eaton

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The police officers who blocked the Gretna Bridge may have in fact violated several rights guaranteed by the Constitution. However, this Comment focuses on only one-the right to the freedom of travel. This Comment argues that the City of Gretna should be held civilly liable for its actions; and, that the individual police officers who blocked the bridge should be held both civilly and criminally liable for their actions. By blocking the bridge, the officers intentionally deprived New Orleans residents of their right to the freedom of travel. Part II contextualizes this argument by providing a history of the poverty …

Corruption In Montenegro Untangling The Knot, Anna Lipton Galbraith Oct 2006

Corruption In Montenegro Untangling The Knot, Anna Lipton Galbraith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Corruption in Montenegro exists on various levels. The focus of this paper is high level corruption, particularly conflict of interest cases regarding privatization processes, spatial planning and the procurement of public contracts. The reason for this focus is that the abuse of power by the government is one of the largest obstacles to creating a democratic environment of trust and a society structured around the rule of law. These are the primary areas were the government of Montenegro continues to exert inappropriate influence. The first section of the paper will analyze the origins of corruption and attempt to simultaneously provide …
