An Analysis Of Spending Patterns In Dissimilar Revenue School Districts In The State Of Michigan, M. Scott Korpak
An Analysis Of Spending Patterns In Dissimilar Revenue School Districts In The State Of Michigan, M. Scott Korpak
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to compare two districts with somewhat similar demographics but with dissimilar revenues to see whether or not additional funding per child resulted in enhanced learning opportunities for students in the higher funded district. In addition, although not a primary function of this study, student achievement was considered as a possible outcome for students who had enhanced learning opportunities.
Because public school funding is determined by policy makers, three public policy questions were the basis for comparing the two districts. The three questions were as follows: (a) Should a child’s zip code determine the …

No. 16: South African Immigration Law: A Gender Analysis, Belinda Dodson, Jonathan Crush
Southern African Migration Programme
One of the last pieces of apartheid-era legislation to disappear from the South African statute books was the Aliens Control Act of 1991. Although amended in 1995, this Act was finally consigned to history only in March 2003, when the draft regulations implementing the new Immigration Act (no. 13 of 2002) came into effect (Republic of South Africa 2002 and 2003). While there is much in the new Act to be welcomed, and it certainly represents the advent of a more just and pragmatic immigration regime, many of its provisions give considerable cause for concern on gender grounds. The Act …

Southern African Migration Programme
Remittances by migrants are now a focus of attention of governments and development agencies worldwide. Globally, cash remittances by international migrants now exceed $250 billion per annum, easily outweighing the value of development assistance. Over a third of remittances to developing countries originate in other developing countries. International cash remittances are only part of the story. Remittances in the form of goods and commodities are also extremely important, as are internal remittances from urban to rural areas within countries.
Debate rages on the development impacts of remittances and how these can be maximized. Advocates of migration as a positive force …

Patterns Of Floral Structure And Orientation In Japonolirion , Narthecium, And Tofieldia, Margarita V. Remizowa, Dmitry D. Sokoloff, Paula J. Rudall
Patterns Of Floral Structure And Orientation In Japonolirion , Narthecium, And Tofieldia, Margarita V. Remizowa, Dmitry D. Sokoloff, Paula J. Rudall
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Floral evolution requires reassessment in basal monocots, including species formerly assigned to Melanthiaceae, in the light of recent developments in the molecular phylogenetics of monocots. We have investigated flowers of Tofieldia (Tofieldiaceae), Japonolirion (Petrosaviaceae), and Narthecium (Nartheciaceae). We confirm Engler's (1888) hypothesis that orientation of lateral flowers in monocots is dependent on presence and position of additional phyllomes on the pedicel. The type of floral orientation that occurs in Tofieldia is unusual for monocots, since the additional phyllomes are represented by calyculus scales rather than a bracteole, and the outer whorl tepals are initiated alternating with the calyculus scales. In …
The Role Of Phylogenetic Constraints In The Evolution Of Pollination Mechanisms In Iridaceae Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Peter Bernhardt, Peter Goldblatt
The Role Of Phylogenetic Constraints In The Evolution Of Pollination Mechanisms In Iridaceae Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Peter Bernhardt, Peter Goldblatt
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Novel, specialized systems exploiting bibionid flies, oil-collecting bees, wasps, or crepuscular settling moths as pollen vectors are added to the range of recorded pollination mechanisms in sub-Saharan Africa Iridaceae, while knowledge of the pollination of previously understudied genera such as Aristea, Bahiana, Ferraria, Hesperantha, and Tritoniopsis is expanded. The pollination of 357 species of the sub-Saharan African Iridaceae now includes 17 discrete systems. Based on repetitive interlinked suites of floral attractants and rewards we now infer pollination mechanisms for an additional 883 species. Many pollination systems recur in genera containing > 10 species. The ancestral pollination in African Iridaceae, and …

Subtribal Relationships In Tribe Tradescantieae (Commelinaceae)Based On Molecular And Morphological Data, Dylan J. Wade, Timothy M. Evans, Robert B. Faden
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Tribe Tradescantieae (Commelinaceae) consists of seven subtribes and 25 genera. Previous attempts to evaluate phylogenetic relationships within the group using morphology or the chloroplast-encoded rbcL have either been highly homoplasious (morphology) or provided only weak support for subtribal relationships due to insufficient variability (rbcL). In this study, phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequence data from the chloroplast-encoded ndhF and rbcL genes, as well as 47 morphological and anatomical characters, were used to evaluate relationships within and among the subtribes of Tradescantieae. The addition of ndhF resulted in a more highly resolved phylogeny and greater bootstrap …
Missing Links Between Disjunct Populations Of Androcymbium (Colchicaceae) In Africa Using Chloroplast Dna Noncoding Sequences, Alberto Del Hoyo, Joan Pedrola-Monfort
Missing Links Between Disjunct Populations Of Androcymbium (Colchicaceae) In Africa Using Chloroplast Dna Noncoding Sequences, Alberto Del Hoyo, Joan Pedrola-Monfort
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
With the objective of clarifying some aspects of the biogeography, phylogeny, and taxonomy of the genus Androcymbium, we sequenced three chloroplastic DNA noncoding regions (trnL intron, trnL-trnF IGS, and trnY-trnD IGS). These data were analyzed with maximum parsimony and the ancestral areas methods following Bremer. Results show that Androcymbium is not monophyletic and that the origin of its distribution and speciation is situated in western South Africa. Later, it dispersed to North Africa, going first to eastern South Africa. Androcymbium austrocapense and A. roseum allow us to phylogenetically connect the species of …
Gondwanan Vicariance Or Dispersal In The Tropics? The Biogeographic History Of The Tropical Monocot Family Costaceae (Zingiberales), Chelsea D. Specht
Gondwanan Vicariance Or Dispersal In The Tropics? The Biogeographic History Of The Tropical Monocot Family Costaceae (Zingiberales), Chelsea D. Specht
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Costaceae are a pantropical family, distinguished from other families within the order Zingiberales by their spiral phyllotaxy and showy labellum comprised of five fused staminodes. While the majority of Costaceae species are found in the neotropics, the pantropical distribution of the family as a whole could be due to a number of historical biogeographic scenarios, including continental-drift mediated vicariance and long-distance dispersal events. Here, the hypothesis of an ancient Gondwanan distribution followed by vicariance via continental drift as the leading cause of the current pantropical distribution of Costaceae is tested, using molecular dating of cladogenic events combined with phylogeny-based biogeographic …

Sacred Space/Place, Paul Faulstich
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Landscape, space, and place are three concepts that merge together to create the human experience of the environment. Space is the most basic concept of geography; it is the three-dimensional extent in which objects and events occur. Landscapes and places are both contained within space.
Ethnoecology, Paul Faulstich
Ethnoecology, Paul Faulstich
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Ethnoecology – the study of cultural explications of nature – generates insights into the interface between peoples and the more-than-human world. Ecology is the scientific study of the interrelationships between plants, animals, and the environment, and it has developed into the study of interdependent communities of organisms and their environments. But while most ecologists have been trained to seek knowledge solely from scholarly books or nonhuman nature, tremendous environmental information is stored in the minds, cultures, and arts of indigenous peoples.
Geophilia, Paul Faulstich
Geophilia, Paul Faulstich
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Extrapolated from E. O. Wilson's concept of biophilia, geophilia asserts that humans have an organic propensity to find wildlands emotionally compelling. It exists as a human tendency to emotionally connect with natural landscapes.

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Fishers (Martes pennanti) were purportedly extirpated from Montana by 1930 and extant populations are assumed to be descended from translocated fishers. To determine the lineage of fisher populations, we sequenced 2 regions of the mitochondrial DNA genome from 207 tissue samples from British Columbia, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Montana. In northwestern Montana, fishers share haplotypes with samples from the upper Midwest and British Columbia; in west-central Montana, we detected haplotypes found in British Columbia samples, but also detected a control region and cytochrome-b haplotype not found in source populations. Based on the unique haplotypes found in west-central Montana, …

The Cabining Of Rosenberger: Locke V. Davey And The Broad Nondiscrimination Principle That Never Was, Alan M. Trammell
Scholarly Articles
In Rosenberger (1995), the Supreme Court decided that the University of Virginia could not exclude religious organizations from an activities fund that subsidized student organizations. Nine years later, the Court in Locke v. Davey held that Washington could exclude students of devotional theology from a generally available scholarship program; there was, in the Court’s words, “play in the joints” between what the Establishment Clause forbids and what the Free Exercise Clause requires. The cases seemed to contradict one another.
This Note explores whether Rosenberger announced a broad principle of nondiscrimination with respect to religion and whether Davey reneged on that …

Polychronic Leader: What Would Leadership Research Look Like If We Considered Polychronicity?, David Palmer
Polychronic Leader: What Would Leadership Research Look Like If We Considered Polychronicity?, David Palmer
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
This paper proposes that research in the area of leadership would be enriched and enhanced by the explicit consideration of temporal variables, specifically polychronicity. Effective leadership involves engagement with multiple tasks, activities, and constituencies, often simultaneously. As a construct concerned with multiple task engagement and time use preferences, polychronicity is ideally situated to inform future research studies conducted to investigate a variety of extant leadership theories and traditions.
Entrepreneur- Investor Negotiations: Investigating The Power Gap, Karen Page, Robert Sprague
Entrepreneur- Investor Negotiations: Investigating The Power Gap, Karen Page, Robert Sprague
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
Federal Securities Laws are designed to ensure that investors are provided with sufficient information to make an informed investment. These Laws presume that investors are relatively naive and powerless compared to the relatively sophisticated and powerful sellers of securities. In the new venture arena, however, it is often the case that sellers, the entrepreneurs, are relatively naive and powerless compared to the investors, who tend to be expert in venture finance. This paper explores these heretofore unexamined power imbalances and presents attributes of the entrepreneurs and their resources that may affect entrepreneurs' ability to negotiate with venture capitalists.

Making Principles Of Marketing Case Studies Tangible Through Computer-Aided Interactivity, Maggie O'Connor, Tulay Girard
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
A web-based principles of marketing case study module was developed over a two year period between marketing students and faculty and instructional design students, staff, and faculty. The module was tested with five sections of principles of marketing students to find out whether or not students perceive a difference in learning marketing concepts and problem-solving skills when working on a paper case with no interactivity versus a Web-based case study module with computer-aided interactivity. This study further investigated whether students find a web-based case more enjoyable than a paper case and if students are more likely to be interested in …
International Business Education And Practices: Chinese "Sea Turtles" And Economic Development, David Pan, Jon Shapiro
International Business Education And Practices: Chinese "Sea Turtles" And Economic Development, David Pan, Jon Shapiro
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
China's rapid economic growth has created a demand for professionals of international competence. Many Chinese go overseas studying and repatriate for this job market. However, expatriates with little job experience are often unemployed for an extended period unless they lower their expectations in coastal cities where economy is vibrant, while few go to inland regions of lesser developed. Thus, expatriates as "Sea Turtles" become "Sea Weeds." This paper addresses the issues determining this transformation by differential economic development. We discuss the current status of expatriate employability and emergent need in China, and also make policy and strategy suggestions.
2006 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan
2006 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
It was determined by the Devils Lake Basin Joint Water Resource Board (Joint Board) in early 2002, that a need existed to update the 1995 plan, and to re-evaluate its objectives based on more current and enhanced data. That report supercedes the 1995 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan (Water Plan) that was a product of the Devils Lake Basin Conceptual Water Management Plan. When the 2002 plan was completed, it was decided by the Joint Board to update the plan at least every three years. There are three main objectives of the 2006 update of the Water Plan; the …
The Illegality Of Resentencing, Quin M. Sorenson
The Illegality Of Resentencing, Quin M. Sorenson
Duquesne Law Review
The Supreme Court in United States v. Booker held that mandatory application of the United States Sentencing Guidelines is inherently unconstitutional, and, to preserve the federal sentencing structure, it excised several provisions of the United States Code that required district courts to adhere to the Guidelines in sentencing criminal defendants. Yet, the Court did not address one provision of the Code, 18 U.S.C § 3742(g)(2), that still requires district courts to adhere to the Guidelines in resentencing criminal defendants. This article explores this provision and concludes that it renders all resentencing in the federal system illegal, in violation …
