Servant-Leadership: A Model Aligned With Chaos Theory, Mark Rennaker
Servant-Leadership: A Model Aligned With Chaos Theory, Mark Rennaker
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Greenleaf (1977) proposed the true test of servant-leadership as leaders reproducing their inclination to serve in others. However, current servantleadership models do not clearly demonstrate such generativity. By modifying the Patterson (2003 )-Winston (2003) servant-leadership model to demonstrate more clearly the reproduction of the service inclination both in dyadic and in organizational dimensions, this study will contribute to servant-leadership "theory-building" (Lynham, 2002, p. 221). The proposed servant-leadership model, aligned with chaos theory, will give scholars and practitioners a better understanding of the practice and effect of servantleadership.
How Is Your Leadership Changing?, Margaret Wheatley
How Is Your Leadership Changing?, Margaret Wheatley
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
I'm sad to report that in the past few years, ever since uncertainty became our insistent 21st century companion, leadership has taken a great leap backwards to the familiar territory of command and control. Some of this was to be expected, because humans usually default to the known when confronted with the unknown. Some of it was a surprise, because so many organizations had focused on innovation, quality, learning organizations, and human motivation. How did they fail to learn that whenever you impose control on people and situations, you only succeed in turning people into non-creative, shut-down and cynical workers?

Perspectives Of Key Stakeholders With Regard To Extended School Year Programs, Billie E. Bonnett
Perspectives Of Key Stakeholders With Regard To Extended School Year Programs, Billie E. Bonnett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is growing concern about the impact of summer vacation on the academic achievement of our children, especially those with special needs. In recognition of the magnitude of this problem, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), 1999, described the need for extended school year services. Additionally, IDEA, 2004, sought to clarify and further define extended school year services. This addition to IDEA provides guidance, but it does not change the previous provisions. Research suggests that effective extended school year programs include essential components: child centeredness, family involvement, community involvement and school commitment. Despite these regulations, key stakeholders including teachers, …

An In-Vitro Investigation Of Frictional Resistance Of Self-Ligating And Ceramic Brackets When Subjected To Different Ligation Methods And Tipping Angles, Todd S. Bovenizer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Objectives. To investigate the frictional resistance of two new ceramic brackets, two self-ligating bracket, and one standard stainless steel bracket with several methods of ligation. The size and composition of the archwires will also be varied. The wires used are all stainless steel and the sizes are .018, 19X25, and 21X25. The frictional forces obtained in this study will be more useful when compared in a relative manner to one another, as opposed to the actual forces that will be measured. Methods. Each bracket and wire was placed in an Instron machine and tested for 120 seconds. During this time …
Student Beliefs And Self-Reported Juvenile Deliquency: A Test Of General Strain Theory, Jacqueline Nicole Canady
Student Beliefs And Self-Reported Juvenile Deliquency: A Test Of General Strain Theory, Jacqueline Nicole Canady
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study is to test Robert Agnew's General Strain Theory. The researcher applied the theory to secondary data of high school sophomores utilizing Educational Longitudinal Survey of 2002. The study sought to understand whether Agnew's strain theory is applicable to high school environments. The findings indicate some support for Agnew's Revised Strain Theory. Conversely, sex is substantially insignificant concerning self-reported juvenile delinquency within schools. Furthermore, without accounting for students' upbringing and socioeconomic background Agnew's General Strain Theory cannot explain differences in race and delinquency. In conclusion, the study suggests further research of Agnew's theory, concerning both race …
Does Physical Disability Truly Create Impairment In Adjustment To College Life?, Jennifer R. Hurst
Does Physical Disability Truly Create Impairment In Adjustment To College Life?, Jennifer R. Hurst
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research utilized a mixed methods design to explore the differences between students with and without disabilities in perceived social support, coping style, self efficacy, and college adjustment. In addition, the influence of athletic participation on the above variables was examined in the sub-sample of students with disabilities. Neither survey nor interview results supported any differences between students with disabilities and students without disabilities on the study variables. Results suggested that discrepancies in college outcome variables (i.e. matriculation and persistence) were not a result of differences in disability status, but are the result of differences in adjustment, perceived social support, …

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Latex Modified Concrete For Bridge Deck Overlays, Dony Cherian Oommen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Latex modified concrete deck overlay systems are used nationwide. However, cracking, spalling and delamination have been observed both in the case of old and new bridge deck construction. Such problems have also been observed even before a newly constructed bridge deck has been opened to traffic.;In this investigation, the effect of reinforcing Latex Modified Concrete (LMC) with carbon fibers is examined. The study focuses on formulation of the mix design and laboratory test methods to evaluate the potential of using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Latex Modified Concrete (CFLMC) for bridge deck overlays. A tension test method of concrete was perfected during …

Comparing Mothers And Fathers On Acceptability Of Parent-Training Approaches, Knowledge Of Behavioral Principles, And Parenting Behaviors, Jennifer D. Tiano
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although most child research is conducted with mothers as the primary source of data, results often are applied to fathers. Yet, mothers and fathers engage in different interactions with children and may have varying attitudes and knowledge of parenting. This project compared mothers and fathers on a variety of parenting measures. Participants included a community sample of 80 parents (40 mother-father pairs) and their male child between the ages of two and seven. This study evaluated potential differences between mothers and fathers on treatment acceptability, knowledge of behavioral principles, and observed parenting behaviors. Results indicated that mothers prefer response cost …

Influence Of Biotransformation On Trophic Transfer Of The Pah, Fluoranthene, Annemette Palmqvist, Lene Juel Rasmussen, Valery E. Forbes
Valery Forbes Publications
The persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine sediments may be influenced by benthic invertebrate bioturbation. Through processes such as deposit-feeding and enhancement of microbial metabolic activity PAHs may be remobilized from the sediment compartment, and either transferred to organisms at higher trophic levels or to the overlying water column, both processes inevitably changing the bioavailability of the PAH. Accumulation of contaminants from one level in the food chain to the next depends on feeding rate and assimilation efficiency, two factors that basically vary with food quality and contaminant type. Though it is generally believed that pre-consumptive biotransformation will …

The present experiments are part of a larger study designed to investigate the influence of husbandry parameters on the life history of the ramshorn snail, Marisa cornuarietis, in order to identify suitable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi-generation populations in the laboratory for use in ecotoxicological testing. In this paper we focus on the effects of a combination of food types and feeding frequencies (i.e., the frequency with which the snails were offered food) on juvenile growth and survival at different temperatures. Offspring produced in the laboratory by wild specimens of M. cornuarietis, from Puerto Rico, were used to …
Ecology In A Cost-Benefit Society: The Issues, Valery E. Forbes, Peter Calow
Ecology In A Cost-Benefit Society: The Issues, Valery E. Forbes, Peter Calow
Valery Forbes Publications
Is there a role for ecology in a cost-benefit society? As a prelude to a collection of papers arising from a conference on this theme held at Roskilde University in June 2004, this paper summarizes divergent approaches to public policy decision making. Whether based on strict cost-benefit analysis or wide-ranging discussion, we make the point that decisions need to be informed by an understanding of the causes behind environmental problems and their consequences, through impaired ecosystem services, on the economy. Taking this forward will require forums that bring ecologists, economists, and regulators into active and constructive dialogue.

These experiments are part of a larger study designed to investigate the influence of husbandry parameters on the life history of the apple snail, Marisa cornuarietis. The overall objective of the program is to identify suitable husbandry conditions for maintaining multigeneration populations of this species in the laboratory for use in ecotoxicological testing. In this article, we focus on the effects of photoperiod, temperature, and population density on adult fecundity and juvenile growth. Increasing photoperiod from 12 to 16 h of light per day had no effect on adult fecundity or egg hatching and relatively minor effects on juvenile growth …

[First Paragraph] In his famous interview with the American journalist Robert H. Sherard in 1894, Jules Verne, nearing the end of his life, regretted not being able to see America one last time. "I should have liked to have gone to Chicago this year," he lamented, "but in the state of my health [...] it was quite impossible. I do so love America and the American," he continued, "As you are writing for America, be sure to tell them that if they love me- as I know they do, for I receive thousands of letters every year from the States- …

Hemoptysis, A Developing World Perspective, Omer Ashraf
Hemoptysis, A Developing World Perspective, Omer Ashraf
Medical College Documents
Background: Hemoptysis is a significant clinical presentation in respiratory medicine. Often a life threatening emergency, it mandates prompt assessment and intervention. Various investigations and management protocols are proposed globally, to advocate a standardized approach towards patients presenting with hemoptysis. It is the etiology, however, that has been known to influence clinical outcome and prognosis. With marked contrast in geographical patterns of pulmonary pathologies, etiological agents for hemoptysis vary over the world. Studies in West, usually demonstrate neoplastic and non-granulomatous causes to be the leading agents for hemoptysis. The diagnostic accuracy of various investigations and efficacy of management alternatives has been …

Humans infected with West Nile virus (WNV) may clinically present with symptoms that are suggestive of neurological infection. Nearly all treatments of WNV disease have been effective in animal models only if administered before or soon after viral challenge. Here, we evaluated whether a potent neutralizing anti-WNV humanized monoclonal antibody (MAb), hE16, could improve the course of disease in a hamster model when administered after the virus had infected neurons in the brain. Five days after viral injection, WNV was detected in the brains of hamsters by cytopathic assay, quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, and immunohistochemical staining of WNV envelope …

Deconstructing Hate Speech In The Drc: A Psychological Media Sensitization Campaign, Johann Vollhardt, Marie Coutin, Ervin Staub, George Weiss, Johan Deflander
Journal of Hate Studies
This article describes an interdisciplinary and theory-based radio campaign that has been developed to counteract, and sensitize citizens to hate speech in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The article provides a brief overview of the instrumentalization of hate speech and the violent effects it has had in the Great Lakes region of Africa. A summary of the most recent events in the DRC is given. Here, hate speech was used in the presidential election campaigns in 2006, contributing to a polarization of the country and giving the campaign an ethnic underpinning. A radio program developed to counteract hate …
Homophobic Hate Propaganda In Canada, Ellen Faulkner
Homophobic Hate Propaganda In Canada, Ellen Faulkner
Journal of Hate Studies
While the typical hate crime is perceived to be of a violent nature perpetrated by individuals connected to Nazi and neo-Nazi groups and white supremacists, a more insidious form of hatred exists in the form of hate propaganda (Kinsella 1994; Martin 1995; Sher 1983; Sunahara 1981; Abella and Trooper 1982; Barrett 1987; Betcherman 1975; Bolaria and Li 1985; Frideres 1976). In Canada “hate messages take a variety of forms including flaming crosses, heckling at memorial services, music, and desecration of synagogues, mosques, or temples” (Commission for Racial Equality 1999, quoted in Kazarian 1998, 204). “In the winter of 1992, alone …

A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used to detect early stages of Myxobolus cerebralis in caudal and adipose fin samples from rainbow trout (RT). To determine sensitivity, groups of 10 RT were exposed to 2,000 M. cerebralis triactinomyxons/fish for 1 hour at 15 degrees C and subsequently moved to clean recirculating water. Fish were held for 2 and 6 hours and 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 30, and 60 days before sampling by nonlethal fin biopsy. Nested PCR performed on fin clips showed that M. cerebralis DNA was detected in caudal fin tissue in 100% of fish …

Despite focused efforts to improve therapy, 5-yr survival rates for persons with advanced-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) remain discouragingly low. Clearly, early detection combined with strategies for local intervention, such as chemoprevention prior to SCC development, could dramatically improve clinical outcomes. Previously conducted oral cavity human chemoprevention trials, however, have provided mixed results. Although some therapies showed efficacy, they were often accompanied by either significant toxicities or circulating antiadenoviral antibodies. It is clearly apparent that identification of nontoxic, effective treatments is essential to prevent malignant transformation of oral epithelial dysplasias. This study employed cell lines isolated from human oral …
Silenced Voices: Experiences Of Grief Following Road Traffic Crashes In Western Australia, Lauren Breen
Silenced Voices: Experiences Of Grief Following Road Traffic Crashes In Western Australia, Lauren Breen
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Despite the introduction of road safety measures and media campaigns, crashes are a leading cause of death in Western Australia. While economic costs of crashes are relatively easy to determine, their psychosocial burden remains appreciably under-studied, as are the social, cultural, historical, temporal, and political contexts within which grief experiences are housed. As such, I explored the experience of grief resulting from losing a loved one in a crash in Western Australia and described the influence of contextual factors on those grief experiences.

Reintroduction Ecology Of Mala (Lagorchestes Hirsutus) And Merrnine (Lagostrophus Fasciatus) At Shark Bay, Western Australia, Blair Hardman
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The transfer of threatened animals from one location to another in order to benefit the species is a technique frequently used by animal conservation managers. However, very few of these relocations have experimentally assessed the relative merits and disadvantages of commonly used release techniques. Two species of hare-wallaby, mala (Lagorchestes hirsutus) and merrnine (Lagostrophus fasciatus), were reintroduced in August 2001 onto Peron Peninsula in Western Australia. These threatened species were reintroduced using two release strategies (soft versus hard release), and their subsequent movements and body condition were monitored using radio-telemetry and trapping.
An Investigation Of The Effect Of Exercised Arm, Training Status, And Racial Background On Changes In Markers Of Muscle Damage Following Maximal Eccentric Exercise Of The Elbow Flexors, Michael J. Newton
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Despite the substantial body of research accumulated on exercise-induced muscle damage, there remain several areas that warrant further investigation. Study groups comprised of individuals from differing racial background and /or training status have the potential to influence the intra-group variability in damage markers following eccentric exercise. In addition, if a contralateral arm model is employed, intra- and inter-group variation could be influenced by the formation of groups based on limb dominance and /or the order in which the arms are exercised. Currently there is a dearth of research addressing these factors, however, these types of studies are important as they …
A Reappraisal Of Wesleyan Methodist Mission In The First Half Of The Nineteenth Century, As Viewed Through The Ministry Of The Rev John Smithies (1802-1872), Richard B. Roy
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The dissertation reappraises Wesleyan Methodist (WM) mission in the first half of the nineteenth century on the basis of its mission statement (`to reform the nation, particularly the Church; and to spread scriptural holiness over the land' ) and a primary WM characteristic, religious experience. The mission statement shapes the outline for the first main section of the dissertation (3.0) utilising the three divisions of the statement only in reverse order, specifically, (1) the spread of scriptural holiness, (2) reform of the church and (3) reform of the land (nation). The second main section (4.0) examines religious experience in the …

Evaluating A Parent Training Program: Scale Analysis And The Effects Of Systematic Training For Effective Parenting (Step) On Child And Parent Behavior, Anne E. Damrad
Open Access Dissertations
Two studies examined archival pretest and posttest data collected from 490 parents who participated in a 7-week Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP; Dinkmeyer & McKay, 1976) program in a large, suburban, public school district in Rhode Island between 1994 and 1999. The first study cross-validated the underlying structure of selected subscales from the Behavior Rating Profile, Second Edition (BRP-2; Brown & Hammill, 1990) and STEP Parenting Assessment Technique (SPAT; Dinkmeyer, 1981). Principal components analyses revealed two components (Externalizing Behavior and Internalizing Behavior) with good to very good coefficient alphas on a revised version of the BRP Parent Rating Scale, …
Mobility And Fate Of Contaminants In Estuarine Environments, Mark G. Cantwell
Mobility And Fate Of Contaminants In Estuarine Environments, Mark G. Cantwell
Open Access Dissertations
Many estuaries are degraded to some extent by anthropogenic activities which have released pollutants into waters entering or residing in these ecosystems. When organic chemicals and heavy metals enter the estuarine environment, contaminants rapidly become incorporated into the sediment, due to physical and chemical processes. Their subsequent behavior and mobility is influenced to a great extent by water column conditions and the geochemistry of the receiving sediments. Ultimately, the fate of contaminants in estuaries are decided by their transport and eventual burial. Objectives of this research were to (1) reconstruct the recent contaminant history of heavy metals and organic contaminants …
