The change in the membrane potential of Jurkat cells in response to nanosecond pulsed electric fields was studied for pulses with a duration of 60 ns and maximum field strengths of similar to 100 kV/cm (100 V/cell diameter). Membranes of Jurkat cells were stained with a fast voltage-sensitive dye, ANNINE-6, which has a subnanosecond voltage response time. A temporal resolution of 5 ns was achieved by the excitation of this dye with a tunable laser pulse. The laser pulse was synchronized with the applied electric field to record images at times before, during, and after exposure. When exposing the Jurkat …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Duvall, Alison, M.S., Autumn 2006 Environmental Studies Towards Community-Owned Forests: Landowner Perspectives on the Blackfoot Community Conservation Area Chairperson: Dr. Jill Belsky The Blackfoot Community Project is a partnership among the Blackfoot Challenge, a landowner-based watershed organization in the Blackfoot Valley and The Nature Conservancy to purchase and re-sell up to 88,092 acres of mid-elevation Plum Creek Timber Company lands to private and public interests as an alternative to subdivision and fragmentation of the landscape. In line with the project’s goal to maintain the working landscapes of the Blackfoot Valley and rural lifestyle through a “community-driven” process, the partnership has …
Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville
Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study was conducted to explore the social dimensions of wilderness fire management. I set out to answer the question what role does an individual’s attachment to place play in determining the acceptability of management actions directed towards fire? I feel that problems will arise if management agencies attempt to restore natural fire regimes to wilderness areas without accounting for the effects on meanings and values different people attach to landscapes. I used a qualitative method and conducted guided interviews with 27 people from three different groups: (1) fire and wilderness management personnel from the Bitterroot National Forest, (2) residents …

The Role Of Electrospinning In The Emerging Field Of Nanomedicine, S. Y. Chew, Y. Wen, Yuris A. Dzenis, K. W. Leong
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The fact that in vivo the extracellular matrix or substratum with which cells interact often includes topography at the nanoscale underscores the importance of investigating cell-substrate interactions and performing cell culture at the submicron scale. An important and exciting direction of research in nanomedicine would be to gain an understanding and exploit the cellular response to nanostructures. Electrospinning is a simple and versatile technique that can produce a macroporous scaffold comprising randomly oriented or aligned nanofibers. It can also accommodate the incorporation of drug delivery function into the fibrous scaffold. Endowed with both topographical and biochemical signals such electrospun nanofibrous …

Perceptions Of Public Relations Professionals Among Radio, Television And Print Reporters In The State Of Michigan, Lindsay Buhagiar
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This study examines the perceptions of public relations professions among news writers/journalists/reporters holding careers in the media outlets of television, radio and print media. Journalists were interviewed and asked a series of questions regarding their thoughts about the public relations profession, how useful public relations efforts are to their job, past experiences with public relations professionals and the topic of ethics in public relations. By analyzing trends in the interviews, suggestions are made to assist public relations and media relations professionals build more successful relationships with television, radio and print media professionals.

Fungicide Sensitivity Of Sclerotinia Homoeocarpa From Golf Courses In Ohio, Young-Ki Jo, Amy L. Niver, Joseph W. Rimelspach, Michael J. Boehm
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Managing dollar spot, the most common and chronic disease on intensively cultivated turfgrass, relies on the judicious use of fungicides. The heavy use of fungicides has led to the development of isolates of Sclerotinia homoeocarpa insensitive to several classes of fungicides, including benzimidazoles, demethylation-inhibitors, and dicarboximides. In vitro fungicide sensitivity assays using single discriminatory concentrations of thiophanate-methyl, propiconazole, and iprodione were developed in this study for evaluating field efficacy of these fungicides and the prevalence of fungicide insensitivity within S. homoeocarpa isolated from golf courses throughout Ohio. Discriminatory concentrations for these fungicides were determined to be: thiophanate-methyl = 1,000 μg …
A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud
Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach
With this dissertation I developed a new theory and measure of ethical work climate (EWC). Currently, there exists one dominant theory and measure of EWC developed by Victor and Cullen (1988, 1987). Even though researchers have identified problems with this theory, such as inconsistencies with regard to its limited theoretical scope and troubling psychometric properties, it is the most widely utilized framework for conceptualizing and testing EWC. Therefore, I propose to develop an improved theory and measure of EWC, one capable of addressing some of the principle shortcomings of earlier efforts. Building on Rest’s (1986, 1979) “Four-Component” model of individual-level …
