Isoprostanes (iPs) are prostaglandin-like molecules derived from autoxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Urinary iP levels have been used as indices of in vivo lipid peroxidation. Thus far, it has only been possible to measure iPs derived from arachidonic acid in urine, because levels of iPs/neuroprostanes (nPs) derived from ω3-PUFAs have been found to be below detection limits of available assays. Because of the interest in ω3-PUFA dietary supplementation, we developed specific methods to measure nPF4α-VI and iPF3α-VI [derived from 4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)] using a combination of chemical synthesis, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), andliquid chromatography tandem …

Target Dna Structure Plays A Critical Role In Rag Transposition, Jennifer E. Posey, Malgorzata J. Pytios, Richard R. Sinden, David B. Roth Nov 2006

Target Dna Structure Plays A Critical Role In Rag Transposition, Jennifer E. Posey, Malgorzata J. Pytios, Richard R. Sinden, David B. Roth

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Antigen receptor gene rearrangements are initiated by the RAG1/2 protein complex, which recognizes specific DNA sequences termed RSS (recombination signal sequences). The RAG recombinase can also catalyze transposition: integration of a DNA segment bounded by RSS into an unrelated DNA target. For reasons that remain poorly understood, such events occur readily in vitro, but are rarely detected in vivo. Previous work showed that non-B DNA structures, particularly hairpins, stimulate transposition. Here we show that the sequence of the four nucleotides at a hairpin tip modulates transposition efficiency over a surprisingly wide (>100-fold) range. Some hairpin targets stimulate extraordinarily efficient …

Why The Bankruptcy Reform Act Left Labor Legacy Costs Alone, Daniel Keating Nov 2006

Why The Bankruptcy Reform Act Left Labor Legacy Costs Alone, Daniel Keating

Missouri Law Review

This paper proceeds in four parts. Part I describes the world of labor legacy costs and how they end up intersecting with bankruptcy. Part II discusses what approaches Congress or the courts have already used to address the labor/bankruptcy intersection. Part III explores what Congress might have considered in the bankruptcy reform bill if it had been motivated to take a serious look at labor legacy costs in bankruptcy. Part IV explains possible theories as to why Congress chose not to reform the labor/bankruptcy intersection and why that decision was frustrating but prudent.

Appellate Review Of Discovery Orders In Federal Court: A Suggested Approach For Handling Privilege Claims, Cassandra Burke Robertson Nov 2006

Appellate Review Of Discovery Orders In Federal Court: A Suggested Approach For Handling Privilege Claims, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Washington Law Review

The federal circuit courts of appeals have generally recognized that a party suffers real hardship when the district court erroneously orders it to disclose privileged information. Review of the disclosure order after final judgment is usually an insufficient remedy; once the information has been disclosed, it can never again be fully confidential. Consequently, the courts have struggled to provide a mechanism by which such orders can be immediately appealed. However, privilege orders presenting novel questions of law or issues of first impression do not clearly fit within the doctrinal requirements of the most common methods of interlocutory review. Appellate courts …

Ahmadi Women Reconciling Faith With Vulnerable Reality Through Education, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh Nov 2006

Ahmadi Women Reconciling Faith With Vulnerable Reality Through Education, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper presents the perceptions, attitudes and views of a group of Ahmadi women in Southern California through the eyes of their local leader. The specific focus is on ways in which Ahmadi women engage in cultural/religious community building within a racially and ethnically hostile environment since 9/11. Of particular concern are ways in which gender norms are reflected in Ahmadi women’s push toward formal and cultural education in their efforts to maintain their faith, culture and sense of community as they interface with the broader U.S. society. Given the current anti-Islamic climate in the U.S., the Ahmadis offer an …

Interaction Between Objective And Subjective Occupational Conditions Affecting Physical Health Of Women Workers, Jinky Leilanie Lu

Journal of International Women's Studies

This is an investigation on the interaction between the subjective and objective occupational conditions in affecting the overall health of women workers in industries that have accommodated information technology. The sample consisted of 23 establishments and 630 women respondents. Results show that the most prevalent issues among workers in the electronics industry included the need to upgrade skills, repetitive and fast paced work, pressure at work, and work that entailed both physically and mentally demanding tasks. It was found that the overall good physical health of the workers was affected by these factors: overtime, mental work, close monitoring, medium industries, …

Women, Words And War: Explaining 9/11 And Justifying U.S. Military Action In Afghanistan And Iraq, Nancy W. Jabbra Nov 2006

Women, Words And War: Explaining 9/11 And Justifying U.S. Military Action In Afghanistan And Iraq, Nancy W. Jabbra

Journal of International Women's Studies

Texts and images in the print media, outdoor advertisements, and on the Internet form the primary source material for this article. The Bush administration and the American media, drawing upon well-worn traditions of representation, contrasted American women and Muslim/Middle Eastern women, American and Middle Eastern male sexuality, and the moral qualities (good versus evil) of American and Middle Eastern people. They used those contrasts to explain 9/11 and legitimize war in Afghanistan and Iraq. 9/11 was simply explained through a contrast between American innocence and Muslim savagery. For Afghanistan, the predominant trope was liberating Afghan women from the Taliban, or …

Demutualization In The Life Insurance Industry: A Study Of Effectiveness, Lal Chugh, Joseph W. Meador Nov 2006

Demutualization In The Life Insurance Industry: A Study Of Effectiveness, Lal Chugh, Joseph W. Meador

Financial Services Forum Publications

The regulatory and competitive environment in the life insurance industry has changed dramatically in recent years. We investigate the effectiveness of demutualization as a strategic response to the challenges posed by these sweeping changes. The study finds that the demutualized firms generally have implemented a successful strategy based on higher growth, greater profitability, cost effectiveness and shifts in product mix. Also, we find that management takes greater risk in the investment portfolio. In addition, demutualization unlocks value lying dormant in the mutuals’ surplus. The paper concludes that the demutualized firms have generated substantial excess returns over the several market indexes, …

A Primer On Eva For Healthcare Providers, James L. Grant Nov 2006

A Primer On Eva For Healthcare Providers, James L. Grant

Financial Services Forum Publications

The concept of economic profit (EVA) has proved successful in the field of corporate finance since its adoption by several U.S. and International companies over the past 25 years. Unlike accounting earnings, EVA is a measure of a company’s true earnings because it fully “accounts” for the costs of all forms of financing, including debt and equity. In the EVA view, a company is not truly profitable unless it earns a return on capital that bests the opportunity cost of capital. That being said, the question that we address here is how to measure the economic profit of providers in …

Constitutional Collectivism And Ex-Offender Residence Exclusion Laws, Wayne A. Logan Nov 2006

Constitutional Collectivism And Ex-Offender Residence Exclusion Laws, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

The U.S. has often been imperiled by the competing interests of individual states, and while past threats have most frequently assumed economic or political form, this article addresses a different threat: state efforts to limit where ex-offenders (those convicted of sex crimes in particular) can live. The laws have thus far withstood constitutional challenge, with courts deferring to the police power of states. This deference, however, ignores the negative externalities created when states jettison their human dross, and defies Justice Cardozo's oft-repeated constitutional tenet that the “the peoples of the several states must sink or swim together.” The article discusses …

Preventive Medicine: A "Cure" For The Healthcare Crisis, Janice L. Clarke, Deborah Meiris Nov 2006

Preventive Medicine: A "Cure" For The Healthcare Crisis, Janice L. Clarke, Deborah Meiris

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Introductory Editorial: Few would dispute the premise that prevention, early detection, and early intervention form the first line of defense on the disease management (DM) continuum. That being the case, our national statistics on preventive health should be raising concerns throughout the industry. The US healthcare delivery system continues to fall woefully short of its prevention targets. On the international scene, the United States lags behind countries with less wealth and less technological savvy. Commentaries abound on the problems, but recently I became aware of an organization with an exciting goal and a novel solution for bringing preventive medicine …

The Role Of Child Emotional Responsiveness And Maternal Negative Emotion Expression In Children’S Coping Strategy Use, Rebecca Goodvin, Gustavo Carlo, Julia C. Torquati

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the additive and interactive effects of children’s trait vicarious emotional responsiveness and maternal negative emotion expression on children’s use of coping strategies. Ninety-five children (mean age = 5.87 years) and their mothers and teachers participated in the study. The mothers reported on their own negative emotion expression and the children’s empathic concern and personal distress tendencies. The mothers and teachers reported on the children’s use of avoidant, support-seeking, and aggressive-venting coping strategies. Empathic concern was positively associated with the children’s use of support seeking and negatively associated with the children’s use of aggressive venting, whereas personal distress …
