The 2006 Analysis Of Information Remaining On Disks Offered For Sale On The Second Hand Market, Andrew Jones, Craig Valli, Iain Sutherland, Paula Thomas

Research outputs pre 2011

All organisations, whether in the public or private sector, use computers for the storage and processing of information relating to their business or services, their employees and their customers. A large proportion of families and individuals in their homes now also use personal computers and, both intentionally and inadvertently, often store on those computers personal information. It is clear that most organisations and individuals continue to be unaware of the information that may be stored on the hard disks that the computers contain, and have not considered what may happen to the information after the disposal of the equipment. In …

Leading Hackers Down The Garden Path, Suen Yek Jan 2006

Leading Hackers Down The Garden Path, Suen Yek

Research outputs pre 2011

Can a hacker be controlled by predetermined deception? Limiting the decision making capabilities of hackers is one technique of network countermeasure that a honeynet enables. By furnishing a honeynet with a realistic range of services but restricted vulnerabilities, a hacker may be forced to direct their attacks to the only available exploits. This research discusses the deployment of a honeynet configured with a deceptive TELNET and TFTP exploit. Four hackers were invited to attack the honeynet and the analysis of their compromise identified if they engaged in a guided pathway to the intended deception. Hand trace analysis was performed on …

Non-Contact Laser Spectroscopy For Plant Discrimination In Terrestrial Crop Spraying, Kaveh Sahba, Sreten Askraba, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs pre 2011

The early development of a novel micro-photonic based sensing architecture for use in selective herbicide spraying systems performing noncontact spectral reflectance measurements of plants and soil in real time has been described. A combination module allows three laser diodes of different wavelengths to sequentially emit identically polarized light beams through a common aperture, along one optical path. Each exiting beam enters an optical structure which generates up to 14 parallel laser beams. A pair of combination modules and optical structures generates 28 beams over a 420mm span which illuminates the plants from above. The intensity of the reflected light from …

Paramedics And Pre-Hospital Management Of Acute Myocardial Infarction: Diagnosis And Reperfusion, Steven Johnston, Richard Brightwell, Melanie Ziman Jan 2006

Paramedics And Pre-Hospital Management Of Acute Myocardial Infarction: Diagnosis And Reperfusion, Steven Johnston, Richard Brightwell, Melanie Ziman

Research outputs pre 2011

In this paper, we discuss and critically analyse pre-hospital management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). It is clear from several large studies that rapid diagnosis and application of thrombolysis reduces morbidity and mortality rates. Strategies that improve time to treatment in the pre-hospital setting are therefore of fundamental importance in the management of this fatal disease. The advantage of 12 lead electrocardiography use by paramedics to diagnose AMI and reduce time to treatment is discussed. Moreover, paramedic application of thrombolysis in the pre-hospital environment is examined. Several studies conducted worldwide support the notion that ambulance services can play a role …

Locating 1-D Bar Codes In Dct-Domain, Alexander Tropf, Douglas Chai

Research outputs pre 2011

Today's digital cameras and camera phones allow users to capture bar codes, which are used to uniquely identify consumer product. In this paper a fast algorithm is proposed that locates a 1-D bar code in the DCT-domain of a bar code image taken by a digital camera. The algorithm uses the DCT-transform properties to distinguish bar code from other texture, morphological operations to smooth the detected bar code area and the features of the extracted area lo detect position and orientation of a bar code in the image

Changes In Demersal Wild Fish Aggregations Beneath A Sea-Cage Fish Farm After The Cessation Of Farming, Fernando Tuya, Pablo Sanchez-Jerez, Tim Dempster, Arturo Boyra, R Haroun

Research outputs pre 2011

Demersal, non-cryptic, wild fish were counted in replicate 100 m2 transects beneath a floating sea-cage fish farm and two nearby sandy locations at Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, eastern Atlantic) four times before and after the cessation of farming. Cessation of farming involved the removal of farmed fish and ceasing of the daily feeding, although farm structures (cages and moorings) remained. A “beyond-BACI” sampling design provided the framework to detect the effect of the cessation of farming, which produced qualitative and quantitative changes in the composition and structure of the fish assemblages beneath the sea-cage fish farm compared with two nearby …

A Review Of Landholder Motivations And Determinants For Participation In Conservation Covenanting Programmes, Thomas Kabii, Pierre Horwitz

Research outputs pre 2011

Conservation covenants (or easements) are flexible but legally enforceable documents attached to a land title restricting the use of that land, providing for the protection of important conservation values, while allowing the landholder to retain possession. Given the attractiveness of covenants to those who seek to expand national and regional nature conservation initiatives, it is important to understand landholder motivations for participation in programmes that covenant for nature conservation. This paper examines the likely influences on landholder decision making when it comes to conservation initiatives. A review of literature highlights key motivations and determinants, such as landholder demographics and the …

Communication On A Health-Related Website Offering Therapeutic Support: Phase 1 Of The Heartnet Website, Leesa N. Bonniface, Lelia Rosalind Green, Maurice G. Swanson

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper investigates the usefulness of a modest-budget website set up to support people recovering from heart-related incidents through a combination of all or some of the following: surgery, drugs, and lifestyle change. Online communities have been shown to offer support for their members. Ideally, the members of this experimental site would eventually constitute an online community. Effective interaction and personal communication indicate that an online community is developing. The opposite is also true: declining and aborted exchanges might indicate a failure to establish community. This paper reports on the first eight weeks of the experimental website HeartNET. As a …

Protecting The Digital Citizen: The Impact Of Digital Personae On Ideas Of Universal Access To Knowledge And Community, Mark Balnaves, Joseph Luca Jan 2006

Protecting The Digital Citizen: The Impact Of Digital Personae On Ideas Of Universal Access To Knowledge And Community, Mark Balnaves, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

Universal service obligations (USOs) are designed to ensure that citizens of a modern state get access to basic services, from telecommunications to postal services. USOs are interventions in the marketplace to ensure that inequalities caused by geography or income or other impediments to access are compensated for. What constitutes access to 'basic' telecommunications, however, is being challenged by new technologies and new understandings about how people use telecommunications and media. In the past the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) was the 'basic' service. However, in this paper the authors argue that internet telecommunications makes 'persona' an important part of definition …

Ethical Incentives For Employers In Adopting Legal Service Plans To Handle Employment Disputes, Michael Z. Green Jan 2006

Ethical Incentives For Employers In Adopting Legal Service Plans To Handle Employment Disputes, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

Given the difficulties for employees in finding a lawyer to handle an employment dispute and with the growth of ADR, this article asserts that employers should adopt legal service plans as an employee benefit. It might seem counterintuitive for employers to provide their employees with a legal service benefit that may be used against them in employment disputes. However, comprehensive dispute resolution systems employ fair mechanisms that allow employees to resolve their disputes as soon as possible. Having sound legal counsel can become a major component of an employer's dispute resolution system because it offers a distinct human resource advantage …

Producing Safety: Evaluating Structuration Theory As A Framework For Exploring The Values In Action Within The Civil Construction Industry In Wa, Susanne Bahn, Llandis Barratt-Pugh Jan 2006

Producing Safety: Evaluating Structuration Theory As A Framework For Exploring The Values In Action Within The Civil Construction Industry In Wa, Susanne Bahn, Llandis Barratt-Pugh

Research outputs pre 2011

In this paper we argue that occupational safety and health (OS&H) in the workplace is a production of values in action. We propose that such relations may best be explored through the structuration lens generated by Giddens (1984). We both use structuration theory to conceptualise the relations that produce safety and evaluate the utility of the theory as a research framework. We provide a detailed discussion of the context of, and rationale for a proposed study. The paper then analyses the components of structuration theory and frames the production of safety within these conceptual relations. The paper argues that the …

Spyware is software which monitors user actions, gathers personal data, and/or displays advertisements to users. While some spyware is installed surreptitiously, a surprising amount is installed on users’ computers with their active participation. In some cases, users agree to accept spyware as part of a software bundle as a cost associated with gaining functionality they desire. In many other cases, however, users are unaware that they installed spyware, or of the consequences of that installation. This lack of awareness occurs even when the functioning of the spyware is explicitly declared in the end user license agreement (EULA). We argue and …
