Does Falling Smoking Lead To Rising Obesity?, Jonathan Gruber, Michael D. Frakes Jan 2006

Does Falling Smoking Lead To Rising Obesity?, Jonathan Gruber, Michael D. Frakes

Faculty Scholarship

The strong negative correlation over time between smoking rates and obesity have led some to suggest that reduced smoking is increasing weight gain in the U.S.. This conclusion is supported by the findings of Chou et al. (2004), who conclude that higher cigarette prices lead to increased body weight. We investigate this issue and find no evidence that reduced smoking leads to weight gain. Using the cigarette tax rather than the cigarette price and controlling for non-linear time effects, we find a negative effect of cigarette taxes on body weight, implying that reduced smoking leads to lower body weights. Yet …

Utility Of Health Belief Model Constructs In Predicting Dietary Behaviors Among Female University Students: A Pilot Investigation, Vanessa Emily Anderson Jan 2006

Utility Of Health Belief Model Constructs In Predicting Dietary Behaviors Among Female University Students: A Pilot Investigation, Vanessa Emily Anderson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between Health Belief Model constructs as they related to dietary behaviors in a sample of university women 18-to-25 years of age (n=182). A cross-sectional, non-experimental design was utilized. Independent sample t-tests compared the mean of body mass indices (BMI) to dietary risk and race. Odds ratios amassed relationships between race and healthy food choices. Nearly one-third (32.4%) of participants were either overweight or obese. Black females had significantly higher BMI than white females; however, dietary risk from less-than-adequate fruit and vegetable consumption and consumption of high-fat foods were not related to race. Focus group participants …

The "Ambitious Modesty" Of Harry Arthurs' Humane Professionalism, Julian Webb Jan 2006

The "Ambitious Modesty" Of Harry Arthurs' Humane Professionalism, Julian Webb

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article revisits Law and Learning, the 1983 Report of the Consultative Committee on Research and Education in Law, chaired by Harry Arthurs. The Arthurs Report set an ambitious agenda which sought, through the reform of legal education and scholarship, the cultivation of a "humane professionalism." That it met with limited success reflects a number of systemic problems with legal education, and the Report's own failure to address some critical issues, notably legal pedagogy. Nevertheless, the article argues that in the context of today's increasingly complex, pluralistic, and globalized environment, the law schools need humane professionalism more than ever. It …

Legal Pluralism And Human Agency, Jeremy Webber Jan 2006

Legal Pluralism And Human Agency, Jeremy Webber

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Much legal-pluralist scholarship tends to naturalize "the law of the context," treating that law as though it were inherent in social interaction, emerging spontaneously, without conscious human decision. This view overstates the role of agreement in human societies and mischaracterizes the nature of law, including non-state law. All law is concerned with establishing a collective set of norms against a backdrop of normative disagreement, not agreement. It necessarily contains mechanisms for bringing contention to a provisional close, imposing a collective solution. This article presents a theory of legal pluralism that takes human disagreement seriously. The theory retains four themes crucial …

Heat Transfer And Flow Characteristics Inside A Gas Turbine Combustor, Yap-Sheng Goh Jan 2006

Heat Transfer And Flow Characteristics Inside A Gas Turbine Combustor, Yap-Sheng Goh

LSU Master's Theses

Heat transfer and flow characteristics inside a typical can-annulus gas turbine combustor are investigated. This is the first study in a public domain to focus on the convective heat loads to combustor liner due to swirling flow generated by swirler nozzles. The objectives of this study are to physically design an experimental combustor test model, to perform local accurate heat transfer and flow measurements, and to better understand the fundamental thermo-fluid dynamic effects inside a combustor equipped with a swirler nozzle provided by Solar Turbines Inc. The local temperature and heat transfer distribution were determined to locate the heat transfer …

The Effect Of Cold-Acclimation On The Water Relations And Freezing Tolerance Of Hordeum Vulgare L, S Burchett, S Niven, Mp Fuller Jan 2006

The Effect Of Cold-Acclimation On The Water Relations And Freezing Tolerance Of Hordeum Vulgare L, S Burchett, S Niven, Mp Fuller

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

During a 5 degree C and a 5/-1 degree C cold acclimation (CA) regime there was a significant decline in the water potential of winter barley, and a concurrent decline in tissue water content of the 5/-1 degree C CA plants. Results of carbohydrate analysis illustrated a significant (P < 0.001) accumulation of sucrose, fructose and glucose in the 5/-1 degree C CA plants, which was inversely correlated to water potential. Using an infrared imaging radiometer during a convection frost test the water release time (WRT) of 5/-1 degree C CA was demonstrated to be significantly (P < 0.001) longer than that observed in non-cold acclimated plants. This observation is consistent with visual analysis of exotherm curves where the rate of cellular water release to extracellular ice is reduced in the 5/-1 degree C CA plants, compared to the non-cold acclimated plants. These biochemical and physiological changes were correlated to increased plant health following a non-lethal freezing test to -5 degree C, where non-cold acclimated plants produced 2.3 +/- 0.3 tillers and 5 degree C and 5/-1 degree C CA plants produced 2.4 +/- 0.3 and 4.7 +/- 0.7 tillers, respectively. Results from this study imply that cold acclimation leads to changes in the physical state of water that result in a less osmotically responsive cellular environment and subsequently significantly less damage to meristematic tissue.

Durum Wheat Quality I: Some Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Syrian Durum Wheat Genotypes, Gh El-Khayat, A Samaan, Fa Manthey, Mp Fuller, Cs Brennan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Some physical and chemical characteristics of nine Syrian durum wheat genotypes were determined in order to investigate the relationships among individual kernel components and kernel quality. All genotypes were grown on fully irrigated plots in Syria. Test weight, 1000-kernel weight, kernel size distribution, hardness and semolina extraction rates were determined along with the chemical characteristics of the kernel (ash, moisture, protein, wet gluten, starch content and falling number). All tested genotypes had high test weight (83.1–85.9 kg hl−1) and 1000-kernel weight (42.5–55.5 g) indicating high milling yield potential. Additionally, all the wheat genotypes demonstrated high falling numbers (433–597 s). Correlation …

A Case Study Investigation Of The Development And Treatment Of Alter Personalities In Dissociative Identity Disorder, Ian Brown Jan 2006

A Case Study Investigation Of The Development And Treatment Of Alter Personalities In Dissociative Identity Disorder, Ian Brown

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Progress in the study and treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) has been hampered by ideological debate regarding its validity. This is particularly the case when patient's suffering from DID also report ritualistic abuse. Part of the difficulty has been that past studies have not established independent checks to assess whether alters are artefacts introduced by therapeutic bias. This study addressed this issue by using independent judges to test the validity of a patient being treated for DID who claimed ritualistic abuse. The judges were 16 clinicians with an average of 21 years experience in their respective disciplines. The study …

Methods For The Estimation Of Missing Values In Time Series, David S. Fung Jan 2006

Methods For The Estimation Of Missing Values In Time Series, David S. Fung

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Time Series is a sequential set of data measured over time. Examples of time series arise in a variety of areas, ranging from engineering to economics. The analysis of time series data constitutes an important area of statistics. Since, the data are records taken through time, missing observations in time series data are very common. This occurs because an observation may not be made at a particular time owing to faulty equipment, lost records, or a mistake, which cannot be rectified until later. When one or more observations are missing it may be necessary to estimate the model and also …

Atypical Features In Pleomorphic Adenoma--A Clinicopathologic Study And Implications For Management., M. Ethunandan, R. Witton, G. Hoffman, A. Spedding, P. A. Brennan

Peninsula Dental School

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm and infrequently undergoes malignant transformation. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is typically an infiltrative neoplasm with features of cellular pleomorphism, high mitotic activity, peri-neural and vascular invasion. More recently, sub-groups of pleomorphic adenoma have been described exhibiting vascular invasion and features of malignancy without evidence of extra-capsular extension. There is little information in the literature regarding how these different histological variants influence clinical presentation and outcome following primary treatment. Following a review of 100 consecutive pleomorphic adenomas removed from the major salivary glands, 4 cases with atypical histological features were found. Three …

Effects On The Function Of Three Trophic Levels In Marine Plankton Communities Under Stress From The Antifouling Compound Zinc Pyrithione, M. Hjorth, I. Dahllöf, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

This study aimed to investigate functional responses of natural marine planktonic communities to stress from the antifouling compound zinc pyrithione (ZPT). Isotope labelling techniques (14C) were applied to study bacterial incorporation of leucine, photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton and grazing of labelled prey by zooplankton communities for 6 days after exposures to nominal concentrations of 0, 5, 25, 50 nM ZPT in a mesocosm experiment in Isefjord, Denmark.

Significant direct effects were visible on chlorophyll α concentrations, which decreased in all exposed communities, to between 48 and 36% of control concentrations on Day 3, 1 day after the last …

Influence Of Biotransformation On Trophic Transfer Of The Pah, Fluoranthene, Annemette Palmqvist, Lene Juel Rasmussen, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2006

Influence Of Biotransformation On Trophic Transfer Of The Pah, Fluoranthene, Annemette Palmqvist, Lene Juel Rasmussen, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

The persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine sediments may be influenced by benthic invertebrate bioturbation. Through processes such as deposit-feeding and enhancement of microbial metabolic activity PAHs may be remobilized from the sediment compartment, and either transferred to organisms at higher trophic levels or to the overlying water column, both processes inevitably changing the bioavailability of the PAH. Accumulation of contaminants from one level in the food chain to the next depends on feeding rate and assimilation efficiency, two factors that basically vary with food quality and contaminant type. Though it is generally believed that pre-consumptive biotransformation will …

The Effect Of Experimentally-Provided Supportive Messages On Middle-Aged And Old Adults' Performance On Everyday Problems., Kristopher J. Kimbler Jan 2006

The Effect Of Experimentally-Provided Supportive Messages On Middle-Aged And Old Adults' Performance On Everyday Problems., Kristopher J. Kimbler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It has been suggested that instructional supportive messages consisting of positive emotional content or an offer of practical support have been linked to increased cognitive performance in a variety of domains (Denney, Tozier, & Schlotthauer, 1992; Isen, Daubman, & Nowicki, 1987; Kennedy, Mather, & Carstensen, 2004; Sarason, 1981; Sarason & Sarason, 1986; Tardy, 1992). The exposure to instructional supportive messages has also been linked to the amount of anxious and task-irrelevant thoughts (cognitive interference) that individuals report experiencing during a cognitive task (Sarason, 1981; Sarason & Sarason, 1986). Research assessing the effect of instructional input on performing everyday problems has …

Good morning, everybody. I'm as happy as you are to be at this conference again. I think it's my favorite conference. My second favorite is the conference that Peter Senge runs, every November or December, the Soul Conference or the Systems Theory Conference. What's nice about both of these conferences is that they are more than conferences, they've built a community around them and you see old friends and there's a great spirit of community at the conferences, and that makes them both very special. And the theme of servant-leadership brings out the nicest people. I'm going to talk this …

Magis Leadership: Toward An Active Ontology Of The Heart Through Appreciative Inquiry And Servant-Leadership, Karen Norum Jan 2006

Magis Leadership: Toward An Active Ontology Of The Heart Through Appreciative Inquiry And Servant-Leadership, Karen Norum

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

There are many emerging models of leadership. Transactional, transformational, command and control, facilitative, situational, contingency, charismatic, servant, relational, strengths-based, values-based, and principled are but a few of them. Many of these models focus on the person who is the leader: the one who is in charge, whom others follow, who holds a certain position in a hierarchy, or who has some sort of influence. The models tend to outline characteristics, behaviors, and attributes of leaders with the focus on individualistic and positional aspects of leadership (Heifetz, 1994; Schall, Ospina, Godsoe, & Dodge, 2004). While this is useful, the focus on …

Clara Voce—The Greeting Of Heart And Spirit, Marcia Newman Jan 2006

Clara Voce—The Greeting Of Heart And Spirit, Marcia Newman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

We began our lesson by visioning her voice, where the voice was going, where she wanted to place it, where she intended the sound to flow, what she desired to express through the music, and what she wanted to feel after having sung the piece. We warmed up with vocal exercises and then I stopped and asked her, "Why sing? Why take time out of your hectic day at the bank to come here and sing?" "Because the gift of music should be used," she answered. "It gives me joy." Clara voce- clear voice -the greeting of heart and spirit.

Servant-Leadership: Reflection On A 30-Year Partnership Of The Spirit, Ann Mcgee-Cooper, Duane Trammell, Gary Looper

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

This is a story about serendipity, synergy and synchronicity. Thirty years ago, three lives converged as a result of a chance meeting. Their collective calling gave birth to a vision that has transformed three generations of leaders. Robert K. Greenleaf rose to a challenge from his economics professor to find ways to transform the dysfunction within large businesses and organizations by working from the inside. He captured the imagination of many with his seminal essay, The Servant as Leader. In it, he thoughtfully delineated a practical philosophy of leadership that was dramatically different from the traditional model of the "egocentric" …

Maestro: Exploring The Development Of A Servant-Leader, Martha Helland

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I don't know that I can define or articulate my leadership style. I can only think that I always tried to be prepared musically. Beyond that I guess I just tried to get the job done in a way that enables others to do their best and that affirms and supports them as professionals and as wondeiful people. -Henry Charles Smith A large portion of existing servant-leadership literature focuses on defining what it is, describing how it differs from other leadership practices, discussing its merits, verifying its efficacy, and persuading others to embrace and practice its principles across a broad …

Corazon “Cory” Aquino: Global Servant-Leader, Shann Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

November 26, 2004 Manila, the Philippines Ferch: Thank you, President Aquino, for this interview. What happened to make you the leader of the Philippines? Aquino: Well, circumstances prevailed. First my husband was assassinated. And then, of course, we had been living under a dictatorship. And at that time, I was never considering myself as a presidential candidate. But as the opposition, I suppose, looked around and searched for the best possible candidate against a dictator, a number of them were convinced that it had to be somebody the opposite of Marcos-if possible, the complete opposite of Marcos. So I suppose …
