Gnrh Agonist And Antagonist: Options For Endometriosis Pain Treatment , Frances R. Batzer
Gnrh Agonist And Antagonist: Options For Endometriosis Pain Treatment , Frances R. Batzer
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers
Basic science research into the mechanism of the development of endometriosis, its persistence and resulting pain has begun to improve our understanding of how various therapeutic options work. While none of the available treatments resolves the underlying disease process, there are a growing number of alternatives. One of the more recent classes of medical options includes the GnRH agonist and antagonists. While at present this class of medical options is the most expensive and involved in implementation, they prove invaluable in terms of offering an aggressive, successful alternative for many patients. Furthermore, they may act directly on endometrial lesions in …

Defining Health And Health-Related Behaviors Following A Near-Death Experience, Suzanne C. Robertson Phd
Dissertations
While broad categories of health and influences on definitions of health have been identified, the process through which adults define and re-define health has not been researched. The purpose of this study was to investigate the process of defining health and appropriate health-related behaviors following a near-death experience (NDE) as an adult and to articulate a grounded theory of decision-making. Five men and 15 women from the United States and United Kingdom were interviewed and the data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The basic social process was I Still Had to Go Through the Process of Understanding. Understanding …

Drinking Game Participation Among College Students: Gender And Ethnic Implications, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie
Drinking Game Participation Among College Students: Gender And Ethnic Implications, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie
Heads Up!
Participation in drinking games by college students has recently sparked research attention. While previous research indicates that women play drinking games at lower frequencies than men, the current study reveals that college women may be playing games at rates similar to college men. In a sample of 105 coed college students, participants completed a 3-month Timeline Followback recording every drinking event and quantity consumed. They then were prompted to identify which drinking events involved drinking games and how much alcohol was consumed during game playing. Both men and women engaged in drinking games at similar rates and consumed more drinks …

Characterization Of Host Cell Death Induced By Chlamydia Trachomatis, Songmin Ying, Silke F. Fischer, Matthew A. Pettengill, Debye Conte, Stefan A. Paschen, David M. Ojcius, Georg Hacker
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
Chlamydia are obligate intracellular bacteria that modulate apoptosis of the host cell. Strikingly, chlamydial infection has been reported both to inhibit and to induce apoptosis. Although the ability to inhibit apoptosis has been corroborated by the identification of cellular targets, confirmation of cell death induction has been complicated by a mixture of apoptotic features and atypical cell death during infection, as well as by differences in the experimental techniques used to measure cell death. Here we use a panel of well-established approaches in the study of apoptosis to define the form of cell death induced by Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Infected …

Dynamic Modeling And Statistical Analysis Of Event Times, Edsel A. Pena
Dynamic Modeling And Statistical Analysis Of Event Times, Edsel A. Pena
Faculty Publications
This review article provides an overview of recent work in the modeling and analysis of recurrent events arising in engineering, reliability, public health, biomedicine and other areas. Recurrent event modeling possesses unique facets making it different and more difficult to handle than single event settings. For instance, the impact of an increasing number of event occurrences needs to be taken into account, the effects of covariates should be considered, potential association among the interevent times within a unit cannot be ignored, and the effects of performed interventions after each event occurrence need to be factored in. A recent general class …
Russian Defense Reform: Current Trends, Irina Isakova Dr.
Russian Defense Reform: Current Trends, Irina Isakova Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the topic of Russian defense policy has not received great attention. The rebuilding of Russian military strength is a high priority of President Vladimir Putin, and one to which he and his subordinates have devoted considerable time and resources. Therefore, inattention to Russian defense policy is unwise and even dangerous because it causes us to overlook potentially major changes not only in Russian policy, but in international affairs more generally. This monograph encompasses virtually all aspects of the reform of the forces, their organizational structure, the financing of the military, reform of the …

Developing Institutional Faculty Communities To Review And Assess Sotl Work, Paul Savory, Amy Nelson Burnett, Amy M. Goodburn
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
This workshop explores theoretical questions and practical strategies for how to develop faculty peer reviewers for SOTL work. After reading a set of faculty case-study files that include varying forms of SOTL work, participants will engage in guided discussion about reviewing and assessing such work and about developing faculty communities equipped to do such work. Presenter(s) also will seek feedback on guidelines that they have developed for external reviewers of SOTL work. Many teaching efforts have focused primarily on engaging faculty to participate in SOTL initiatives, with little attention to creating mechanisms for evaluating and assessing the work resulting from …
Dermatology Is A Specialty; Dermatology Is Not A Subspecialty., Lawrence Parish, Larry E Millikan
Dermatology Is A Specialty; Dermatology Is Not A Subspecialty., Lawrence Parish, Larry E Millikan
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Specialization began in American medicine about the time of the War Between the States. Several factors spurred the direction of practitioners away from being the so-called “complete physicians. Most important were the advances in instrumentation made by the 1860’s, which allowed ophthalmology and otolaryngology to develop into distinct divisions of allopathic medicine; sometimes, they even joined together, viz eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist. Dermatology, too, became one of the early specialties for a myriad of reasons ranging from the obvious – visual inspection - to the mundane, viz. default – syphilis was too ugly and complicated for every physician …

Does How I Feel About It Matter? The Role Of Affect In Cognitive And Behavioral Reactions To An Illness Diagnosis, Darnell Schuettler, Marc T. Kiviniemi
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Individuals often have low rates of compliance with treatment recommendations. We examined the role that experienced affect at the time of illness diagnosis might play in influencing thoughts and feelings relating treatment compliance. Participants were randomly assigned to receive a positive, neutral, or negative affect induction after imagining they were diagnosed with kidney cancer. They then reported on thoughts and feelings about the illness and the treatment regimen. Participants also reported interest in additional information about the illness and behavioral intentions for complying with the treatment regimen. Affect significantly influenced interest in information and behavioral intentions. Both effects were mediated …

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cytokines And Hypoxia. What Is The Link?, Ahmed K. Al-Shukaili, Ali A. Al-Jabri
Saudi Medical Journal
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that affects approximately 1% of the population, in a female to male ratio of 3:1. The disease can occur at any age, but it is most common among those aged 40-70 years. Despite many years of study, the etiology of RA is still undefined. However, with increased understanding of the immune system the pathogenesis of RA has become clearer. A large bulk of data suggests that T lymphocytes and macrophages play a critical role in the initiation and perpetuation of synovial inflammation. Recently, the cytokine profile of T helper cells has …
