Using Reflective Journeys To Engage And Empower Leadership Teams, T J. Sullivan
Using Reflective Journeys To Engage And Empower Leadership Teams, T J. Sullivan
EDU-COM International Conference
The Reflective Leader Development Workshop was designed to professionally and personally develop individual leaders in the health care and education industries into working teams. It was used to meld the individual nursing administrators and school heads in the Master of Education (Educational Management) programme at Universiti Brunei Darussalam into small cooperative leadership learning teams that would function after the programme, as workplace support networks. However, the need for renewal of leadership is always present. It readily became obvious that a workshop using reflective journeys could engage and empower leadership teams in the workplace at individual and group levels. So the …

Connected Classroom Climate And Communication Apprehension: Correlations And Implications Of The Basic Course, Robert E. Carlson, Karen Kangas Dwyer, Shereen G. Bingham, Ana M. Cruz, Marshall Prisbell, Dennis A. Fuss
Basic Communication Course Annual
Although scholars have recommended increasing relational variables in the classroom such as familiarity, acquaintance level, and collaboration to help students moderate communication apprehension (CA), few, if any, academic studies have investigated the relationship between CA and a supportive climate among students in the college classroom. Self-report data were collected from 523 undergraduate students from a Midwestern university who participated in a large curriculum assessment program using the Connected Classroom Climate Inventory (CCCI) and the PRCA-24. Results showed significant relationships between student perceptions of connected-classroom climate and CA levels throughout the course.

The First Year Experience (Fye) And The Basic Communication Course: Insights From Theory And Practice, David W. Worley, Debra A. Worley
Basic Communication Course Annual
Institutions of higher learning increasingly focus on the first year experience (FYE), given the twin needs of persistence and retention. In view of this renewed emphasis, this essay provides insights from theory and practice exploring how the basic oral communication course (BOCC) can adapt existing basic course content and pedagogy, as informed by the standards established by the National Communication Association, to more effectively address the FYE. Specifically, this essay summarizes FYE scholarly literature, reviews representative FYE textbooks, and discusses apparent connections between FYE, basic communication content, and the ways in which the BOCC can practically and naturally link to …
Enacting A Pragmatist Educational Metaphysic Through Civic Engagement In The Basic Media Studies Course, Shawn T. Wahl, Chad Edwards
Enacting A Pragmatist Educational Metaphysic Through Civic Engagement In The Basic Media Studies Course, Shawn T. Wahl, Chad Edwards
Basic Communication Course Annual
We argue that in order to help forward John Dewey’s vision of a pragmatist educational metaphysic, civic engagement through service learning in the basic media studies communication course is a possible plan of action. Specifically, we focus on basic media studies communication courses (e.g., introduction to media criticism, media and society, media and culture) and discuss ways to implement civic-oriented service learning activities for the purposes of fostering greater civic engagement. We draw on literature concerning media literacy and service learning that lead to a case study featuring application of Dewey’s philosophy to a media literacy project. This essay is …

Instructors, Students, Managers, And The Basic Organizational Communication Course: Are We All Working Together Or Working Apart?, M. Sean Limon, Philip J. Aust, Lance R. Lippert
Basic Communication Course Annual
Three studies were conducted to determine the extent of overlap between basic organizational communication textbook content (1990-2002), student perceptions of basic organizational communication knowledge and skills important for the workplace, and managerial expectations of communication knowledge and skills for graduates. Overall, findings indicate overlap on assigning importance to group/team communication, leadership, verbal communication, and conflict management; however, there were differences on a range of topics addressed in the basic organizational communication course deemed essential for job success. Implications of the studies’ findings indicate that organizational communication textbooks could emphasize more “soft skills” such as interpersonal relationships, listening, dealing with conflict, …
The Use Of Professional Seminars To Prepare Future Faculty For Teaching Basic Communication Courses, Lynn M. Harter, Elizabeth Graham, Stephanie Norander, Daniel E. Rossi-Keen
The Use Of Professional Seminars To Prepare Future Faculty For Teaching Basic Communication Courses, Lynn M. Harter, Elizabeth Graham, Stephanie Norander, Daniel E. Rossi-Keen
Basic Communication Course Annual
We focus in this essay on three substantive accomplishments of professional seminars that merit attention because of their ramifications for how we teach and learn in basic communication courses: (1) accomplishing teaching, research, and service as inter-related scholarly acts, (2) interlacing stories of our discipline with stories of learners’ lives, and (3) providing institutionalized support for teaching and learning. Additionally, we offer example reading lists and assignment sheets (see Appendices A, B, and C) in hopes that such resources might prove useful for other graduate programs committed to holistic preparation for students entering the academy.

The Antiviral Action Of Common Household Disinfectants And Antiseptics Against Murine Hepatitis Virus, Christine Bernadette Dellanno
The Antiviral Action Of Common Household Disinfectants And Antiseptics Against Murine Hepatitis Virus, Christine Bernadette Dellanno
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) infected over 8,000 people and killed 784 leaving many questions concerning the effectiveness of common household disinfectants and antiseptics at preventing viral transmission. In order to determine how well standard disinfectants and detergents were at eliminating viral particles from surfaces, the antiviral action of triclosan, pine oil, bleach, chloroxylenol and quaternary ammonium compound/ethanol based products were assayed against Murine Hepatitis Virus (MHV), a virus genetically similar to SARS. Using the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for the virucidal assay, it was determined that alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium saccharinate in 79% ethanol …

Fugitive Slaves And Ship-Jumping Sailors: The Enforcement And Survival Of Coerced Labor, Jonathan M. Gutoff
Fugitive Slaves And Ship-Jumping Sailors: The Enforcement And Survival Of Coerced Labor, Jonathan M. Gutoff
Law Faculty Scholarship
This article explores the relationship between the law of maritime labor and the law of slavery. In the eighteenth century, both sailors and slaves were part of a broad regime of unfree labor relations, with slaves, of course, the most oppressed. In the nineteenth century, an era otherwise supposedly devoted to the ideal of "free" labor, sailors and slaves instead remained unfree, subject to federal laws providing for the forced return to their toils if they deserted - the Merchant Seaman's Act and the Fugitive Slave Act. Both of those statutes were deemed to be within Congress' authority, despite questionable …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background. The use of methylprednisolone (MP) and other corticosteroids for the treatment of acute liver allograft rejection is associated with severe toxicities in nontarget tissues. Therefore, selective delivery of NIP to the liver may improve its efficacy and alleviate its side effects. We investigated the effects of a novel liver-targeted dextran prodrug of MP (DMP) in an orthotopic rat liver transplantation (OLT) model.
Methods. The model consisted of a high responder rejection strain combination (Dark Agouti donors and Lewis recipients). Liver recipients were intravenously administered saline or a single subtherapeutic dose of MP (5 mg/kg) as the parent …

Critical Analysis Of Coprolite Evidence Of Medicinal Plant Use, Piauí, Brazil, Sérgio Augusto De Miranda Chaves, Karl J. Reinhard
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Human coprolites, dating from 8,500 to 7,000 years BP, were collected from the rock-shelter of Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, in Piauí, Brazil. These dates fall within the “Serra Talhada” cultural traditions I and II of the Tradição Nordeste, a paleohuman culture of northeastern Brazil. Archaeoparasitological analysis of the coprolites revealed whipworm eggs and hookworm eggs. Analysis of Tradição Nordeste skeletons and hair shows a variety of diseases including dental problems, osteoarthritis, and head louse infestation. Palynological analysis of the coprolites revealed 12 genera that were potentially medicinal. The pollen data were critically analyzed to assess the potentiality that the pollen …
Growth Promoting Agents And Season Effects On Blood Metabolite And Body Temperature Measures, Terry L. Mader, Wanda Kreikemeier
Growth Promoting Agents And Season Effects On Blood Metabolite And Body Temperature Measures, Terry L. Mader, Wanda Kreikemeier
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
To assess growth promoting agents efficacy among seasons, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, blood metabolites, and tympanic temperature were measured in summer and winter studies. Within each season, pens of heifers were assigned to one of six growth promotant treatments. Season by growth promotant treatment interactions (P < 0.05) indicated that the combination of estrogen and trenbolone acetate increased triiodothyronine in the winter, whereas trenbolone acetate alone decreased both triiodothyronine and thyroxine in the winter. Maximum tympanic temperature was greater (P < 0.01) in the summer than in the winter, while minimum tympanic temperature was lowered (P < 0.01) in the summer. Changes in blood metabolite levels resulting from the use of growth promotants do not appear to substantially influence seasonal changes in body temperature.

The “VCU/Monroe Park Fall Festival” seeks to create a unifying comprehensive fall festival tradition for both VCU campuses. Our proposal responds to the VCU2020 strategic plan by creating a festival designed to highlight VCU/community partnerships and promote “One VCU”. Theme V of the strategic plan emphasizes “maintain[ing] VCU as a model for university-community partnerships” and “develop[ing] collaborations between businesses, government agencies, [and] communities …”. Individual units across the university will respond to these initiatives in countless ways, but unless we promote our community partnerships in a unified, centrally located, vibrant and celebratory way, much of what we do will remain …

Epa's Mercury Cap And Trade Rule: An Environmental Injustice For Women, Rachel Kalman
Epa's Mercury Cap And Trade Rule: An Environmental Injustice For Women, Rachel Kalman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note critiques the EPA's Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR), arguing that it prioritizes economic interests over public health, particularly harming women of childbearing age and vulnerable populations. The rule's reliance on a cap and trade system, delayed implementation, and flawed risk assessment models underestimate mercury exposure risks, disproportionately affecting subsistence communities and low-income groups. The analysis advocates for stricter emissions standards under the Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) framework and greater consideration of gender-specific health impacts in regulatory decisions.

Challenging Standard Conceptions Of Tradition, Science And Technology In 2006: Why Laws Prohibiting The Sale Of Violent Video Games To Minors Should Be Ultimately Upheld, Ilana Lubin
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that regulating the sale of violent video games to minors is constitutionally justifiable, supported by scientific evidence on adolescent brain development and legal precedents. It critiques the lack of a clear legal standard in court decisions and advocates for a nuanced approach that balances First Amendment rights with public safety concerns.
The Slippery Slope: The Vitality Of Reynolds V. Us After Romer And Lawrence, James Askew
The Slippery Slope: The Vitality Of Reynolds V. Us After Romer And Lawrence, James Askew
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that the legal prohibition of polygamy, upheld by the landmark case Reynolds v. United States, is increasingly vulnerable in light of recent Supreme Court decisions, particularly *Romer v. Evans* and Lawrence v. Texas. These decisions have expanded individual rights and challenged the constitutionality of laws targeting specific groups, suggesting that the legal framework against polygamy may no longer hold. The author posits that just as same-sex marriage is gaining legal recognition, polygamous marriages should also be reconsidered under these evolving legal standards.
Does Title Ix Work After School? California Applies The Three Part Test To Municipal Sports, Aaron J. Hershtal
Does Title Ix Work After School? California Applies The Three Part Test To Municipal Sports, Aaron J. Hershtal
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the extension of Title IX gender equity requirements to municipal sports programs through California's AB 2404, addressing disparities in resource allocation and participation opportunities for girls. It argues that while AB 2404 provides critical protections and opportunities, its implementation faces challenges, including budget constraints and potential unintended consequences for male athletes. The analysis highlights the importance of addressing systemic gender discrimination in sports and the need for policymakers to balance equity with practical considerations.
Cultural, Economic And Legal Factors Underlying Trafficking In Thailand And Their Impact On Women And Girls From Burma, Christa Foster Crawford
Cultural, Economic And Legal Factors Underlying Trafficking In Thailand And Their Impact On Women And Girls From Burma, Christa Foster Crawford
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the complex factors underlying human trafficking in Thailand, particularly focusing on the trafficking of women and girls from Burma. It argues that while Thailand has made efforts to address the issue, the root causes, including cultural attitudes, economic interests, and legal frameworks, remain unaddressed. The analysis highlights the shift in trafficking patterns from Thai women to Burmese migrants due to improved socio-economic conditions for Thai nationals and worsening conditions in Burma. The article emphasizes the need for comprehensive solutions addressing both supply and demand factors, including legal reforms and policy changes.

The Cultural, Political, And Legal Climate Behind The Fight To Stop Trafficking In Women: William J. Clinton's Legacy To Women's Rights, Susan Tiefenbrun
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the Clinton Administration's significant contributions to advancing women's rights, particularly through landmark legislation such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). These efforts, including the appointment of women to high office, reflect a cultural shift toward valuing women's roles and protecting them from exploitation. The TVPA, reauthorized under subsequent administrations, has had a lasting domestic and international impact in combating human trafficking and supporting victims. The article highlights the importance of legislative and judicial approaches in addressing violence against women and promoting gender equality.
The Importance Of Realizing "Other Rights" To Prevent Sex Trafficking, Jonathan Todres
The Importance Of Realizing "Other Rights" To Prevent Sex Trafficking, Jonathan Todres
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that effectively combating sex trafficking requires a broader approach that goes beyond criminalization and victim assistance. It emphasizes the importance of realizing "other rights" under international human rights law, such as the right to be free from gender-based violence, discrimination, and the rights to birth registration, health, and education. Ensuring these rights addresses the systemic issues that make marginalized populations vulnerable to trafficking and fosters sustainable development, which is critical for long-term prevention.

Electronic Data Discovery: Integrating Due Process Into Cyber Forensic Practice, John W. Bagby, John C. Ruhnka
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Most organizations and government agencies regularly become engaged in litigation with suppliers, customers, clients, employees, competitors, shareholders, prosecutors or regulatory agencies that nearly assures the need to organize, retain, find and produce business records and correspondence, emails, accounting records or other data relevant to disputed issues. This article discusses some high visibility cases that constrain how metadata and content is routinely made available to opposing parties in civil litigation, to prosecutors in criminal prosecutions and to agency staff in regulatory enforcement litigation. Public policy, as implemented in the rules of evidence and pretrial discovery, restrict electronic data discovery (EDD) as …
