Neural Responses To Acute Hypoxia And Hyperoxia, Daniel Graham, Jonathan Marsden, Alastair D. Smith, Gary Smerdon, Stephen D. Hall Apr 2026

Neural Responses To Acute Hypoxia And Hyperoxia, Daniel Graham, Jonathan Marsden, Alastair D. Smith, Gary Smerdon, Stephen D. Hall

School of Psychology

The brain's high metabolic demands make it highly sensitive to oxygen level changes, with both hypoxia and hyperoxia affecting cognitive and neural function. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to characterise the effects of acute normobaric hypoxia and hyperoxia on neural function and perceptual thresholds using EEG, visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and critical flicker fusion (CFF) thresholds. In a single-blind, randomised, crossover design, thirty participants inhaled 10.5%, 21%, or 100% oxygen while resting-state EEG, VEPs, and CFF thresholds were recorded. Hypoxia reduced CFF thresholds in an exposure-dependent manner, while hyperoxia produced a smaller, transient reduction. Resting-state …

Investigating Racial Bias And Attribution Error In Grading Student Performance, Tony Reibel, Rachel Roegman Apr 2026

Investigating Racial Bias And Attribution Error In Grading Student Performance, Tony Reibel, Rachel Roegman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Standards-based grading (SBG) is a relatively recent alternative model of grading designed to increase the reliability of grading while reducing the influence of teacher biases that can distort student evaluations. This study investigated whether SBG mitigates race‑related bias and attribution errors through a mixed‑methods 3×2 factorial vignette experiment with in‑service teachers. A total of 219 teachers scored the same student essay using a common SBG rubric and provided a 1-4 proficiency score, a binary evaluation concerning success criteria and written feedback. “Learning profiles”– a description of the student’s current and past abilities – varied by tone (positive, negative, none: name-only) …

Antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms contaminate aquatic habitats. To prevent harmful bacteria isolated from pond and sewage water, this study assessed the green manufacturing of nanoparticles. A bioactive natural extract of Syzygium aromaticum inhibits the growth of bacteria in vitro. This study involved the isolation, purification, and identification of harmful microorganisms from aquatic sources. Traditional methods of identifying bacteria include Gram staining, bacterial cell morphology, colony shape, and biochemical assays, which are verified by 16S rRNA. The agar diffusion method is used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Syzygium aromaticum (cloves) on isolated samples. Cloves were used to biosynthesize …

Jurnal Ilmu Ternak Universitas Padjadjaran

Feed plays a paramount role in supporting growth, metabolism, and production performance. Their high price encourages the utilization of inexpensive and alternative feed ingredients. PKM, one such feed ingredient, is produced by palm oil industries. However, there is still a very limited application because of its high crude fiber content, which needs processing technologies like pelletization with binder addition. Based on this background, this experiment has been conducted to study the effect of various types of natural and commercial binders in 15% PKM-based pellets on performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers. The study was done for five weeks using 150 …

Preferences For Working In Rural Health Facilities Among Trainee Health Workers In South Ethiopia Region Using A Discrete Choice Experiment, Abdela Hilo

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

The shortage of health workers in rural Ethiopia limits access to essential services and contributes to poor health outcomes, yet little evidence exists on which job incentives most effectively attract new graduates to underserved areas. This study aimed to identify the job preferences of graduating health science students and estimate the relative importance and cost-effectiveness of alternative incentive packages. We hypothesized that both financial and non-financial incentives would significantly influence willingness to accept rural postings. A discrete choice experiment was conducted among final-year students at Arba Minch Health Science College in South Ethiopia. Participants evaluated hypothetical rural job postings defined …

Nail Enhancement Microbiome Study, Kendall Bare Apr 2026

Nail Enhancement Microbiome Study, Kendall Bare

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

Policies in healthcare regarding nail enhancements has not been supported by science that has been researched in the past five years. This study examined bacterial colony growth on gel nail enhancements, regular nail polish, and bare natural nails to evaluate which condition harbors the least bacterial microbiota. The hypothesis proposed that gel enhancements would demonstrate the lowest bacterial counts compared to regular polish and unpolished nails. This investigation was conducted in the context of a local healthcare system policy permitting only regular nail polish in clinical settings. Six participants volunteered and underwent nail swabbing in a microbiology laboratory using sterile …

Appalachian Therapies, Emma Marie Wilson

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

It is predicted that by 2050, deaths due to antibiotic resistance will supersede cancer and cardiovascular disease as the number one cause of death in the world. The present research aims to study the polymicrobial interactions of microbial communities in the Appalachian region. Microbial samples were obtained from mountains surrounding East Tennessee State University, isolated and screened against common human opportunistic bacteria. One particular bacterium, S1S4-10, was found to be antagonistic against Bacillus subtilis and created zones-of-inhibition on agar media. Reverse testing found that the B. subtilis did not have a counter inhibition against S1S4-10. Co-cultures found that S2S4-10 could …

One-Year Follow-Up Of A Frontal Sinus Mucocele Presenting With Ptosis, Zachary Shelton Apr 2026

One-Year Follow-Up Of A Frontal Sinus Mucocele Presenting With Ptosis, Zachary Shelton

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

A mucocele is a benign mucus-filled cyst that forms after obstruction of paranasal sinus drainage. Enlargement can erode adjacent bone, producing mass effect symptoms such as congestion, headache, and proptosis. Rarely, orbital extension can lead to ptosis from compression of Cranial Nerve III (the oculomotor nerve). This report presents a one-year clinical and imaging follow-up in a 79-year-old male after surgical management of a frontal sinus mucocele presenting with ptosis. Initial examination demonstrated right-sided eyelid ptosis with mild restriction on right upward gaze. Prior MRI and CT displayed a right frontal sinus mucocele with sinus expansion encroaching on the right …

Association Between Distance From A Children’S Hospital And Time To Access Healthcare In Children Presenting With Rash., Rebekah Lassiter Apr 2026

Association Between Distance From A Children’S Hospital And Time To Access Healthcare In Children Presenting With Rash., Rebekah Lassiter

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

Locations farther from a hospital may be under-resourced due to their geographic isolation and increased spread of resources, communities, physicians, medications, and health care settings. We hypothesize that pediatric patients, with EM- or EM-like rashes, from distant locations, will present with more severe illness, due to the lack of resources and specialists. We performed a retrospective chart review of all Emergency Department or inpatient encounters with an ICD-10 code of L51 between 01/2013 and 10/2022. Our primary outcome was the duration of symptoms. Secondary outcomes included visits with a primary care provider (PCP) prior to seeking hospital care. We used …

Reversible High-Grade Av Block In Cardiogenic Shock: A Case Report, Subin Paul Apr 2026

Reversible High-Grade Av Block In Cardiogenic Shock: A Case Report, Subin Paul

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

High-grade atrioventricular (AV) block is typically managed with permanent pacemaker implantation when not attributable to reversible causes. Current guidelines recommend permanent pacing for acquired second-degree Mobitz type II, high-grade, or third-degree AV block unless due to a reversible or physiologic cause. Inferior wall acute myocardial infarction (MI) is a well-recognized reversible cause of AV block that may resolve after revascularization. However, the reversibility of high-grade AV block in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) but without acute MI is not well described. We present a case of an 81-year-old man with end-stage renal disease and cardiomyopathy who developed high-grade AV …
