Occipital White Matter Volumes Predict Visual Motor Outcome In Preterm Infants With Retinopathy Of Prematurity (Rop), Renu Chundru
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Although very low birth weight preterm (VLBW) infants with grade 3,4 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are at high risk for unfavorable visual outcomes, the middle school vision motor integration (VMI) skills and cognitive outcome scores of these children remain largely unknown. Data for 323 very VLBW survivors of the Multicenter Randomized Indomethacin IVH Prevention Trial (BW 600 1250 g) were analyzed to test the hypothesis that grades 3, 4 ROP would be an important predictor of cognitive and VMI skills. 3 subgroups were evaluated: ROP negative (N = 163), ROP grades 1,2 (N = 137) and ROP grades 3,4 (N …

The Effect Of Presented Outcome Order On Patients' Decisions Concerning Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Joseph Cousin

Background: As the field of medicine is often described as one that combines science and art, it must be noted that data are only considered influential if understood by the person or persons deciding whether or not to use such data. Thus, psychological principles that govern the use of data play almost as equal a role as the medical development of that data. This study applies the psychologically-derived concepts of framing effects to the field of medicine, in an attempt to determine whether risk order should be considered as a framing effect. Specifically, this study used a randomized double-blinded controlled …
Ethnic Differences Influencing The Impact Of Childhood Type I Diabetes Mellitus In Low Income Families, Sadiqa Adero Ihsan Edmonds-Myles
Ethnic Differences Influencing The Impact Of Childhood Type I Diabetes Mellitus In Low Income Families, Sadiqa Adero Ihsan Edmonds-Myles
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Over the past decade, great strides have been made in the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. Although these advances have increased the proportion of young patients who are able to achieve strict metabolic control, there continues to be a disparity in the HbA1c levels of the African American and Hispanic American youth relative to Caucasian American youth, and in children of lower socioeconomic status (SES) relative to children of higher SES. Few studies have explored the underlying factors associated with this disparity and even fewer have analyzed how people of different ethnic backgrounds within lower socioeconomic groups deal with …
Race/Ethnicity As A Moderator In Child And Adolescent Depression And Anxiety Trials, Natalie Guerrier
Race/Ethnicity As A Moderator In Child And Adolescent Depression And Anxiety Trials, Natalie Guerrier
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The inclusion of racial/ethnic minorities in treatment outcomes trials for children and adolescents with depression and anxiety is essential, particularly given the assumption, required by the NIH, that racial diversity is important to the generalizability of clinical trial outcomes. A search for randomized clinical trials on the treatment of child and adolescent depression and anxiety was conducted using the Medline and Psychinfo databases. These were then reviewed to determine whether race or ethnicity were 1) factored into recruitment strategies; 2) represented in the trial sample; and 3) included in moderator analyses to determine the extent to which they may influence …

A Decade Of Reflection: Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland 1996-2006, Noirin Hayes, Siobhan Bradley
Conference Papers
You are welcome to the first seminar in a CSER series intended to consider aspects of early childhood education and care1 [ECEC] from a policy, research and practice perspective and promote discussion and debate. In this introduction to the seminar I want to outline some of the thinking behind the topic for today and present - with limited elaboration - a personal reflection to add to the discussion and debate. In choosing to reflect on the development and impact of early childhood education and care policy in Ireland it is no surprise that the decade 1996 - 2006 should act …
An Examination Of Conflict Conversation In An Online Community: The Pie Fight At Dailykos.Com, Samantha Isabella Soma
An Examination Of Conflict Conversation In An Online Community: The Pie Fight At Dailykos.Com, Samantha Isabella Soma
Dissertations and Theses
The increasing popularity of the social web and online communities requires the attention of researchers of conflict resolution. Although there are many ways to resolve conflict offline, the ways in which conflict takes place within a native online context have not been much studied. Are any of the tools and strategies that are used to improve communication offline used successfully online, or are some other strategies taking their place? What communication patterns occur within an online community equipped with comment moderation capabilities? This research is a case study and addressed these questions by performing a qualitative analysis of comment conversations …

Fuzzy Neural Network Models For Multispectral Image Analysis, Arun D. Kulkarni, Sara Mccaslin
Fuzzy Neural Network Models For Multispectral Image Analysis, Arun D. Kulkarni, Sara Mccaslin
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Fuzzy neural networks (FNNs) provide a new approach for classification of multispectral data and to extract and optimize classification rules. Neural networks deal with issues on a numeric level, whereas fuzzy logic deals with them on a semantic or linguistic level. FNNs synthesize fuzzy logic and neural networks. Recently, there has been growing interest in the research community not only to understand how FNNs arrive at particular decisions but how to decode information stored in the form of connection strengths in the network. In this paper, we propose fuzzy neural network models for classification of pixels in multispectral images and …

Trends In Usage Of Ct In The Early Detection And Diagnosis Of Adnexal Torsion, Juliana Capatosto
Trends In Usage Of Ct In The Early Detection And Diagnosis Of Adnexal Torsion, Juliana Capatosto
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Ovarian torsion (OT) is frequently considered in the differential diagnosis of women presenting to the ED with pelvic pain, but is a relatively uncommon occurrence. While ultrasound is considered the test of choice for OT, CT may be used as an initial imaging study with undifferentiated pelvic pain. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of CT used in the diagnostic evaluation of women with proven OT. We hypothesized that all CTs of the pelvis in women with proven OT would be abnormal. This was a retrospective chart review from 500 bed urban teaching hospital. Patients were …

Sub-Typing Of Prrsv Isolates By Means Of Measurement Of Cross-Neutralization Reactions, Fernando A. Osorio
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The degree of similitude or closeness between two different isolates or strains of PRRSV is very important for deciding which strains should be used for immunization, by either vaccinating with commercial vaccines or attempting to stabilize a herd with planned wt PRRSV infection. As previously known for certain important viral diseases, such as in Foot and Mouth Disease, the reciprocal (cross-) neutralization titers between two strains may be of utmost importance to establish the degree of similarity or difference between these. There is currently a void of methods that would allow distinguishing or grouping strains of PRRSV in a manner …
