Phenomenological Analysis Of Experimentally Induced Visual Mental Imagery Associated With Shamanic Journeying To The Lower World, Adam J. Rock Jan 2006

Phenomenological Analysis Of Experimentally Induced Visual Mental Imagery Associated With Shamanic Journeying To The Lower World, Adam J. Rock

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This study explored ostensibly shamanic journeying imagery by (a) assessing visual images across induction

techniques (i.e., sonic driving, Ganzfeld, relaxation, and sitting with eyes open); (b) determining combination(

s) of induction technique and instructions most associated with religious imagery; and (c) investigating

the origins of visual imagery. Six participants were randomly assigned to factorial combinations of

a 3 x 4 mixed design (levels of instruction x levels of induction) and were administered the Modified Affect

Bridge to explore the origins of mental imagery reported during the experimental conditions.

Phenomenological analysis yielded comprehensive constituent themes. Harner’s (1990) shamanic journeying,

coupled with …

The United States As A Democratic Ideal? International Lessons In Referendum Democracy, K.K. Duvivier Jan 2006

The United States As A Democratic Ideal? International Lessons In Referendum Democracy, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Reports of how the United States works to spread democracy around the globe bombard the American public almost daily. Ironically, as principles of democratic governance expand worldwide, the United States, once the vanguard for citizen participation in government, has fallen behind. Although the U.S. system of government has evolved - average citizens now vote directly for their national representatives - the United States still stands as one of only three major industrialized countries in the world that has failed to allow its citizens to vote in a national referendum. Referendum democracy varies from representative democracy by allowing the public a …

Tidal Energy In The Bering Sea, M. G. G. Foreman, P. F. Cummins, J. Y. Cherniawsky, Phyllis Stabeno

Journal of Marine Research

Tidal harmonics computed from TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetry are assimilated into a barotropic, finite element model of the Bering Sea whose accuracy is evaluated though comparisons with independent bottom pressure gauges. The model is used to estimate energy fluxes through each of the Aleutian Passes and Bering Strait and to construct an energy budget for the major tidal constituents. The finite element model does not conserve mass locally and this is shown to give rise to an additional term in the energy budget whose contribution is significant for the prior model, but which is reduced substantially with the assimilation technique. Though the …

What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Brian J. Meaney Jan 2006

What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Brian J. Meaney

Graduate Research Papers

Being in a position of leadership is a great responsibility. Administrators are asked to fill many roles within the school culture. They make decisions that affect a large number of people, and each decision comes with its criticism. It is important for an administrator to gain the trust and respect of the staff by not asking them to do things that you would not do. Show the staff that that you want to become the best, and they will follow.

Rare Plants Are Common Where You Find Them, Peter Lesica, Raymond Yurkewycz, Elizabeth E. Crone

University of Montana Herbarium Publications

Broad patterns in distribution and abundance can elucidate processes of evolution. A positive association between local abundance and the size of the geographic range has been demonstrated for closely related species across many taxa. This pattern is usually explained by assuming that species with smaller ranges are ecologically inferior (e.g., poor competitors or dispersers). Many areas of high endemism support local species that have evolved recently. The distribution of these neoendemics may reflect historical processes not accounted for by ecological, equilibrium hypotheses. We asked whether such traditional macroecological hypotheses also applied to the local abundance of seven narrowly endemic species …

Migration Turnover Rates In United States Counties, L. Dwight Israelsen, Ryan D. Israelsen, William J. Israelsen Jan 2006

Migration Turnover Rates In United States Counties, L. Dwight Israelsen, Ryan D. Israelsen, William J. Israelsen

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Studies of migration typically examine migration between countries, or, in the United States, migration between states. Recently, there have been several studies done on the determinants of migration at the county level. The current study introduces a new concept into the migration literature: the migration turnover rate (MTR). The migration turnover rate is similar to an employee turnover rate in that it measures the turnover through in-migration and out-migration of the population of an area during a given period of time. The MTR is measured as the minimum of gross in-migration and gross out-migration over the period, as a percentage …

Publications

Regeneration of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) and water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica L.) in swamps of the deltaic plain of the Mississippi River are of major importance for ecosystem sustainability and forest management in the context of regional hydrological changes. Water tupelo often forms prolific sprouts from cut stumps, and baldcypress is one of few conifers to produce stump sprouts capable of becoming full-grown trees. Previous studies have addressed early survival of baldcypress stump sprouts, but have not addressed the likelihood of sprouts becoming an important component of mature stands. We surveyed stands in southeastern Louisiana that were partially logged …

Mining had an enormous role, only partly measurable, in the history of Utah. Its multidimensional impact continues today. Economically, it made a major long-term contribution to the wealth, employment, and tax base of the state and stimulated a seemingly endless range of secondary businesses and enterprises. It helped shape the state's social history, determining the location, distribution, and composition of many communities and bringing transportation systems and a wide variety of institutions to them. It developed cultural diversity by drawing to Utah miners and families from otherwise underrepresented ethnic and national backgrounds. It ignited strife, particularly between labor and management, …

Access And Resilience: Analyzing The Construction Of Social Resilience To The Threat Of Water Scarcity, Ruth Langridge, Juliet Christian-Smith, Kathleen A. Lohse Jan 2006

Access And Resilience: Analyzing The Construction Of Social Resilience To The Threat Of Water Scarcity, Ruth Langridge, Juliet Christian-Smith, Kathleen A. Lohse

All UNF Research

Resilience is a vital attribute that characterizes a system’s capacity to cope with stress. Researchers have examined the measurement of resilience in ecosystems and in social–ecological systems, and the comparative vulnerability of social groups. Our paper refocuses attention on the processes and relations that create social resilience. Our central proposition is that the creation of social resilience is linked to a community’s ability to access critical resources. We explore this proposition through an analysis of how community resilience to the stress of water scarcity is influenced by historically contingent mechanisms to gain, control, and maintain access to water. Access is …

Spatial Autocorrelation And Pseudoreplication In Fire Ecology, Amanda L. Bataineh, Brian P. Oswald, Mohammad M. Bataineh, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, Daniel Scognamillo Jan 2006

Spatial Autocorrelation And Pseudoreplication In Fire Ecology, Amanda L. Bataineh, Brian P. Oswald, Mohammad M. Bataineh, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, Daniel Scognamillo

Faculty Publications

Fire ecologists face many challenges regarding the statistical analyses of their studies. Hurlbert (1984) brought the problem of pseudoreplication to the scientific community’s attention in the mid 1980’s. Now, there is a new issue in the form of spatial autocorrelation. Spatial autocorrelation, if present, violates the traditional statistical assumption of observational independence. What, if anything, can the fire ecology community do about this new problem? An understanding of spatial autocorrelation, and knowledge of available methods used to reduce the effect of spatial autocorrelation and pseudoreplication will greatly assist fire ecology researchers.

The Study Of Urban Form In Canada, Jason Gilliland, Pierre Gauthier Jan 2006

The Study Of Urban Form In Canada, Jason Gilliland, Pierre Gauthier

Geography & Environment Publications

This paper examines contributions to the study of urban form in Canada by French and English researchers working in a variety of disciplines, especially architecture, planning, geography, and history. Instead of discussing contributions purely along traditional linguistic or disciplinary lines, the authors use a novel classification scheme to identify and categorize significant works according to their particular epistemological perspective, before describing noteworthy contributions of various academic disciplines by key authors and research themes. The most significant contributions to the study of urban form in Canada have come from two largely isolated camps: first, architects/planners, mostly from Québec, who examine form …

Mapping Urban Morphology: A Classification Scheme For Interpreting Contributions To The Study Of Urban Form, Pierre Gauthier, Jason Gilliland Jan 2006

Mapping Urban Morphology: A Classification Scheme For Interpreting Contributions To The Study Of Urban Form, Pierre Gauthier, Jason Gilliland

Geography & Environment Publications

Urban morphology is a thriving field of enquiry involving researchers from a wide diversity of disciplinary, linguistic and cultural backgrounds. While this diversity has helped advance our understanding of the complexity of urban form, confusion and controversy has also arisen over the various theoretical formulations forwarded by researchers from different philosophical and epistemological backgrounds. With the aim of improving intelligibility in the field, this paper proposes a straightforward scheme to identify, classify and interpret, or ‘map’, individual contributions to the study of urban form according to their respective theoretical or epistemological perspectives. Drawing upon epistemological discussions familiar to the readers …

Assessing Public Parks For Children In London, Ontario, Martin Andrew Holmes Jan 2006

Assessing Public Parks For Children In London, Ontario, Martin Andrew Holmes

Digitized Theses

Parks are an important feature of the local built environment. It is suggested that whether (or not) high quality public parks are available in the local environment has a significant influence on physical activity levels among youth. This study examines the location and quality of neighbourhood parks (n=208) in a mid-sized Canadian city (London, Ontario) to determine if these public facilities are adequately and equitably distributed throughout the city. A geographic information system was used to map and analyze the spatial distribution of public parks in urban and suburban neighbourhoods of varying socioeconomic characteristics. Neighbourhoods were differentiated using 2001 socio-economic …

A Multi-Scale Analysis Of Northern Goshawk Habitat In Ontario, Peter G. Bush Jan 2006

A Multi-Scale Analysis Of Northern Goshawk Habitat In Ontario, Peter G. Bush

Digitized Theses

The northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) has been identified as a potential indicator of sustainable forest management by a number of state and provincial jurisdictions across North America, including Ontario. However, little is known about northern goshawk habitat use in Ontario. This thesis examined northern goshawk habitat using a multi-scale approach. Within the study, goshawk habitat was examined from the nest-tree scale through to the multiple home ranges, and even at the provincial scale. Examination of the micro-scale nesting habitat use revealed that goshawks in central Ontario preferred to nest in a hardwood tree (specifically aspen), and more importantly in trees …

An Examination Of The Invasion Pattern And Site Preferences Of The Invasive Shrub European Buckthorn (Rhamnus Cathartica L.) In London, Ontario, Lorie A. Wagner Jan 2006

An Examination Of The Invasion Pattern And Site Preferences Of The Invasive Shrub European Buckthorn (Rhamnus Cathartica L.) In London, Ontario, Lorie A. Wagner

Digitized Theses

European buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L.) is an invasive shrub that was introduced to North America as an ornamental and medicinal plant. European buckthorn is dispersed by birds and flowing water, harbours serious plant pests and diseases, and forms dense stands that compete with native vegetation through an extended leaf-out season. European buckthorn is difficult to remove once established because of long-lived seeds and an ability to resprout after mechanically removal. The purpose of this thesis is to examine European buckthorn’s invasion pattern and site preferences in London, Ontario. Sampling and historical data supported the hypothesis that Medway Creek was closer …
