Literacy And Recent History Of Diarrhoea Are Predictive Of Plasmodium Falciparum Parasitaemia In Kenyan Adults, Rodney Coldren, Trish Prosser, Fredrick Ogolla, Victor Ofula

Research outputs pre 2011

Background - Malaria is one of the most serious health problems in Kenya. In 2004, the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Army Medical Research Unit – Kenya surveyed adults in Samburu, Malindi, and Busia districts to determine socioeconomic risk factors for infection.

Methods - Sociodemographic, health, and antimalarial data were collected along with blood for malaria testing. A smear was considered negative only if no Plasmodium falciparum parasites were observed in 100 high-powered fields. Univariate analysis was performed with Pearson's Chi-square test and univariate logistic regression. A multivariate logistic regression model was then created which included only variables …

A Comparison Of Heuristics For Scheduling Spatial Clusters To Reduce I/O Cost In Spatial Join Processing, Jitian Xiao Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Heuristics For Scheduling Spatial Clusters To Reduce I/O Cost In Spatial Join Processing, Jitian Xiao

Research outputs pre 2011

In spatial join processing, a common method to minimize the I/O cost is to partition the spatial objects into clusters, and then to schedule the processing of the clusters in the spatial join processing such that the number of times the same objects to be fetched into memory can be minimized. A key issue of this clustering-and-scheduling approach is how to produce a better sequence of clusters to guide the cluster scheduling thus to reduce the total I/O cost of spatial join processing. This paper describes three cluster sequencing heuristics. An extensive comparison among them has been conducted, and simulation …

Reproductive Hormones Modulate Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Anna Barron, Stephanie Fuller, Giuseppe Verdile, Ralph Martins

Research outputs pre 2011

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by gradual cognitive decline, impairments in speech and language, and dysfunction in the sensorimotor systems, culminating in complete reliance on nursing care. Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant mechanisms in the body, has been implicated in AD pathogenesis, as in many other age-associated diseases such as atherosclerosis, Parkinson disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Although the hormones estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and luteinizing hormone are best known for their roles in reproduction, many studies show these hormones have other roles, including neuroprotection. Changes in the levels of these hormones that occur …

Joint Optimization In Capacity Design Of Networks With P-Cycle Using The Fundamental Cycle Set, Hoang Nguyen, Daryoush Habibi, Viet Q Phung, Stefan Lachowicz, Kungmang Lo, Byung Kang

Research outputs pre 2011

We propose a joint optimization model for capacity design of networks with p-cycles. The model is based on a modified definition of network fundamental cycles and the available straddling links. Concepts about visible and hidden straddling links, which are essential components of our model are also introduced. This is the first ILP model for joint optimization of p-cycle network that can be solved without enumerating p-cycle candidates, and has the ability to achieve optimum solutions. In addition, the complexity of our proposed model is much smaller than any conventional models, particularly when applying to a planar network. This model is …

A Hybrid P-Cycle Search Algorithm For Protection In Wdm Mesh Networks, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Alexander Rassau, Quoc Viet Phung, Hoang Nguyen, Byung Kang

Research outputs pre 2011

p-Cycle is a type of shared link protection for survivable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. p-Cycle not only retains ring-like restoration speeds, but also achieves capacity efficiency in mesh networks. However, finding the optimal set of p-cycles to protect all traffic demands within a reasonable response time is difficult. This is particularity true with dense meshes or large networks, because the number of candidates is huge. Generally, p-cycles are determined by using either Integer Linear Programming (ILP) or specifically designed heuristic algorithms. However, both methods need a set of efficient candidate cycles to tradeoff between the computational time and the …

Efficient P-Cycle Design By Heuristic P-Cycle Selection And Refinement For Servivable Wdm Mesh Networks, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Alexander Rassau, Hoang N. Nguyen

Research outputs pre 2011

Using p-Cycles to protect against single span failures in Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks has been widely studied. p-Cycle retains not only the speed of ring-like restoration, but also achieves the capacity efficiency over mesh networks. However, in selecting an optimal set of p-cycles to achieve the minimum spare capacity and fast computational time is an NP-hard problem. To address this issue, we propose a heuristic approach to iteratively select and refine a set of p-cycles, which contains two algorithms: the Heuristic p-Cycle Selection (HPS) algorithm, and the Refine Selected Cycles (RSC) algorithm. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach …

A Segmentation Method For Shared Protection In Wdm Networks, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang Nguyen, Kungmeng Lo Jan 2006

A Segmentation Method For Shared Protection In Wdm Networks, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang Nguyen, Kungmeng Lo

Research outputs pre 2011

Shared link and shared path protections have been recognized as preferred schemes to protect traffic flows against network failures. In recent years, another method referred to as Shared Segment Protection has been studied as an alternative solution for protection. This method is more flexible and efficient in terms of capacity utilization and restoration time. However, to our best knowledge, this method has mostly been studied in dynamic provisioning scenarios in which searching for restoration paths is dynamically performed after a failure has occurred. In this paper, based on the path segmentation idea, we propose a method to generate good candidate …

Developing Recordkeeping: Australians Working Together, Karen Anderson Jan 2006

Developing Recordkeeping: Australians Working Together, Karen Anderson

Research outputs pre 2011

Australia has nine governments, each with their own archives and records legislation. This multiplicity of jurisdictions has the potential for generating divergence and incompatibility of standards. However, the Australian recordkeeping community works together with the result that consistent, complementary standards are not only customised to local legislative requirements and situations, but will in future ensure interoperability and ease of transfer of records wherever necessary. Australian recordkeeping professionals have a sound history of working together. The Implementation Guidelines for the current International standard for records management, /SO15489.2-2001, were adopted and adapted from those in an earlier Australian Standard for records management, …

A Faster Algorithm For Calculating Hypervolume, Lyndon While, Philip Hingston, Luigi Barone, Simon Huband Jan 2006

A Faster Algorithm For Calculating Hypervolume, Lyndon While, Philip Hingston, Luigi Barone, Simon Huband

Research outputs pre 2011

We present an algorithm for calculating hypervolume exactly, the Hypervolume by Slicing Objectives (HSO) algorithm, that is faster than any that has previously been published. HSO processes objectives instead of points, an idea that has been considered before but that has never been properly evaluated in the literature. We show that both previously studied exact hypervolume algorithms are exponential in at least the number of objectives and that although HSO is also exponential in the number of objectives in the worst case, it runs in significantly less time, i.e., two to three orders of magnitude less for randomly generated and …

Fixture-Scheduling For The Australian Football League Using A Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm, Luigi Barone, Lyndon While, Paul Hughes, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

AFL football is a team sport that entertains millions and contributes a huge amount of money to the Australian economy. Scheduling games in the AFL is difficult, as a number of different, often conflicting, factors must be considered. In this paper, we propose the use of a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for determining such a schedule. We detail the technical details needed to apply a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to this problem and report on experiments that show the effectiveness of this approach. Comparison with actual schedules used in the AFL demonstrates that this approach could make a useful contribution.
