Biotechnology Education In The State Of Iowa: A Survey Of Teachers And Factors Affecting Inclusion, Jason Allen Lang
Biotechnology Education In The State Of Iowa: A Survey Of Teachers And Factors Affecting Inclusion, Jason Allen Lang
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This research studied biology, agricultural education, and family and consumer science teachers in Iowa regarding the topic of biotechnology in their classrooms. The survey study involved collecting demographic information about respondents, which could then be used to characterize those who teach biotechnology and those who do not. The survey also asked about perceived barriers to teaching biotechnology. As the first large scale sampling of Iowa teachers (1477), the survey attempted to provide a picture of biotechnology education in the state. Demographic data showed an aging teaching population, a teaching load of some teachers, especially those in FCS and Ag Ed, …

Identity Theft: Who's In Your Wallet? A Look At Urban Legends And Consumers' Greatest Risks, Amber Sue Beenken
Identity Theft: Who's In Your Wallet? A Look At Urban Legends And Consumers' Greatest Risks, Amber Sue Beenken
Honors Program Theses
Americans in the 21st century are obsessed with their physical health but may not be concerned enough with their financial health. One of the greatest threats to financial health today is identity theft. While identity theft is not a new phenomenon, it is becoming a greater risk every day. The alarming rate at which identity theft is increasing necessitates a closer look. Understanding consumers' greatest risks is the first step to knowing what to do when identity theft occurs, because its effects, such as loss of money, loss of time, loss of reputation, and loss of self-confidence, can be severe. …
The Earned Income Tax Credit, Taxes, And Food Stamps: Their Effects On Minimum Wage Workers By State, Aaron William Popp
The Earned Income Tax Credit, Taxes, And Food Stamps: Their Effects On Minimum Wage Workers By State, Aaron William Popp
Honors Program Theses
The federal government spends billions of dollars annually on programs to lift low income workers out of poverty, but the money is not necessarily efficiently spent. If the benefits provided by the government provide a work incentive, then to increase the income of a worker by $1 requires more than $1 in government funds. Some programs, however, do provide an incentive for people to work. Given the complexity of the federal bureaucracy, few people have tried to compute the income that minimum wage workers would expect to earn given a set of government benefits that they receive and a number …
Rights Myopia In Child Welfare, Clare Huntington
Rights Myopia In Child Welfare, Clare Huntington
Faculty Scholarship
For decades, legal scholars have debated the proper balance of parents' rights and children's rights in the child welfare system. This Article argues that the debate mistakenly privileges rights. Neither parents' rights nor children's rights serve families well because, as implemented, a solely rights-based model of child welfare does not protect the interests of parents or children. Additionally, even if well-implemented, the model still would not serve parents or children because it obscures the important role of poverty in child abuse and neglect and fosters conflict, rather than collaboration, between the state and families. In lieu of a solely rights-based …

The Social Construction Of Wife Beating In Political Discourse, Gretchen Arnold
The Social Construction Of Wife Beating In Political Discourse, Gretchen Arnold
Iowa Journal of Communication
The issue of wife beating was a common topic of political discourse in 19th century America. After the turn-of-the-century, however, the issue dropped from public view and resurfaced only when contemporary feminists reframed the problem. My paper explains why this issue disappeared from, and then returned to, the political scene. I use contemporary frame analysis to analyze the specific frames to interpret wife beating that appeared in political discourse and tie them to cultural and institutional developments as well as to the work of specific social movements. in particular, I argue that the moral significance each frame gave -or denied- …
Guidance Documents And Regulatory Beneficiaries, Nina A. Mendelson
Guidance Documents And Regulatory Beneficiaries, Nina A. Mendelson
Articles
Federal agencies rely heavily on guidance documents, and their volume is massive. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently catalogued over 2000 and 1600 such documents, respectively, issued between 1996 and 1999. These documents can range from routine matters, such as how employees should maintain correspondence files, to broad policies on program standards, implementation, and enforcement. Documents in the latter category include Education Department policies on Title IX implementation, Environmental Protection Agency policies on hazardous waste cleanup, the Food and Drug Administration's policies on food safety and broadcast advertising of pharmaceuticals, and many more.Although these …

Docking-Based Substrate Recognition By The Catalytic Domain Of A Protein Tyrosine Kinase, C-Terminal Src Kinase (Csk), Sungsoo Lee, Marina K. Ayrapetov, David J. Kemble, Keykavous Parang, Gongqin Sun
Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Protein tyrosine kinases are key enzymes of mammalian signal transduction. Substrate specificity is a fundamental property that determines the specificity and fidelity of signaling by protein tyrosine kinases. However, how protein tyrosine kinases recognize the protein substrates is not well understood. C-terminal Src kinase (Csk) specifically phosphorylates Src family kinases on a C-terminal Tyr residue, which down-regulates their activities. We have previously determined that Csk recognizes Src using a substrate-docking site away from the active site. In the current study, we identified the docking determinants in Src recognized by the Csk substrate-docking site and demonstrated an interaction between the docking …

Sequential Binding Of Cobalt(Ii) To Metallo-Β-Lactamase Ccra, Gopal R. Periyannan, Alison L. Costello, David L. Tierney, Ke-Wu Yang, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
In an effort to probe Co(II) binding to metallo-β-lactamase CcrA, EPR, EXAFS, and 1H NMR studies were conducted on CcrA containing 1 equiv (1-Co(II)-CcrA) and 2 equiv (Co(II)Co(II)-CcrA) of Co(II). The EPR spectra of 1-Co(II)-CcrA and Co(II)Co(II)-CcrA are distinct and indicate 5/6-coordinate Co(II) ions. The EPR spectra also reveal the absence of significant spin-exchange coupling between the Co(II) ions in Co(II)Co(II)-CcrA. EXAFS spectra of 1-Co(II)-CcrA suggest 5/6-coordinate Co(II) with two or more histidine ligands. EXAFS spectra of Co(II)Co(II)-CcrA also indicate 5/6 ligands at a similar average distance to 1-Co(II)-CcrA, including an average of about two histidines per Co(II). 1 …
Effects Of The Use Of Soybean Oil As Cutting Fluid On The Surface Finish For Turning Operations, Carlos Alberto TeráN Yengle
Effects Of The Use Of Soybean Oil As Cutting Fluid On The Surface Finish For Turning Operations, Carlos Alberto TeráN Yengle
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Concerns about the long term supply of petroleum, the instability of its prices, and growing environmental issues have led to a variety of legislative and public support for the use of agricultural commodities in industrial applications. This study is of importance because of environmental and health hazards concerns, and the possibility of reducing operating costs with the elimination of disposal of used cutting oil that the use of biodegradable oil offers to the metal-cutting operations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the use of an experimental soybean-based oil as a cutting fluid on surface finish …

Surrounding Embryos: Biology, Ideology And Politics, Janet L. Dolgin
Surrounding Embryos: Biology, Ideology And Politics, Janet L. Dolgin
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This article considers several parameters of the late twentieth and early twenty-first-century debate in the U.S. about ethics, politics, science, and ideology (popularly referred to as the "culture wars"). The article focuses, in particular, on shifting understandings of the embryo. The article reviews developments in science (especially the advent of stem-cell research and cloning) that have affected understandings of embryo, the history of debate about abortion in the U.S., and the place of discourse about abortion in a more far-reaching social debate about family, personal relationships, and the scope of personhood in the U.S.
New Terms For An Old Debate: Embryos, Dying, And The "Culture Wars", Janet L. Dolgin
New Terms For An Old Debate: Embryos, Dying, And The "Culture Wars", Janet L. Dolgin
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This article considers the story of Terri Schiavo in the context of a broader set of ideological debates in the U.S. Primary among them is the debate about abortion. In the decades since Roe, pro-life advocates have refashioned the rhetoric of the abortion debate. During that period, an underlying concern with the meaning and scope of family relationships was largely displaced in public debate with concern about the ontological status of fetuses and embryos. Pro-life advocates thus talked less often about abortion as a desecration of traditional family life and woman's purpose and more about abortion as the murder of …
What’S Missing From Foster Care Reform? The Need For Comprehensive, Realistic, And Compassionate Removal Standards, Theo Liebmann
What’S Missing From Foster Care Reform? The Need For Comprehensive, Realistic, And Compassionate Removal Standards, Theo Liebmann
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Class action litigations, media commentary, and statistical data have time and again laid bare the tragically poor quality of foster care in this country. In response to the extensive nature of these problems, federal and state commissions have been established to study what ails the foster care system, to issue reports on their findings, and to make recommendations for reform. But a critical component of reform has been missing. In order truly to protect children from the perils of the foster care system, we must examine the out-dated and short-sighted standards nearly every state currently uses to justify initially removing …
When Globalization Hits Home: International Family Law Comes Of Age, Barbara Stark
When Globalization Hits Home: International Family Law Comes Of Age, Barbara Stark
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Not that long ago, international family law (IFL) referred to a series of multilateral conventions basically concerned with conflicts of law questions. It could be studied as part of a course on family law or as part of a course on conflicts of law. But IFL, or family law in which more than one State has an interest, has grown up and become a subject of its own.
This is not merely a curricular development. Rather, it reflects and reinforces two of the most powerful trends of the last fifteen years: globalization and the spread of human rights. Globalization is …
