An Evaluation Of Landsat Tm Data And Gis Modelling To Identify Significant Woodlands In Southern Ontario, William Joseph Deyoung Jan 2006

An Evaluation Of Landsat Tm Data And Gis Modelling To Identify Significant Woodlands In Southern Ontario, William Joseph Deyoung

Digitized Theses

The rapid and reliable identification of woodlands that should be protected from incompatible development is an urgent need in municipal planning to secure a viable natural heritage system. The objective of this research was to test the use of LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (TM) spectral data as a current, unified, and scalable thematic layer to identify ecologically significant woodlands in southwestern Ontario. LANDSAT TM data were classified to obtain a Treed Cover data layer for input into a geographic information system (GIS) model that integrated conventional mapping layers (topography, hydrology, soils, vegetation types); patch metrics (size, shape); and landscape connectivity (proximity, …

Changing Nature Of Topographie Control On Surface Soil Moisture Of Prairie Pothole Complexes Along A Climate Gradient, Stephen Anthony Carlyle Jan 2006

Changing Nature Of Topographie Control On Surface Soil Moisture Of Prairie Pothole Complexes Along A Climate Gradient, Stephen Anthony Carlyle

Digitized Theses

Soil moisture of prairie potholes in Saskatchewan showed substantial natural variation in both space and time during the growing season of 2005. The purpose of this thesis was to discover if topography was important in the determining the distribution of soil moisture in these prairie potholes. Prairie potholes were divided into landform elements of similar geomorphic attributes, including shoulders, backslopes, footslopes and toeslopes. Soil moisture changes within and among landform elements were studied to determine if landform elements were related to soil moisture of the surface (0 — 5 cm) of soils. The nature of this relationship was studied under …

Knowledge Boundary Spanning In Virtual Teams, Yulin Fang Jan 2006

Knowledge Boundary Spanning In Virtual Teams, Yulin Fang

Digitized Theses

Virtual teams of dispersed workers have become commonplace in today’s organizations. In order to successfully complete their interdependent work objectives within a distributed team structure, team members must rely on information and communication technologies (ICT) to share, integrate, and manage knowledge. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of knowledge management activities may be impeded by complexities in geographic dispersion, organizational difference, and ICT-mediated communication as well as by syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic knowledge boundaries. Although researchers have paid increasing attention to this problem, related studies are still limited. This dissertation addresses the gap by exploring knowledge management challenges facing virtual teams and the …

Data Quality And Linkages: An Application Of Crime Data In The Cγγy Of London, Ontario, Martin Antony Healy Jan 2006

Data Quality And Linkages: An Application Of Crime Data In The Cγγy Of London, Ontario, Martin Antony Healy

Digitized Theses

The aim ofthis thesis is to present analyses ofthe quality of crime related spatial data and the linkages to that data used in research on spatial patterns ofresidential burglaries in London, Ontario. Data of differing quality are often combined for research with little discussion about potential errors in quality, leading to spurious conclusions. The buffer overlay statistics and stochastic methods are employed to establish the quality metrics of positional accuracy, completeness, and miscodings for the data sets. An empirical investigation ofthe data used in mapping residential burglaries is undertaken. A new census dissemination area data set is created to strengthen …

Flood Damages In The Squamish-Liliooet Regional District: A Post-Audit Of The 2003 Event, Brian Robert Cook Jan 2006

Flood Damages In The Squamish-Liliooet Regional District: A Post-Audit Of The 2003 Event, Brian Robert Cook

Digitized Theses

Canadian flood damages are thought to be increasing and this trend is unlikely to reverse. At present, increased pressure to develop, downloading of responsibility to municipal governments and an aging infrastructure has left British Columbia vulnerable to a catastrophic event. A number of authors have called for more research dedicated to understanding flood damages. This work, despite data limitations, examines the 2003 flood in the Squamish- Lillooet Regional District and aims to inform our limited understanding of floods in B.C. The work makes use of numerous data sources in order to explore a recent event, with particular emphasis on who …

Asian Communication Studies: What And Where To Now, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2006

Asian Communication Studies: What And Where To Now, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

A paradigm of Asian communication is emerging due to the efforts of Asian communication scholars over the years, thus, it is a critical moment for Asian communication scholars to move a step forward through the process of self-examination. To achieve this goal, this essay focuses on the discussion of the present and prospect of Asian communication studies from three aspects. First, the essence of Asian communication is stipulated based on previous studies; second, the concepts of yin and yang are employed to explicate the controversial or confrontational views that show the internal and external diversity of Asian communication studies; and …

A Nuclear Rdna Phylogeny Of Smilax (Smilacaceae), Kenneth M. Cameron, Chengxin Fu Jan 2006

A Nuclear Rdna Phylogeny Of Smilax (Smilacaceae), Kenneth M. Cameron, Chengxin Fu

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Smilacaceae are a taxonomically confused, cosmopolitan family of Liliales characterized by climbing habit, reticulate leaf venation, paired petiolar tendrils, unisexual flowers, and superior ovaries. Deviations from this generalized morphology have led to the division of Smilacaceae into at least seven different genera and five sections within the large genus Smilax. In particular, taxa with connate tepals (Heterosmilax), more than six stamens (Pleiosmilax, Oligosmilax), or herbaceous habit (Hemexia) have been variously classified. Using DNA sequences of 96 taxa from the nuclear rDNA ITS gene region, parsimony analyses provide moderate resolution, but generally poor bootstrap support …

The Children Of The Night: Stoker's Dreadful Reading And The Plot Of Dracula, Dick Collins Jan 2006

The Children Of The Night: Stoker's Dreadful Reading And The Plot Of Dracula, Dick Collins

Journal of Dracula Studies

My intention is to suggest that the plot of Dracula was modeled on the plot of The String of Pearls, the Penny Dreadful serial that created Sweeney Todd. I am not suggesting that Stoker deliberately or consciously “stole” the plot and “rewrote it” with “differences”; nor can I prove he had read it, let alone that he had it on the desk as he wrote. Instead I am making the altogether more ordinary claim that Stoker was familiar with the earlier book, and others like it; that the memory of it provided him with a basic framework of plot; and …

The Sparrow Surface Water-Quality Model: Theory, Application And User Documentation, G. E. Schwarz, A. B. Hoos, R. B. Alexander, R. A. Smith

United States Geological Survey: Publications

SPARROW (SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed attributes) is a watershed modeling technique for relating water-quality measurements made at a network of monitoring stations to attributes of the watersheds containing the stations. The core of the model consists of a nonlinear regression equation describing the non-conservative transport of contaminants from point and diffuse sources on land to rivers and through the stream and river network. The model predicts contaminant flux, concentration, and yield in streams and has been used to evaluate alternative hypotheses about the important contaminant sources and watershed properties that control transport over large spatial scales.

Tribal Self-Determination At The Crossroads, Kevin Washburn Jan 2006

Tribal Self-Determination At The Crossroads, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

The tribal self-determination initiative that began transforming federal Indian policy thirty years ago has reached a crossroads. Despite its transformative effects on tribal governments and the widespread belief that self-determination has been a successful federal approach to Indian affairs, no significant new self-determination program has been initiated at the congressional level in several years. This Article looks to the tribal self-determination initiative's past to gain insights about its future. It also briefly surveys existing tribal self-determination programs and concludes that far more work needs to be done to achieve tribal self-determination. Drawing on the author's broader work, it finds one …

The purpose of this chapter is threefold. First, the chapter summarizes what is known about the prevalence of violence and weapons in U.S. schools. Second, the chapter examines theories that bear on school violence and the empirical evidence linked to those theories. Third, the chapter looks at attempts to prevent school violence and, consequently, the suffering school violence causes.

Footprints Across The South: Bartram's Trail Revisited, James Kautz Jan 2006

Footprints Across The South: Bartram's Trail Revisited, James Kautz

KSU Press Legacy Project

Over the past three decades, a tireless group of volunteers, funded by donations and small grants, has laid out the “Bartram Trail.” Drawn on maps, marked by metal signs beside highways and city streets and by blazes on trees, the trail follows the overall pathway of the eighteenth-century naturalist. Francis Harper’s edition of Bartram’s Travels led the way, identifying most of Bartram’s sites and species. More recently, Brad Sanders has given detailed directions to Bartram’s locations and present-day sites along the trail. Charles D. Spornick, Alan R. Cattier, and Robert J. Greene have published a guide for outdoor enthusiasts and …

The Great Middle Class Revolution: Our Long March Toward A Professionalized Society, Melvyn L. Fein Jan 2006

The Great Middle Class Revolution: Our Long March Toward A Professionalized Society, Melvyn L. Fein

KSU Press Legacy Project

Nowadays, liberalism is in crisis. Whereas conservatism suffered a profound meltdown during the Great Depression, today it is liberals who must confront the disconfirmation of many of their cherished beliefs. Sometimes, it seems as if a few are behaving like teenaged rebels, trying to prove that they will not buckle under adult hypocrisies. Yet, despite refusing to conform, they reflexively align themselves with the symbols of their sedition. Festooned with tattoos, body piercings, and spiky green hairdos, they insist they have arrived at these fashions independently. Liberals similarly take positions without acknowledging that these derive from groupthink. Like the journalists …

How Does Increasing Population And Diversity Affect Resident Satisfaction? A Small Community Case Study, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study examines the quality of life in Crete, Nebraska, with the specific purpose of identifying the factors that play the largest role in determining residential satisfaction. The survey asks a number of questions pertaining to different aspects of living in Crete. The survey is adapted from a survey previously used for a similar study in Schuyler, Nebraska. Focus groups are used to identify key issues in Crete and make adjustments to the questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha is used to test the reliability of the topical variables, and index variables are created, which are used in the subsequent analysis. Using residential …

William Jefferson Clinton, "Racism In The United States" (16 October 1995), Jill M. Weber

Communication Studies Faculty Scholarship

In "Racism in the United States," President Bill Clinton acknowledged racial differences and called upon Americans to "clean our house of racism." Maintaining that the discussion of differences was the first step in alleviating racial tension, Clinton made dialogue a centerpiece of his race initiative. Clinton's approach to civil rights and his emphasis on dialogue marked an important step in the ongoing debates over civil rights in America by illustrating a president's role in shaping such debates.

Capital Speculations: Writing And Building Washington, D.C., Sarah Luria Jan 2006

Capital Speculations: Writing And Building Washington, D.C., Sarah Luria

University of New Hampshire Press: Open Access Books

In this lively study, Sarah Luria pursues the vital political connection between architecture and literature in the formation in 1791 of America's grand new capital city. City planners believed that designing Washington, D.C. as a physical model of the Constitution and its balance of powers would help citizens bond with the newly created nation. Although wildly ambitious, this design was made feasible through financial speculation. Dazzled by the plans for an "American Rome," citizens would buy up its empty lots and make the nation's capital their home. Luria demonstrates how political and financial speculation combined to build Washington and, once …
