Use Of Indirect Excretory/Secretory Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Es-Elisa) For The Diagnosis Of Natural Fasciola Hepatica Infection In Eosinophilic And Non-Eosinophilic Cattle From Eastern Turkey, Sami̇ Şi̇mşek, Ergün Köroğlu, Armağan Erdem Ütük, Kürşat Altay
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate fasciolosis in a group of eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic cattle in eastern Turkey. All the cattle were examined for antibodies against F. hepatica by modified indirect excretory/secretory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ES-ELISA). Of the 1200 cattle tested, 164 (13.6%) were found to be eosinophilic by absolute eosinophil counts. Out of the 164 eosinophilic cattle, 121 (73.7%) were found to be positive for fasciolosis by indirect ES-ELISA, while the rate was only 35% among the non-eosinophilic group (P < 0.001). Our data indicate that parasitic infections should be considered an important cause of eosinophilia, particularly in fasciolosis, and the indirect ES-ELISA is useful as a screening test to examine anti-F. hepatica antibodies for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in cattle.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
We investigated the effect of ATP-MgCl_2 on myocardial hemodynamics and ultrastructure. In the in vitro study, left ventricular systolic and diastolic pressures and dp/dt values were significantly high in the ATP-MgCl_2 group beginning from 0.5 h of the reperfusion period. In the ATP-MgCl_2 group, at the end of the third hour, systolic and diastolic pressure values were 80.0 ± 6.2 and 75.2 ± 7.2 mmHg, while in the control group they were 18.4 ± 7.7 and 7.5 ± 6.8 mmHg (P < 0.05). In the ultrastructural analysis, myofibrillary damage was observed in both groups, but the mitochondrial pathologic changes were clearer in the control group. The electron microscopic score was 0.40 ± 0.061 in the ATP-MgCl_2 group and 1.2 ± 0.039 in the control group (P < 0.001). The hemodynamic and ultrastructural parameters of the specimens investigated in this study revealed that the usage of ATP-MgCl_2 may be beneficial in coping with ischemia-reperfusion damage. In the near future, with the help of more comprehensive studies, ATP-MgCl_2 is expected to be used routinely because of its potential benefits.

In computer-assisted surgical applications, reconstruction of 3-D morphological peculiarities are required. Herein, we present a geometric modeling of the separate intestinal sections of the canine. The intestine of the dog was considered a tubular shape along a special curve. Seven male Turkish shepherd dogs were used for the modeling study. The length (cm) and diameter (mm) of the intestines were measured with digital calipers and formulated. These models were then compared to their original photographs. It was concluded that the geometric modeling and experimental work were consistent. These kinds of organ modeling techniques will enable medical lecturers to show 3-D …

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
How do we get a new chief justice? Traditionally, the President decides between nominating a newcomer and promoting a sitting associate justice, and places either nominee before the Senate for its advice and consent. But this is not constitutionally required, or at least not evidently so, and there is no better time to confront this fact. This short essay explains that Congress could develop a different mechanism for promoting justices without subjecting them to a second appointment - providing, for example, that the position would rotate among sitting justices based on seniority, or that the justices would elect a chief …

One model isestimated for pregnancy outcomes, the other is estimated for breeding intervals.Statistically significant variables include age of the mare, number of breedings, certainmedications, farm size, last date of breeding for the first model. Statistically significantvariables for the second model include age, status of mare, number of breedings, certainmedication, and farm size. The model has implication to achieve an optimal breedingschedule and associated management decisions

Lithologic And Stratigraphic Compilation Of Near-Surface Sediments For The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Mccracken County, Ky, Joshua L. Sexton
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The Jackson Purchase region of western Kentucky consists of Coastal Plain sediments near the northern margin of the Mississippi Embayment. Within this region is the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), a uranium enrichment facility operated by the US Department of Energy. At PGDP, a Superfund site, soil and groundwater studies have provided subsurface lithologic data from hundreds of monitoring wells and borings. Despite preliminary efforts by various contractors, these data have not been utilized to develop detailed stratigraphic correlations of sedimentary units across the study area. In addition, sedimentary exposures along streams in the vicinity of PGDP have not been …
Design Of Partial Enclosures For Acoustical Applications, Amy Elizabeth Carter
Design Of Partial Enclosures For Acoustical Applications, Amy Elizabeth Carter
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Enclosures are a very common way to reduce noise emissions from machinery. However, enclosures display complex acoustic behavior that is difficult to predict. The research presented in this thesis uses the boundary element method in order to better understand the acoustic behavior of a partial enclosure. Insertion loss was used as the performance measure and the effect of several design factors on the overall insertion loss was documented. Results indicate that the most important factors affecting enclosure performance are the opening size, amount of absorption, and the source-to-opening distance.
Destruction Study Of Toxic Chlorinated Organics Using Bimetallic Nanoparticles And Membrane Reactor: Synthesis, Characterization, And Modeling, Yit-Hong Tee
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Zero-valent metals such as bulk iron and zinc are known to dechlorinate toxicorganic compounds. Enhancement in reaction rates has been achieved through bimetallicnanosized particles such as nickel/iron (Ni/Fe) and palladium/iron (Pd/Fe). Batchdegradation of model compounds, trichlroethylene (TCE) and 2,2'-dichlorobiphenyls(DCB), were conducted using bimetallic Ni/Fe and Pd/Fe nanoparticles. Completedegradation of TCE and DCB is achieved at room temperature. Zero-valent iron, as themajor element, undergoes corrosion to provide hydrogen and electrons for the reductivecatalytic hydrodechlorination reaction. The second dopant metals of nickel and palladium(in nanoscale) act as catalyst for hydrogenation through metal hydride formation thatproduces completely dechlorinated final product. Different compositions of …

The Meaning Of Health Among Midlife Russian-Speaking Women In The United States, Lenore Resick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to explore the meaning of health among midlife Russian-speaking women from the Former Soviet Union. A hermeneutic, phenomenologic, descriptive and interpretive design following the Utrecht School was used. The setting was in an ethnic community in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The sample included 12 Russian-speaking women who also spoke English, ages 40-61, who migrated after 1991 to the United States. Methods included hermeneutic phenomenology, which combined descriptive and interpretive phenomenology, and content analysis of verbatim transcriptions of open-ended individual interviews. Six major themes were identified: health as a highly valued possession; being a stranger/seeking the familiar; grieving and loss/building …
Being Touched By Music: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Approach To Understanding Tranformational Musical Experience, Kurt Kumler
Being Touched By Music: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Approach To Understanding Tranformational Musical Experience, Kurt Kumler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the lived experience of being personally transformed by listening to music. The investigation started with an exploration of the literature that relates to the phenomenon of musical transformation, including natural-scientific research as well as ideas from musicology, ethnomusicology, psychology, literature, and philosophy. This research was designed to access the nuanced and subjective aspects of the phenomenon by attending to the experience as lived by the experiencer. The method was qualitative in nature, based on a phenomenological-hermeneutical methodology. Throughout the research process, the researcher maintained a reflexive stance, attending to assumptions and preconceptions held about the phenomenon. This …
